McCain: Obama doesn’t understand “basic realities” of world
Chicago, IL — Sen. McCain continued his assault on Sen. Obama’s foreign policy experience, arguing today that the Democratic front-runner has ” very serious deficiencies for an American president to possess.”
“Senator Obama claimed that the threat Iran poses to our security is “tiny” compared to the threat once posed by the former Soviet Union. Obviously, Iran isn’t a superpower and doesn’t possess the military power the Soviet Union had. But that does not mean that by any stretch of the imagination, that the threat posed by Iran is insignificant,” McCain said Monday responding to comments Obama made yesterday in Oregon. “The biggest national security challenge the United States currently faces is keeping nuclear weapons out of the hands of terrorists. Should Iran acquire nuclear weapons, that danger would become very dire, indeed. They might not become a superpower, but the threat the Government of Iran poses is anything but ‘tiny.’”
Making the case that the U.S. should engage current adversaries like Presidents Reagan and Kennedy diwth the Soviet Union, Obama told an audience Sunday that that countries like Iran, Cuba and Venezuala pose a “tiny” threat compared to that of the U.S.’s cold war enemy.
“I mean think about it. Iran, Cuba, Venezuela - these countries are tiny compared to the Soviet Union. They don’t pose a serious threat to us the way the Soviet Union posed a threat to us. And yet we were willing to talk to the Soviet Union at the time when they were saying we’re going to wipe you off the planet. And ultimately that direct engagement led to a series of measures that helped prevent nuclear war, and over time allowed the kind of opening that brought down the Berlin Wall. Now, that has to be the kind of approach that we take,” Obama said. “You know, Iran, they spend one-one hundredth of what we spend on the military. If Iran ever tried to pose a serious threat to us, they wouldn’t stand a chance. And we should use that position of strength that we have to be bold enough to go ahead and listen.”
During his remarks before the National Restaurant Association, McCain also continued his criticism of Obama’s statement that he would hold talks with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad without preconditions, saying the statement “betrays the depth of Senator Obama’s inexperience and reckless judgment. Those are very serious deficiencies for an American president to possess.”
“An ill conceived meeting between the President of the United States and the President of Iran, and the massive world media coverage it would attract, would increase the prestige of an implacable foe of the United States, and reinforce his confidence that Iran’s dedication to acquiring nuclear weapons, supporting terrorists and destroying the State of Israel had succeeded in winning concessions from the most powerful nation on earth. And he is unlikely to abandon the dangerous ambitions that will have given him a prominent role on the world stage,” McCain said.
“An unconditional summit meeting with the next American president would confer both international legitimacy on the Iranian president and could strengthen him domestically when he is very unpopular with the Iranian people. It is likely such a meeting would not only fail to persuade him to abandon Iran’s nuclear weapons; its support of terrorists and commitment to Israel’s extinction, it could very well convince him that those policies are succeeding in strengthening his hold on power, and embolden him to continue his very dangerous behavior,” McCain said, adding “the next President ought to understand such basic realities of international relations.”
***UPDATED 7:45pm***Obama responded during a speech in Billings, MT:
“So John McCain, he’s said, ‘Oh, Obama doesn’t understand the threat of Iran.’ I understand the threat of Iran. But what I know is that the Soviet Union had the ability to destroy the world several times over, had satellites spanning the globe, had huge masses of conventional military power - all directed at destroying us. And so I made it clear for years that the threat from Iran is grave, but what I’ve said is that we should not just talk to our friends, we should be willing to engage our enemies as well, that’s what diplomacy is all about. So let me absolutely clear. Iran is a grave threat. It has illicit nuclear program, it supports terrorism across the regions and militias in Iraq. It threatens Israel’s existence and denies the Holocaust.”
“But this threat has grown primarily - and this is the irony - the reason Iran is so much more powerful now then it was a few years ago, is because of the Bush-McCain policy of fighting an endless war in Iraq and refusing to pursue direct diplomacy with Iran. They’re the ones who have not dealt with Iran wisely. Make no mistake - Iran is the single biggest beneficiary of a war in Iraq that should have never been authorized and should have never been waged. Thanks to George W. Bush’s policies, Iran is now the greatest threat to the U.S. and Israel in the Middle East in a generation and John McCain wants to double down on that failed policy.”

“The next President ought to understand such basic realities of international relations.”
Bwahahahahahahaha. Too true. Seriously though, Barack looks so stupid every time he has to talk about something other than hope and change. He really doesn’t have a clue on foreign affairs. I doubt he will have much more to say about anything outside of the US until November so I hope McCain keeps bringing up this example.
I had a friend in graduate school who prided himself in the fact that he could “think outside of the box.” He could, and he was very smart as well. The problem was that he could think outside the box but he usually didn’t know what was in the box, why it was there, or how it worked. Obama is like this guy. He has some great ideas on how the world SHOULD be but he has no clue for WHY the world is the way it is right now.
Keep it up John!
You don’t need to go negative, you just need to get Barack to talk without the teleprompter!
Obama best understands the world of Chicago Politics…and his community organizing experience…you know fixing pot holes and windows in people’s houses….
He knows alot about politics in Kenya…he supported his cousin Odinga, who when he lost his bid for the Presidency, he encited violence against Christians, they locked over 40 women and children in a church and burned it to the ground…Now they have brockered a power sharing government and Odinga has signed an agreement to implement Sharia Law…Obama campaigned and supports his radical LOU Mulsim family in Kenya…
google” Odinga, Obama, ODM, Kenya” there is alot of reporting on this except in the MSM…
How has Obama come this far??? He clearly is not Presidential material…the fact is he gives us all a good glimpse at all the losers we have elected into office…mostly democrats…what has happened to that party…
I am convinced the reason that the dem party now has these super delegates is so they can put in office who they want…because a large majority of the party’s following is uneducated these days and is just looking for what the country will do for them, or they are radical liberals…
What happened to Kennedy’s “ask not what…” idea?
And the supers…what is their thinking??? Our world is changing and they want to entrust this inexperienced, untruthful, unloyal, side stepping, liberal as our president…really what is up that part of this country and many of it’s so called leaders are so blind??
It is critical to our future that our next leader stand strong behind this country and protect…critical they understand the dynamics in the world…and critical that the Lord is their boss.
Obama is NOT QUALIFIED to lead our country and keep us safe! McCAin has the experience and knowledge of foreign policy. Let THEM DEBATE.
Obama had to wait for his speech to be written on foreign policy so as not too look foolish.
The party leaders had to defend their WEAK candidate until his speech was written for him
Always a speech - delivered from the teleprompter - very staged - all for show. Let’s have a Q/A session!
The heck with the democrats. I knew I shouldn’t have left the communist party.
“How has Obama come this far???”
He’s an eloquent Black liberal with ties to islam, domestic terrorists and anti-Americans. Not to mention he is a lawyer. What’s not for a liberal to love? This guy is the embodiment of what liberals think America should be. So what if he doesn’t have experience or wisdom, that’s what his cabinet is for.
He will be a lousy president if elected but the important thing is that his picture will look really good hanging between Bush and Romney’s 20 years from now.
Ha! this cracked me up. John really puts it well by saying “basic reality”.
Obama is clearly not qualified despite his capability to pull general words of bull—- out of his butt. I’ll give him the one and only kudos that he knows how to read a teleprompter. the fact that he can get a crowd really going with his generalized, popular issue complaint speeches qualifies him to be a cheerleader not president. talk is cheap. we dont need someone who decides its best to wear the flag only when its popular. we need john mccain.

I agree with ou Haley, Dick Morris is a fat bore.

He didn’t understand Ayers , or Farrakhan, Odinga, Khalidi, Hamas, Brzeznski, Auchi, Rezko, Meeks, Nation of Islam could be a problem either!

McCain’s foreign policy experience? Please. The guy can’t even remember who the Sunni and Shia are–even with Joe “I wanna be your VP” Lieberman there to correct him again and again.
The democrat primary was full of drama, but Obama and McCain will be hilarious. I can not image a 71 year old competing with a 47 year old, mentally nor physically. The cycle of life is a process no one can dodge. From birth till about 24 you are a child, from 25 till about 65 you are an adult, starting at 65 and up you revert back to a child, some do better than others but the fact is “it happens.”
Panama John is too old. We don’t need another Ronald “is this my own dork or a pickle?” Reagan in there having alzheimers moments as president. Regan’s own handlers would even let him out of sight during his 2nd term for fear he’d make some stupid statement everyone would hear.
“President Obama” should hold his Iranian talks in the “Jimmy Carter American Embassy” in Iran and maybe he can get his friend Anton “Tony” Rezko to the the financing for it.

Sorry folks, while I could NEVER vote for Obama, I can not vote for McCain either. I’ve heard his stance on Cap and Trade, that global warming BS, his once too many trips across the isle, his lack of leadership in Immigration Issues to the benefit of Illegals…
I’m done, I either write in Mitt Romney, or vote for one of the many independants that will be on the ballot…..
NO FAITH IN MCCAIN 08
How curious it is that McCain can say that Obama “does not understand”. That is the subtle racism that has been injected into this race that has made people sick. If he were not black, I will bet that would have been phrased differently. And the reason that Obama can get over 90% of the black vote is that black people can see it too being experienced in recognizing it. I cannot see how an old man like McCain can say that a highly educated (More than McCain) man cannot understand something and HE can understand. If he would show a little more respect in his comments, someone might listen to him but the fear that he will possibly get beat in the election leaves him no choice but to inject hidden racism in his comments. But we are aware of it-believe me.
Carl Rove….Release that video of Michelle Obama ranting against “WHITEY” at the Trinity of H*LL!!!!
Do us all a favor before we end up being stuck with the racist Obama’s!!!!! Carl Rove….Do you want Obama to be your next President????? Do whats right and do it now!!!!!
Serious customers like Iran, Syria, Libya, al-Sudan and the Taliban can not be underestimated. But the USSR conducted terror operations all over western Europe and insurgency revolutions in places like Angola, Ethiopia and Nicaragua. The only thing that differentiates the Iranian axis from the USR is the fact that this is less territory to deal with, the times and the character of the US Americans.
It would have been far easier for the US to act agressively against these states in 2002 but we did not. We also did not full act against USSR because they were equal to our own military strenth and any show down would have ended badly. In 2002 a combined US “totally military war mobilzed nation” with an active armed force of 10-15 million could have discontinued any possiblity of an Iranian terror war anywhere ever again.
John Kerry stated that we as a country should fight against terrorists until they are a nusiance. Well we have been on very limited terms and they are more frightful now for one reason only. More than half of this nation’s young men of fighting age were far too tenderhearted to fight anyone except in court or “whine on line.” Lets face America the “chickens” really have come to roost. And the Iranians and other international terrorist organizations know it. Again it all goes to character.
Since we never fully acted against Iran’s military appartus and because we did not obliterate this axis’s weapons developement platform the tweenies of the 2000’s are left to do so, but likely not all.
The tweenies of the 2000’s would prefer to talk their way out of fight. And guess what, taling to terrorsts only convinces them it is safe to attack the US. But it is my guess that some of those same
anti-republican, hate America firsters do not really have a problem with that. Thats what makes these times different than the 1980’s.
I do not have much hope for this nation anymore. And it wont matter who sits in 1600 Pennsylvania Aveue—it just wont.

As a TRUE conservative, I don’t want either one of these luny toons running this country. One is a Republican who campaigns with a democrat at his side and wants to give amnesty to illegal aliens and believes in the global warming hoax and the other is a Democrat who wants to sit down for tea with our enemies and who’s answer for EVERYTHING is to raise taxes. I almost want Obama to win so that way when he totally messes everything up in this country the people will beg for a conservative Republican to fix things.
When I say conservative Republican, I don’t mean Bush. I mean someone who will control and reduce wasteful government spending, lower our taxes, and support drilling for oil off the coast of florida and in anwar and will NOT succomb to the Al Gore’s of the world when it comes to global warming (or cooling, which one is it this month??).

Who is going to fix the mess we are in now, that was created by a conservative?
Most Americans understand that open dialogue does not constitute giving away the kitchen sink. I believe that whoever the president elected in November must speak to and present a strong voice to our enemies or enemies of our friends. To attack Barak because he said that we need to sit and talk to our enemies (Iran) is not weakness, but Iran need to know exactly where we stand on foriegn policy and we need to make an attempt through diplomacy to reduce the tension. However, the president will go with the full force of America’s might behind him. However, the world will know that we attempted to negoiate an acceptable settlement. I believe that Barak Obama is smart enough to place the right people in foriegn policies jobs to convey the right message. The president does not make foreign policy, he only enforces the will of the people. So, lets stop trying to manipulate and capitalize on fear, and find real solutions for the world. He is bold enough to say it publically and not use back door diplomacy.

The Year of the ‘Sweetie’?
By Susan Estrich
Have we gone from the “Year of the Woman” to the “Year of the Sweetie”?
So it appears. It’s not the “sweetie” part that gets me, and I suspect a lot of other women. It’s the concern that, not to sound trite, some of the guys out there, maybe including the probable Democratic nominee for President, just don’t “get it.”

I am sick of you Obama people race baiting. If Obama wins the nomination it will be because he is black and because they have used race baiting during the whole campaign.
OBama and Michelle going to a racists, anti-american church for 20 years should tell people all they need to know about the Obamas.
“F. U. Middle America”
In all the news about Obama blaming his Kentucky loss on Fox News, he all but gives away the game regarding his distain for middle America. And we should not ignore it.
First it was the gun toting Jesus lovers. Now it’s this:
“What it says is that I’m not very well known in that part of the country,” Obama said. “Sen. Clinton, I think, is much better known, coming from a nearby state of Arkansas. So it’s not surprising that she would have an advantage in some of those states in the middle.”

So yesterday, Obama could not classify Iran as a serious threat.
If Iran ever tried to pose a serious threat to us, they wouldn’t stand a chance.”
Today, however, Iran is a grave threat.
“Iran is a grave threat. It has an illicit nuclear program. It supports terrorism across the region and militias in Iraq. It threatens Israel’s existence. It denies the Holocaust,” he said.

Wingnut Logic 101
It’s fair game to go on and on and on quoting (inaccurately*) one candidate’s wife when she uses slightly clumsy phrasing to describe her pride that the US (well, most of it) has moved to the point where a black man can be a credible candidate for president.
It’s way out of bounds to mention that another candidate’s mega-rich wife should be disclosing her financial affairs, that she was a hopeless junkie who stole drugs from her own charity, or that her husband tried to squash the whistleblowing doctor by falsely claiming he was a blackmailer.
*Michelle Obama said it was the first time she felt REALLY proud of her country, not simply proud - a small but crucial difference in meaning.
Let’s face it, if you are on the right you would rather nuke a nation and worry about them later and if you are on the far left you would rather talk to them before nuking them. Hmm, what one seems more rational than the other?
I don’t see any harm in talking to any nation with a problem as long as you go in with your chest sticking out. In every single aspect in life COMMUNICATION is key, and the lack of COMMUNICATION has lead to a ton of issues. Ignoring a country with problems does little to solve them, and will eventually end in war. Maybe that’s what most people want though. Big $ for some in war.*sigh*
Obama is defending his statement that the President should talk directly with hostile foreign leaders citing the Cuba missle crises as an example how then President Kennedy talked directly to the leader of Russia. I remember that incident a little differently than possibly Obama has read in his history books. It was called the Cuba missle crises because it was a world crises. The entire American and allied battle force was on world wide high alert. For three very long days the entire world was holding its breadth to see if the Russians would back down.
Obama needs to learn his history, and understand the President does not just “talk” with anyone or any country unless he is ready to use the entire force of the American military power against that country.
Smart President’s use the State department to do their bidding. That’s what the State department is there for, along with people like Jesse Jackson and Jimmy Carter and hundreds of peace organizations around the world.

Obama sounds very realistic, Iran has no real military power compared to Russia, their equipment is dated and have a hard time to get parts. Furthermore Iran hasn’t attacked anyone for over 200 years. Disappointed in rhetoric of McCain, used to like him, but his many reverseals are getting uncomfortable, plus too much alike Bush - tax cut, trade agreements, Iraq and healthcare. If shifts real, or pandering or cozying up, whatever but just too many flip flops.
A vote for Panama Juan McSame = 4 more years of the FAILED BUSH ADMINISTRATION.
Idiot. I was not discussing the tense of her remarks, which make no difference whatsoever, but the fact that you wingnuts leave the ‘really’ out of the quote, implying that she despised America until that moment.
“For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country.”
Instead of hanging your hat on silly semantic arguments, try growing up and facing reality. You and your propagandist friends at Fox are in for a desperately disappointing six months. The Republican party is over.
Even the GOP is trying to get on the anti-Bush, pro-change bandwagon.
But their newest bogus slogan “change you deserve,” just so happens to be the trademarked slogan of the antidepressant Effexor. How telling that is.

I bet NONE of you know the “basic reality” of what is really going on in the middle east,
but you sure will side with whoever seems to makes any kind of sense.
THAT’S THE POINT. Republicans take complex issues, and turn it into sound bites for us all to argue over. They employ psychologists, linguist specialists and marketers to agonize over every single word that is leaked to the media. The words are designed to IMPLY things that aren’t true. Their public comments have nothing to do with “reality”, they have everything to do with preying on the ignorance of the american public.
1. The U.S. is already talking to Iran. This whole point is moot.
2. Saying that we “give them power by agreeing to talk to them” is exactly the kind of middle-school politics that has made the U.S. LESS SAFE in the past 8 years. People, we are grown ups, not 7 year old kids. By saying this John is playing right into the “common folks’ view of the world.
FACT: Iran has a STRONGER POSITION OF POWER now that Iraq has no leadership. LOOK IT UP
Try cbc news, or the news in the UK to get a real sense of what is ACTUALLY HAPPENING IN THE WORLD.
3. If talking is so bad, why did Bush beg Iran to produce more oil TWICE this year?
The iranians are not idiots, they are normal people like you and me. In fact, they are MORE INFORMED over these issues than the average american. Most of the them know very well the reason for the U.S. to talk with them, and they sure as hell won’t see it as any kind of weakness.
This is the reason your country is going in the toilet.
GET INFORMED
Stop voting without the FACTS.
Please.
I am TOTALLY in LOVE with BaLACK Hussien OBlahBlah’s purple lips.

reading these comments is like reading the graffit on the wall in a middle school.
“i know i used my common sense….my energy stocks are making a boat load of cash !!!!
and no…you socialist are not entitled to my wealth…i am smart enough to know how to hide it from you latte’ drinking linguine’ spine limousine liberals…who is smart now moron !!”
Is this the kind of animosity you want in your country?
Everyone is a stereotype?
Pretty sad.
FOX

It’s not my remarks that are at issue, idiot. It’s Michelle Obama’s and your childish attempts to construe them as something evil and unpatriotic. Nuances of meaning don’t actually compare well with facts about thieving junkies who won’t disclose their finances.
By the way, WTF is a juvy?
Oh my heavens, what a coincidence - there’s another Wascally Wingnut Wival on the page.
Even stupider than ExT as well!
If Sen. Obama is so sure he would like to meet Hezbollah without preconditions, I would expect his VP nomination to be a very desired position.
Hey Mark Boise:
John McCain is on the record (ON VIDEO) back in 2006, when Hamas was first DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED in Gaza, having said we need to negotiate with them since they were the ones now in power.
We do need to talk with Hamas. Not because they’ve been classified a terrorist group, but because they’re a fairly elected government.
I think people can tell pretty easily when someone else gets on here and writes false posts and attributes them to me. Just follow my line of thought through this feedback section. The racist stuff is by someone else.
I think it’s pretty clear I do not support the Bush administration or John McSame. I support the Democratic candidate, whoever that may be. If Clinton won the nomination I’d vote for her as well as Obama. I do this simply because the GOP brought us Bush/Cheney and they have failed miserably in office.
Has Obama gone completely wacko?
Telling the American people not to speak of his anti-American wife is insulting and a huge mistake. She has spoken out against our country. She is fair game! He has no right to say, “Lay off my wife”. We don’t need a dictator!
Complaining about President Bush will not get him votes. Obama is offering to “debate” President Bush — President Bush is not running for President — Hillary Clinton and John McCain are!!!
There are lots of us hard-working, blue collar Americans who don’t want to raise taxes! Obama does!
We don’t have 57 states! But we should include Florida and Michigan.
What country is Obama running in?
Don’t forget all his ties to terrorists and anti-Americans (including his wife)!
He is a cry-baby and a whiner! Keep his finger away from that button! He’s not strong enough to stand up against our enemies. He says he will meet with them “without preconditions” — doesn’t sound like he plans to protect us! Will they take us from “within”? Don’t forget 9/11?
If OJ were running as the Democratic candidate, sure beats the GOP.
