McCain hits Obama for gas prices remark

NASHUA, NH — Sen. McCain continued to play a man of the people on high gas prices Thursday, taking Sen. Obama to task for saying this week that he would have preferred a more “gradual adjustment” in gas price increases.

“Let me say that Senator Obama said yesterday, well he didn’t seem to mind the cost increase, it was just a little too quick,” McCain told supporters at a Granite State town hall meeting. “Well, a lot of Americans mind.”

Asked by CNBC Tuesday if higher gas prices could help the U.S. become more energy efficient, Obama said, “I think that I would have preferred a gradual adjustment. The fact that this is such a shock to American pocketbooks is not a good thing.”

Republicans have been hammering Obama for the comments, arguing that the Illinois Democrat lacks sympathy for the plight of average Americans who are now paying more than $4 a gallon to fill up their gas tanks.

“I think I’d like to point out that Senator McCain is not out of touch with the pressure on gasoline prices,”  McCain adviser Doug Holtz-Eakin said a conference call today. “He proposed a gas tax suspension for the summer that would put $600 in the pocket of a trucker buying diesel fuel, take some of the pressure off the price increases of all the things that they deliver, help American families get through the summer.”

For it’s part, the Obama campaign is arguing that the GOP is taking the quote out of context.

“This attack is ridiculous, and all it shows is how John McCain’s allies in Washington are trying to distract voters from the fact that just yesterday, they voted again to protect Big Oil’s profits-while we’re paying record prices…. No amount of partisan political attacks will change the fact that George Bush, John McCain, and their congressional allies have repeatedly stood with the oil and gas companies and against American consumers,” Obama spokesperson Jen Psaki said yesterday.

Thanks for posting the article, was certainly a great read!

Another dumb attack by McCain on Obama.

If Prices are going to rise anyway it would be better for it to happen gradually so people can adequately plan for the increase.

Looks to me like Obama just shot himself in the foot!! Very interesting that he desires gas to be as high as it is….only desired a slower rise….so is he going to give a subsidity to all americans to cover the increase and who is going to pay for this….tax payers??/ What a scam and total mistake!!

Why is Fox News the only outlet reporting on recent efforts by eco-whackos to prevent upgrades to refineries in Indiana and California?

Some how McCain is over reaching in his take on Obamas statement. When is steep pricing ever healthy? If prices rose gradually, people would been able to adjust to the increases rather than getting slapped, no make that punched in the face, with such price increases.

McCain over stepped himself this time by reading more into Obama’s statement than what Obama said. If McCain was so worried about any increase, then why has he not called for a price freeze on oil and fuels as was done in the 70’s. Of course Obama hasnt called for any freeze either, but instead, called for a slower paced increase in oil and fuel prices.

I am currently not a supporter of Obama but i’m not a McCain supporter either.

Right… So lets all vote for McCain so we can continue to cash in on the dividends of his Iraq war:

-Higher gas prices
-International humiliation
-Emboldening Iran
-Military burnout
-Trillions in debt for your kids
-Flag pins and magnetic “these colors don’t run” bumper stickers made in China.

Enjoy your low taxes, dummies.

Comment by My resignation from the RNC says it all

Dear Representative,

I hereby submit my resignation from any RNC affiliation and desire to declare myself an independent voter. Since you have express interest in my reasons for this decision and my withdrawal from all upcoming campaign activities for our national elections, I will make no secret of the fact that ever since I developed a political awareness and desire to participate in such activities within the party that I had felt for so long represented my interests, I have witnessed, promise after promise being broken under one pretext or another.

I still find Fiscal conservatism to be at the root of my core political beliefs, but I have not seen the RNC gain any meaningful victories over the last fifteen years that keep the promises of prudence in government spending and debt while lowering the tax burden of individuals at all government levels.

In other words, I still hold dear the principle that government does not have the right to run up large debts and then throw the burden on the taxpayer; the taxpayers’ right not to be taxed oppressively takes precedence even over paying back debts a government may have imprudently undertaken.

I have observed much inefficiency in the abilities of Republican elected officials to reduce the burden of tax payers at the local, state and national levels. They have provided token tax breaks for lower income earners by squeezing the middle class out of hard-earned income, and provided the extremely wealthy individuals with evermore creative tax-shelters and legal alternative means for protecting their wealth while assuming a disproportionately lower share of the tax-funding pie when compared to the middle class and the working poor.

Tired of Democratic talking points. International humiliation? We downed 2 countries for 2 our buildings. International humiliation is what we enjoyed under Clinton. From Mogadishu to USS Cole, which culminated in 9-11

Even Obama does not promise you low gas prices and you still blame it on the war. How come? The war was about oil according to you! You can’t have it both ways. That is unless you are a parrot repeating Democratic talking points.

Obama is a pinko. Pinkos love high gas prices. They would even tax double on top of what you already have to pay. How come you enjoy freedom of movement without Government control? Oh no-no, we will make sure that your moves are under control Just like your thermostat.

Obama is not Carter-II. He is Carter of today, a devoted Marxist.

It seems the only way to be upset about Obama’s remark is if you completely lack any understanding of inflation and commodities in finite supply (especially with growing demand). Then again, understanding things might make one an “elitist”. (The last thing we would want is an elite president.) Gas prices would eventually hit $4/gal anyway; it’s just a matter of time (be it 4 months or 4 centuries), if for no other reason than inflation (and there are many).

Moreover, McCain’s proposed tax holiday would likely not improve gas prices for at least 2 reasons:

1) Gas is a commodity and its price is set on an international market (not quite the same as oil, but close). If the market value of a gallon of gas is $4.00, then by taking away the 35-cent per gallon tax, companies will gain a 35-cent per gallon profit margin and keep charging you $4.00 per gallon. (Of course, it would be smart marketing for them to provide a short lull in price to make the profit-taking less noticable.) Democratic legislation to discourage any such related price gouging was just defeated by a Republican fillibuster (in opposition to a tax on windfall profits and other measures).

2) Once the 35-cent per gallon federal tax is removed, any reduction in price would result in increased demand, thereby driving up the cost. By the end of the tax holiday, fuel prices would be higher and it would be political suicide to reinstate the fuel tax, which currently pays a substantial portion of the cost of highway infrastructure development and maintenance (which are already underfunded).

McCain (and most Republicans) regularly tout unregulated free market forces as a panacea, but if the supply of oil is diminishing and demand is increasing, what makes Mr. McCain (or anyone) think that we DESERVE cheap gas, even though we underfund alternative energy research while giving billions in annual subsidies to oil companies? That is NOT a level playing field.

Finally, with relation to McCain’s support of drilling in ANWR, let’s forget any environmental arguments against the proposal (or any knowledge of what “refuge” means) and look solely at the economics of the proposal. Production from a new oil field influences global oil prices to the extent that the new field proportionately raises the amount of globally traded oil - and we would not see production from ANWR for at least 10 years after approval. ANWR at full production would not be a drop in the global bucket. Moreover, oil-producing countries set their amounts of traded oil to regulate the price. Even if we could increase our production enough to influence global prices (and U.S. producers chose to sell that oil rather than stock it to control prices and increase their profits, which is most likely), other producers would decrease their traded supplies to increase the price, thereby safeguarding their income.

It seems that McCain’s actions are either 1) evidence that he knows nothing about economics or 2) evidence that he believes his core support will come from uneducated people who also haven’t given this much thought (and won’t). Both might be safe bets.

Obama’s comment reminds me of a story. There were two frogs. One frog who was thrown into boiling water it was so hot the frog jumped out. The other frog jumped into a pot of cold water with a fire underneath the pot. This frog stayed in the water finding it comfortable. Each time the temperature of the water turned up a degree the frog adjusted to the new temperature. This continued until the water was boiling by then it was to late for frog to escape. Gradual is not better it just gives people a false sense of security while the situation gets worse to the point of being to late. Obama’s comment is not bad just very niave and sounds very young lacking in maturity.

Gimmeabreak, you have to be kidding (what world do you live in?).

I heard Obama’s remark and it is hard to misconstrue. This is very similiar to the remark he made about we can’t keep the temperatures of our houses the way we want. Obama and his friends in the Democratic party have a desire to change the landscape of America; Just not in a good way. They watch gas and energy costs go up and hamper our ability to do anything about it through drilling, the construction of new nuclear enrgy plants, the construction of windmills off the coast, you name it. They must think a solution to our energy problem is going to fall out of the sky. The current Congress is going to let the tax cuts go away so they can spend more money on bigger government programs and then the taxpayer will see more money fleeeing their accounts. The Democrats are taking us one step closer to the socialistic society they have always wanted.

McCain is pathetic. Can this man ever talk about anything of substance?

Comment by bigjohnson

fact McCain has a history of being careless when it comes to GI’s. He spearheaded opposition to Sen. Jim Webb’s (D-VA) 21st Century GI Bill, helped block legislation lengthening the time soldiers spend at home between deployments, and has consistently voted against increasing funding for the Veterans Administration.
Though McCain constantly announce his support of the troops — and their support of him — his record is rhetoric.

100 years, then 2013, now its not important how long we will be there.

Comment by Rick

And McCain’s remedy is to repeal gas taxes. Oh sure, that 19 cents a gallon is going to make all the difference. I guess if you can’t beat the democrats on issues, you just have to twist their words to suit your needs. The problem with that tactic is it no longer works. It’s old, tired, overplayed, and Americans are on to it.

The solution in my opinion is nuclear power and go get oil natural gas coal wherever we can on our land and eventually become energy independant. Sure this can’t happen overnight but if we never start we will never get there. This will allow us time for technology to advance in ways that can improve our efficency even more.

The result …no need for foreign oil or the problems those countries cause. We can produce products cheaper if we control our energy prices this will improve our economy and trade defecit. To ensure the oil companies don’t get greedy and sell our oil to the highest bidder we can put an export tax of $40 per barrel of oil.

We can ensure that drilling efforts are done in a environmently friendly way. What is really intersting is CHINA is slant drilling off the coast of FL into our terrritory for OIL the Democarats won’t let us go get. The Republicans introduced a bill this week to allow this and the Democrats defeated it.

no thanks to 8 years or republican out of control spending on trillion dollar war . we know it was a lie. make matters worse, you know you will have to pay up. your going to blame the democrats on that. call them socialist or do you me owning up to republican irresponsibilities. not to mention to loss of lives.

I hate to say it but gas, food, and utility prices aren’t going up because of Obama they were there prior to him coming on the scene. Since G.W. Bush has been in office gas prices rose over 2$ a gallon over the past few years. Clinton had the economy stabilized, everybody had a job, and there was surplus. It is not so much about a republican vs. democrat; the person who has the ability to make changes to the current situation has been office for the past eight years. If gas prices are that big of a problem then there is another solution, purchase a hybrid, it uses less fuel. America has some of the most brilliant minds in the world, let them come together to figure it out. The man hasn’t got in office yet and he is already been placed on the chopping block. My goodness

OHHH Please anybody that support’s the Republican Party is a “BONE HEAD” are you people for real?? our GAS prices are high because your President that you voted for is not liked by the OIL GIANTS and they will NOT lower the OIL because they want to get BUSH it’s not about us/AMERICA its’ about how the Republican party goes around the world and treats other Countries and there leaders like they dont have any power over AMERICA and our GOVERNMENT does not even Respect other Countries….the only people benefiting from all this is the RICH = Bush/ McCain/ Republican Party!! that is why we are in 2 WARS WAR= more $$ the Rich get Richer while the tax payers are paying for it all in Higher Taxes!! When i got my Stimulas Check i paid off BILLS with it! if you didnt i feel bad for you because BUSH/McCAIN can Afford to shop for Clothes/gas/food but Middle class America cannot.

Comment by the southern dem

I believe it is in the dems best interest to make america forever dependent upon the third world/arab nations for the bulk of our oil imports….the reason being then that the us could not act unilaterally on anything in the future. Keep america linked to the outside so it will always be tied to the outside and can not act independently. Why else would they obstruct so many attempt to really make us energy independent…the dems knew along that solar/wind were a drop in the bucket for energy independence. if oil falls abruptly then it is a sure sign that the dems have something to do with it….the longer it stays up their obstruction on energy indepedence becomes obvious as does Obama statement that high gas prices are OK.

Obama really don’t know how to run his own life, much less try to become
President……All he does is empty speeches….I don’t think He really cares
about America or Americans…..God help us if he is nominated…..

Oh by the way it is congress that passes the bills to regulate prices not the president, it is congress that writes and passes the taxes not the president, it is congress that passes the budget and spends it, not the president, it is congress ttat writes the laws and passes them not the president, it is congress that is suppose to listen to the concerns of the people and work on fixing them not the president. Go look it up. So it is congress that is letting gas go up and up, so I guess there is alot of room undr that bus as Obama has worked in congress and not done squat to help fix anything. You think he might have thrown us all under the bus with his granny and the rest?

Comment by Michael in Atlanta

Is there a current gas shortage? NO!!!!

Have you seen gas stations running out of Gas, recently? NO!!!!!

Obviously, the supply and demand argument does not hold water.

The reason gas prices are so high is because gas company profits are at record highs.

What the hell is a pinko?

I think a I heard a kid use “pinko” back in 1st grade when he was referring to another kid eating a pink crayon. Gotta love them ‘Publicans.

I voted for Bush in 2004, but I’m proud to say I’m throwing my support 100% behind Obama this year. It’s time we had someone other than the typical crabby wrinkly old rich white man running this joint.

I wish BO would make up his mind. Either the POTUS is in bed with the oil companies and is deflecting any forward movement with an energy plan, or Bush doesn’t have an energy plan. You can’t have it both ways, Obama! That is dishonest. But you already know that, don’t you?

Comment by RZ

I think both parties don’t know what to do. They’re just pandering to the drive-by viewers.

It seems that everyone has already forgot what happened on 9/11. The promise that was made by our leaders was to go after every country that habors or supports terrorism. This promise warrented standing applause back then. Now, people say we should have never had this war in the first place. I agree completely!! The terrorist should have never attacked us but they did. I guess some of you think like Rev. Wright, our chickens were just coming home to roost and we deserved it.

There are a lot of people on here that really need to look up the facts before you start typing. First off congrats to KC for pointing out who creates and passes the bills that go into effect in this country - Congress. So for the other person on here who blames Bush because Gas has gone up in the past 2 years, well Democrats have lead congress for the past 2 years! But the fault with the gas prices goes to the traders not the oil companies. As for the war I have for a long time not been happy with the situation in the middle east and our role but face facts, listen to the dictators in that region. We have no choice at this point but to continue in Iraq, our leaving would be detrimental to our security now. I agree we should not have gone in the first place but you can’t go back in time and a sudden pullout or giving our enemies a date they can begin occupation is not an option we can afford now. Our prosperity has been in flux since the begining of America. It took Reagan to fix Carter’s mess, it took Clinton to fix Bush’s mess - so they say. In reality it was just the turn of cycle like the seasons. If you believe that one day we will all live happy, wealthy and without threat for the rest of our lives - then check you prescrition dosage you are overtaking.

Many of you have made so many valid points, however, lets not forget that Bushes former oil company was linked to Osma Bin Laden’s family. We can point fingers and play the blame game all day long, the point is, somethings we will never know the truth about.

google it if you’d like but Bushes involvement with Bin Laden reaches further back than 911.

Typical of Democrats. The mentality is herd the “sheeple” in the direction we want them to go. They want to push the “green” initiative at lightning speed. What better way to FORCE the American people to conform than to support and keep fuel prices high. Nice Obama! You sum up the Democratic Party nicely! People just need to read between the lines. By the way, if you’re so worried about CO2 PLANT A TREE OR TWO!!!

Obama intends to TAX everyone.
To Obama the gas prices are probably just “practice for the peons”
