Obama Campaigns in Puerto Rico

With 55 pledged delegates at stake June 1, Barack Obama campaigned in the U.S. territory today, where he held a town hall with Puerto Rican veterans in Bayamon. There are 150,000 veterans in Puerto Rico - 35 have died in the war in Iraq.

When one of the assembled vets noted they don’t have a voice in Washington, Obama responded, “We don’t want to get too political here on the issues that are obviously so controversial here in Puerto Rico, but what I will say is that I am absolutely committed to making sure that Puerto Rico has the right to make a decision and to have self determination when it comes to its status, and making decisions about how they’re interacting with Congress and the President of the United States. In the meantime, I will make sure that you are represented in these issues.”

Later, he will lead a caminata - a traditional march - through the streets of Old San Juan.

Read Obama’s prepared remarks after the jump.

It’s fitting to be here today – not just because Memorial Day is around the corner, but because Puerto Ricans are such an important part of the United States military. On this island and in Puerto Rican neighborhoods across America, you can go into almost any home and find a veteran living there – or a photograph of a loved one in uniform hanging on the wall.

It reflects a tradition of service and sacrifice that’s run through our history from the very beginning – ever since Puerto Ricans fought with Boston militiamen to defeat the British Empire. It was the 65th Infantry – the Borinqueneers – that fought with my grandfather to free a continent from fascism and whose valor in Korea led MacArthur to say he wished he had more troops like them. And today, it is this island that’s sending more of its sons and daughters to serve in Iraq and Afghanistan than nearly anyplace else in our nation.

Yours is a proud heritage. And on Monday, we will honor the thirty-five heroes from this island – and the heroes from across America – who have given their lives in Iraq and in all our nation’s wars. And we will honor the sacrifice our troops are making each day on our behalf.

But we must never forget that honoring our fighting men and women requires more than just paying tribute to them on Memorial Day. It requires having civilian leadership that’s serving our troops as well as they’re serving us – and that means leadership that shows good judgment about when to deploy them. Because it didn’t serve our troops well to go to war in Iraq without asking the tough questions first; or to send them to fight without the support to defend themselves and secure the peace. It didn’t serve our troops well to launch a war based more on ideology and politics than on any urgent threat to our nation. And that is why I opposed the Iraq war from the start.

It’s time to end this war so we can finish the fight against al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan and combat the other threats of the 21st Century – and we need to combat them not with tough talk or bluster, but with tough diplomacy and strong alliances. That’s the kind of leadership our troops deserve. And that’s the kind of leadership I will offer as Commander-in-Chief.

But America’s obligation to our servicemen and women does not end when they take off the uniform. We have a sacred trust with our veterans and we have to keep it. The other day, we had a chance to do this. There was a bill up for a vote in the Senate called the 21st Century GI Bill that would help make college affordable for today’s veterans without harming retention rates. This bill was proposed by my friend Senator Jim Webb, a Marine himself, and by leaders of both parties. It’s designed to update the original GI Bill that gave veterans like my grandfather the chance to go to college after World War II.

Thanks to bipartisan support, the bill passed by a vote of 75 to 22. But one of the people opposing it was John McCain. Now, let me be clear, no one can dispute John McCain’s love for this country. But here’s what I don’t understand. I don’t understand why John McCain would side with George Bush and oppose our plan to make college more affordable for our veterans. George Bush and John McCain may think our plan is too generous, but I could not disagree more. Putting a college degree within reach for our veterans isn’t being too generous; it’s the least we can do for our heroes. And I will continue to fight in the months to come to give those who have defended America the chance to achieve its dream.

But there is so much more work that has to be done for our veterans. Just look at the VA hospital here in San Juan. This hospital was built nearly four decades ago and is in desperate need of renovations and repairs. There’s not enough room. It’s not designed to help women veterans. And it’s not well-equipped to provide care if you’re paralyzed or disabled. That’s unacceptable. When I’m President, we’ll review what’s wrong with your VA hospital and all our VA hospitals and solve any problems we find swiftly. We need to make sure that the veterans here in San Juan are getting the same quality care as veterans in Chicago and across the 50 states – and that those who have worn the uniform of the United States of America are being treated with the respect and dignity they have earned.

That’s why I’ve pledged to build a 21st century VA as President. It means fixing our system so it works not just for servicemen, but for service-women. It means no more red tape – it’s time to give every service-member electronic copies of medical and service records upon discharge. It means no more shortfalls – we’ll fully fund VA health care. It means no more delays – we’ll pass on-time budgets. It means no more means-testing – it’s time to allow every veteran into the VA system. It means making sure our veterans are laid to rest with honor. And it means continuing the work I’ve begun on the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee and having a policy of a zero tolerance for veterans sleeping on our streets.

I’ll also build on the work I did in the Senate to confront one of the signature injuries of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan – PTSD. A recent study by the Rand Corporation found that because of inadequate mental health care, the number of suicides among veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan may actually exceed the number of combat deaths. And yet, the other day, we found out that a VA psychologist actually instructed her staff to refrain from making PTSD diagnosis because it was costing the government too much money. Costing our government too much money. Think about that. How many veterans might be going without the care they need? How many are slipping through the cracks?

We are a better nation than this. And we have to do better than this. In the Senate, I’ve helped lead a bipartisan effort to stop the unfair practice of kicking out troops who suffer from PTSD. And when I’m President, we’ll enhance mental health screening and treatment at all levels: from enlistment, to deployment, to reentry into civilian life. We’ll bring on more mental health professionals, and give them more training to recognize the signs of illness and we’ll help dispel the stigma of seeking care.

I refuse to accept that in the United States of America, we can’t serve all our veterans as well as they’re serving us. I refuse to accept that we have to let veterans go without the care they need or fall into homelessness. I refuse to accept that veterans here in Puerto Rico have to be treated with less priority or receive a lower standard of care than veterans anyplace else.

I believe in an America that stands by those who’ve worn its uniform the way it stood by my grandfather after World War II, that keeps its sacred trust with our veterans, and lives up to the creed of the legendary 65th, the Borinqueneers– honor y fidelidad. We must always remember that we honor our highest ideals by honoring the men and women who have sacrificed for them. That’s the work that lies before us, and that’s what I’ll do each day as President of the United States. I’m asking you to hope, and I’m asking you to help. Su voto es decisivo. Juntos, podemos cambiar el mund. Muchas gracias.

“There was a bill up for a vote in the Senate called the 21st Century GI Bill that would help make college affordable for today’s veterans without harming retention rates.”

Be careful Senator. The bill is estimated to reduce retention from 42% to 36%, a reduction of 14.3%; however, this reduction would be offset by a 16% increase in recruiting. And considering only 80% of new recruits have a diploma and 15% have criminal waivers the Webb bill is exactly what our military needs in the face of declining recruit quality.

Obama the Fraud, the flip flopper. Obama will say anything and do anything for votes. He has been flip flopping all through this forgein policy debate.

Comment by KC

Obama is not using the bill to benifit the Vets, he is using it to get votes. If you read the whole post. He claims he is concerned for the Vets yet the bill to help the ones readjust to civilian life failed by 3 votes and one whas his. Where was he then? He states how he wants to give our men and women all they deserve for serving our country then goes on to say McCain, don’t get him wrong, McCain does care for the vets, but does not want to. You have to research the man.

Obama’s Service and/or Veteran honors = ZERO

McCain would Know More about what should be on the G.I. Bill than Obama who is “clueless” about service to our country. McCain makes Smart decisions for our G.I.s.

Obama is out of his league here. He should shut up while he has a chance. Next you will hear him say that he has more military experience than McCain because he played army while he was a child. Obama is a fraud. What you hear in one state is different than in the next state. In other words he will tell you what you want to hear and not the truth. And this is the change he wants to bring, how?

Comment by David Richardson

I am a Republican but will not vote for McCain this year. I was shocked with respect to his comment that Obama never bothered to serve. It is incredibly offensive that someone who was in the military to ever use such language when discussing the military.

McCain’s recent dumping of advisors and endorsements begs the question, why did he employ or accept them in the first place.

Obama , even with all of his faults and inexperience, is exactly what this country needs at this time.

My brother-inlaw faught in desert storm and served his country from 1970 until just a few years ago. He does not think the bill they just passed is all that great. It opens the dorr for any one to go in act too stupid to keep and get educated while the real Vets who serve their country and deserve the education gets the same as the jerk. Now that is a fair bill, reward the jerks with the men you want to honor.

Comment by KC

Please stop pretending to be Jo Anne you are making your Obama candidate look cheap. It is cheap when you have to do anything to get people to vote your way.

Comment by KC

If you follow these blogs you soon learn just how childish some of Obamas’ supporter are. Now that builds respect for the man. He has people acting like 4 and 5 year olds voting for him.

Comment by KC

And when you attack a man for not caring for the very thing he is you get back what you give. Obama used his vote to sway Vets to vote for him and to use against Obama not to help the Vets. Look how quickly he made it to the media. Lightening doesn’t move that fast.

Comment by barbara e

It looks like the Obama supporters having nothing left but to steal peoples identities to build up their sorry candidate. The person blogging as Jo Anne is what is left of the mentality of the Obama supporters.

Obama is a user and unfortunatly it works with some of us. We look at the words and not the action. We listen to the media and not the actions.

Comment by KC

Jo Anne got your back. Not dumb enough to think it was you.

Comment by Jo Anne

KC.
I believe McCain had a problem with the GI Bill presented because there was no incentives for re-enlistment.
It was blanket provisions, with no sliding scale rewards for those who stay in the military. McCain thinks the 20 year lifers should have earned benefits greater than single enlistments.

Comment by Dennis

President Obama will surround himself with the top advisers and will lead this country well. The other thing is that he listens to opposing opinions and has no problem changing when presented with a better argument. The idea that anyone knows what it is like to be a President in 2008 is limited to one man, George Bush, and he cannot run again.

We need intelligence and judgement for the new day. McCain has had his day and should stay in the Senate and pretend to be a maverick. Clinton should resign from public life and write her memoirs–she has shown she is not suited to be a world leader by her erratic, debt-written, conflicted campaign wasting all of her built in institutional advantages, trying to continually change the rules, change her message, change her personae, and STILL LOSING to a smart rookie.

People who serve until retirement get things like: PENSION, HEALTHCARE.

The GI Bill was never intended as a retention tool. It was designed to ease the transition back to civilian life for veterans.

Obviously, a majority of you here don’t think a veteran who has been to combat deserves an education. Despicable.

And since so many of you “bloggers” *think* you know everything about veterans benefits as does Sen. McCain…why don’t you explain his HORRIBLE voting grades given by, heres the kicker, “Veterans Service Organizations”
— Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America gave McCain a grade of D for his record of voting against veterans. (By contrast, Obama got a B+.)

– Disabled Veterans of America noted McCain’s dismal 20 percent voting record on veterans’ issues. (Obama had an 80 percent.)

– In a list of “Key Votes,” Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) notes McCain “Voted Against Us” 15 times and “Voted For Us” only 8. (Obama voted for VVA 12 times, and against only once.)

Obama Does Not Care about Human Life….

Obama Blocked Born Alive Infant Protection Act

by Jill Stanek, guest reporter
He often stood alone as an Illinois lawmaker in opposition to protections for babies who survived abortion.
Note: This report first appeared in the April issue of Citizen magazine.
On Jan. 10, 2005, newly elected U.S. Sen. Barack Obama visited former colleagues and staffers at the Illinois state Capitol, where he had served seven years as state senator. I happened to be at the Capitol that day, too, and a friend and I took the opportunity to speak to Obama, who had not yet achieved rock-star status and was still approachable.
We were in Springfield to lobby for passage of the state Born Alive Infant Protection Act, legislation that would require hospitals to care for infants who survive an abortion. Obama spoke against the legislation in 2001 and 2002 and single-handedly defeated it in committee in 2003.
My friend stood in Obama’s path and said, “Senator, we are going to pass Born Alive here in Illinois this year.”
Obama smiled smoothly and agreed, “I think you will,” adding, “I would have voted for the Born Alive Infant Protection Act in Illinois had it been worded the same as the federal bill. I think that’s the position the Democrats should take.”
There’s just one thing he forgot to mention: Obama had stopped his committee from adding the federal wording.
With Obama no longer in the state Senate, the Born Alive legislation passed in 2005.

Hillary is such a fake. When she thought she was going to win, she did an interview saying that MI and FL broke the rules and should not be counted. Now that she is loosing, she is saying that Obama don´t want to count the votes. The only problem with that is, she wants all of the votes and the delegates. Obama better not make her the number 2.

All of you people can hate Obama and the rest of us because we are black, but your hate will not stop Obama from becoming the next President of the United States of America. This is History in the making. Our current President made history also. He had tea with the bin Laden family a day before 9/11 happened. Who is drinking tea with who.

Can´t wait when Hillary looses and she has to face her civil case against Peter Paul. She better pray that they don´t find anything to file criminal charges against her. I think they will. Hillary will keep fighting because she don´t want to go to jail.

It does bother me that Hillary is getting in debt more and more and I think she wants Obama to pay for it. She wants Obama to choose her as his running mate as well.

It bothers me that McCain thinks that only a militar can be a president. Like the only thing we want to do is to go to war.

It bothers me some people that because they do not like Obama’s personality they do not admit that the guy is running the best campaign or that he has the best policies

Rene,

In oregon Obama stated that Iran and other rogue countries were not a threat. Oregon being a very left left democratic state.

In Montana Obama states that Iran and other rogue countries were a great threat. Montana being a moderate democratic state

It is Obama that flip flops and has a different stance for every state he goes into.

Democrates for McCain08
