Byrd Backs Obama

After losing the Mountain state by more than 40 percentage points, today Obama picked up the support of the state’s senior senator, Robert Byrd. “After a great deal of thought, consideration and prayer over the situation in Iraq, I have decided that, as a superdelegate to the Democratic National Convention, I will cast my vote for Senator Barack Obama for President,” Byrd said in a statement.

The repentant former Ku Klux Klan member said he purposefully waited until after his state’s primary to endorse and praised both Democrats as “extraordinary.”  But, in another sign the Democratic Party is rallying around Obama continued, “I believe that Barack Obama is a shining young statesman, who possesses the personal temperament and courage necessary to extricate our country from this costly misadventure in Iraq, and to lead our nation at this challenging time in history. Barack Obama is a noble-hearted patriot and humble Christian, and he has my full faith and support.

Obama had previously been endorsed by West Virginia’s other senator, Jay Rockefeller, who has appeared on the campaign trail with Obama.

Another old fart not going with the will of the people of his state. Guess he must not be going to run again.

Amazing the way they are jumping on the Obama bandwagon…afraid of being left out I guess. I think it’s amazing that they are so blatantly going against their own constituents. They would certainly not get my vote again if I lived there.

“Another old fart not going with the will of the people of his state.”

What does it tell West Virginians when their elected leaders turn their backs on the will of the people?

Didn’t Barack plead for superdelegates to vote the same way their states did? If he’s not a hypocrite (he is) then he would graciously concede WV’s superdelegates to Clinton. The new era of politics will have to wait another year because Barack has figured out that he can’t have his too-good-to-be-true ideals and win the ultimate prize.

Comment by Edward

Hillary should run as an independent candidate. Obama says he’s for “change” but he can’t change the Democrat party or govt. when there’s so many phonies backing him like Kennedy and Byrd. They are going to want something in return (that’s politics). The only way to get change is for an independent President who’s not tied to either party and the lobbyist groups.

Comment by rwethereyet

Obama has called for unconditional direct talks between the U.S. and Iran, saying the U.S. would be negotiating from a position of strength. He has since modified that call, saying that mid-level meetings would have to set an agenda and criteria before direct talks could be conducted.
********************************
LOL …. Change the word modified above and put in the word flip-flopped. Obama has NO idea how to handle foreign affairs.

Comment by rwethereyet

Byrd is worried about the situation in Iraq????? He should be worried about the situation right here at Home if Obama gets elected. WHAT are these superdelegates thinking???

Comment by Rosa

So elections are not about what the American people want, it’s about what sexist men in power do regardless. They vote for Obama not because they want him in office, it’s because they would rather have a Anti-American man in office than a highly qualified TRUE AMERICAN WOMAN IN OFFICE. WOMEN DISCRIMINATION TO THE CORE!

I never was Obama’s fan, because I knew,he and his wife, both of them are fake, they are arrogant and think America and the American people, own them to be where they are today. They should never go close to the WH,specially to be President and First Lady.

Byrd backs obama BUT his PEOPLE DON”T!!!

The WILL/VOTES of the PEOPLE - COUNT!!

Comment by rwethereyet

Byrd or Bird???? Was that the Bird Obama gave Hillary on national television a few weeks back or was that the Byrd? Media sure brushed That one under the rug. MSNBC went so far as to cut out “the incident” and put it back in at a “different” location in his speech to make it Look like he didn’t flip off a past First Lady of the United States of America. It is AMAZING that “anyone” would vote for a person like that.

Comment by Rudy NYC

This election is going be analyzed for its candidates, the pundits, the media, and most importantly the pubilc’s involvement the entire process thanks to the internet.

I find this to be rather surprising coming from Byrd. I guess he needs DNC dollars for another re-election campaign. Explanation. It looks as if Obama will be the DMX nominee. He must support the party’s candidate in the national election. His state appears to be a steep hill for said candidate. His state’s constituents appear to some of hardest hit by economy, so there’s not a lot of campaign dollars within the state. Byrd needs dollars from outside the state.

Comment by Jo Anne

Another Judas.
His state overwhelmingly voted for Hillary Clinton.
I guess it doesn’t matter what the American voters want!
The DNC has crossed a lot of lines this election.
It doesn’t want Florida, Michigan, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and even Kentucky and Puerto Rico, who have yet to even vote.
Donna Brazile says the “new” Democratic party doesn’t need white, (her word), working class and Latinos.
Bob Beckel said to fox, “If I were Obama, I’d never set my plane down in West Virginia again”!
Bob Beckel is who came up with the idea of Superdelegates!
Who exactly does the DNC need in their party if all those I mentioned are booted out!
Reagan was right.
We didn’t leave the Democratic party. “They left us”!

It is ridiculous that these supers and leaders are announcing all this…AND I think the super delegate idea the dems came up with a couple years ago is totally UNCONSTITUTIONAL!!!

Comment by Rudy NYC

Haley Rodman Clemson,
West Virginians need to recognize the fact the HRC had written off WV as unimportant in her master campaign plan to have it all wrapped up on Super Tuesday. Her campaign has really been an embarassment for her. They had no plan past Feb 5. They had no fallback plan to raise additional funds. The campaign thought caucus states as irrelevant, and the manager himself—and on down the line to the candidate—did not even realize that delegates were awarded proportionally.

Comment by Jo Anne

Molly.
That is what I have been trying to tell people.
When the court ruled the DNC a “private entity”, and they could boot Fla and Mi, it changed the DNC forever.
That ruling gives the DNC the authority to boot ALL AMERICAN”S VOTES, if it chooses to!
None of your votes count!
The DNC can and will override the people it pretends to represent!
It is doing it right in front of all of you!
See how terrible they treat Clinton, Fla, Mi, WV. KY, and Pa.???
Look at Richardson, Kennedy, Kerry, Byrd.
They all went against their own constituents!

angry white person,
I mean Obama might not be their kind of person, and Byrd used to be. The fact still remains that Hillary had written off WV as irrelevant long before the WV primary, long before Super Tuesday on Feb 5.

I am one who has been hurt and dissatisfied with Bush’s econmic policies, and I hope the next president will do better. Bush’s policies have not helped the people of WV, but tended to favor corporate America and those with 6 figure incomes.

Bush’s gift to taxpayers in the summer of ‘04 gave those with incomes over $150k a full 8% of the gross income back. Not an 8% cut in their taxes, but 8% of their gross income. 30-35% of my gross goes toward federal taxes. My gift amount to less than 0.004% of my gross pay of $45k at the time.

Comment by Jo Anne

After spitting on West Virginia, Florida, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Puerto Rico, working class white people and Latinos, are you all still willing to hand your vote over to any member of the DNC!
Your right to vote your choice is the most precious of all your rights. You should protect it at all costs.
The DNC has stripped two states full of Americans and disregarded many more, without actually telling them to their faces they were stripped!
The DNC has slapped every American who went to a poll and voted for one of their candidates!
Both Clinton and Obama supporters should be outraged at the complete disregard the DNC is showing to the American voters!
None of your votes matter th the DNC.
They will choose and you can all take a hike!
Just look at what they are doing to the voters in those states I mentioned.
Your votes aren’t worth a hill of beans to the DNC!
Nice job Howard Dean!

This is tough for me. The last 6 years under Bush have been hard. I am unemployed, so I blog half the day and look for a job. I don’t think I can survive another 4 years of Bush economics. Clinton does appear likely to “win” the nomination. McCain has no economic policy, except Bush’s failed policies. Obama is unproven in far too many ways, but comes across as more likeable on the international scene than McCain.

McCain is too close to Bush on the international stage. Obama wants to pull out troops. McCain wants to do it slowly. If McCain feels pullout is a diplomatic disaster, that means the US is no longer the diplomatic super-power is used to be. The sad part is that McCain could be right.

I lost my job because they closed the local military base to pay for this war in Iraq.

It is apparent that the democratic powers that be, have pushed Hillary out of the democratic party, Byrd is a good example. It would be a disgrace to her and her backers if she took the offer for a spot on the ticket for VP, after all the nomination has actually been stolen from her, by the party executives & the main stream media. I am a republican and don’t agree with Mccain & though I don’t agree with Hillary on everything, I feel she should run on an independent ticket. We need someone to keep the U.S from being taken over by radical MUSLIUMS. I think her runnig independently would stop that from happening. She has run her campagin, without exposing Obama for the Radical MUSLIUM that known information has pointed out that he surely is one. She has played nice to long. This has allowed others to do Obamas dirty work against her just as he did to competion in Illinois Obama has worked behind the scenes to destroy her campaign while preaching to have a clean campaign . Hillary & Mccain have fell in lock step with his clean campaign talk, while he destroys them in the shadows. WAKEUP.

The problems and signs of things to come were there prior to 2006. Democrats simply gave Bush the same that the Republicans gave Clinton during his final years in office. But, Bush still has the veto power. Those are the facts, not spin.

Bush has not made us safer, which I define as reducing the threat to national security. There are far more threats today than in 2006, which had more than 2004, which had more than 2000. Those are the facts, not spin
