Obama Campaign Working to Find “Appropriate” Location for Germany Visit

When rumors swirled that Barack Obama would speak in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Germany, during his European trip next week, it was reported that someone in the Bush Administration approached a German official at the G8 Summit in Japan to question the appropriateness of the location of the Democrat’s remarks.

The German press soon reported that German Chancellor Andrea Merkel deemed the location, one of the last remaining points connecting East and West Germany, off limits for an Obama stop – not because of Bush’s concerns, but as a matter of fairness. If Obama spoke there, then any candidate running for any office, in any country around the world may want to speak there.

Today the candidate told reporters aboard his campaign plane that his campaign has been “trying to coordinate with folks on the ground in terms of finding an appropriate site, but we didn’t have a particular site in mind.”

Obama said getting his message out is more important than the location of the speech. “Our goal is just for me to lay out how I think about the next administration’s role and rebuilding our transatlantic alliance and so I don’t want to the negative to be a distraction. What I want to do is just work with folks on the ground to find some place that’s appropriate,” Obama said.

Earlier this week at a town hall in Virginia, Obama gave a sneak preview of that message. “Although our military power is unmatched, the real challenges, the real threats, that face not just our security but world security today can’t be solved just by one country because they span the globe…We’ve got to worry about and spend time thinking about building alliances and restoring relationships with countries all around the world in order to deal with our national security,” he said, prefacing that he didn’t want to “spill” too much about the top secret trip.

The campaign has not made announcements on the specifics of Obama’s visit to Germany.

When is Obama going to realize it is pure arrogance for him to conduct himself as if he is already the president. Obama’s pompous attitude in reference to speaking in front of the Branenburg gate is another in a long list of examples of his false sense of self importance. Obama is a kindergartener on the world stage of politics and the Germans should be insulted at his actions.

How arrogant of Obama to try to pull the JFK and Reagan act in a foreign country…seems to me that he believes he is president “already”. And even if Obama was president he truely does not have the proven leadership, experience and will to BE PRESIDENT like these two other LEADERS., Both were very strong advocates of keeping America strong for external and internal treats…Obama is neither. But the thing that is most disturbing is that Obama is the “prince” of the far left agenda which has bben holding several European governments hostage until just recent election….they have had their flert with socialism…re-distribution of wealth….and they saw the direct result of such…failing economies….and Obama does not have a clue of the upcoming train wreck such will result in our economy. Our economy is driven by those who want greater wealth…putting their money in stocks and watch it rise…or have the money to but the optional items which allows workers their job. But Obama and the rest of the dems walking in lockstep want to bring this to a close….remember workers when voting be sure your desired candidate approach to the economy is supportive of an economy that does not degrade the economy. The auto unions are going to have a tough time now and in the near future while oil prices stay up and no amount of wealth re-distribution will save them.

Is he campaigning in Germany or the United States, and oh my friends who is paying for this rock star to speak in Germany? He needs to pay for it himself he has all the big bucks and I wonder if some of our german friends donated. He needs to campaign here in the USA, he needs to foot the bill on all these trips he intends to take.
Maybe it wasn’t anyone in the Bush staff. Who else?

TOO BUSY???
Senator Obama has been invited to a townhall meeting near Ft. Hood, Texas and has not accepted.
Why doesn’t he take time to get his message out here, where thousands of brave military families live and in a Country where he is running for President?

Instead, he wants to speak in Germany???

Doesnt this guy scare anyone! OMG his wife is ashamed of being an American. His close associates are terrorists or associated with anarchists and his preacher of 20 somethings years is a racist bent on pulling the country apart. SKEERY

Why not use Zeppelin Field in Nurnberg. I think it is appropos and very fitting for the Democratic Party.

Obama’s purpose for the trip is to offer sympathy and apologies to the Germans because the United States did not surrender to the Nazis in WW II.
This is the kind of apeasement he will offer Iran and other terrorist breeding countries.

Obama said getting his message out “is more important than the location of the speech.” So I guess the Brandenburg Gate was just considered neutral territory. Honestly, this guy will say or do anything to get elected - much in the tradition of the Clintons. How arrogant. Perhaps Jesse Jackson should comment once again in front of the Gate as Obama’s “reverends” are so well versed in doing in support of their candidate in “strategic distancing” from their confidant, as the left would have you believe. Far from improving America’s international image, these initiatives reveal Obama’s insensitivity to the international arena and arrogance.

Comment by Sam Deakins

I hope he does not forget to bring along his Obama Presidential Seal. The Germans would love it.

Why are people angry he’s going to Germany. McCain is touting himself as having visited a far greater number of countries during this campaign. Now Obama wants to go and you complain about who pays. Grow up. The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin is a great spot to speak. Bush had to cry to German Chancelor to stop that one. what a joke republicans are. can’t wait until they’re out.

How bad did it fail that Bushie times that recuse from FARC rebels while McCain was down there. How low will they go and still not be able to dent Obama armor? You must feel really bad. And it shows by your posts. I have sometoilet tissue you can wipe your nose with, slobberers.

HEY BARACK!

Don’t take domestic politics overseas! That is “tasteless and offensive” to the host country. No issues speeches needed, nor welcomed Nothing more than a short “thank-you” speech when you step off, and again when you step back on the plane.

Obama should speak at Heidelburg University where Karl Marx received his doctorate.

obama will probably make a speech about concentration camps housing typical jewish people and how some wonderful communists were violated in the exact same camps.

when will obama abandon those segments in his party and start drilling, my guess is when gas is at $8.00. an energy expert said we could have oil in 1-1.5 years becasue the infrastructure is already there. wind 20+ yrs, nuclear 15 years.

Comment by Karl-Peter Müller

Our Zeppeling Field held many rallies in the past. This should do nicely for the democratic party, very fitting.

Wow what a bunch of obama haters!! You’ll hatred are really clouding your views. Nevertheless, McSame has no chance in Noverber. He looks so “has been” and outa touch!

Comment by Tom Kaye

First we had those on the right questioning Obama’s experience, both domestic and foreign. Then McCain stated Obama hasn’t been to Iraq in years.

Now Obama is taking the time to go to Europe, Afghanistan and Iraq to get that “experience” and the right is complaining about it.

What a bunch of hypocrits!

Comment by Alice in Wonderland

RE: Tom Kaye

And you think Obama is using this campaign and European trip to GET experience?

Only goes to prove, he has none and is hopelessly naive and uninformed on world affairs. He is not qualified at all to be president of the US or even to be running as a serious candidate. Bring back a qualified candidate, Hillary Clinton!

Of course, he has all the Hollywood money, all the Howard Deanocrats’ money, all the Kerry money, all the Soros money — to get his education with. What a situation! Obama is just too stupid for words. A clown in a suit.

I hope he doesn’t trigger a world war while he puts his foot in his mouth — as he has so many times before. Someone should tell him he is just an ordinary citizen (probably not natural born though!!!!!) like us and he should just shut up, go to a few dozen German libraries and historical sites — and try to learn from the Germans…they are a lot wiser than this little squirt could hope to be. And….they know how to handle appeasers like him.

Someone should also tell him he’s not resident. I mean someone has to read him the facts of life sometime…

As a true american citizen i can see a races a mile away so why don’t you all grow up and keep your comments above board. This country will never get any better with individuals like you. I was always taught that if you don’t have anything good to say about someone don’t say anything at all. I look at the views of an individual and not the color of the skin. Take a good look in the mirror do you think you are better than anyone else, if you do you need to get a second opinion. Vote for the canadite who is best for the country we can’t stand another year of the current administration and four years is unthinkable grow up and put your bad feeling behind you otherwise you will own a car but can’t afford gas to drive to look for a job that has been our sourced. Think before you put your mouth in action.

I am proud to be a Barack Obama supporter–It is a shame how Fox news, the New Yorker Magazine, the Bill O’Rielly’s of this world have to smear such an intelligent individual. Maybe you could now hire THE REV Jessie Jackson for a spot show. Does this all show how anxious people like Fox are getting that Barack will make a great president!!

Comment by Jerry Allsman

Obama wants to lay out his plans for rebuilding an alliance, and he and the German Chancellor can not even come to terms on where Obama should be allowed to give his speech!

This is too funny! Ha Ha, Ha, Ha,!!!!!!!!!!!

Comment by Jane

If he goes to Germany or any country, he should observe, learn and keep his mouth shut. Giving speeches is inappropriate. Do we really care what a foreign politician who is not the leader of that country has to say - No! Obama is so arrogant that he is an embarrassment.

Hello,
as a Berliner I am deeply embarrassed. Those of us who lived through times Ms.Merkel lived on the other side of the Iron Curtain, the concrete wall, embraced American officials with open arms and hearts when they visited. All went to the Brandenburg Gate to be able to see the inhuman seperation of a city. A senator from the US, no matter what Party, was and should be welcomed any day.
Ms Merkel would not understand this. her objection will not bring her Berliner votes on her next term. She does not speak for the city of Berlin, again the capital of Germany.
Thank you.
Heike, Sacramento, CA

The Chancellor of Germany is Angela Merkel not Andrea Merkel. Im in the military serving in Germany right now and i think its sad that most Germans I talk to know more about the political race than the Americans I talk to back home. Why is that? Here they are informed about the subjects and when I talk to people in the states there is the clueless crazy far left holding on to their insane ideals and then relativly uninfomed people from the right who hate Obama only because they are told to. I dont know anyone here in Germany who cares at all one way or another if Obama speaks here so he may be a little upset when he doesnt get a stadium full of people to listen to his babel.

Comment by wvu2743

There are ONLY 3 persons who have the RIGHT to stand at the Brandenburg Gate and give any type of significant speech: 1. Ronald Reagan (deceased), 2. Mikhail Gorbachev, and 3. the German people as a combined whole. Angela Merkel (who I respect more and more each passing day) was absolutely right in not allowing Barack Obama to speak there. He hasn’t yet EARNED that right.

Comment by Della in Clifton

I was at the Brandenburg Gate when Reagan spoke in 1987. Obama is not Ronald Reagan. He can try all he wants to but he will never be President Ronald Reagan. If he thinks it will make him look more presidential he is wrong. He is just a wannabe.

Comment by Sue Hal

Isn’t it more important that Sen. Obama be here and holding Town Hall Meetings with Sen. McCain on issues facing the USA? He is going over to speak to the German people- what about the people who actually do the voting over here? I guess it is easier to face people who will not be voting for you than to take the time to debate with your opponent on the important issues facing the country you want to lead. I guess what he his try to get across to the people is that Europe likes him so therefore you should like him-of course, Europe won’t have to live under all the programs that he is putting forward.

Your bulb went dim a while back it would seem. Barack Obama supports those who would take a human life for a “religious custom”. Wise up.

When I read about Sen Obama going to Germany and giving a big speech I thought to myself Why does he need to give a big speech there and at the Brandenburg gate where pres Reagan spoke. How arrogant. I agree that if the Sen wants to make a difference in the US he needs to be doing those town hall meetings with Sen McCain and let them debate. Going overseas is OK but making a big speech is just grandstanding, trying to be a big shot. very innappropriate.

I think Obama’s memory has failed him…..I’m pretty sure Obama’s skin color doesn’t quite fit the Germans idea of the “master race”!!!

Maybe next time he should make his speech in Switzerland!! They are a little more open minded!
