Obama Reaches Out to Cuban Americans

Barack Obama addressed the Cuban American National Foundation (CANF) in Miami, a group the RNC today described as more moderate than most Cuban Americans, who have traditionally voted Republican.

While many Cuban Americans are in favor of the strict policy towards Cuba that are in place, Jorge Mas Santos, the chairman of CANF said today that Raul Castro would never submit himself to the current U.S. policy towards Cuba, which says there will be no negotiating until the nation “release all political prisoners and make moves towards democracy.”

“Although this may sound tough, on its own it’s ineffective and plays into the hands of Raul Castro. I have news for you – that is not happening. Raul Castro will never engage in any democratic reform because to do so will seal his fate. Wishful thinking with our arms crossed as spectators with no time table hoping for the reformation of Raul Castro is not a policy. Ladies and gentlemen it is surrender,” said Mas Santos.

Obama was received with enthusiastic applause and chants of, “Yes we can!” a phrase often heard in Obama’s speeches. “I don’t presume to know everything that I need to know about Cuba and our policies there and I’m here not just to talk, but to listen,” Obama began. “And although I admit that my job today is to talk – this is just hello, it is not goodbye and so I’m gonna be spending a lot of time here in South Florida, making sure that I am listening not only to Jorge, but to all the people here, to find out how we can best advance the cause of freedom in Cuba.”

Obama noted that for his entire lifetime, U.S. - Cuba policy has been static and yet nothing has changed. John McCain, he contends, will offer more of the same. “He joined the parade of politicians who make the same empty promises year after year, decade after decade. Instead of offering a strategy for change, he
chose to distort my position, embrace George Bush’s, and continue a policy that’s done nothing to advance freedom for the Cuban people. That’s the political posture that John McCain has chosen, and all it
shows is that you can’t take his so-called straight talk seriously,” he said.

The candidate assured the crowd that while he has said he would meet with leaders like Castro, Chavez, and Iranian President Ahmadinejad, he would still be tough with the Cuban dictator. “John McCain’s been going
around the country talking about how much I want to meet with Raul
Castro, as if I’m looking for a social gathering, I’m gonna invite him
over and have some tea. That’s not what I said, John McCain knows it.” He added, “I will never, ever, compromise the cause of liberty. And unlike John McCain, I would never, ever, rule out a course of action that could advance the cause of liberty.”

Obama favors easing travel restrictions for Cuban Americans and allowing remittance to the island, but said, “I will maintain the embargo. It provides us with the leverage to present the regime with a clear choice: If you take significant steps toward democracy, beginning with the freeing of all political prisoners, we will take steps to begin normalizing relations,” Obama said.

Obama is for ALL people….anglo-americans are just use to being catered to but this is a new day……and if not Obama, another will soon come….

Comment by KC

I have never been catered to, I have had to work my back side off for every advancement I got. I have never belittled anyone and always took people for who they are by their actions, but I do reconize racism when I hear it. I would vote for C. Powell or C. Rice but I will never vote for Obama and it is because of his 107 no votes when those very votes could of made changes and by the people he surounds himself with. I know that the people you hang with are 99 out of 100 very like you with the same beliefs and the same views. That is why I will not and can not vote for him.

Comment by Diane

Maybe, just maybe, talking with Castro will lead to better lives for Cubans. Wouldn’t the Cuban who have escaped to the US welcome that opportunity?

Comment by Jeff X

Cubans know the Democrats offer nothing to them. Dems support Communism, so why should they trust Obama and his Commie friends.

Comment by KC

Yes they would. Reseach history and see if talking ever changed anything. It would be nice and it would be a blessing for all Cubans but Raul is not going to give up his power. Not without a fight.

It is Anglo-Americans who have created the most prosperous and free nation in the world. We will not allow Obama to win in November. We are just now learning that he intends to bring us doen to the level of a 3rd world country to be “fair.” Not gonna happen. He has almost all the black people voting for him and most say in interviews it is because he looks like them. Well, what’s good for the black goose is good for the white gander. If (when) we vote for McCain or Hillary at 90% Obama will be only a memory. White Anglo-Americans have built this country and intend to continue to drive where they please and have their homes at whatever temperature they like. Obama’s toast.

No one has done so much for ALL people as the Generous Americans–a culture dominated by White Christians. If there is a disaster we are there. If there is a famine we are there. Our own blood freed many in Europe and Asia.

Comment by maire thomson

Maybe, just maybe Obama’s talking with Raul Castro might lead to more persecution of his people and strengthen his prestige in the world since the Great American President is talking to him. NO WAY JOSE!

All one has to do to look at what an “Obama” America will look like is to look at other places that have Liberal Minority Mayors & City Councils. Another words…America will look like Detroit.

Comment by Jaiye

maire thomson, you are right…anglo-americans have built this country, but off the backs of who??…don’t get me started on that level….that’s history and that’s where it should stay at this point and time……

I am reading where posters are saying Obama is only for “blacks” which I take offense to…..everyday you see him reaching to other groups of people….America isnt just Black and White anymore, and it haven’t been for some time….America’s “history” always resisted “change” and it is evident with all this mess thats going on now that some still feel the same…..It’s not even about just America anymore though…We are a global society and I applaud OBAMA for reaching out to people here to resolve matters at home so in turn we can focus on global matters….Cuba and any other place wouldn’t resent us so much if we stopped trying to run everybody and make them what they don’t want to be…how unique and beautiful will “America” be if everybody lived as we live…..I’d rather stay original….and with Castro dying out, I think this would be a good time to consider opening up Cuban conversations…besides, I have personally met some that aren’t in communications with their families back there…imagine that being you….

i think you will find the diffrences among the Cuban generations. the older ones dont move as well. they are happy with status quo.there maybe an opportunity for the older generation to visit their x homeland . that might be inviting as long as they are not giving up what they have already earned here. unconditional citizenship and rights that we have in our constitution.
possibilities are forming in favor of Obama.
i have friends that are Cuban one said nothing will change and anothers aid he would love to visit.he thinks opening exchange to Cuba might open the door for residents of cuba to start enjoying some thing we enjoy.

could go ethier way.

Reply to Brenda in SC - agree with you totally except I don’t think he likes the blacks any better than the Jews, whites, cubans, etc. He is a User & a Taker and doesn’t care what color your skin is when he walks all over you. He does however, love the Rezkos, wrights abuchi and abassi, Ayres, etc.

Comment by KC

OK let’s send our money to Cuba and build their economy and help Raul. Why have embargos if you send the money to make them worthless? Telling the Fl Cugans he will give them the ability to send US money there is real intellegent. I just love that one.

Comment by KC

So sorry cubans no cugans.

Comment by the southern dem

You would think the cuban people would be very wary of those who promise alot and only speak in generalities….they learned their lesson with Castro and now they think Obama is their savior….jus another castro in sheep clothing!

Comment by constance

Senator Obama flip-flopped again. Few months ago, he stated that he would talk to Cuba’s leader without preconditions. Now Obama was BLASTING at Senator McCain for stating his original version of talks with Cuba without preconditions. Recently Obama flip-flopped stating that Senator McCain distorted his views. Recently, while Obama saying to the Cubans in Florida that he will talk to Cuba’s leader with a condition. Just because he had been criticized for talking without preconditions, now Obama CHANGED to something with a condition. THIS IS THE CHANGE HE IS TALKING ABOUT. CHANGE EVERYDAY depending upon where the inklings of the electorate goes. His motto is CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN. CHANGE.. CHANGE.. CHANGE! flip-flop-flip-flop flip-flop!!!

Who could believe this man who changes his words frequently just to get our votes.

He wants to make it appear that he is for all of us by spending billions of our tax money to all for equal distribution of wealth. He is good at it, as long as it is not his MONEY. Watch your wallet my fellow citizens.

Comment by KC

Now let me see if I got it right, he will allow our money to go to Cuba, add more taxes on big businesses so more leave and put 50 cents more on gas and now passed the Vets education bill where you can serve one hour or 20 years and get a free education and this is going to do what for the US? Plese tell me HOW Obama’s great change there will help?

Comment by annie

To Jaiye - Wake up and smell the roses - obama doesn’t care about anyone but himself - sorry to burst your bubble!

BE AWARE CUBAN-AMERICANS - the obama won’t do anything but more harm to your people and to Cuba.

Comment by KC

While you praise Obama for lifting the black people take a look at Odinga whom he ligitimized and still talks to. Oh yeah like Obama cares if you are black, white, christion or jewish, native american, or Cuban. Odinga is radical muslem and very busy k!lling blacks. You know the people whom you think Obama cares so much for. Go research it isn’t his race it is who and what he stands for.

Comment by Jeff X

Obama would attend and speak at a KLAN meeting if he thought he could pick up a few more votes.
Come to think of it, the KLAN was a Democratic Party invention.

Comment by KC

The point is he had a chance to make these great changes and all he did was a present 107, or no show or vote on what would benifit him, just like the vet bill. Minutes after signing going on the media with I vote yes and McCain voted no, see icare about the vets and he doesn’t. That says it all, it wasn’t his concern for the vets but the votes.

Only one week for the Democrats to investigate Larry Sinclair allegations before the Republicans have it for the general election.

Comment by Matthew

This case is being manipulated by those who were upper class exploiters before the Cuban Revolution. Only preempted by the US Cuba Embargo. The Cuban Revolution could have many implications involved in why Cuban Americans want to go back to their country to, reclaim land, ownership and control the affairs of an already shaken country. I believe it is unwise to speak early in proclaiming the Cuban people free in future talks with Fidel’s brother Raul. This in my opinion has already set the terms and preconditions and speaks loud and clear to what they may hear as war. Independent countries will never assume or make preemptive courses toward action. Only preexamined patterns of nationalism. This will put more holds and no room for necessary talks or cooperation. These are dictators not diplomist, the only talks are through cultural, social, necessitive exchange. Freedom is expressed in different ways in a socialist nation, I believe through an open oligarchy envolved in tyrany.

Good - let Obama negotiate with Castro - maybe they will capture him and conduct their re-education indoctrination program on him. Hope McCain wins the election - just for national security sake.

Where do you people come from? Majority of you are the most negative opinionated group of people I have ever heard of in all my 47 years living. One of you had the audacity to speak about being a Christian, what are you praising? Why don’t you just say change scares you or just the fact on having a black man in office. Unless you are just hiding behind your computers and spittting out all of you hatred feelings, but in the meantime you hope no one will catch you being your mean hateful self. How would you face your peers and co-workers if they knew how judgemental you are against something or someone in such hateful matters. You as a American have the right to your opinion and the right to express it, but when you call people fools or demean someone else because they are not agreeing with your opinon you are crossing some lines you would not be so willing to speak in person.

that is the truth and fact. that cannot be hidden it is what it is.

Obama is NOT qualfied and will never be elected due to his WEAK and questinable background.
Hillary Clinton is the best qualified to be President of the USA - MILLIONS are voting for her and she is way up in the polls - a FACT that obama is very concerned about - and should be.
That is why the obama group is trying to push Hillary out - again - they know that she can WIN and he cannot.
IF obama STEALS the nomination with the support of the DNC by blocking FL & MI voters - I will never vote for him - will get my “change” from the GOP.
So - obama may get the nomination - BUT NEVER be President - MILLIONS will NEVER vote for Obama - so what has he won???

I can’t believe what a bunch of hateful people that post here.

For all you who think Obama will not be elected, better buy stock in Kleenex because you’re going to need boxes to wipe away your tears when he’s sworn in as President of the United States.

Obama is not perfect, but unlike Clinton and McCain, he admits it. He knows he is going to make mistakes but with the aide of proper advisers and cabinet members, he will do just fine.

What a bunch of sorry souls most of you are, you’re so full of hate mainly because Obama is black, that you won’t even consider the possibility he can do good.

Pathetic.

Comment by KC

Yes and while we are at it think of the fact he promised to allow Cubans to send money to Cuba which boost their ecconomy, helps Raul Castro and makes the embargos worthless. So think of just how smart Obama is. He either wants to get Raul in his pocket or he is lying once again.

Comment by KC

Only a person slow to think would not realize if you send money to Cuba from half the Cuban population they will increase Cuba’s enconomy by a very large boost, and while boosting Cubas’ and Raul he will be taking from you and every other American. Real smart guy there.

Comment by KC

And if he is doing a sneaky way of boosting Cubas’ economy then what does that make him?

Comment by KC

I sure can see why a person would back Obama. He is just the kind of guy you want. Bleed the americans dry with taxes send money to Cuba and run more businesses out of the country by adding a bigger tax burden on them. Yep good old Prest can’t vote Obama with his great pormises of change is going towork wonders and split whole cucmbers.

Comment by the southern dem

But this is the real point for Soros and Obama handlers…defest the USA from within…same thing that Wright advocates as does Ayers…why would Obama be any different. It has been well demonstrated that to stimulate the economy you do not raise taxes…and not only that greatly expand programs requiring more taxes on those you expect not to tax. And you think taxing business will expand their busuness and more jobs???not quite….me thinks you may be smoking weed.

You know I saw a college grad read a spec wrong for a road they were putting in at a mall. No one noticed till it was 3/4 done and would cost more to undo than try to make entrances and exit that were backwards. I have seen bridges built with curves and falling because they forgot you can’t do that without special peers. I have seen them try to talk down to those with a lesser educations thinking they are smarter but I know enough of them to know, if they are not told they dont think well when left to figure it out on their own. And watching them with Obama I am just really stumped. How can they not see how crazy his latest promise is.

Comment by KC

It took me two sec. of reading what he promised Cubans to see how crazy that plan is. Only a person who can’t think for themselfs would not see he is either finacing Raul by aiding the Cuban economy and a traitor or just plain dumber than a 5th grader.

BTW, what polls are you looking at that has her way ahead in anything???

Comment by Wascally Wingnut Wival

Obama President, Clinton VP. An uppity coloured boy and a ball-breakin’ woman together at the top. The worst result in living memory for the Republicans in the Presidential election plus a rout in the House and Senate. No doubt about it, right wingers, you are going to suffer as you have never suffered before.

Hopefully, you’ll do a little growing up in the process and finally purge your party of the religious nutcases that were so handy in bulking up the vote over the past few years but have ultimately destroyed the GOP. Wealthy people, genuine conservatives and the nutjob god-botherers never made for a stable coalition in the long term.

Think how much clearer things would be if religion and politics were separated, as they are in the rest of the civilised world. You vote for the party that best represents your wants and needs, and select candidates for their personal qualities. Let all ethical/religious matters be decided on a non-party conscience vote and hold the individual candidates responsible for their decisions.

The college preppies have proven him right.
But a lot of others see him for what he is, a good speaker.
As for him putting good people in office to support him if he becomes Pres. I worry about his judgement in choosing them considering his judgement in choosing his past associates. And people want his guy to choose our Supreme Court Judges? God help us, we will need it.
Oh yeah, give me a break with the lay off Michelle. If she wants to shut up then people will lay off. She talks to people like they are 4 years old and slightly stupid. I can see her condesending to talk to the wives of the leaders of foreign countries. What an ambassador for America!

The Cuban American National Foundation is the most prominent of the anti-Castro Cuban exile groups in Miami. Mr. Obama’s appearance was viewed by his supporters here as a sign of change in Cuban-American political leanings.

Jorge Mas Santos, son of the group’s founder, introduced Mr. Obama and endorsed his plan to lift restrictions on visiting relatives in Cuba and sending money. He said it was time for a new approach to dealing with Cuba.

“The other centerpiece of U.S.-Cuba policy has been that there should be no negotiations and conversations with Raúl Castro,” Mr. Santos said. “Although this may sound tough, on its own it’s ineffective and plays into the hands of Raúl Castro.”

Ari…does PRESENT count as a vote?

Perhaps McCain missed some votes because he was out looking for those constantly missing Senators from states 51 through 57.

Good Morning Obama supporters…Happy Memorial Day Weekend…do something FUN this weekend…Find a Memorial Day parade…knock down an 80 year old veteran with an American Flag marching in the parade…then stomp on the flag…Obama and his buddy Ayers would really enjoy seeing that!
