Obama Rakes in $$ at Chicago Fundraisers

Barack Obama pulled in around $2 million in Thursday night, appearing at two Chicago fundraisers. So what do high rolling donors get for the steep cost of attending?

According to the pool report, mini beef tenderloin burgers, champagne, crab salad in pastry, and fruit parfait. Not to mention the company of high profile Obama supporters like Tour de France winner Greg Lemond and ComEd CEO Frank Clark. Of course there’s also the chance to get to talk with the presumptive Democratic nominee, Barack Obama in a more intimate setting than those 20,000+ person rallies he often holds.

At his $28,500/head White House Victory Fund engagement, Obama “talked to nearly everyone in the room (by his own estimation),” and at the latter event where most of the 150 in attendance paid $2,300 to get in, Obama joked with the crowd about his bicycling outfit made infamous in an AP still taken last weekend.

AP

An excerpt from the pool report:

“When one bicycle enthusiast yelled out, “Thanks for wearing a helmet!” Mr. Obama suggested that before donning the helmet, he remembered one of the cardinal rules of politics: never allow yourself to be photographed wearing nerdy headgear.

“I had an internal debate,” he said. “Because I knew that the AP was going to take a picture, and they were trying to portray it like Dukakis wearing that tank helmet. But I wanted to make sure that the children who saw that picture knew that even the Democratic nominee for president wears a helmet when he goes biking. (Hearty applause.)

“Now, obviously the rest of my apparel was apparently not up to snuff, because I got a hard time from all sorts of blogs,” he said, “Who said I looked like Urkel.”

Senator Barack Obama appeared at back-to-back fundraisers in Chicago Thursday evening.

Venue one was a benefit for the White House Victory Fund, at the home of Sara and James Star in Lincoln Park. The entrance fee: $28,500 a head. Sixty people attended. Total estimated haul: $1.7 million.

Before Mr. Obama arrived, the guests waited on the first floor of the incredibly large and ornate home, eating mini beef tenderloin burgers and drinking white wine and Champagne. Mr. Obama arrived at 6:45, mingled for a while, talked to nearly everyone in the room (by his own estimate) and then moved upstairs to speak in a large, cathedral-ceilinged room decorated with oil paintings and a large bronze sculpture of a crouching insect.

Mr. Obama thanked everyone for their longtime support. “There are people in this room who were with me for my first state Senate race,” he said. “My main job here is to just say thank you.”

There were a few of his most notable friends and fundraisers in the room, including Penny Pritzker and Valerie Jarrett.

Mr. Obama promised that because he was in the company of friends, he would not make a long speech. In the end, he spoke for about 20 minutes, talking about how the country was hungry for change, how he intends to win, how John McCain represents the past and how there are “seismic shifts taking place in the world.”

Mr. Obama talked briefly about tax policy, telling the group that in Mr. McCain’s tax proposals, one-fourth of these new tax cuts would go to people making $2.8 million or more in salary. He wisely did not ask for a show of hands in this $25,000-a-head-crowd to see who makes that much money, as he did earlier in the day at an event in Wisconsin.

At one point, Mr. Obama looked around the room for Rick Fizdale, a contributor who five minutes earlier had quietly slipped outside and left. Mr. Fizdale, a former Leo Burnett executive, had left wearing a homemade nametag bearing the words “Rick Hussein Fizdale.” (Everyone else wore printed nametags.)

“They have these wonderful stickers that said, ‘Rick Hussein Fizdale,’” Mr. Obama said. “The theory was, we’re all Hussein.”

He went on: “But that accurately captures, I think, the strategy. Come on. They’re going to try to make me into a scary guy. They’re even trying to make Michelle into a scary person. Right? And so that drumbeat – we’re not sure if he’s patriotic or not, we’re not sure if he is too black. I don’t know, before I wasn’t black enough. Now he might be too black. We don’t know whether he’s going to socialize – well, who knows what.”

After telling everyone that the race is “three-quarters of the way done,” he finished speaking, and there was coffee, fruit parfait, cheese and crackers.

Fundraiser Number Two:

Venue Two was the home of Leah Missbach Day and F.K. Day in the West Loop, right across the street from Harpo Studios. Most of the guests paid $2,300 each to attend, and roughly 150 people were in attendance. The hosts listed on the invitation were as follows: Tim Blumenthal, John Burke, Patrick Cunnane, Stan Day, Steve Flagg, Chris Fortune, Jeff Frehner, Chris Lambiase, Steve Meineke, Mike Mercuri, Marc Sani, Mike Sinyard, and Mike Van Abel.

The fundraiser was held in a sprawling, two-story loft apartment decorated with an iron-accented, exposed-brick motif that could safely be called Western-rustic-industrial. A pet bird flew freely around the room. The “Yes We Can” video played on a large television screen. Waiters passed hors d’oeuvres – crab salad in pastry, tuna tartare, cheddar puffs – on cedar planks.

Mr. Obama arrived at 8:30 p.m., and was introduced by F.K. Day, the president of World Bicycle Relief, a charity group that promotes sustainable bicycle use. Standing on a slightly raised platform in the corner of the loft, Mr. Obama first acknowledged the obvious: this was a seriously bicycle-friendly crowd. Many of the people in attendance wore large royal-blue bicycle pins. Greg Lemond, the Tour de France winner, was there, along with his wife, Kathy, whom Mr. Obama pointed out in the crowd.

“This was the fittest host committee that has ever organized an Obama event,” Mr. Obama said.

He paused to mention his much-photographed bike ride with one of his daughters last Sunday. “There was no setup,” Mr. Obama promised. “I was not trying to pander to this crowd.”

When one bicycle enthusiast yelled out, “Thanks for wearing a helmet!” Mr. Obama suggested that before donning the helmet, he remembered one of the cardinal rules of politics: never allow yourself to be photographed wearing nerdy headgear.

“I had an internal debate,” he said. “Because I knew that the A.P. was going to take a picture, and they were trying to portray it like Dukakis wearing that tank helmet.

After Mr. Obama finished his speech, he took three questions: one on nuclear power, one on his urban agenda, and one on conflict in the Middle East.

Then, after giving thanks to the donors, he shook some hands and posed for pictures.

How incredibly facinating.

How incredibly facinating.

At least the donors in Chicago got to see him….I guess the checks were bigger then the ones Rendell was working on getting for him.

I am from a small southern town-here if you vote for Obama you cannot put a bumper sticker on your car or a sign in your yard.
It is ok to vote for him, just dont let your neighbors know it
A black man will not get it this year-too many people against it still
I see an uprising against him if he does get it
People are very angry here

And exactly how mooch money did he receive from corporate donors under the guise of “personal contributions.” It would be interesting to see the balance sheets of his old corporate donors and lobbyists (not to mention Harpo, do you really think that Oprah is not channeling money legally or illegally into Obama’s campaign?) Obama is a typical Chicago politician - corrupt. After 30 years of being a very loyal Democrat I am leaving the party. I have never supported any Republican for any office. Since the Democratic Party’s total capitulation to Obama I have been ashamed to say that I am a Democrat. I will vote straight ticket republican until Obama and all of his disgusting supporters are gone. I am sickened that my party has become the puppet of one arrogant, egomaniacal man. I will fight hard to see Obama and Democrats defeated in November. The party is listening to the fringe of the party and it sickens and saddens me. I do not believe in the Republican ideology, but the democratic cave-in is worse. It is obvious that a Democratically controlled congress will do nothing but rubber stamp Obama’s every whim. In 4 years Democrats will be seen as no better than the Republicans under G.W. Bush and the Republican controlled congress prior to 2006. I guess it’s time for the Democratic Party to make hay, because when the true measure of this election is taken, the entire party will come out looking corrupt.

It’s a sorry day when I have to tune into the Fixed Noise network to get accurate coverage of this election. Their tag line - fair and balanced – is a joke, but at least I can stomach their conservative bias. When I tune into the mainstream news, I get sick. The mainstream media in this country have made it their mission to help elect Barack Obama to the presidency. They trashed Hillary Clinton to assure Obama’s nomination. I have no doubt they will now turn on John McCain. As a moderate Democrat, I intend to vote AGAINST Barack Obama in November. My reason is simple: CBS, NBC, ABC, Russert, Mathews, Blabbermouth and the rest of the Obama whores at MSNBC. The press has no business using the power of their pens and microphones to actively promote a presidential candidate. Their role is to report the news, not shape it. On principle, I will vote against any candidate I feel the press is trying to shove down my throat. I voted for Hillary Clinton in the primaries because of the media bias against her. If the media had favored her and trashed Obama, I would have voted for him. I truly HATE the press in this country, and I will always vote to counter their aims. And I don’t give a damn about any research council showing coverage was balanced in this election. There is no way a researcher can measure bias because much of the bias comes from simply choosing what stories to cover, or withholding information that viewers have a right to know. Nor can they measure the extent to which the media takes a candidate’s remarks out of context in order to paint him or her in a particular way. I know what I’ve seen with my own two eyes, and this campaign season has been all about making Obama look good and everyone else look bad. I have no doubt that this country wouldn’t even know about Obama’s membership in a racist, anti-Semitic church had YOU TUBE not started playing the Jeremiah Wright clips on the Internet. At that point, the press could no longer ignore the Wright situation. If not for the Internet and YOU TUBE, the mainstream press would have covered up the entire Wright mess. Now that they’ve successfully done Obama’s bidding and painted the Clintons as the ultimate racists of all time, I wonder what they have in store for John McCain?? Probably the same strategy. I can see it coming – if Obama loses this election, the liberal press will proclaim that America is a fundamentally racist country and not yet ready for a black president. The shady friends, the crazy church, the lack of good judgment, the hypocrisy in playing the race card while condemning other people for playing the race card, the sleazy campaign tactics like bussing in college kids from Illinois to participate in the Iowa caucus, the crazy tax schemes – these will all be forgotten. Every liberal newspaper and news network in the country will decry America’s inherent racism. I can just see it coming. Can’t you?

A Black Man

Why is it that a Black Man can create a tiny piece called a filament (electric light - Lewis Latimer) that allows people to see in the dark?

But can’t be seen fit to lead a country to the true light.

Why is it that a Black Man can create an instrument (clock - Benjamin Banneker) that all people use to tell time?

But people don’t think it is time for him to run a country.

Why is it that a Black Man can design a place for the high authorities to meet in and a place for the president to live in (The Capital and the White House Phillip Reid (a slave) and Pierre L’Enfant)?

But is not good enough to lead these meetings or live there himself.

Why is it that a Black Man was brilliant enough to do the first open heart surgery (Dr. Daniel Hale Williams) and show the world how to get and preserve plasma (Dr. Charles Drew)?

But not good enough to put a program in place where everyone can afford the surgery.

Why is it that a Black Man was creative enough to design an instrument (traffic light - Garrett Morgan) to bring multiple people (traffic) to a halt?

But not seen creative enough to design a plan to bring all this unnecessary and worthless fighting between countries to an end.

Why is it that a Black Man could create the soles (shoes - Jan Matzeliger) that people walk on every day?

But not seen as good enough to fill the shoes of a bad president.

Why is it that a Black Man was smart enough and brave enough to teach himself (Fredrick Douglas and Thomas Fuller - both slaves) and others how to read, write and/or calculate math?

But not seen smart enough and bold enough to calculate a platform to be President of a country that sure needs another first by us.

So you see my Brother and Sisters what I am saying is let us not forgot our past, which led us to our present and can definitely be the backbone to our future. We were good enough, smart enough, creative enough, and bold enough then, so let us all give Obama the chance to show that we are still these things and more. We all are as strong as our weakest link, so do not be that weak link that denies our people that chance to show we still can OVERCOME AND BE THE FIRST!

OUR NEXT PRESIDENT OF THESE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!

LET US ALL CONTINUE PRAYING THAT THIS PRESIDENT WILL ADHERE TO AND BE LED BY GOD.

And please, would someone let all of these counter-racists out there like Stephanye know that the Democrats I have known and campaigned with for 34 years are not averse to a black man or woman as President. We just want someone who is qualified, honest and not a racist himself.

OK let’s look at his tax package, we tax companies so they make less profit and we call it win fall taxes, history proves that a company that makes big profits exspand and hire more people who pay more taxes and when the companies make even more profit they exspand more and create more jobs and hire more people who pay more taxes and so on and so forth. So the solution to our economy is to put more taxes on those same companies instead of tax breaks so they have less profit get sick of it and close shop and move to Mexico, Indea, China, and other nations and we have less jobs and less taxes and less buying and more unemployment and more poor. Yes I can see why people would want that. It makes perfect sense to do that. Look at say Westinghouse, they started with one little washing machine, as they grew so did their company and the people they hired and the taxes from the jobs and the company. In exspanding they created other companies for other people to sell their product and hire more people who pay more taxes and so on and so forth. Oh yeah, Westinghouse is closing doors because they can’t make a profit and they are moving slowly to other countries. So let’s ignore them, we should ignore Hall mark too, and all the other companies that are leaving the U.S.A. because congress and Obama has a better idea. Just tax the profits away. Good Idea, and you think it’s his race that makes us not want him in office? Not me, I don’t because I know with less jobs you have less spending, which means less profits which means less jobs which means less spending….. you get the picture?

Comment by KC

In order to fix the economy you have to have jobs, and companies are not charity organizations or they would be tax exempt. They are there to make a profit and when they do they hire more people and exspand. That is how it works and always has. You might want to think about why congress is buying bio-fuel from Brizil splashing it with American diesel and selling it for a dallor less a gallon to europe and calling it Splash and Dash. That makes sense also while we are being hit with high gas prices. We are not allowed to buy any fuel from Brizil for our use but we take a loss on the same fuel buying and selling it to europe. That is another reason I do not want the DNC electing a democratic president. They can’t reason out actions and reactions. They just think let’s get more money so we can spend more money without thinking where the money will eventually come from. Every action has a reaction. And the reaction so far from higher taxes and less profits from big business has been leave this country. Jobs pay taxes, allow people to buy products, that balances the economy, with less jobs you have less spending and end up with a tanking economy. So ask youself what do you want? A president who will tank our country or one that wont? It isn’t the color of their skin, it is their lack of thought to what their actions will create. If you use your brain you will be able to figure out that no one is going to invest their money into a company to lose it. They want a profit so they can grow. In growing they hire more people and the product they make is sold in stores that some one owns and they hire people to sell it and we, who have the jobs buy it. It is a circle and when you start to tear down the circle you end up with countries that have a high rate of poverty and are backwards as far as technology goes. Is this what you want for the U.S.A.? Get past the racism and onto the polotics of these people.

Comment by Robin C

To Stephanye: I read your post…I believe you are yet again playing some race card. And I would ask for clarification on your statement, “We all are as strong as our weakest link, so do not be that weak link that denies our people that chance to show we still can OVERCOME AND BE THE FIRST!” Who do you mean by “our people?” Are your people different than my people? Are we not all Americans? Why did you feel the need to point out particular accomplishments of black people…I could post a list of accomplishments by white people but you would call me racist. I think you race-baiters are hurting your candidate. I will never vote for him because he has no experience and he has demonstrated extremely poor judgment, in my opinion. I have no issue with the color of his skin, but the quality and quantity of his resume for the position.

Stop HATING on Obama. You haters are all just mad and intimidated by his progress. You never thought a black man would make it this far. It scares some white people beyond belief that a “black” man will be the next president of the United States. That’s the real problem. I respect the whites more who come out and say straight up that they are not voting for him because he’s black. At least they are honest. Instead you have cowards that use false excuses and reasons like he doesn’t have enough experience or he uses too many catchy phrases. If you don’t like him or won’t vote for him because he’s black, just say so. Some people were just raised to hate black people. Now as adults it’s just in them and they refuse to escape their racist way of thinking. Well get ready because there is one black man much greater than Obama that everyone will have to face in the end.

Comment by A Tru Amerikan

Robin C. By saying our people, she meant the American people. But if you didn’t veiw that comment as a white person, but as an American, you would know that. I’m young so I haven’t had to face much racism. But being the grandson of a white woman and a black man, in the south, I’ve seen enough. Its amazing how we’ve never really painted a president as racist, but as soon as Obama runs(a Black Man), they try to paint him as one. Let me explain something. He was raised by his mother and grandmother, white women. His father, a black man abandoned him. His mother remarried another black man and he abandoned them. Now I’m not the smartest man on earth. But if I was in that situation, I would tend to favor the white side of my family, therefor white people. But on a bigger scale, he puts all that aside and fights for all people. If you dont like a person veiws, thats fine. You have every right to fight against them. Attack his veiws as much as you can. But leave race out of it. That’s not just for white people. Black should study Obama and vote for him because they think he’s right for the job, not because he’s black. If you only vote for him cause he’s black, you probably shouldn’t be voting. People need to wake up in this country. Im a black man, And a white. Mixed yall call me. Lets have clean politics. Attack veiws and character, not race. and last. People try to paint Obama as a Muslim. If you are a true American, you beleive in the constitution. The constitution gives us freedom of religion. If he was muslim, He still has the right to be president. It doesn’t say freedom of religion, ecept when you’re running for president. Yall people need to wake up. Oh yeah Robin, when I say yall people, I mean all Americans.

P.S. Im not a republican or a democrat. And I don’t know who I’m voting for yet.

What do you mean hate? I don’t hate him, I don’t agree with him. If I don’t agree with the man does not mean I or any one else hates him or is raciest. Not every one thinks loosing more jobs and companies to other countries is what we want. What do you think will happen if capital gains tax goes on a company for making profits? THEY WILL LEAVE THIS COUNTRY WITH THIER JOBS!!! Just like the other companies who are over taxed, expected to pay high wages and give every one top dallor benifits, and pay for workers comp, unemployment, (which they can not draw even though they pay it when congress runs them out of business), and higher overhead for the equipment and products to run their companies. That is why I would not vote for a man who wants to do just that. Tax breaks encourage companies to stay open and hire people and exspand. So would the fact if all the, my name is Jimmy give me all you will give me, would figure this out.

Comment by KC

Not only that but I hear more racist remarks from Obama supporters. You tend to think because people do not like his polocies, his connection to evil people who hate the United States and whites, and he has lied it has been proven, that we dislike him because of his race. News flash, I don’t like skin heads, KKK members, radical muslems, or any one else that hate just because a person is diffrent than them or does not have the same faith or polotics. Get past the hate and race issues and focus on reality. The reality is his polocies suck and his friends are a little too anti-American.

Well this clown was blocks away from American forces spreading his propaganda that “we are defeating the in infidels” Well that clown and Obama come from the same mold as far as I am concerned, and I truely feel sorry for anyone who is so simple or weak minded to buy into such junk propaganda. Obama winning in November would just confirm my beliefs that America and truely forgot what made this country great in the first place!

it never ceases to amaze me how some people who are racially biased are so blind to it. you have closed your minds and your hearts. How much Experience did George Washington have before he was elected President? How much did Lincoln have? They were still great presidents. Why? Because they had a vision for this country and what it could be for all people. You all need to get past your petty prejudices and preconceived notions and listen to what Obama says and why and most of all how he plans to implement his policies. Have those with so much experience don such a great job after all. More countries hate this county than ever,does that make us safer? We as a People are at times to arrogent. We don’t own the world and we can’t live in the world as if we are the only ones in it. No man is an island.

OBAMA PAYS THE DELEGATES — THE DELEGATES VOTE — “WE THE PEOPLE” DON’T COUNT!

WE NEED TO REPLACE THE DEMOCRATS IN CONGRESS!

OBAMA WON’T ANSWER THE QUESTIONS OF “WE THE PEOPLE” AT A TOWN HALL MEETING BUT HE WILL GO ON A “COMEDY” SHOW?

Since voting in a Democratic Congress in 2006 we have seen:

1) Consumer confidence plummet;
2) The cost of regular gasoline soar to over $3.50 a gallon;
3) Unemployment is up to 5% (a 10% increase);
4) American households have seen $2.3 trillion in equity value evaporate (stock and mutual fund losses);
5) Americans have seen their home equity drop by $1.2 trillion dollars;
