Obama and McCain Spar over GI Bill
Barack Obama flew back to Washington, DC, this morning to vote on the GI Bill authored by Virginia Senator Jim Webb - a bill which Mr. Obama references often on the campaign trail.
On the Senate floor this morning, Senator Obama praised his potential fall rival as a war hero before attacking Senator McCain’s position on the bill. “I can’t understand why he would line up behind the President in opposition to this GI Bill. I can’t believe why he believes it is too generous to our veterans. I could not disagree with him more on this issue. There are many issues that lend themselves to partisan posturing, but giving our veterans the chance to go to college should not be one of them,” Obama said.
The White House is against the bill, as is John McCain because of its $52 billion price tag and because the Department of Defense believes it will negatively affect retention rates.
Senator McCain, who was not on hand for the morning vote, responded to Obama with a brutal statement. “It is typical, but no less offensive that Senator Obama uses the Senate floor to take cheap shots at an opponent and easy advantage of an issue he has less than zero understanding of…Unlike Senator Obama, my admiration, respect and deep gratitude for America’s veterans is something more than a convenient campaign pledge. I think I have earned the right to make that claim,” the statement read.
McCain along with Senators Graham and Burr have introduced alternative legislation “that would provide veterans with a substantial increase in educational benefits,” which is less money than proposed in the Webb bill, which overwhelmingly passed in the Senate 75-22.
The Arizona senator acknowledged Webb’s own service to the country and his affection for the troops and then didn’t mince words as he chided Obama. “I will not accept from Senator Obama, who did not feel it was his responsibility to serve our country in uniform, any lectures on my regard for those who did.”
The scolding continued as McCain accused Obama of playing politics with the issue. “Perhaps, if Senator Obama would take the time and trouble to understand this issue he would learn to debate an honest disagreement respectfully. But, as he always does, he prefers impugning the motives of his opponent, and exploiting a thoughtful difference of opinion to advance his own ambitions. If that is how he would behave as President, the country would regret his election.”
The Obama campaign is expected to respond with a statement of their own. Read the full McCain statement below the jump.
ARLINGTON, VA — U.S. Senator John McCain issued the following statement on Senator Barack Obama’s remarks concerning veterans benefits:
“It is typical, but no less offensive that Senator Obama uses the Senate floor to take cheap shots at an opponent and easy advantage of an issue he has less than zero understanding of. Let me say first in response to Senator Obama, running for President is different than serving as President. The office comes with responsibilities so serious that the occupant can’t always take the politically easy route without hurting the country he is sworn to defend. Unlike Senator Obama, my admiration, respect and deep gratitude for America’s veterans is something more than a convenient campaign pledge. I think I have earned the right to make that claim.
“When I was five years old, a car pulled up in front of our house in New London, Connecticut, and a Navy officer rolled down the window, and shouted at my father that the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor. My father immediately left for the submarine base where he was stationed. I rarely saw him again for four years. My grandfather, who commanded the fast carrier task force under Admiral Halsey, came home from the war exhausted from the burdens he had borne, and died the next day. I grew up in the Navy; served for twenty-two years as a naval officer; and, like Senator Webb, personally experienced the terrible costs war imposes on the veteran. The friendships I formed in war remain among the closest relationships in my life. The Navy is still the world I know best and love most. In Vietnam, where I formed the closest friendships of my life, some of those friends never came home to the country they loved so well .
“But I am running for the office of Commander-in-Chief. That is the highest privilege in this country, and it imposes the greatest responsibilities. It would be easier politically for me to have joined Senator Webb in offering his legislation. More importantly, I feel just as he does, that we owe veterans the respect and generosity of a great nation because no matter how generously we show our gratitude it will never compensate them fully for all the sacrifices they have borne on our behalf.
“Senators Graham, Burr and I have offered legislation that would provide veterans with a substantial increase in educational benefits. The bill we have sponsored would increase monthly education benefits to $1500; eliminate the $1200 enrollment fee; and offer a $1000 annually for books and supplies. Importantly, we would allow veterans to transfer those benefits to their spouses or dependent children or use a part of them to pay down existing student loans. We also increase benefits to the Guard and Reserve, and even more generously to those who serve in the Selected Reserve.
“I know that my friend and fellow veteran, Senator Jim Webb, an honorable man who takes his responsibility to veterans very seriously, has offered legislation with very generous benefits. I respect and admire his position, and I would never suggest that he has anything other than the best of intentions to honor the service of deserving veterans. Both Senator Webb and I are united in our deep appreciation for the men and women who risk their lives so that the rest of us may be secure in our freedom. And I take a backseat to no one in my affection, respect and devotion to veterans. And I will not accept from Senator Obama, who did not feel it was his responsibility to serve our country in uniform, any lectures on my regard for those who did.
“The most important difference between our two approaches is that Senator Webb offers veterans who served one enlistment the same benefits as those offered veterans who have re-enlisted several times. Our bill has a sliding scale that offers generous benefits to all veterans, but increases those benefits according to the veteran’s length of service. I think it is important to do that because, otherwise, we will encourage more people to leave the military after they have completed one enlistment. At a time when the United States military is fighting in two wars, and as we finally are beginning the long overdue and very urgent necessity of increasing the size of the Army and Marine Corps, one study estimates that Senator Webb’s bill will reduce retention rates by 16%.
“Most worrying to me, is that by hurting retention we will reduce the numbers of men and women who we train to become the backbone of all the services, the noncommissioned officer. In my life, I have learned more from noncommissioned officers I have known and served with than anyone else outside my family. And in combat, no one is more important to their soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen, and to the officers who command them, than the sergeant and petty officer. They are very hard to replace. Encouraging people not to choose to become noncommissioned officers would hurt the military and our country very badly. As I said, the office of President, which I am seeking, is a great honor, indeed, but it imposes serious responsibilities. How faithfully the President discharges those responsibilities will determine whether he or she deserves the honor. I can only tell you I intend to deserve the honor if I am fo rtunate to receive it, even if it means I must take politically unpopular positions at times and disagree with people for whom I have the highest respect and affection.

Listen Obama degenerates, just listen to what your guy really has to say once in awhile rather than praise his lofty delivery style rather over as substance is never there.
Here again, Obama is obviously dangerous and has no real intention to change anything for the better. He is not for the preservation of this great country. His policies will destroy this country and we will end up with a war we cannot win and believe me, Obama will force us into such a weak position militarily that he will enact the draft again because he will leave us with no other option.
Watch out as Obama is absolutely scary. Parent, watch out because your kids will be drafted under Obama.
Make Iran Grow
I believe you views are correct. Americans have to stand up against him..with no party loyalty…and vote this guy off the National Stage..
Clearly…McCain is trying to stick with the service chiefs who feel the enhanced benefits are not necessary at this time–and may actually hurt retention of important mid-career enlisted and officers. Obama–is clueless regarding anything about the military services–he’s all for feel good and do good–even if it doens’t make sense.
I am saddened–that none of the major media news houses–reported on the opening of the Libertarian Party convention in Denver today.
Big suprise in November folks–many disgruntled democrats and republicans have come home to roost along with Bob Barr with a more conservative and American option–than our two major parties.
I predict mass movements of conservatives to the LP in disgust and/or rebellion of the weakly conservative–or outright socialist agenda’s of the three major candidates.
Look for some shake ups (Ihope).
McCain shows himself to be Presidential; Obama is a political hack and novice who should defer to Hillary Clinton as the better Democratic candidate.
Make Iran Glow
Maybe you should ask yourself, after all the years of McCains service and alleged understanding the troops. Why hasnt he done something sooner? Why wait until election year? Hes a Senior Senator that claims to be able to reach across the aisle. Why hasnt he reached!!!
Id rather vote for Obama not knowing what to expect than vote for McCain knowing I would be footing the bill for Iraqs Civil War for the next 100 years.
A super Power with a slumping economy. How much longer will we be super with our current policies????

McCain is substance over rhetoric You go McCain and send that little school boy back where he belongs. We don’t need a child are president. Obama is playing politics with no substance.
Democrats for McCain08
Hi Bonney, What is Mr. McCain saying about the attack on him and our military men and women by Sen. Tom Harkin? If this would have been a republicans attacking Obama that way the democrats would be hollering for his head! Why isn’t Obama disowning Tom Harkin?
http://goodtimepolitics.com/2008/05/22/iowa-sen-tom-harkin-military-background-makes-mccain-unfit-to-be-commander-in-chief/
I think McCain just lost by going against this legislation.
McCain a hero who was one a prisoner of war knows what it means to sacrifice for this country.
Our men and women are coming back from Iraq some with missing limbs and some gave the ultimate sacrifice.
You can’t put a price on those things. Therefore ANYTHING we can offer our servicemembers should be offered as readily and as freely as the service they offer to this country. This is a no brainer. We search and find the money for this. NO QUESTIONS ASKED
I think Obama supporting this legislation makes him look doubly out of touch since he never wore the uniform.
To take it a step further seems like he is more concilliatory to Webb and is totally disrespectful towards Obama is if he is beneath him when concerning matters of the Armed Forces.
As a 20 veteran of the Marine Corps and the Navy, I can truly say that McCain is an embarrassment to the Armed Forces.

This is for Iran Glow. You are some sort of war hunter it seems with a log in like “iran glow” what would you have against the draft. Afraid they would send you or one of your chicken hawk friends to actually do some of this fighting you seem so fond of. What a guy!
I`m not sure how many veterans are on here, but I will admit that I felt much better going into combat with men who had combat experience. Whatever incentive it takes to keep that experience in our armed forces, is well worth the effort. For all of you self-proclaimed Obama intellectuals out there, how would you like to spend all of your twenties in college, just to see your university hand out the same PhD., you just worked your a$$ off for, to every freshman, at the end of his first year. That wouldn`t seem very fair, would it. All veterans deserve all we can give them, but hard work, and time served, also deserves it`s own special rewards.
Listen to the veteran Senator McCain. His experiences to the matter speaks for the truth. Obama is a policial speculator, is asserting his position for his political gain. he does not have any experience on the military. He does not have any loyalty and respect for the veterans. His statements are all hypocricy, and regularly flip-flops depending on the inkling of the American people. Beware ….,all he wants is your vote. Obama insulted with a low class remarks the white American people of faith. Obama was rude and had no ethics, even to the Office or the US President, the office that he desperately seeks. BO sounds like a radical dictator. He is already starting to dictate how we live.
If we look back in history, almost all the BEST US presidents have served in action with the US military. Naming some of them were George Washington, James Monroe, Andrew Jackson, William H. Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor, Franklin Pierce, James Buchannan, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Jackson, Ulysses Grant, Rutherford Hayes, James Garfield, Chester Arthur, Benjamin Harrison, William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, George Bush.
George W Bush served, but not in action. Harkins is losing his mind, trying to justify and save the face of his co-liberal Obama who has never served our military. Harkins sounds lunatic and have forgotten that the best US presidents have served in active military. Harkins is destroying the historical facts of our country, he forgets and need to retire.
Obama get off the stage and let a Real American lead us. Did you think us Americans wouldn’t Read about this G.I. Bill and Just listen to your rhetoric. McCain is 100% correct and you, Obama, are wrong “again”. You don’t give the Same amount of benefits to someone that has been in the military for 6 months as someone that has been in the military 3 “years”. McCain is right….there needs to be a “sliding scale” based on ones “lengh of service” to his or her country. And “definitely” if one has been to “war” they should be receiving More GI benefits than someone that was in the service for like 6 months behind a desk. Obama your “pretty WORDS” don’t mean anything to those of us that actually “read” these Bills.

How absurd is that. Stupid analogy.
We are talking about money for school as a gesture of Thank You for sacrificing for this country. Over the last 7 years service members has sacrificed MORE than any other in the past 35 years. THEY DESERVE MORE. I guess when you go on 4,5,6,7 tours into Iraq the fairness factor goes out the window.
Get real.
“You are some sort of war hunter it seems with a log in like “iran glow” what would you have against the draft.”
I’m not Iran Glow but I will answer this question for myself. If I was called on to serve my country I would do it. I would do it even if I disagreed with the war. I would do it because ANY military loss emboldens the enemy we are fighting and the ones waiting in the darkness for an opportunity to strike. Politics are always involved in wars and they always will be. As a citizen you have two responsibilities when it comes to war: 1. Vote for the politicians who share your views 2. Support the military however you are asked. If you don’t do #1 then shame on you. If you don’t do #2 then you are a traitor and will never have the respect of people who love their country.
Liberal don’t seem to get #2 or the negative consequences of protesting a national cause. Conservatives need to remember #1 to make sure that they aren’t electing people who do not have the nation’s best interests in mind.
McCain 2008!

Yeah right, why don’t you volunteer bozo?
whatever
President Bush told them if they added anything to the bill to fund the troops in Iraq he would veto it. Since John McCain is opposed to earmarks and “pork bellies,” he voted as he said he would, also. Obama is trying to make a big deal out of this as McCain being against our veterans. Give me a break. If McCain had voted for this bill, Obama would have let him have it on voting for a bill that had earmarks and “pork bellies.” I agree with McCain that veterans need to have the benefits and I am 100% in favor of giving them the benefits. My first home was purchased with the GI bill and my spouse went to college on the GI bill. However, no other employer gives full benefits until you have been employed with them for awhile. The government is the employer of the military and I think the government should be focused on retention as well as training. I know I get more vacation time the longer I am employed, better bonuses, etc. If all you people would just think about it, you would see that retaining military personnel is the best thing for the U.S. I lived through the draft of the Vietnam era; I knew boys who went to Canada and boys who went to Vietnam. I don’t want to see a draft instituted again to protect our country. Having a well trained, experienced, seasoned, voluntary military is the best answer. Obama needs to stop the rhetoric. He just keeps making himself look more foolish.

I agree with your assumption that McCain will win but I disagree that Obama will be unemployed. He will suckle at the taxpayers’ teet for four more years and then he will run again. If he doesn’t get elected president he will do whatever it takes to get elected to the Supreme Court. He is power-hungry, determined to make us all liberal socialists and he is young. Unless he comes away from this election cycle so despised by the general public that he will never be liked outside of his secretive political circles in Chicago, we will never get rid of him.
For all you nuts who don’t have the mental capacity to think for yourselves and drink the koolaid all day this is what appease means
ap·pease
–verb (used with object), -peased, -peas·ing.
1. to bring to a state of peace, quiet, ease, calm, or contentment; pacify; soothe: to appease an angry king.
2. to satisfy, allay, or relieve; assuage: The fruit appeased his hunger.
3. to yield or concede to the belligerent demands of (a nation, group, person, etc.) in a conciliatory effort, sometimes at the expense of justice or other principles.
Obama has not mentioned doing any one of the versions of the definitions listed here.
Reading is fundamental. When you start reading and stop weilding words around without knowing what they mean, you will become a better person and America will benefit from a lack of ignorance
JohnsH, if you are a democrat supporting Obama like Tom Harkins, you could say anything to the contrary. But that was my position. Example of one of the best US presidents. Abraham Lincoln who was a REPUBLICAN! He was one of the best US presidents. His Gettysburg Address delivered spontaneously at the Military Service was one of the greatest speeches in the history of the world.
I am proud to be a Republican! Vote Senator McCain! He will protect all of us.
Thanks.

No, he just wants to “negotiate” with the Iranian leader who calls our ally Israel a stinking corpse…and not just negotiate, but negotiate in person in all his presidential glory because, after all, he is Obama and when he speaks, people listen. Like others have said, just what is he going to say when he sits down with someone who has so forcefully asserted his position. Please change your mind? He is too green and stands to do much harm with his naivete. He apparently doesn’t have that great of advisors either or he would quit sticking his flip-flop in his mouth.

I can say the same for you
Omentum, I think every man and woman in our Armed Forces should be able to retire after a tour of duty, but we know that`s not possible. There is not a man anywhere, who respects our troops any more than I do, so stop using your Obama tactics, by trying to make me look unpatriotic. I have earned my right to my opinion on this subject, so put your spin on someone else.
Having worked with every facet of the Montgomery GI Bill, McCain is absolutely correct. Tired of the Dem party not providing the American people the facts.
Democrat turned McCain Dem!!!
HRC, the war on terror I agree with. I think many people would disagree with the war in Iraq as a national cause. I’m not here to debate my personal feelings on the war, but a majority of Americans feel the war was a mistake. Also, immigration reform is a splintered cause, with many different groups campaigning for their own solutions.

Oh please … the fact that this is a PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE question that will be asked at least 20+ times in the upcoming general election give very significant legitimacy to the leaders of rival countries. Having talks with someone to get them in line is not only smart…. it’s gives us more leverage and resolve to strike if requests are not adhered to.
Which part of Israels extinction do you wish to appease the terrorists with?
Constance, my whole point was, why would you prove your counter-point by showing that military service has given us some of the worst presidents in US history? That was my point. You can say the military has given us some of our best presidents, and I agree. But you’d also have to admit it’s given us our worst presidents. Likewise, some of our best presidents never served in the military. I think your point can be easily diluted when looking at it from all angles.
Go McCain. What a strong statement. Not only does it show how strong he is, but it also, once again, shows Obama is a weak candidate. One who doesn’t listen to the needs of our country, but instead chooses to say anything to get the office. This should say something. Omentum: Once again you fail to understand the American language. I do not Hate Obama. I Fear what his plans are for America (and his plans for Israel aren’t looking too good either). His Motives for wanting to Rush himself to be the U.S. President is a matter of Concern for myself and my family. Until Obama is vetted (we all Know Hillary and McCain)…he should go back to the Senate and help his District in Chicago as he ad taken an oath to do so and then abandoned them to “hurriedly” run of President. Something is not right about him. He has not Earned our Trust.
Pardon me, Mr. Obama, but your military inexperience is showing. Thank goodness there are Senators such as John McCain that understand the military and the problems this GI Bill legislation could cause in already understaffed military forces. I was a former Marine Corps recruiter and can see exactly where this would take the forces. Reward those that stay longer- Now there is a good idea!
Comment by JonesH - “but a majority of Americans feel the war was a mistake.”
_________________________________________________________________
No, I don’t believe that are majority of Americans believe the war was a mistake especially at the onset of the war……or within the first three years of the war.
The thought of not having our military forces stationed in the Middle East on the borders of Iran at the present is a real scary thought since we would have to bring our forces out to Iran here soon anyway in order to prevent WWIII with Iran’s full court press for nuclear weapons with the intention of destroying Israel. Regardless of who is President, the USA will enter Iran (100%) in order to make this World a more peaceful place and even the far lefters know this in their own hearts and mind eventhough they don’t want to admit it.
I would go as far as to say that all Americans, all Europeans, Russians and Chinese….and especially Iran know that we are going into Iran here soon despite the fact that most people don’t want to face reality. So it’s time to get behind the cause, it’s time to put a President such as McCain in office who can stand up to the task at hand and get behind our young men and women and take care of this festering Iranian problem once and for all before it’s too late!
But for anyone to deny that Iran is a problem for, not only the USA, but the entire World is living with their head in the sand and anyone who is hiding this isn’t going to solve the problem of the Iranian nut jobs who have gone mentally wild. Allowing the Iranians to have a nuclear bomb is the equivalant of handing a 12 year old a set of keys to a car with a bottle of Jack Daniels as it’s reckless.

Call them what you want Doomster, but words do have meaning. But you can’t change the actual definition of immigration so as to imply it has legal connotations no matter how hard you try.

“Illegal mexicans flooding into our country by the millions
is the most profound tragedy facing our country today.
Liberals call this immigration. Mexico actually enforces”
It is, by definition, immigration! It’s illegal, but by definition, it’s still immigration! Do you not own a dictionary?

I cannot force you to see the distinction I am (obvious to everyone else) trying to make between
order and chaos.

Also,
Sen. McCain’s bill would be keep the ancient pay procedures of the current GI Bill. Currently, payments are made to veterans at the end of every month while enrolled in college. Considering tuition payments are due at the beginning of the semester, it’s a pretty, I mean really, stupid idea.
Sen. Webb’s bill would provide payments in one lump sum at the beginning of each semester. Ahhhh, common sense finally prevails.

That is soooooo important.
Try getting the actual point.
You are much too interested in minute peripheral non-issues.
“The thought of not having our military forces stationed in the Middle East on the borders of Iran at the present is a real scary thought since we would have to bring our forces out to Iran here soon anyway in order to prevent WWIII with Iran’s full court press for nuclear weapons with the intention of destroying Israel.”
I don’t necessarily agree that we need to invade Iran to be successful. If Iran continues down it’s current path I think that air raids would probably be much more effective, and would cause considerably less damage to our reputation among the people of Iran, who are already dissatisfied with their country’s current rule.
JonesH -
As long as you understand the importance of not pulling out the military back due to the Iranian problem then great.
We will being going into Iran soon and it’s time for everyone in the USA to get behind the idea. We need a strong President during this time.
ps- F*** all the illegal aliens.
JohnsH, my focus was that most of the best US presidents have served in active military. Their sacrifices had emboldened their spirits of patriotism and love for our country!. They had been successful in most of their achievements that made our country great. We have enjoyed our freedom because of them. There were also great US presidents that did not have active military service like Franklin D. Roosevelt. But he was in favor of the US military. He supported and defended the Armed Forces of the United States.
Unlike Obama, he will pull out the troops in Iraq from day 1 if in case he wins the presidency, without knowing the consequences. He will talk to Iran pres, Hugo Chavez, Castro, Syria and North Korea without preconditions. Those great presidents I had mentioned never did that.
Vote Senator McCain, he will protect us from the terrorists! Thank you.

Where’s the proof? Or, are you “assuming” what McCain’s bill “would” be????
Immigration vs migration
Order vs chaos
Legal vs criminal
Hmm…I left a lengthy post but it never showed up.
As a Marine who has had to deal with the bureaucracy of the current GI Bill and has racked up close to $60,000 in student loans, let me make this clear:
MCCAIN IS WRONG ON THIS ISSUE!!!
McCain’s bill would still leave the average veteran with almost $20,000 in student loans over the course of a four-year degree. Maybe there is a reason why EVERY major veteran service organization has endorsed the Webb bill???
If Sen. McCain took the time to listen to veterans’ issues he would be on our side on this one.
I said immigration reform is currently a splintered cause. You responded by saying:
“We don’t have a problem with immigration. Immigration is a legal process by definition.”
You never actually replied to my point. You just went off on an ill-informed tangent. And I’m the one who won’t stick to the issue?
I have researched both bills extensively. Sen. McCain has said himself he opposes the Webb bill because new procedures for payment would have to be implemented and his bill would simply increase the payment amount and be dispersed under current(ancient) procedures.
Have you ever tried attending college where tuition is due before classes begin but you receive payments on a monthly basis?
Try it sometime.
