Hillary Hints At Obama/McCain Iraq Spat

She’s not getting directly involved in the back and forth between Barack Obama and John McCain over whether Obama has been to Iraq enough times - or whether Obama should accompany McCain on a trip there, as the GOP nominee has suggested. But Hillary Clinton reminded crowds in South Dakota today that she’s been to Iraq with McCain — something she used to say often on the trail, but started bringing up again recently only after McCain began questioning Obama’s credibility on Iraq.

“John McCain is a friend of mine. I admire and respect and honor his service to our country. He and I went to Iraq and Afghanistan together,” she said in Watertown. “But he has the wrong ideas for America.”

She also made sure to mention that she’s traveled to Iraq enough to get to know the principles in the war torn country; Obama has been only once. “I’ve been there three times. I’ve met with the leaders of all the factions,” she told the crowd. “They basically have just been willing to stand by and wait, because they thought we would be there for as long as it took.”

Clinton has avoided any direct criticism of Obama since her chance at the nomination all but ended with a big loss in North Carolina. But subtle jabs like this one keep coming — as do claims that she’s more electable against John McCain.

“I believe, with respect to my opponent in the Democratic primary, that he has run an amazing campaign, and deserves our respect and our admiration for doing so and really bringing a lot of people into politics. We both have, and I’m very proud of that,” she said. “But the question is, who is prepared to govern? Who is ready on day one to walk into that oval office and start making the tough decisions?”

“Change doesn’t go just one way. A president can be determined to make change, but you’ve got to get the congress to go along. The congress can be headed off in one direction, but they’ve got to get it past the president.”

Clinton is hoping for at least a close finish — or possibly even a narrow victory — in South Dakota, which the campaign views as more favorable to her than the other June 3rd state of Montana. Clinton has called herself an underdog in the state, but asked voters to deliver another come from behind win.

“A lot of people wanted this election to be over a long time ago, and said, well, let’s just end now. I never figured that out, because I kept winning,” she said to applause. “And every time they said lets end it, I’d come back and win. And you’d think if it were over, that wouldn’t keep happening.

“So today, I lead in the popular vote. I believe it’s important that Montana and South Dakota get to have the last say in this important election,” she continued. “I’m asking you for your consideration. I believe I have the preparation and the experience and the strength and the leadership, and I know you can count on me.”

She’s right…at least about her traveling to Iraq and about Senator McCain’s great service to our country. At least she put herself out there to go take a look at what is going on…has she been since the surge? She should answer whether we are making progress…

Comment by Loyd in Cerritos

What difference does it make if she wins SD? They only have what 8 or 9 delegates? She’s doing this to bloody up Obama. She wants him to lose because ‘12 will be her last chance!

McCain is right on this one. Requirement should be that B. Hussain Obama go to Iraq WITH McCain. Then return home and Debate the Issue from first hand knowledge on a level playing field.

Does Hillary want Obama to build a “Dukakis in a tank moment” by going to Iraq with McCain?

Comment by JOE SONDERS

Speaking about Iraq at a townhall event on Thursday evening in Greensdale, Wisconsin, Sen. John McCain declared, “I can tell you that it is succeeding. I can look you in the eye and tell you it’s succeeding. We have drawn down to pre-surge levels. Basra, Mosul and now Sadr city are quiet and it’s long and it’s hard and it’s tough and there will be setbacks…” (Video is below.)

McCain was wrong on two points. First, U.S. forces have not returned to pre-surge levels. Before the surge, there were 130,000 troops in Iraq; even if the scheduled troop reductions are carried out as planned, there will still be 140,000 troops in Iraq in August.

Moreover, McCain’s claim that Mosul is “quiet” was disproved earlier today in grim fashion. Three suicide bombings — two in Mosul and another in a surrounding town — left 30 Iraqis dead and more than two dozen injured, according to press reports.

Clearly, McCain’s various congressional trips to Iraq haven’t made him infallible on the issue.

Amazing how the media doesn’t credit Clinton for having been more engaged and versed in the IRAQ situation. She not only has visited Iraq but she has visited 80 countries. Obama has never even been to Europe. How is it that the media doesn’t find this candidate lacking??? Hillary is clearly better able to go up against McCain on every front. (NOW OBAMA’S RACIST CHURCH AND SHADY PAST IS REVEALING ITSELF)The USA is heading for another lost opportunity to chose a good president if Hillary isn’t the nominee. I think she should run as an Independent. ANYTHING JUST WIN HILLARY!!!

Comment by knoon

The Superdelegates should have been allowed to vote by private ballot. The parade of Superdelegates to Obama has likely been made up of politicians who chose to overlook their best judgment on who is the stronger candidate in November in favor of pleasing the frontrunner. As usual the DNC has shot itself in the foot.

IF HILLARY JOINS UP WITH OBAMA AT THE DEM CONVENTION — IT AIN’T GONNA MAKE HER FOLLOWERS VERY HAPPY, THIS ONE WILL CHANGE TO AN INDEPENDENT AND WILL BE VOTING FOR JOHN McCAIN

Comment by bonnie

she is 100 % right.

Obama will never go to Iraq again. It is to dangrous for him. He is also afraid that he will find that the surge is working and will have to go back to the far far left voters and either lie or lose their votes.

Obambi was busy running for PoTUS as soon as he got to the Senate. So, didn’t have time. Why learn about issues?

Great oratory and rhetoric will do.

Hillary should be the winner, but as most of us learn early on, life sometimes isn’t fair. I don’t believe she was ‘entitled’, as some have put it; I believe she’s EARNED it.

Oh please get off it Hillary. You are grasping at straws now. You change the game plan every time things don’t go your way. You are damaging the Democrats by just trying to hang on with every last thread. What’s next? If things don’t go the way you want them do you do even more damage and down Obama? How will you say you endorse him with a straight face after all the things you have said about him? You will be the one looking foolish trying to make someone believe you after you wanted him assinated so you could win. Look in you soul and let everyone know your true feelings, believe me I do, I know how you feel. I think you destroyed your credibility with a lot of people on how you react to certain things and how your body language changes when you talk about Obama. To me you feel like you look down on him. Give credit where credit is due. It was your doing and not Obama that caused your downfall.

Comment by Don Hannaford

McCain and Clinton wouldn’t be visiting Iraq if they had the common sense to vote against this unjust and expensive war!!!

Comment by Skeets

Hillary, our BEST canidate.
YES SHE CAN.

The end seems to be at hand. I can’t understand why Hillary can’t understand it’s over. It’s over and she need to accept it and move on.

Comment by Priscilla for Obama

Whether Obama travels to Iraq or not is irrelevant. Obama will end the war and the Iraqi government will have to take responsibility for their own country. It’s time for our government to turn their attention to home and help their own for a change. America’s economy is suffering and we need CHANGE.

Go Obama - President - Yes We Can!!!

I HOPE OBAMA DOES NOT GO TO IRAQ. HE DOESN’T NEED TO!

Comment by seah

Obama should go to Iraq,

I see after McCain gave the offer, his camp said he was thinking of it.

I think he is spineless and afraid to take McCain up on his offer.

Comment by Dem in CA

The reason McCain does not critizice Hillary on her experience and preparation to lead us out of the war in Iraq - is because she is best and brightest to lead our country out of this mess. Obama does not have the knowledge of information to have any credible judgement on the issue.
DNC fix this mess and super delegates - make sure that Hillary is our next president. The country needs her.

OBOMA, WANT GO……
NOT THAT CRYBABY…….
HE IS LIKE EDWARDS, KERRY, TEDDY, RICHARDS…
THEY HAVE TO BE PAID TO BREATH…..
ALL CROOKS UNDER THE SAME ROOF…….
THEY CAN NOT STAND THE THOUGHT THAT A WOMAN COULD WIN THE PRES. RACE AND THEY COULD NOT…..
SO THEY SOLD OUT AMERICA, FOR PAY OFFS FROM OBOMA,
PLUS THE GENDER THING…

Why Hillary supporters are angry

For an analysis of why Hillary supporters are angry, we recommend “Hating Hillary” by Andrew Stephen in The New Statesman. Part of this article describes Obama’s partnership with the media to promote his candidacy and to slander Hillary. One recent attack occurred as a result of her interview on Friday, May 23, in South Dakota, in which she talked about primaries that went into June, with one example being the year of the RFK assassination. The Obama campaign immediately fired off a press release stating that Senator Clinton’s statement was unfortunate and had no place in this campaign. Along with others, Keith Olbermann of MSNBC and Mark Shields of the NewsHour responded with their attacks on Hillary. On the morning of May 24, the Obama campaign sent a transcript of Olbermann’s attack on Senator Clinton to reporters, so that there would be further hype. We have not seen any apologies from the media. And Obama behaves as if it were nothing and “excuses” Hillary. Shameless!

Comment by JOHN EGBUNIWE

The issue of a joint or single trip to Iraq, sounded absurd. The troops need all USA and free thinking people’s support, BUT why a visit or non visit should matter so much shows the dishonesty behind politics. These brave men and women out there in Iraq would not have been there in the first place looking for the elusive WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION - something(s) that so far have not been found because they were not there in the first place.

McCAin should be honest and acknowledge that he made a mistake by supporting the war. Mrs Clinton should stop being foolish. She is a friend of McCain’s, she’s been with McCain to Iraq, she supported or voted for the war, now she doesn’t and now subtly - which has never been her forte, she is claiming the moral high ground on IRAQ. Being montrous and racist/sexist/ageist and dishonest does not make a good president.

Hillary leads in the popular vote???

ONLY if you don’t count a single caucus vote, and you give her full credit for FL (where Obama never campaigned) AND Michigan (where every Democrat but her honored their pledge to remove their names from the ballot).

This is the ULTIMATE in shifting the goalposts. She should be ashamed. The question is– are the American people smart enough to see it? Hillary (& Bill), GWB, and most Washington insiders believe the American people will swallow any lie or exaggeration, if you say it loud enough. Please please God tell me they’re wrong….

There is absolutely no way that Obama will be elected. The list of people that he surrounds himself with, some of the causes that he has worked on (one that is as devicive as anything can be), and his militant “hostile” takeover of his Senate seat as well as at least one other office that the was “elected” to. A black man and a black women, both in their own rights significant for the real work that they had done to further their states causes. If you talk to these two people they would tell you he walked into office by default. What we saw today was a play right out of the play book that he has used in the past. He took his name off of the MI ballot for a reason. I’ve said that all along. And now, to get a glimpse into why he would do that, it makes real sense. Hillary was lured into the FL/MI agreement. So your choices people are a less than honorable man, some would call a swindler, or a woman who because of her tireless work over the years to build the relationships she had, contributing not only her money but her time to all people regardless of race, religion, age………..whatever…………..who has been sufficiently rendered a bafoon who lost at her own game. So it’s down to a liar and a theif or one step behind.

The FACT is, if the situation were reversed, and Clinton took her name off the ballot on a primary that was never supposed to count, and they refused to give her anything and actually COUNT the primary… You Clinton supporters would be LIVID. I can hear the screams of sexism and suppression of votes for a female candidate.

If you are going to count Michigan you need to give Obama something… Otherwise you can’t count Michigan.

If this truly IS a venture to “count every vote” and not a mission to help get Clinton more votes and delegates, then you wouldn’t say that the 45% of Michigan’s citizens that couldn’t vote for Obama should be ignored.

Harold Ickes, the man who is now almost screaming that the decision of the committee was unfair to Hillary, the man who says that it is undemocratic to punish Michigan, is actually ON the committee and voted to strip them of ALL their delegates when the decision was originally made… Why the change of heart? Because he didn’t think the decision would hurt HIS candidate, there is nothing altruistic about getting Michigan seated AS IS, it is ALL about helping Clinton.

Ickes also said STRONGLY to Tim Russert many many months ago, that this isn’t a race for popular vote, or states, this is a race for DELEGATES.

Or I guess it WAS a race for delegates, until it was clear HIS candidate couldn’t win those.

We have the delegate system for a GOOD reason, the same as the electoral system. It is so every county in the country gets a say, even if the are a small rural area, if they went by popular vote only, then the candidates would only campaign in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston, Boston…

The delegate numbers are based on the proportion of their total population.

Going by popular vote also gives an advantage to states that vote late in the game, because even states Obama won by a LOT back in February, voted before this race became really really hot, so they didn’t show up in the record numbers we see now.

Delegates, not total popular vote determine the nominee.

Going by popular vote is only a good idea if you aren’t educated as to the reason they aren’t the metric.

Obama will win the nomination, and will win in November. I base that on POLLING and the atmosphere of the country, not my gut feeling and my emotions, which is what the Clinton supporters are going by to say that McCain will win.

Also, you DO realize that the Republicans stripped Michigan and Florida of half their delegates too… Why aren’t you all appalled that they are undemocratic communists?

Comment by EJ

paul, get your facts straight. You sound like a second grader. In the first place NO CANDIDATE signed anything about taking their names off the ballots. That’s BS and you know it. As far as the caucuses go, they do not count the popular vote. That’s the way they have ALWAYS done it. I don’t think we should even have caucuses, they should be illegal. The purpose of having a SECRET ballot is for it to be SECRET. The caucus is more like the convention and should not be allowed. FACE IT BUDDY, HILLARY CLINTON WON THE POPULAR - GOT IT???????

IT”S ABOUT TIME! For Hillary to get out of the race she is not the niomnee, so she need to go.
She have cause enough trouble since she been in the race. THat minister had it right about Hillary, she do think because, she is bill wife and, she is white, and had beeen through this before she feel like she is more qualitifed. Well I’m here to tell you, that not what makes you qualitifed, what make you acredited is just what Obama give you at the beginning of the race and, that is no negative feedback on who’s ready and, who’s not but, instead he continue to focus on what lying ahead to win this race between him and Clinton. You see Hillary you was looking in a straight direction, when Obama was staying focus and observing his material in a positive matter. If you ever run for president again Hillary one thing you should have learn is that you not in the race to compete who you think is ready or not but, you are in to do your job intil you get the crown and then you offer Obama to have a place in the vice president seat. Noooo! But you want to think you have together and now you are being apointed to the seat of a vice president or, you could act foolish and stay as a Senator.
GOOD LUCK!

I wish Obama supporters would stop making fun of Clinton supporters. As one myself, I’m always ambushed with the fact that if I don’t want to vote for Obama, then I’m either an uneducated racist, or an uneducated Appalachian. As a Clinton supporter, I don’t understand that the Obama campaign seems to be naive in the fact that believe it or not, he needs our support to win in the fall. George Bush only beat John Kerry in the popular vote in the General Election by 3 million people, and if the polls actually hold up, that potential 3 million people in the fall could be Hillary supporters that have been alienated from Obama by his supporters. I’m not saying the polls will hold up, because obviously a lot of liberal democrats are not going to vote for McCain, but if his supporters don’t stop making fun of us, there could be a real possibility that we could vote for McCain or just stay home. He just assumes that like little children that all of us will fall in line and vote democratic. In the last election, 11 percent of registered democrats voted for George Bush, so if that happens again, if not more, he might struggle a little bit. I would just hope that in the future, he would do more to reach out to Clinton supporters.

“WHO MAKES THE RULES??” THE REPUBLICANS!!

The Republicans KNEW all along Hillary would be their strongest adversary in the fall, that’s why the Republican legislators in Florida voted to have their primaries early. ALOT of the Republican controlled media continues bashing Hillary, like saying she should bow out!!
Why? Because she should follow the DNC “RULES!”
THE ONLY “RULE” PEOPLE FORGET IS THE SUPREME COURT AND CONSTITUTION HAVE STATED
ALL US CITIZENS HAVE A RIGHT TO HAVE THEIR VOTES COUNT!!!
WHO DO THE DNC PEOPLE THINK THEY ARE,GOD????
Hillary won Florida FAIR AND SQUARE,and Sneaky Obama took his name off the Michigan ballot, because he knew by the polls he would lose!!!!!!!

The only states Obama won, were “Red” Republican states,( they WANTED HIM TO WIN WITH THEIR “OPEN’ PRIMARIES),states like Colorado,Wyoming,Utah, etc. Those RED states will betray
him in the fall GUARANTEED!! And no way will he win big states like Texas,Ohio,Florida..
He’ll be lucky to win Pa., New York, and California also, because if you check the polls,
Hillary supporters WILL NOT vote for him in the fall!!!
Besides, John McKain is THE BEST Republican in A VERY LONG TIME,being a war hero!!

Gee,I guess the Republicans will concede Illinois,Obama’s home state!!
David F.
Pittsburgh

Gee,I guess the Republicans will have to concede Illinois, about the only state he’ll win!!!
GUARANTEED he will NOT win those states in the fall, and DEFINATELY will not win the BIG states Hillary won like Ohio, Texas, etc. He might not even win Pa.,Calif.,or new York, because if you check the polls,

Comment by David F.

Who make up the “rules?” THE REPUBLICANS!!

I like how ALOT of people, including the Republican controlled media, say Hillary doesn’t have a chance.
I also like how ALOT of people say she should abide by the “RULES” of the DNC, and not have Florida
or Michigan count. I also like the fact the Republican legislature in Florida set the day of the primary there,
knowing by the polls Hillary would win,but it wouldn’t count! I also like how sneeky Obama also knew he wouldn’t win Michigan, and took his name off the ballot!!
THE ONLY “RULES” THAT ACTUALLY COUNT ARE THE CONSTITUTION AND SUPREME COURT WHO HAVE STATED EVERY CITIZEN IN THE USA HAS A RIGHT TO HAVE THEIR VOTE COUNTED!!!
WHO DOES THE DNC THINK THEY ARE,GOD???????????
IT IS THE REPUBLICANS WHO WANTED HILLARY OUT,BECAUSE THEY KNOW SHE’S THE STRONGER CANDIDATE TO BEAT MCKAIN!!
Also, If you like the war, then you vote for Mckain or Obama. Obama said he would attack Pakistan, which
is about inexperienced as one can get!!!
David F.
Pittsburgh

PS. IF OBAMA GETS THE NOMINATION,WATCH ALL THE REPUBLICAN “RED STATES” OBAMA WON,LIGHT UP FOR MCKAIN!! AND THEIR AIN’T NO WAY HE’LL WIN THE BIG STATES HE LOST TO HILLARY LIKE OHIO,TEXAS,FLORIDA,ETC.!!!!
GEE,I GUESS THE RUBLICANS WILL CONCEDE OBAMINATION’S HOME STATE OF ILLINOIS!!!

It makes me sad to realize how crooked this voting year has been. –bullying at caucauses, removing names from the ballot to ensure some kind of a brokered deal by DNC, racist preachers, unpatriotic comments, bullying by the media and DNC, black liberation influence,Brazille and others threatening people and calling them cheaters for wanting their vote counted–and the list goes on…for me, the democratic party is now a farce! McCain is not that much different than Hillary as he is a moderate with a mind of his own-like me. Please, please, people–do not vote for a man with a questionable reputation–go McCain if Hillary does not win! Very concerned citizen

The Democrats are denying one of their own, a person who has worked tirelessly for her country for years and deserves the nomination more than any other person, YES has robed the nomination from Hillary Clinton by refusing to let each and every citizen’s vote COUNT! That is NOT the way a true democracy works! If they will do that to one of their own in front of the world — what other rights are they planning to take away from the rest of us IF their ‘chosen far left puppit’ gets into office???

Republicans, Democrats and Independents are binding together from various movements now seen taking root.

The Republicans were swept away by an anybody-but-Obama frenzy since Reverend Wright first became a household name. The Democrats have been involved with Operation Turn Down.

We are now coalescing around a No Obama! theme.

No Obama Nation!

No Obama!
