Behind The Scenes at the Secret Clinton/Obama Summit

Barack Obama’s efforts to elude the press last night have been well documented, but Hillary Clinton took her own steps to evade the cameras outside her house. She ditched her normal gray Chevy Suburban for a dark minivan, followed by a small, nondescript car full of agents, which pulled out without fanfare around 8pm from her Georgetown home.

The destination? The home of Sen Dianne Feinstein of California, a long-time Clinton supporter who had offered her home as a meeting place for the two Democratic contenders to hash out differences and work to unify the party.

Feinstein provided details of the meeting to Fox Senate Producer Trish Turner, saying Sen Clinton called to take her up on the offer yesterday afternoon.

“In talking with Hillary and knowing at some point they would want to have a private conversation, I offered my home — which has some advantages in the privacy area,” Feinstein said. “She said that might be a good idea, and i didn’t hear anymore after.

“Late afternoon, she called and said can we use your home? And I said sure.”

As for the meeting itself, Feinstein said she didn’t get involved. “I welcomed them, i had a chance to talk to Hillary, who came early. I had a chance to talk with her a little bit,” she said. “Then Barack came, and I seated them in comfortable chairs by the fireplace and they had some water. Then I went upstairs to work and when they were finished he called up and I came down and said good night, and that was it.”

Asked whether Obama told her any of the details, Feinstein said “No, and I didn’t ask.”

Feinstein didn’t know whether they’d talked about the possibility of a Vice Presidential spot on the ticket for Sen Clinton, but said she supports the idea. Clinton, she said, brings constituencies “like women, elderly, like working people, certain states that are critical to win.”

“I also think it is a very good mix because it is a very historical ticket,” she said, but acknowledged that it’s Obama’s choice to make.

As for the secrecy, Feinstein defended the evasive maneuvers employed by both candidates. “This was a private conversation. It was just between Sen Obama and Sen Clinton,” she said. “I feel very strongly that they are entitled to be able to talk without having to make a statement or go out and greet the press.

MUST READ: Whitey Hoax blown wide open

Now…can we talk about real issues?

Comment by Sues

It is nice to know that Feinstein opened her house up for this so called “summit.” Now maybe she can open up herself to get some things done. I live in California and quite frankly she has not done much for us.

For all of you who claim to be Christians you should read your Bible. Scripture tells us that ‘you will know a tree the by the fruit that it bears not the company that it keeps.’ Be sure think for YOURSELF this time rather than letting hannity and limbaugh do it for you.

It had to happen and I’m glad it did…

I think Hillary gonna be a perfect running mate and then vice president

Comment by Rex

You call that behind the scenes? Guess we get to wait until we hear from them about what was discussed and the proposed “dream ticket.” Thanks for making me think I could actually hear about this though.

Someone needs to run spell check on this piece, unless of course the quoted was speaking in lowercase i’s.

Comment by Democrat

I am very impressed with the way Obama is deferential to his former opponent, cautious in making provocative statements, yet quick in getting down to it. Now, if the press would go home and take a nap so that all of those in all three campaigns could get a bit of a rest. We our here in the public don’t need daily play-by-play, especially right now. That is what makes this whole thing so exhausting.

Comment by Louise

These secretive meetings are the very thing that everyone in the “liberal” media has railed against the Bush administration. Why couldn’t they have discussed this openly on the O’Reilly Factor? What are they trying to hide? Is this the way they intend to run the White House? What is next, perhaps a closed Democratic Convention? Why not just elect Putin?

P.S. the spell checker on this website flags O’Reilly as misspelled. What’s with that?

Comment by Herman

I would hope the Clintons do not get into the White House again. Obama represents change and I don’t think he can do that with the old guard at his elbow.

Comment by isnoop

What’s going on with the capitalization in this article? There are several lowercase “I”s and at least one line starting with a lower-case letter.

Comment by KYJurisDoctor

I hope Obama did NOT eat or drink anything offered him by BILLARY “remember what happened on June 6th when Robert Kennedy got assassinated” Clinton!

Comment by Michael Kennedy

I just don’t think it would be a good thing for Obama to have to deal with Hilary’s baggage and husband during his presidency. Regardless of how much experience and influence she might bring. I am sure it will be some kind of media circus about her or Bill pulling the strings in the background.

Sens. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) are quietly working together on a good-government bill despite their campaign-trail battle over who is tougher against Washington’s special interests.

McCain’s Senate office contacted Obama’s office Monday night asking to sign on to a bill opening federal government contracts to public scrutiny, according to three knowledgeable sources.

Not that it’s any of my business, but I heard that Obama made overtures to Tom Coburn first… shhh. Too late. John Sidney McThirdWheel’s already jealous:

Before the call, Obama had been working on the measure primarily with Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), an ardent proponent of eliminating wasteful government spending and an early supporter and longtime Senate ally of McCain’s.

After learning that Obama and Coburn were introducing the bill without his backing, McCain’s staffers immediately contacted Coburn to express concern and a desire to be named as an original co-sponsor of the update. They then called Obama’s office.

Obama staffers were happy to comply with McCain’s request to sign on, an Obama adviser said, because they knew support from the two presumptive nominees could propel the legislation to passage in the final months of a packed legislative schedule.

Obama made the first move. Is this worthy to report or would you rather focus on non-issues??

Comment by Kathie C.

Isn’t it “strange” that Obama states he will have open talks with Iran, a country supplying weapons to those who have, and still seek to kill American troops in Iraq, but chose to have his meeting with Hillary in secret.

I AM ELATED AT THE PROSPECTS OF THE FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT AND FIRST WOMAN IN THE WHITE HOUSE . NOW HOW COOL IS THAT. WE HAVE INDEED PROGRESSED

Have we now descended to a new journalistic low where the use of lower-case “i”s for the first person pronoun is acceptable? Wow.

Did Hillary drink the koolaide or not?

Comment by Character Counts

This somewhat strange meeting at Dianne Feinstein’s house almost sounds like a crisis intervention. With all of the Clinton baggage, how likely is it that Hillary could be vetted. If elected Obama has a large task ahead of him. How effective would he be, with Hillary and Bill hanging around playing their usual games. I disagree with Dianne Feinstein on two counts: (a) Hillary is not a good choice for VP, and (b) the party will unify behind Barack Obama and he will be elected in November with his choice for VP.

Comment by sharad

Obama must choose VP as per his suppoerters and his choice and must not offer/ commit to clinton VP post. It appears she wants to bargain with Obama for VP post.

Comment by M Wallace

The media is busy today trying to devine the meaning of the Pres. Candidates meeting last evening.
The Democrats have underminded the popular vote and shoved their man in the top spot.
He is up there, what now?

Senator Clinton has the votes, millions of votes and even won the last two States up for grabs,
while the media was congradulating Obama for something. God only knows what. Could be the Democrats are so dumb, they let the media choose someone McCain could beat in the general election.

It means nothing to voter that a commitee or some Super-Duper tampered with the out come of the contest to throw it Obama’s way.

Their votes still belong to Senator Clinton.

So the bed you make belongs to you.
If this is correct, then Senator Clinton can do some smiling, congradulating, what ever Obama wants her to do.

But she will still walk away with the votes. They belong to Senator Clinton. All those wonderful large States belong to Clinton.
Obama owns some thing also.

He owns the idea that the Democratic Nat. Commitee did a little back room business and came out in the open to annoint him. He says he can work with Humpty Dumpty and put him togather again.
Even the worn out pundits lost their voice before Senator Clinton.

Those pundits will now ask Obama what street he organized, and who his friends are.
Ah, what the heck-It’s only the US of A we are talking about.

Comment by Ron Simpson

Why shouldn’t Hillary slip out on Bill. He’s done it numerous times on her!!

I think joining Hillary as VP to Obama’s Presidency is Great for the Country and the Democratic Party. It will solidify the Democratic Party. Their platforms are basically the same and it will be good for our Country to have them both to lead our Country back to its feet. This is also a “History in the Making”…
I will be very proud to tell my granchildren that i have lived in the days when the first African-American and an American-Woman were given this noble responsibilities of leading our Country as President and Vice President.

Comment by Ex Democrat

It never ceases to amaze me how divided the people are - Obama supporters are fierce in defending his record (Bad ‘combination’ with very questionable characters for example - staying in a hate filled church for 20 years, inexperience just to name a few).
The hate for Hillary is also very clear.
Hillary supporters are equally fiery and full of disdain for Obama.

It would be great if we would ALL take the time to think clearly for ourselves WHAT WE WANT IN THE NEXT PRESIDENT and who would listen to the America people needs, who would know what to do if a crisis arise.

Obama may be great in his change speech - but I still have to hear clearly what he will do and how. How will he fund the ‘changes’. Are the taxes going to go up?
Hillary has her own controversies as well and she has Bill. He is a very controversial character to, but for some Bill was a great president
Think how the economy was at the time. He balanced the budget - he handed a prosperous America to Bush (and look where we are after we had an inept in the WH)

So let’s all try to rational about it and do not let the media influence you.
Why would you like Obama as pres?? Because he promise changes? What else do you know about him?
What do you know about Hillary? (I do think she is a very well known quantity).

For me I prefer the devil I know then the one I don’t

Comment by aware

I don’t know why Hillary would want the VP position. McCain will win in 08!

The Democratic Party and the far left media can’t shove Obama down disillusioned Dem’s throats. He is not trustworthy and the Democratic Party has disgaced itself with its rush to give the extreme left, arrogant, elitist candidate with the slippery tongue and the very expensive suits the nomination.

Disillusioned Dem’s will unite to defeat Obama and support McCain the centrist candidate in touch with all Americans! :)

I am wondering why an Arabic-American is standing before us claiming he is the first black man to be a candidate for president? Obamas’ church is filled with hate for our nation and whites. And the DNC wants us to vote for him? So we know there are alot of educated stupid people in America who are lead by a man who has lied from the get go but are we the majority or the minority? Just how many sheep does the DNC have following their golden boy who is no more a black man than I am?

Comment by Ed Every

Obama could do well if he is seen as someone who would be a talented young president who happens to be black. But voters right now are not 100% convinced he actually sees himself that way.

Dianne Feinstein would be a great choice for vice president - Hillary Clinton & Co. would not. Choosing Hillary would signal to voters that Obama is an opportunist, not a solution.

Anyone who expects Obama to do anything any differently from the way politics in Washington is now and has been for decades is deluding themselves - last night’s meeting was only one example. And if Obama had come in a very close second to Clinton, the ranting in the media would be completely different than it is now - and they would be demanding that Obama be put on the ticket.

You know if they had the meeting in the public eye, the healing process would never begin. They has so much tension between them and you can’t talk about that openly. He respected her wishes and met on her terms. They needed to get back on the right foot. And if this is what it takes then more power to them. I’m am very leery of Clinton, can’t quite trust her which is sad to say. I really wouldn’t be surprised if there were a bug somewhere and something doesn’t come out later. Every politician states they take Clinton at her word. I don’t considering she didn’t follow thru on other things she said she would do during the campaign, but I’m not a politcian so this is probably the norm for them. Just be glad they met. Saturday will be the true test. It is all going to depend on how she presents her speech. And if she is DROPPING out of the race. I think at this point she is being forced to, but again don’t know if I trust it. I’ll probably get more answers by watching Obama in the coming days and his demeanor. We’ll see.

Why would Hilary support Obama when the DNC and the super delegates treated her like a nobody, she should not except VP, if offered which I doubt, because Obama is afraid of her superior knowlege of the world, He is so inexperinced, her best bet is to stay in the Senate. Obama thinking that he will change the politics of Washington is a dream, the strong arms of Washinton will make him out as a kindergarter that he really is. That is the reason they came out in support of him, because they know that they will have there way, and he will become a laughing post that he really is Now experince.

Obama used his power to deny our right to vote. There’s nothing more fundamental to the American way of life than the right to vote, and Obama used his power to snuff out that right and silence our voices. He’s not even in office yet, and he has already displayed his willingness to deny the rights of the people to vote in order to gain more power for himself. He’s not a leader; he’s a dictator. Obama threatens our country. He threatens our way of life. If we can’t even vote, what do we have left?

Protect America! Protect our rights! Stand against Obama!

Obama has baggage in the sense of JERIMIAH WRIGHT, TONY REZKO, WILLIAM AYERS AND FATHER PFLAEGER. This baggage is going to go with him to the White House. As a non-American this is so obvious. Please people vote right. There is a saying in the world when America sneezes the world catches a cold. We have had enough of colds. PLEASE VOTE WITH YOUR HEADS AND NOT WITH YOUR HEARTS.

Comment by Maribeth

Obama can’t win if Senator Clinton is not on the ticket. I would advise her not to take the VP slot because he will lose anyway. Also it would be demeaning to her to have to take second place to this guy whose past associations with radical elements cannot and should not be accepted bv the voters in November.

Comment by Rick- Indian Wells, Ca.

The facts are simple. Anyone connected to Bush or the current administration will be wiped out in November. The economy is only getting worse and we Americans, regardless of party affiliation are sick and tired of the insane fear tactics and constant raising of less important social issues to divide us. What about the real issues facing us? Most of us really don’t care about boys kissing- it’s not for me, but who are we to take away someone elses freedom? That’s not the American way. What we really want is REAL homeland security (ports, borders and a strong military to defend us), we want a real energy policy to get us off foreign oil and not have our government filled with the cronies of the Arab royalty! We want quality affordable healthcare and to know social security will be there for us and our children. We need to bring honor and respect back to Washington, even if it means changing our “side”. The world is watching and hoping for the end of this tyranical presidency and policies. McCain has clearly adopted the Bush Doctrine, which is a real shame. I was a HUGE MCCain supporter until he let his values and morals get hijacked by the far right. What about us in the middle?!!!! No matter who Barack selects as VP- Clinton, Jim Webb or Bill Richardson, the GOP can’t stop the Obama-mania that is taking over the country as they get to know him. (and with good reason)

Hillary was not the elected nominee, the people that are Hillary crazy such as on this blog are not very well informed..Hillary better get behind Obama in a big way and ditch the narcissistic and entitled approach she and Bill had to this nomination, she better not mention how many votes she got or the myth that she got more votes and become humble quick….Obama will win the presidency with or without Hillary as vp…it would be hard to vet Bill though in this process and my guess is that will keep them from even being able to consider her….

Hillary’s supporters are smart and they love Hillary so they won’t support Obama who is complete different far left guy and he is a chick.. who hate America. How can he flip flop to say, now I love America and love Israel???

I was raised in a Democratic home, in Manhattan. I went in the Navy in 1967, was antiwar before that and left the Navy hating Richard Nixon. As an adult I gradually became a Republican and again jumped ship to vote for Bill Clinton his first time as President. I again changed parties and went back to the Republicans and Bush. During this time I became a Hillary Clinton HATER, and began to sour on BUSH also. Why bring this up? Well after following the Democratic Primary, I realized that - what started as a amusing entertainment, watching Hillary and Obama chop each other to pieces, became a slow conversion to a Hillary supporter! Everyone who knows me first thought I was pulling their leg, I wasn’t. I came to like her, NOT all her politics or Ideas, but Her and her pluck, and the fact she seems to have a plan. Obama can never have my vote, he HAS NO PLAN, he has glib conversational skills, an Expert Salesman, but not the Right Stuff to run this country, or even Kasastan!
McCain, has plans and I don’t agree with all of them, but he can run the country also.
The Bottom line is, I didn’t like ANYBODY going into this election, and I hated Hillary. I can now VOTE for HER if need be because she has convinced me regardless of her politics she has the guts and stamina to BE PRESIDENT. YOU CAN NOT EVEN IMAGINE HOW INSANE IT IS THAT I ONCE HATED HER SO MUCH AND SHE HAS CHANGED MY MIND. SIGNED A FORMER HILLARY HATER.

Comment by Russ S.

Mo wrote ‘Clinton supporters aren’t stupid. They know that Obama only wanted to count the votes in Fl and Mi after he had the nomination locked up.’

Yes, and Clinton only wanted to count them when she realised she needed them. In the beginning she fully supported not counting them.

There was no good solution to FL and MI. It wasn’t Clinton’s fault, it wasn’t Obama’s fault, and since they were both trying to become president, you can understand why they both tried to craft the siutation to their advantage.

For those who say it was crooked, it wasn’t. The DNC is composed of politicians who want to win. By most measures Clinton was the stronger candidate, so if they were able to corrupt the process they would have chosen her.

Comment by adv

She will be a force to be recognised now and in future, 18 million voters is not a small number.
On VP don’t think so, depends on how campaign unfolds, but she probably will choose a more influential role like Senate majority leader if she gets the backing.

Is anyone else AFRAID? I hope what ever “spell” has been cast on America, I hope it wears off before this man is elected president. He is a completely “manufactured” candidate. Is it a surprise that he is exactly the type of African-American you’d want if you wanted to elect one to the presidency? He is clean-cut, ivy league schooling, a man of the world, very eloquent speaker and the fact that he is only half black sure helps(I know because this is what I hear when people speak of other “articulate” blacks in front of me. As if we all speak ebonics).
The fact that his associations are so far left(and yes it does matter–or is that only when referring to the Clintons?) and that he is clearly clueless(dangerously so) about foreign policy. We can not afford to allow him to learn as he goes. Is it any wonder all these terrorist groups and dictators are supporting/endorsing him? The world could end with one of his slip-ups. Oh, and his brand of government will only set us back to the days of “BIG GOVERNMENT”. Just wait until 40-50% of your salary is going to taxes. PLEASE PEOPLE WAKE UP, VOTE RESPONSIBLY.

I am tired of hearing clinton got the most votes. Votes don’t count, only delagates. Al Gore won the popular vote in 2000, but losed the electorial vote. The system is broke. Get rid of the Super Delegates. Then in the general election do away with winner take all of the electorial votes. Split the votes between the canditates. If one candiate gets 51% of the vote, they get 51% of the electorial vote. This way all states count. As it is now 5 or 6 states can elect the president. That is not right. As it stands now if a candiate get 50.1% of the vote in a state, they get all the electorial votes. 49.9% of the votes don”t count. Count all the votes: under this system they would have to, and each vote would count.
