Will Puerto Rico Determine the Dem Nominee?

On June 1st, Puerto Rico will hold its primary, the third to last contest of this long and drawn out Democratic race. Barack Obama spent the day campaigning in the territory, hoping to reap some of its 55 pledged delegates up for grabs next Sunday.

Obama is likely to secure his party’s nomination and he is already campaigning as though he is the presumptive nominee by holding events in general election states and taking on Senator McCain more than Senator Clinton. And today in Old San Juan, Obama told several thousand he thought this race might come to an end sooner rather than later should do well in the island’s primary.

But later on a four and a half hour flight from San Juan to Chicago, Obama clarified his comment to reporters. “What I mean was, you know we have three more contests and if we do well in those next three contests, then we should be in a position hopefully to say that we’ve won this nomination.” He also observed that while he expects to do well in Puerto Rico’s primary, “I’m not as well known as Senator Clinton on the island.”

Following his several brief rally in Old San Juan, Obama walked in a traditional candidate’s parade called a camitana, greeting supporters and onlookers lined along the street. As Obama-themed salsa music blared, Obama occasionally showed the crowd some of his moves. Check it out here:

No.

The Rezco verdict will determine the nomination.

Hillary Clinton is hanging around for a reason. The Clintons may know something not many of the american know yet. I still feel the nomination is going to the convention and a floor fight will determine the nominee. Hillary has been running for president the day she left the white house. The Clintons have a surprise in store for Obama and I am not sure it is just about Rezco. That may be part of it but I am still thinking there is something else. Hillary and Bill add over 12 million of their own money very late in the campaign coinciding with all the calls to get out of the race. Something very strange about that. As a reluctant Mccain supporter I feel the presidency is being handed to him on a silver platter. The RNC should send a big thank you to that idiot Howard Dean who single handedly took apart the democratic party. The damage to the democrats will be felt for years to come by his actions.

The DNC had their nominee picked before Obama ever put his name in the hat. The fix has been in all along.

I’m not so sure about that. I think the fix was in with Soros and company, but not the formal DNC.

How do the Clinton’s not get tarred for pardoning two members of the weather underground in jail partly for bombs that ended lives of three people including a policeman.

Why does Hillary get away with running as a coronation, having all of the institutional support, having most governors and mayors, and a very well-liked president behind her and yet is now a victim of the press and Obama supporters when they see a bungled candidate and campaign?

Why is she not called to task for not pointing out for RFK and for Cill Clinton, the primary calendar started much later with the California primary occurring in June. The primary calendar has moved up radically, and we had Super Tuesday, and she has to look at a situation in the past when there were 2-3 states left to vote as a parallel.

Obama does not have a good advocate.

I wonder sometimes how much we really know about the power levers in play behind the scenes. People are so involved and giving their views, but a few connections to the media and industry and power brokers, and maybe none of us is all the wiser.

You hate being a sheep.

If the Republicans were not so strongly social conservatives, they would be very attractive to many people, especially if they were about rolling up their sleeves and fixing all the problems. I am not sure why Democrats have taken over this role. I am voting for a Democrat because he is closer to the Republican I favor.

Perhaps if the MSM did not continuously portray Republicans as the villain more people would be attracted.

Look, the Republicans have not been doing themselves any favors lately. The hogs on the Hill have been grabbing as much slop from trough as the Dems have.

But the press has been vilifying conservatives for nearly two generations. Even their own internal industry polls put the number of conservative journalists at 10% or less. The bias is blatant and grotesque.

You need to understand that Hillary Clinton and the arrogance she has is because she has been running for president for 8 years as I said earlier. This was hers and now she sees it slipping away. Ther is no excuse for the media waying in on the weather underground and the pardons Bill gave out. The media was always soft on the Clintons but now she cries foul. Obama has become the darling of the media and she has a hard time accepting it. Personally I think they have been too soft on both Clinton and Obama. The media should bring up the pardons and they could start with Mark Rich. As far as Obama goes lets really get into Rezco and company and I am sure there is much there. But I wouldn’t hold my breath on that topic getting any air time.

Comment by Andylit

If Rezco is found guilty, the media will be falling all over themselves to get that story. Enough of them allow the spotlight to trump politics that it will be out there.

The Banshee will use it as a sword of Damocles hanging over BO’s head. She will lobby the SD’s like there is no tomorrow, trying to convince them that Rezco is a live grenade.

Comment by TRUTH-BE-KNOWN

As a state senator, Barack Obama wrote letters to city and state officials supporting his political patron Tony Rezko’s successful bid to get more than $14 million from taxpayers to build apartments for senior citizens.

The deal included $855,000 in development fees for Rezko and his partner, Allison S. Davis, Obama’s former boss, according to records from the project, which was four blocks outside Obama’s state Senate district.

I’m glad Puerto Rico is getting some recognition. Although I’m a Republican, this Democratic contest will hopefully let other become more aware of this Territory’s contribution to the U.S. I would hope this will become the 51st state if it is the will of the citizens of Puerto Rico. Perhaps we will see a lot more discussion of this topic as June 1st approaches, and I am interested in seeing how the candidates feel about this topic.

My recollection is that all polls over the years have a plurality wishing to keep the current status. 2nd place is statehood with a distant 3rd for independence.

I haven’t seen any new polls on this for a few years.

It constantly amazes me that bloggers think they know “Clinton.”

You dump Hillary Clinton in the same pot as Bill….Senator Clinton did NOT make Policy in the White House, Bill Clinton did. It is quite humorous that you justify Obama’s ties to Ayers by saying President Clinton pardoned two members of the Weathermen. That is an Obama tactic….don’t question me too closely, otherwise I will accuse you of something worse! That is politics “Chicago Style.”

I am for Senator Clinton. I used to hate her…I’m embarrassed to say it was because I did not have any respect for her husband, and I judged her for not divorcing him.

But then, I remembered a saying…”contempt prior to investigation.” So I started researching what she has done in her life. Not just what the haters say about her. The danger is believing what you read, and this particular election shows the media bias…which is sad because journalism used to be a very high calling.
Now Fish Wrapper News would be a more appropriate term.

Senator Clinton has many firsts in her career…First member of her family to go to college, first woman to become partner in the Rose Law firm, First attorney to advocate on behalf of the poor, First “First Lady” to be given assignments by the President of the United States, First woman to be in charge of Universal Health Care, First “First Lady” to run for State Senate, and win! Showed up at Ground Zero the day after 9/11. Served on the Senate Arms Committee. Wrote two books, and one, “It Takes a Village to Raise a Child” ALL proceeds go to charity.

If I were Senator Clinton, as a senator from New York…I would NEVER apologize for voting for the resolution to use force. Only the people from New York know how very devastating 9/11 was…and at the time, 80% of the country approved of Bush. No one expected President Bush might have his own agenda, and to say you should have known 8 years later, is simply hindsight. You learn from your mistakes and move on….

Sorry this is so long, but this Primary Election has made me ashamed of the media, at how another candidate can twist words to his own benefit, and pretend to be on the high ground. I cannot vote for Obama…I have researched him…and he has dodged too many questions…and twisted too many words…
my vote won’t matter to anyone but me…and with me…it is a matter of principle. Of course, simply because I think Obama is the slickest liar I have ever seen, I will be labeled a “racist” by Obama supporters, but that simply is not the case. I have done my homework…and Obama is the worst of the three…

Besides you sounding totally irrational you need to think about a few things that happened in New Orleans. First of all the people were given ample notice to leave days in advance. When that didn’t happen please explain to me why over 1000 buses ended up under water when they were supposed to be used to transport people out of New Orleans? I do remember the mayor and the governor both democrats proved inept in their response. At least the governor had the dignity not to run for re election. But the mayor a black american still won reelection from the same constituents that he failed. But all you hear is it was Bush’s fault. People like you that sound racist to the core is what is wrong with America. For whatever reason it is blame white people. We are a country of all Americans regardless of the color of your skin.
