Clinton Reflects on Long Campaign As Contest Enters Final Week

Hillary Clinton visited the back of her press plane for the first time in weeks after a campaign stop in Rapid City, SD, waxing reflective about the 16-month primary campaign that’s now nearing an end.

“I feel so good about the process, you know? I feel like this has been a really positive, productive primary season in so many ways,” she said. “Maybe we can make it more sensible, but given the rules that we had I feel really good about going through the weekend.”

“We’ll see what the Rules and Bylaws Committee does with Michigan and Florida we’ll see what happens in Puerto Rico, Montana and South Dakota and then we’ll see where we are,” she continued. The Rules Committee meets in Washington on Saturday to determine how to seat the delegates from Florida and Michigan. The Clinton campaign has said it wants all the delegates and superdelegates seated based on the January election results, but has signaled a willingness to compromise.

Clinton also said she feels a sense of accomplishment as the primaries wind down. “I have really enjoyed the process of being able to go out and see this country anew ,” she said. “I did it in an abrivitated way in ’92 but I’ve done it in a much more thorough and comprehensive way, as you have known because you have been with me so much of the time.”

“This is a great, resilient, resourceful country that has been badly led, but the capacitites are all there. We just have to unleash them again.”

Sticking it out to the very end is a clear source of pride for the New York Senator - who has faced daunting delegate math for months. “I feel good because so many people react to my having stayed in. People have been trying to get me out since January, basically, and you know I just wasn’t going anywhere,” she said. “I feel good about that because that’s a reflection of a lot of peoples experience in life.”

“One woman grabbed my hand said ‘I coach basketball you don’t walk off the court until the game is over.’ And people understand that. So I feel really good about all of this. Obviously we’re all exhausted but that goes with the territory.”

Clinton said she’d received a positive response to her memo to superdelegates explaining her case for the nomination — but only once she got back from the South Dakota hinterlands. “We were out of cellphone and black berry range, maybe you weren’t but I was,” she said to one reporter. “We got some [reaction] when we got to Rapid City, we got some good feedback. You know, a lot of people didn’t know what was in it which is obviously why we sent it, because I think there’s some good information in it.”

She also dished on her Mount Rushmore trip earlier in the day, saying she’d added it to her schedule at the last minute because she didn’t want the press corps to miss such an iconic monument. “I though it was extremely cool,” she said. “I was just looking out for you.”

As for the extra sleep she and her traveling press missed out on? “Oh come on, you’re in for a dime you’re in for a dollar. You’re a trooper, you’ve been on this adventure every step of the way, what’s another early morning to go to Mount Rushmore?” she said to one young reporter who’s followed her regularly since November.

“You know I had been there before you were born. I did a lot of things before you were born, thank God you weren’t around or I wouldn’t have enjoyed any of it.”

Next stop after South Dakota: a return trip to Puerto Rico — a prospect the Senator from New York seemed excited about. “Yeah, Puerto Rico was fun wasn’t it fun? ” she said of her trip over Memorial Day weekend. “We’re going back yeah, more dancing, more beaches.”

I am sorry, but I don’t think Poor Hillary has a chance to win. It had been decided by the DNC the day Obama stated he was running. Even in states she has the most voted, the delegates went for Obama. They are also counting the votes for Obama to make sure, If Fl and Mi are counted, it will make him the winner. I can’t see why they are doing this. If Hillary won this time, it wouldn’t hurt them to try to make sure Obama is what he says he is. This is scary for America. Have any of you saw his mother anywhere? Seems he has disowned her. Your mom is always you mom, And I don’t care what your nationality, EVERYONE Should be PROUD of it no matter what. He has both his mom’s and Dad’s blood and he should be proud. And with everything America has given him he should be PROUD of America. Goodness he has more than a lot of us will ever have.

Nancy Pelosi was for Obama from the beginning. I hope she is happy when the Democrats lose the general election because no one knows who or what Obama is. Thank you Kennedy, Kerry, Dean and Pelosi for letting me know how your party works so underhanded. To think I was a Democrat for 40 years, what a waste, to know that the public don’t have a say on who the President nominee will be. My vote will go Republican.

Comment by Ali

It’s been so fun for her to divide the party. Your right Hillary, there’s a process in getting people against one another in the DNC. There’s a process in trying to undermine rules set forth and change them in the middle of the game. You’ve just had a blast and exausted yourself huh.
You know you can’t win unless you cheat. That’s a process you will fight for until the bitter end. WE KNOW THIS MUCH IS TRUE!

Comment by Hillary Pride

Hillary is misunderstood and judged by people’s perceptions, rather than allowing themselves to have an open mind and see the real her. No matter what the outcome of this election, Hillary stood strong, proved she is a fighter, and I (one of millions of her supporters) loved getting to see her in her real element…. fighting for what she believes in. I’m proud of her, proud that I supported her, and proud that because of her, for the first time in recent history we American’s who call ourselves Democrats, got to see the process played out the way it was meant to be… with every American feeling they were part of selecting the party Nominee. There is not another candidate that was strong enough to stand up and fight for America even when everyone else was telling her that it was over. History will speak for itself and she will be remembered as the strongest candidate in this race.

It is amazing how this forerunner, veteran politician has totally blown this nomination. She underestimated the power of her opponent. She did not stay consistent to the issues of her campaign. She did not use the power of the internet. She let her husband speak too much. She kept a liitle girl’s money. I have followed this campaign and I am dumbfounded at her arrogance. She actually thoght the public would vote for her without any forethought. She did not have resources after Super Teusday because she did not think she needed anything. If Senator Obama would be in her place, the media would have laughed him out of this race. I am ready for this to be over. Let us unite and will the general election.

Comment by GoldenChica

I’m glad to hear the superdelegates gave her a positive response to her memo why she’s the best candidate for the nomination. I hope they make the right choice and nominate her for the presidency. Obama can comeback in 2012 and try again. Right now it’s not the time for his candidacy. There’s too much at stake to have someone like him lead this country.

Good job President Hillary!!!

Hillary won Kentucky and West Virginia by a landslide in spite of overspending in ads 3 to 1 by Obama against Hillary. Same thing that happened in Indiana and Pennsylvannia. Obama is expected to win both Indiana and North Carolina since February. But, Hillary won Indiana and cut Obama’s lead in North Carolina from 20% in February down to 14% in spite of ad overspending by Obama.

Wake up media people or wake up superdelegates. Hillary even won consecutively in Ohio, Texas (Obama lost even he was endorsed by the Traitor Bill Richardson), and Pennsylvannia. Not to mention the other big states such as California (Obama lost in California even though Oprah, Maria Shriver, and Katherine Kennedy endorsed him), Massachusetts (Obama lost Massachusetts even though Kennedy and John Kerry endorsed him), Arkansas, New Hampshire, New Jersey and Florida (both of them are in the ballot) that are crucial in November. Hillary has the most electoral college votes based in these big states.

If you want a Democrat to win then Hillary should be the choice. HILLARY WON THE BIG STATES AND THE SWING STATES. If Hilalry is not the nominee, we will vote for McCain. African Americans are so unfair voting 9 to1 against Hillary not like the white people who fair and thinks who is the best candidate. Who is being racial now? This racial thing about Black has been OVERUSED, MISUSED and ABUSED by these people. Obama, the Obama camp, Clyburn, Wright and others can not fool us anymore. Stop this non-sense.

Wake up superdelegates! Wake up media people.

This is the first time after 19 years that I had the right to vote that I participate in the primary season from the beginning to the end. And I’m proud of my candidate of choice Sen. Clinton. I chose her last year in November after I throughly studied her policy. The way her hold herself with grace during the course of this campaign, the way she reach out to every voters at every corner of the country confirms my conviction that she the true leader and the best candidate for the president.

I and 17 million people who voted for Sen. Clinton say we want her to make her case at the convention. And nobody, MSM pundit or the big boss in DNC, has the right to stand in her way.

Saturday will be a bad day for feminism — I feel sorry for the next woman who runs for national office–everyone will be so sour on women candidates after Hillary. She is belittling her candidacy by whining, crying faux foul on sexism, boo hooing her way to sympathy votes, even throwing the Democratic Party under the proverbial bus. I just hope they don’t appear to be a rabid mob. As a woman, and feminist, I am embarrassed by Hillary and her followers–they should be ashamed that they aren’t able to lose with grace.

Comment by Rpiller

The facts are as such.

1) Clinton was supposed to blow everyone out of the water and win. When you know that’s how it’s supposed to be and you know everyone else knows, it’s embarrassing when it doesn’t happen, and you get angry, bitter, sad, etc.

2) Because of number 1 above, Clinton pulls out all the stops when she starts losing. Everything was fair. She agreed to everything up front. When things didn’t start to go her way, she backtracked, period. She can scream every vote should count now, and if Obama didn’t think he won already, he would be making a good point to show how every vote didn’t count to Hillary until she needed them.

3) Because Hillary let this thing go on so long, there is a ton of bad blood on both sides. Clinton voters will vote McCain if Obama wins and Obama voters probably won’t show up at all if Hillary wins. The “fighter” picture she painted for herself has killed the Dems. She is making damn sure the dems won’t win this election, because it wasn’t handed to her like I’m sure she was hearing for years now. It’s revenge, pure and simple.

One who leads with hope gets the educated, one who leads with fear get the uneducated. It’s that simple. The fact is there are more uneducated than educated, so fear wins, sadly.

I like Obama, but don’t think he’s a god. He’s a politician who I should question every step of the way just like any other politician. Remember, politicians work for you, not the other way around. Stop worshiping the ground these people walk on. It only hurts the system by doing so.

People are probably tired of trying to blog, and their reasonable comments are not posted.

I’ll try this time.

Regarding this statement: “One woman grabbed my hand said ‘I coach basketball you don’t walk off the court until the game is over.’ And people understand that.

That analogy is so true when you are in competition with an opposing team, i.e. Democrats vs Republicans. However, when you and your opponent are on the same Democratic team, then the coach has to remove the player who is playing in such a way that they may cause the whole team to lose.

Wonderful news–she received good responses to her letter to the superDs. She is by far the more experienced and more electable candidate. If the superDs don’t see that, they must be blind. Hillary has the number behind her, and no amount of nattering by the other side can change that.

================================================================

The most qualified? Let’s see, the only noteworthy accomplishment of Hillary Clinton was her vote for the war in Iraq. And why is she concerned with superdelagates when she’s now saying it’s the popular vote that should count? Hillary’s greatest strengths are mis-remembering, mis-speaking, pandering, and lying, not necessarily in that order. You must be one of those radical Hillary fundamentalists that think Hillary is the stronger candidate because Karl Rove says so… fools!

Time for Change - Obama didn’t invite the media when he made his “famous” speech in San Francisco about the middle class people that got him into so much hot water. What’s the difference in that and what McCain did? NONE - I get so angry when I think of all the things that Senator Clinton and Senator McCain have had the media make so much hullabaloo about when BHO has done the EXACT same thing and it’s okay. That’s the only reason I’m glad this is coming to an end, which may not be until the convention, is that at least there won’t be any reason for bias like we’ve had to put up with the last 16 months. I can guarantee they won’t let up on Senator Clinton any more than they’ve let up on Bill Clinton for the last 8 years. They are intimidated by the Clinton’s because they are truly Americans who care about the American people and Barack HUSSEIN Obama cares only about himself and his Muslim friends. NEVER< NEVER, Obama, I’d vote for a rattlesnake first.
