The Energy Wars

At a town hall meeting in Dayton, Ohio, Barack Obama focused his remarks on energy - something the two candidates have been sparring over for weeks. Obama has called McCain’s gas tax holiday a gimmick and says off shore drilling won’t have an impact for years. Neither fix, Obama has said, addresses the larger need to ween the country off of our dependence on oil - which McCain hasn’t addressed in his 26 years in office.

On the other side, the McCain camp has said that Obama doesn’t mind record high gas prices. Just today their campaign sent a statement to reporters reading, “Today, Barack Obama criticized wind, hydropower, domestic oil drilling, gas tax relief and nuclear power but did not offer a single proposal to bring down gas prices. The difference is Obama’s ‘Dr. No’ approach believes that every energy source has a problem and John McCain believes that every energy source can be part of the solution Americans need right now.”

In fact Obama did point out flaws with wind, hydropower, and nuclear power today at his town hall today when a voter expressed concerns on storing nuclear waste. Obama told the crowd that we have to utilize experts to figure out a way to store the waste safely because nuclear power has “a very big advantage” in that it doesn’t cause global warming and concluded that “nuclear power is gonna have to be a part of the mix. I know some people don’t like to hear that, but there is no perfect energy source.”

So what did “Dr. No” take issue with? Read part of his answer below:

“Every energy source has a problem, even energy sources that sound really clean, like for example hydropower. I was in Oregon, it turns out it’s messing up the salmon runs and the fish are being affected. You know wind is a great energy source except sometimes it’s not windy…I don’t think we can eliminate any single energy source….Solar, wind, biofuels - all these different approaches we should try and make different investments and figure out what works.”

While it may be a stretch for the McCain campaign to characterize the presumptive Democratic nominee as “Dr. No” when it comes to alternative energy, Obama also got in on the action. “[McCain's] voted against alternative sources of energy.  Against clean biofuels.  Against solar power.  Against wind power.  Against an energy bill that represented the largest investment in renewable sources of energy in the history of this country. So when John McCain talks about the failure of politicians in Washington to do anything about our energy crisis, understand that John McCain should look in the mirror because he has been a part of that failure,” Obama said of his Republican rival.

Obama has said it all….NO independence in the near future….for I do not believe in increasing supply….AND…Is there a problem with high gas prices…he says MAYBE…only problem is that they went up too fast….BUT OBAMA HAS NO REAL PROBLEM WITH THE PRICE….unfortunately this does not define where does his concerns begin$5, $6,$7 or $8 per gallon. If you use the EU or the UK as a barometer…theirs is near $8 per gallon…so is this the limit Obama would say there is a problem. I can not get over the ABSOLUTE RELUCTANCE TO DRILL in GOOD REGIONS that the dems are expressing and continue with near total lack of interest in increasing supply. Now Pelosi says Bush needs to violate the law to open our reserves when the real effort needs to open all areas to drilling…the quicker the better. True it will take years to bring nuke power on line and the first oil from new off-shore site will be much shorter than nuke…BUT LET’S GET GOING!!!!! Remember…this is private industry investing millions and they do not want dry wells…you have to give them a strong positive risk indicator or else they will not do it at a pace which will provide rapid supply. The USA does not have their own nationalized oil exploration groups which can respond on a dime thus this lack of support from the dems further complicates the issues for all citizens. McCain has to push the voters into realizing how this extreme reluctance WILL harm everyone and as things are going the price of gas is not coming down anytime soon. Pure and simple…the dems continue to want the USA DEPENDENT on foreign sources for the near future and are NOT INTERESTED in exploring ALL solutions in a viable and aggressive manner…..just imagine what they would desire if elected….THIS SHOULD BE A MAKE IT HAPPEN OR NOT BE ELECTED FOR EACH AND EVERY CONGRESSIONAL MEMBER AND PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE……..just talking about it with no real action IS NOT THE SOLUTION!!!

I just wish congress would be responsible and get things moving. Instead of blaming each other they need to work together and compromise. There is plenty of blame to go around on all sides but PLEASE let’s do something. No wonder the congress has it’s lowest ratings ever. I hope it is not another 30 years from now until we get started. We could have had this under control by now if we had done something in the 1970’s.

Obama likes nuclear because he has financial ties to that industry. Sure it is not always windy in a particular place, but it is always windy *somewhere*. And I don’t think anyone ever got cancer from living near a windmill.

Mr. Obama criticizes Mr. McCain on his proposals - McCain criticizes Obama- now this is really helping the people. Mr. O. has proposed a stimulus check to go to the people so they can help fray the cost of gas- well, the people will buy gas with the money, yet the government gets a return thru the GAS TAX. What is the proposal in the SHORT TERM while these other sources are being made AVAILABE and AFFORDABLE to the American people. If the people are so against foreign oil then why can’t we drill here-that would put an end to us supporting the Saudi’s and OPEC. Yes, we drill and work to get the other alternatives up and running at the same time.. I guess it goes to show us that it is our esteemed Reps. in DC that are the ones truly responsible for this mess as Presidents come and go. IT APPEARS TO ME THAT THE ONES OPPOSING DRILLING IN THE SHORT TERM ARE THE ONES WHO TRULY SUPPORT FOREIGN OIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We can all agree that Americans love to travel and we like our stuff (commodities). We can also agree that we want a clean environment and cheap energy sources that will enable us to be mobile and comfortable. So what is the vision for America’s energy future? Or do we need to think global energy? We can agree that mobility, stuff, and family comforts are not just set aside for Americans. Is it possible to strive for a global solution? We can all agree that a global solution would be fantastic! Let’s look at the energy technologies that are available to us today:

• Fossil fuels
• Nuclear energy
• Wind power
• Solar power
• Wave power
• Fuel cells
• Bio-fuels
• Thermal generation
• Hydroelectric power
• Hydrogen fuel

Wow, eleven viable technologies that can be put to use today. So what is the problem? Where is the vision for the future of our world? Is it possible to get past the political and religious posturing manufactured to promote personal agendas of power and greed? Don’t get me wrong I am a capitalist and investor. What grips me is the waste of opportunities to work together for common goals. Are our leaders failing us or may it be that humanity is not ready for a global solution. So let’s start at home (USA) and lead the way to energy intelligence.

• Solar cells on the roof of every American home that will feed the grid and charge the battery in at least one personal electric vehicle.
• Build nuclear power plants and work with environmentalist to negotiate dependable environmental safeguards.
• Develop “our” oil industry with redundant environmental safeguards in place.
• Build the dams for hydroelectric plants the will also supply fresh water and flood protection.
• Develop all alternate energy sources today….now!

Bottom line is we need a leader that can rally the experts in the field, motivate the politicians to disregard special interest groups and fix the energy problems in “our” country. Well defined energy goals will restore confidence in our economy, create jobs for our men and women so they can earn the money needed to live the dream while consuming responsibly. We can all agree that the energy crisis is nothing new and we can’t seem to learn from our mistakes. We need a leader that can create a plan of action that will solve our energy needs of today and well into the future!

Have McSame address the issue of Disposal of the spent fuel from the Nuclear Plants???????

Ouch, Obama fires back at McCains “Dr. No” voting record. It’s a shame the very thing that McCain touts, his voting record, will clearly show that he is against the very solutions he is now “for”.

Flip-flopping…pandering, call it what you will.

Comment by thomas

Southern Dem,

You need to realize european prices are that high due to much higher fuel taxes and VAT on top of those taxes. If you removed those taxes, it would be much closer to the price of American gasoline. They raised taxes to curb fuel consumption.

Comment by the southern dem

Obama’s response to nuclear has all along…well if you can solve the disposal issue them maybe I’ll support nukes. Now look, nuke plants are NOT NEW…sure it would be nice to have central or regional disposals but that by itself is a hot potato which no one wants to do anything about….SO WE ALL JUST SIT ON OUR HANDS ????? BET REAL….EU/UK have going after nuclear big time and doing well with it and yet the USA just sits on it’s hands….Like I said either provide an immediate solution to get the projects going or get out of the way….we need to act NOW….we can fight the disposal issue in time…but disposal over the part 30 years has not caused an issue so why are we making it a SHOW STOPPER??????? Get started congressionalk types or GET ANOTHER JOB and that goes for Obama. Why do we let these jokers sitting on their hands KEEP THE USA DEPENDENT ON FOSSIL FUELS……the dems sure have continually stopped action here…but also a few republicians too.

the soaring gas prices have absolutely nothing to do with supply. there is plenty of oil to go around. this is all based on speculation. everytime anything happens in the news, the price of oil goes up. when iran tested their long range missles eariler this week, oil went up $1.80 a barrel. the government needs to do something about this ridiculousness, but they won’t. the reason is the oil companies are making tons of money, and they are all getting their cuts of the profits. do you honestly think bush cares if regular americans are suffering because of the out of control gas prices? nope. he and his rich friends don’t have such concerns, so who cares? on top of all that, the idiot is trying to start ANOTHER senseless war with iran now. the country is already falling apart, and falling deeper and deeper in debt, and he wants to start another war. great. i will be glad when that moron is finally out of office.

I think that the fact that there is not a supply issue should be addressed….
I will shout this!
WE HAVE NO SHORTAGE OF OIL… DRILLING FOR MORE OIL WILL NOT FIX THE PROBLEM!…

what we have is a shortage of refineries …. and Big Oil refuses to build more refineries… they are shutting them down instead…. Why the Obama campaign hasn’t picked up on this is beyond me…

However, Obama has it right…, we need to make it a National Initiative to wean ourselves off of fossil fuels for power… we will still need them for plastic and other non-fuel goods…

Obama 08!

Chip Edgar,  How long do you think any of this stuff could get into the gas stations?// And how long do you think auto makers would take to have all their models use all this stuff.I dont know about you but I could not afford any solar panels, and I doubt very much that is windy enough to heat and cool billions of homes.   Besides that they are tpp expensive too.  The libs dont want nucluear plants by them. You could get oil sooner than any of those get real there isnt any we could use right now and you know iut. drilling for oil would be sooner that any of the others. It would be o.k. if we worked on your list while we are using our oil.

First of all the oil reserve is for the military and not enough to last until the morons decide to drill for our own, next I can understand selling any business owned in the United States with the fear of Dems in the White House and the congress. Can you say TAXED TO DEATH? Take a good look around you, all the businesses are bailing out as fast as they can and you still do not get it? Why do you think Hall Mark, Lazy Boy, GM, Banking, and all the other companies are going over seas, because they can no longer make a profit. So lets add more taxes, more insurance, more social security, more money for capital gains out of them and see what is left. Small businesses are already going by the thousands and big business is fleeing for their lifes so go Obama just add more on them we don’t need to work. Heck I saw a big box outside the GE store just yesturday so I guess I’ll grab it today. Darn I don’t want GE boxes they support Iran and Obama. Guess I’ll just sleep in my car in some parking lot in some city some where while I get all that free crap no one is able to pay for.

Comment by Tim Chastain

Why don’t we let Congress feel the pain? From now on every time they have to go anywhere on business or vacation, make them pay for the fuel that they use out of their own salary. Or make it so that anytime the approval rating drops below say, 40%, we could deduct 1% of their annual salary for every point it goes below the agreed upon number and use it to finance the debt. At the rate Pelosi and her group of goons are going the budget would be balanced in just a few short years. And make it so the only way that it can be repealed is with a national election with a minimum of 70% yes votes to do it.

i dont understand a few things about people’s perspective, and the news. I go onto bill o’reilly and see “fair to everyone” IF you are fair to everyone, why do you have to keep telling everyone that, unless they would doubt it. Then it says “tackles tough issues” How can you Tackle an issue without having a strong belief and stance on one side of that issue? then on this blog they repeatedly refer to barack obama as “dr. no” that would be like a liberal news organization calling mcCain “dr geezer” or something. Why the cheap shots, why the disregard for unbias? If America is great… dont we deserve Unbias? why do people have to give positive and negative connotations to their perspective at the expense of dividing us?

If President Kennedy can walk into the white house and guarantee that we would be in space and on the moon within 10 years during his presidency in the 1960’s, which they actually did in 8 years……WHY CAN”T WE DRILL FOR OIL HERE AND HAVE IT IN BARRELS AND READY FOR REFINING in less than that with the technology of today??????????

Gramm was right…we have become a nation of whiners. Perk up people and find that American spirit. You don’t need a President to find inspiration in your own heart.

To that “Show Me” guy….

You may think that supply is okay, and that it is fine to give $600Billion to Terrorist states! But, I believe we need to drill more at home, and continue to invest in alternative energy. The USA needs to be self sufficient…we cannot continue on our current plan…or in Obama’s hope for change - but, let’s not do anything but hope….method of energy policy.

Unfortunately, we don’t know what alternative energies will complete get us off oil…but, a good policy is to invest in many different sources.

It is easy to criticize Obama because he doesn’t want to jump into any one new form of energy, but you have to look at the facts. Every energy source has its problem. Some of you say “just put solar panels on every house”, “It may not be windy all the time in one place but it is windy somewhere”. How much does it cost to convert a house to solar power, do you have the money? How much energy does wind power produce, is it enough to power a plant let alone a city? Just have everyone drive electric cars, or hybrids. Do you have the money to buy a $60,000 car. Bet you most Americans don’t. You also criticize Obama for not wanting to drill in the U.S., but we will still be paying the price that OPEC sets. Only the oil companies will be making more of a profit. Just look up how much oil we get from Canada. It doesn’t cost the same price, but we pay that price.

If this “do nothing” Congress would just stop allowing the oil that is being drilled here from going overseas and onto the open market, and refined it here, and sold it here, the gas issue would go away. The only thing is, as Congress knows, “there ain’t no money in that.

Nancy Pelosi needs to get with the program. She has the Congress stopped and the Demacrates going along with it. She needs to be Voted out of office and Soon…I hope that the people in her district is getting the message. The democrates do not see the over all picture, and after all, with the money we pay them, $4.00 a gallon, does not even hit their wallet. Cause?? well they charge their gas to their office for expense. She needs to get off the ball, and get it moving again, and follow suite with Bush and release the strangle hold they have on the out contintuel self, and get drilling moving. Just by this act alone will start the gas price dropping.

DO SOMETHING NOW, MS NANCY PELOSI..I AM SICK OF PUTTING MY MY TWO MEALS A DAY IN MY GAS TANK, ONLY FEEDING MYSELF, WIFE AND THREE KIDS ONE MEAL ADAY TO GET ENOUGH MONEY TO WORK MY TWO MIMIMUM WAGE JOBS !!! I BET YOU A WEEK PAY, THAT YOU DON’T HAVE THE “GUTS” DO MY WORK FOR ONE DAY LET ALONE SIX DAYS A WEEK.

Diane,

The problem with Drilling is simply this. When the Oil companies get a hold of that oil, it is then put on the GLOBAL market. Priced to the highest bidder. If china wants to pay more for that oil, CHINA will get the oil that is being pumped from American oil fields/offshore drill sites.

People neglect to mention that is one of many reasons why drilling for oil will barely make an impact on the GLOBAL price of oil. If the oil companies only distributed oil to Americans, then it would make a direct impact.

Again the Dr. No comment has been debunked.

From FactCheck.org
http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/a_false_accusation_about_energy.html

McCain doesn’t support Wind and Solar investments, while he only supports Nuclear…and now after flip-flopping drilling for oil. Obama supports all energy with the exception of new drilling, as long as it is safe.

On the drilling story, I for one won’t get that happy tingle inside based on the prospect of drilling oil being pumped in 10-15 years. I would in fact be considerably upset if that is the solution Congress takes. In 10-15 years world consumption will have increase considerably. Think about the prices at the pump in the US since 2000. I remember paying 89c /gallon back in 2000. That’s eight years for the price to jump over four times in that time frame. Which as anyone can tell, it is still rising. Imagine where the oil prices will be in another 10-15 years. Then imagine what a little impact that oil pumped will have on the global market.

Let’s not forget it was HW Bush that signed the very executive order that his son lifted. Let us not forget for 6 of the soon to be 8 years of this administration, it was Republicans at the helm that did nothing in the interest of the citizens. I think people are so divided on party lines they fail to see the big picture. The Government of which Congress and the Executive branch, regardless of who holds the majority is not looking of for the citizens who elect them. They are self-serving entities who are only interested in re-election.

A little post era humor here:

Oil raises to 33 dollars a barrel.

Comment by bigjohnson

the problem we have is that we aren’t even drilling enough where we can. they already know where oil deposits are and aren’t. we need to look at why the oil companies are holding back.
its easier to drill where its already known. we can can explore but we need to ask why arent you drilling enough in the area your supposed to? its called controlling pricing. oil comapanies will do the same with those areas once opened up. they will control the output and the drilling so we end up in the same.

Obama has no viable energy plan. Period.

We all would like to transition to alternate sources of energy when available, practical and affordable; meanwhile, oil, coal and nuclear should be developed ASAP.

Between the hysterical Harry Reid (”oil makes us all sick”), Dr. NoBama and the Green “nuts”, we might began to think of “The Flintstones” as “upscale” transportation.

McCain has a sure plan for right now. Lift the ban on drilling, Nucleur Power Plants, turbine windmills for energy, alternate energy cars, etc.
And I have a plan to save costs for transportation for our Government workers. Do it like the Military. Motor pools with Dispatchers. Let ‘em do it for the love of their country!!
