Obama Addresses NAACP Convention - Stands By Message of Personal Responsibility

Barack Obama was warmly received at the 99th annual NAACP convention in Cincinnati, where the candidate paid homage to African American leaders who walked before him, including Julian Bond who introduced the candidate, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and John Lewis. “It is because of them; and all those whose names never made it into the history books – those men and women, young and old, black, brown and white, clear-eyed and straight-backed, who refused to settle for the world as it is; who had the courage to remake the world as it should be – that I stand before you tonight as the Democratic nominee for President of the United States of America,” he said.

But, he observed, “Just electing me does not mean our work is over. We’ve got more work to do.”

Part of that work, he said, will have to be done by individuals. Obama, who was recently crudely chastised by Reverend Jesse Jackson for his tough love message to the African American community, made it clear he will not back down from his beliefs that those in the community have to take on more responsibilities to better their lives and those of their families.

“Now, I know there’s some who’ve been saying I’ve been too tough talking about responsibility. NAACP, I’m here to report, I’m not gonna stop talking about it,” he said to a rousing applause. “Because as much as I’m out there fighting to make sure government’s doing it’s job and the market place is doing it’s job and we’re passing laws to bring more investment and more education and more infrastructure into our communities and putting our young people back to work. No matter how much money we invest in our communities, how many 10-point plans we propose, how many government programs we launch – none of it will make a difference, at least not enough of a difference, if we also at the same time don’t seize more responsibility in our own lives.”

Jackson implied Obama’s comments were condescending, but Obama stood tall before the African American group and continued, “We need societal responsibility and we need individual responsibility. We need politicians doing what they’re supposed to do and CEO’s doing what they’re supposed to do, and we need parents doing what they’re supposed to do….if we’re serious about reclaiming that dream, we have to do more in our own lives, there’s nothing wrong with saying that.” Based on the crowd’s response, they agreed.

Obama concluded his remarks with a promise to return on the NAACP’s 100th anniversary next year. “I will come back to you next year on that anniversary and I will stand before you as the President of the United States of America. And at that moment, you and I will truly know that a new day has come in this country we love. Thank you NAACP. God bless you. God bless the United States of America.”

The issue here is not that the black community will not vote for Obama…he will receive 99.99% of their vote…it is about whether they will have to lose their greivance issues by the contant theme of being on the outside…not having their fair share. McCaain will not get any votes from this group but will do everything he can for the black community but he knows what the score is….he will not get their vote period. Obama represents the black power side of this community…given all of his associations with wright/Farrahkahn….a groups the NAACP has tried to get at a distance for years since it go them nothing but heartache and further under the attention of the FBI and others…and yet look who is speaking to them now….an outsider…someone who has minimal american black blood yet has progressed as far as anyone in the dem party. As much as they see him as a hope they are very wairy for they know not what to expect….and Obama continues to tell the young males that “any fool can have a child”. If anything the Rev Jackson planned event did was to put Obama on notice that not all “traditional” black supporters see him as their savior…even though they will vote in lock-step for him…keeping at a distance. If Obama wins the election the black community will lose their continued desire to claim the gov’t is not listening…but you will see reparations….a topic brought up on several occassions and never denied by any Obama supporter/advisors. And where is Obama going to get all the money he wants to cover this and other people programs….look out middle class!!!!

I stand behind Barack Obama’s message of african american men and women taking personal responsibility for their actions and decisions. It is just, welcomed by many I know, and non-judgemental. For if we keep sweeping the obivious up under the rug when we ever move forward and better ourselves. Rather than scrub our shoulders at him. We should be standing up in an overwhelming number of hand claps behind him.

The CHANGE is coming. This weekend two young ladies and myself went out and registered people to vote. Barack’s campaign has people of all color, ages, and backgrounds registering people to vote here in VA. I didnt’ see one Republican of any color, age, and backgrounds no where registering people to vote. No knocking on doors having meetings in their homes to stategize. We aren’t part of some big organization, we are just every day Americans working together to help other every day Americans. That is the key. That is why he beat Hillary, and that is why the CHANGE IS COMING to the NUAmerica. Attack adds, FOX NEWS, and conservatives wake up and join in with the rest of America. THE CHANGE is for the better. The old way is the reason why we are in the mess we are in. You can’t deny, because Americans are suffering.

He will get the money out of our pockets just like the dems are doing now. It will be those doubled social security checks, the capital gains tax, which does aply to your home when you sell it, your 401k when you cash it in, lotto winnings, inheratances, and anything else that you may gain money on, and the taxes on the non-exsistant businesses that have faile or finished moving else where so they can make a profit. Did you notice that when the elections started all the real problems became worse? Gas went up very quickly, businesses started moving very quickly and nothing is being done in congress? Wonder why?

who knows what obama will have in store for us excpt the possibility of taking the greatest nation on earth and changing it….those are his words.

at what price of gas do you think he’ll flip on the issue of drilling, of course maybe just to get elected and then reverse himself when he gets in the wh.

obviously he doesn’t think $4/gal isn’t enough to bring some common sense to the dems who remain clueless. i think the watermark with obama will be $6.50/gal.

The notion that black people are voting for Obama because he is black is invalid as white people voting for McCain because he is white. Obama is right on thi issues that matter(Iraq and the Economy). That is why black people are voting for him. When Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson ran for president, They did not have an agenda that would benefit ALL Americans.

Comment by Malika Cincinnati

Is America ready for change?
Not the change of America’s political agenda
But the visual images that America has of our president. White American Male.
It seems to me that we are ready for the political change but the change of face is something some of America is not ready for. I am speaking to the voters whom based their decision to reject Obama solely on the color of his skin, would you rather spend four more years under the BUSH legacy. Can we risk loosing more lives to the WAR on OIL, jobs, homes, not to mention the American way of life? Understand that if you the voter is not apart of that small % of American’s that benefit from the BUSH legacy then really who are you fooling? The BUSH legacy is for the richer and the richest. Not rich, not middle class and definitely not poverty stricken voters.
So again I ask voters, what change are you really against? COLOR or POLICY?

The person who wondered why only the males are singled out is right….if the females were thinking the same issue…”any fool can have a child” remember it takes two to tango…..women MUST take as much responsibility for it is them who give birth and then care for these children which either couple had not the smarts to us birth control if they truely did not want a child. Why single females desire to have no protection or allow their partner to father a child when they knew all along they would be single parents is a huge issue and the grandparents seem to be pushing this notion to have children with or without the father…not a good scene all the way around. So, it is a cultural issue…not just the GUY…more than one party is at fault here and this has to be addressed by responsibility for all adults…not just the guy. Picking at the male only is one element of a complex triangle.

Robert Coleman you need to get off the Kool-aid. You want change?? It does not matter what kind of change?
How about taxes going up (if you have a job). If you do not work - yea I would vote for Obama myself - cause he is going to put in place a governement that provides for all.
For Obama the governement is the main provider, then the business and the faith organisation and then lastly he mentions the personal resonsibilty.
Let’s continue the ‘change’ list you will see under Obama:
How about no gas, long lines when there is gas and how about $8 a gallon? Brother Obama does not want to drill - he wants only some kind of aternative ‘environmental’ friendly energy. My car and my house require gas. I cannot keep my house warm in the winter without oil. What is this ‘alterantive’ fuel he is talking about? We do not know, he does not know. It will take 15 years for us to develop someting reliable. Using Corn for fuel proved to be a very dumb idea because look at the food prices. So before you go ga-ga over the promised change is a good isea to think - without the kool-aid if possible.

Comment by TheXception

Any downtrodden, uneducated, exploited, and forwhateverreason, impoverished American can listen to Obama’s message and apply it to themselves, not just Black men.

He said:

“Because as much as I’m out there fighting to make sure government’s doing it’s job and the market place is doing it’s job and we’re passing laws to bring more investment and more education and more infrastructure into our communities and putting our young people back to work. No matter how much money we invest in our communities, how many 10-point plans we propose, how many government programs we launch – none of it will make a difference, at least not enough of a difference, if we also at the same time don’t seize more responsibility in our own lives.”

Therefore, you must be smart enough to take advantage of opportunities presented. And if you’re not PREPARED to take advantage of an opportunity, it will still pass you by. In other words, stay clean, work hard, maintain values, play by the rules, get trained, get an education, gain some experience, and get in the game!

The world is a tough place for those without means. In the case of those who constantly battle discrimination, just because Obama will be elected President of the United States, it does NOT mean that life will automatically become easier. God does not say that life on earth will be easy.

Obama, himself, is facing tremendous discrimination. There are some who have openly stated in the media that they WILL NEVER VOTE FOR A BLACK MAN. Yet, he hasn’t given up. He doesn’t expect nor want anyone else to give up either. No more scapegoating. Find other ways to accomplish your dreams.

Obama says to accept responsiblity for our decisions, yet wants wealth redistribution by raising taxes. Let me assure you liberals who think that because they are not part of the 1 %, better realize their taxes will be raised. The Bush tax cuts lowered the amount Americans have to pay in taxes in all tax brackets, not just the wealthy. Look it up. There is no way you could pay for universal health care by just raising taxes on the highest earning Americans unless you want them to pay somewhere around 75 % in taxes on their income. Then again many liberals would love to return to a Stalinist type government in our country.

Comment by seeing through the smoke and mirrors

Since BO is so big on taking personal responsibility, does that mean he will take personal responsibility (if he is elected president) for making America poorer? How do people think that he will make America so much better? People complain about taxes now but what will happen with him in control? He will increase taxes and the money that EVERYONE makes not just the rich will be given to the government. If you want your hard earned money going to those who do not try to better themselves then go ahead and vote for BO. I mean socialism is such a great idea that is why so many countries succeed with it…o wait the european countries that use socialism are all electing conservative candidates…o and how about BO wanting to make community service mandatory for all high school and college students? America gives more money to charities then any country that makes community service and charity a chore. so i wonder how much Americans will give out of their own heart if its made mandatory? so it all comes down to who you the people want to happen. Do you want to have the ability to keep the money you make and spend it however you want? or would you rather vote for BO and let the government decide how you spend your money?

Obama only told black fathers what everyone else would like to tell them. He could do this because he is black. Having said that, it is quite apparent that he does “talk down” to everyone…not just blacks. Jessie Jackson was only telling it like it is. Obama is an elitist.

Praise God for Senator Obama! I am in total agreement! We all have a responsibility to our own families. I am disappointed tremendously at Rev. Jackson for his horrible comments. Senator Obama is a strong man and I am praying for him everyday that he continues to stand his ground on this issue. I see the moral decline everyday with our children. It is so sad to see them suffer because of poor home life. I see wonderful parents that also try to help those that are not so fortunate. Keep speaking the truth!

“Seeing through smoke and mirrors”… my only questions is… would you rather for OUR tax money to go to a pointless war or to the benefit of our country? I would rather for you to take my hard earned money and use it as an investment for the betterment of my future than on someone else’s own personal greed. (Ie; Bush, McCain and Republicans that benefit from the war) I’m NOT selfish… and if I have to give a little more to help others to do better then I will with no problem. I understand that everyone isn’t looking for some type of hand out… but, some peoplel who have made bad decisions need help to do better and with BUSH & McCAIN they are just trying to keep all social classes at the levels that they are currently at and that’s not the “American Dream”.

I am a 22 yr old black female, no kids, have my own place, my own car, no gov’t assistance, a junior in college and I work at a Fortune 500 company. If ANYONE is struggling with the HORRIBLE transition in this economy… I am. Spite the ridiculous rise in gas, power, groceries, etc. I choose to believe that if you’re going to take my money and raise my taxes… use it to MY benefit and get this economy back on track. However, I am not complaining, just simply stating that I see the bigger picture. Sometimes you have to take a couple of steps back, make sacrifices and be patient to reap a benefit. I am working HARD to better myself and trying my best to make the right decisions to have a financially stable (among other values) family.

Obama and the NAACP deserve each other. They are both the most obvious racist things to come along in a long time. There is no need to discuss the racist agenda and past of obama and his wife. It has been proven over and over again and no one seems to care. The NAACP is another story. It is the only overtly racist organization in this country that is santioned by the media and the majority of the people in the country. The name itself has to tell the story. To advance one race you have to reduce the power of the rest of the races. This america is racism. No one cares because it would not be politically corect to say anything about the black people. The country is run so we dont offend 12% of the population and the hell with the other 88%.

Obama is all about massive socialist government and taxing America to death. Obama is currently sponsoring US Senate bill S2433 in the US senate. Obama’s S2433 bill will commit America to pay 845 Billion dollars in additional taxes over the next few years and S2433 will consume 0.7 percent of the US gross nation product. The money collected from S2433 is to be given to the United Nations specifically for the “UN Global Poverty Act”. The money will then be distributed to third world dictators (Google Obama’s S2433). Obama has vowed to double the capital gains tax, eliminate the reduction on the death inheritance tax that President Bush implemented. Obama has also signed on to many other taxation schemes. Taxes are already sky high and a heavy burden on Americans. Vote for Obama if you wish for the second coming of Jimmy Carter. Google S2433 and read about how Barack Obama’s plans to redistribute your wealth through the UN. I don’t owe third world dictators a dime, do you? I can’t afford Obama’s change, visit the site and decide if you really want Obama’s change or if you can afford the change that Obama has planned for you.

Never in a million years will this “honest” politician tell a single black mother to keep her family– or her knees– together

This is one of the most ignorant and racist comments I have read in a while. And I have been reading comments on Fox News. How many families are without fathers. How many children have to do without their mothers, due to them having to work 2 or 3 jobs just to put food on the table. “Railroaded by our manhating family courts”. I bet you have children out there that you don’t think you should have to take responsibility for. Tell a single black mother to keep her knees together? Unless I am mistaken sex involves 2 people (unless you are Republican, They just don’t have sex….LOL). He is refering to these men that talk big, talk like they are real men. Then when the woman is pregnant, Woosh out of town. No support.”Ruinous child support” If you don’t think that a MAN should have to pay for what they helped to create (unless you want to support abortion), then you are no MAN to make judgements on a persons resposibility.

I guess I’ve never really understood the NAACP. Why do “colored people” (thought they hated that by the way) need an organization to “advance” them. Yes, I’m a white 45 year old female and I am just curious why “colored people” can’t just work hard, get grants/loans and go to college, get good jobs and “advance” themselves. That’s the way my family has always done it.

Oh, yes - I forgot. They don’t have time to do all those things because they are too busy whining how mistreated they are and about their great, great grand-pappy who was a slave!

Nevermind that middle class white kids have trouble getting grants & loans because 95% of the money is ear-marked for minorities.

I am so scared for this country if Obama gets elected president. I wish people would do their homework and truly research his record before swooning over him. Taxes will increase, health care will be much worse than it is now (while costing us much more) and your hard-earned pay will be redistributed to others. How can that be a good thing? What are you people thinking? All I can say is that if he gets elected, all of you that voted for him deserve what you get. The unfortunate thing is that all of us that abhore what he stands for will also have to deal with him for four years. I guess we lived through four years of Jimmy Carter and eight years of Bill Clinton so we’d live through four years of President Obama.

For those who question the relevance of the NAACP, you should look at the history of the organization. At the time it was founded, it was certainly a much needed asset to African Americans. No reasonable person could question the need for its founding. Unlike the Council for Conservative Citizens, the NAACP helps all people, regardless of color.

I have a question for those who think Blacks are voting purely along racial lines. If Blacks are voting overwhelmingly for Obama because of his perceived race, then what are the reasons that whites are voting for him? For those who need assistance thinking, I’ll assist you. Clearly, whites share no phenotypic similarities to Obama. So, they must be voting for him for some other reasons. Perhaps, whites are voting for Obama because he shares their political views: Principles of the Democratic party. Many Blacks also share the views of the Democratic party. Therefore, Blacks are voting for Obama for the same reason whites are: Principle of the Democratic party.

*Before some of you play the guilty, bleeding-heart, white liberal angle, voting is by secret ballot.

I guess you are one of the blind sheep Oblama is counting on. You counterdict your point about race voting by bringing up the fact that whites are voting for Oblama too. The black vote for him is about mid 90% (sounds like they are voting on skin color to me). Are whites voting mid 90% for McCain? NO! So who are the racists and who are the ones voting on issues?
