McCain campaign issues lobbying challenge to Obama
SAVANNAH, GA — Facing repeated questions Monday about campaign transparency and adviser ties to lobbyists, the usually free-wheeling John McCain showed almost machine-like message discipline.
Below is a taste from the press conference this afternoon in Savannah:
Question: What was the impetus for the new lobbying policy?
McCain: “We have enacted the most comprehensive and most transparent policy concerning lobbyist activities and I challenge Senator Obama to adopt a similar policy.”
Question: Is this an inside-the-beltway issue? Do the American people care?
McCain: “It’s not so much that as we wanted to make sure there was an effective and comprehensive and transparent policy towards lobbyist, the most comprehensive and transparent of any presidential campaign in history, and I challenge Senator Obama to adopt the same policy.”
Question: Why did this policy take so long and are you confident we will see no more departures from your campaign?
McCain: “We have enacted the most comprehensive and transparent policy of any presidential campaign in history and I challenge Senator Obama to adopt the same policy.”
All told, by the end of the media availability McCain had described his new lobbyist policy as “comprehensive” seven times, “transparent” five times and challenged Obama to adopt his policy three times. The campaign is currently vetting all staff or lobbying ties after adopting a new policy last week that:
-no staffer can be a registered lobbyist or receive compensation from a lobbying firm.
-part-time volunteers must disclose ties to lobbyists
-no staffer can participate in a 527 or other independent group
-campaign staffers promise not to lobby a future McCain administration.
Camp McCain has seen at least five high-level departures in connection to lobbyist ties in the last couple weeks but advisers say that the new policy should be sufficient in staving off possible conflicts of interest.
Asked today if the American public cares about the issue, campaign senior adviser Charlie Black responded, “hell no.”
“I mean this is complete inside the beltway nonsense. But McCain believes there should be a standard because of his efforts at reform and he laid down a standard and everyone is in compliance,” Black said aboard McCain’s campaign plane Monday. “(The media) are carrying this to absurdity. I mean it’s the same principle the (Campaign Manager) Rick Davis quit lobbying five years ago. It’s like saying Tim Russert is disqualified from running “Meet the Press” because he was once a Democratic political operative. Or George Stephanopoulos. I think you can change professions and unless you did something unethical or criminal, your past profession should not be injected into a candidate’s campaign. That’s absurd, absurd.”
(((Note that according to the campaign, Black misspoke regarding how long Davis has been out of lobbying. After the DNC jumped on the comment this afternoon with evidence from a 2006 lobbying contract, McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers told Fox that Black meant to say three years instead of five.)))
Black, who is a former lobbyist but severed ties with his firm earlier this year, also echoed McCain’s challenge for the Obama campaign to disclose all of it’s advisers names and their past lobbying ties.
“Let’s see when you guys go digging into Obama’s lobbyists in his campaign,” Black said. “He doesn’t have a standard or his is certainly not as strong as McCain’s. He’s got lobbyists hanging around all over the place. I know who some of them are. Surely you guys can find ‘em.”

Well, you’ve got to consider what caused McCain to institute this policy and try to spin it as an honesty challenge in the first place. It was because his advisors and campaign people are/were so tied in with lobbyists.
And lobbyists and influence buying are one of the things Americans hate most about their government. So McCain’s really just trying to deflect criticism of his own lobbying ties and make it look like he’s doing it for some reason of honesty.
If he were so honest he would have had all those people in his campaign to begin with. It’s his problem, not Obama’s.

I have to agree with you….Obama could not have won without Hillary. Her political gang-bang, attacking Obama from all sides, showed how strong and high in integrity he truly is. Senator John McCain’s wife, Cindy McCain, has decided not to release her tax returns — not now and not in the future. In the interest of transparency and to support her husband’s frequent calls for clean and open government, she should rethink that decision.
Since their marriage in 1980, Mrs. McCain, the daughter of a multimillionaire Anheuser-Busch distributor, and her husband have filed separate tax returns. In April, Mr. McCain released his own returns, but just for the last two years — a paltry nod to openness. When you quote “Dreams of my Father” passages you forgot to mention that they were written to explain his adolescent views of being bi-racial and trying to find where he fit in and how. As a mother of bi-racial adult children I see this conflict. By pointing out those passages you also are not understanding how being raised in an all “white” family would and did effect his views. Of course he didn’t have angst identifying with the “white” side of him, it was all he knew. It was only after he entered a society that only sees the black side of him that he would NEED to discover how to integrate that part of him. His book is a well written, well thought out chapter of his life and struggle with identity. Not a map of his entire life.

I certainly think that Obama’s relationships with lobbyists needs to be examined a little more openly. I did see an article about it once and it compared his campaign people with past or present lobby connections to Clintons and oddly enough Obama had more people on his campaign involved at one time or another in lobbying than she did. I can’t recall the exact numbers but they were pretty large. I was kind of amazed at this due to all his rhetoric about how the lobbyists had better realize that their days are over if he becomes Pres. Political double speak at it’s best. Say one thing and make a deal under the table for something else just don’t let people know.
Just like Obamas under the table deal with the Teamsters union. Telling them that having friends in the WH could certainly help to ease their regulations. If I’m not mistaken the unions have hundreds of lobbyists on Capital Hill. More double speak?
