Romney Praises McCain at the NRA
Louisville, KY–
Joining his former rival today, Governor Mitt Romney also addressed the crowd of thousands at the NRA annual convention. Even though he did not share the stage with Senator John McCain he praised him and went after McCain’s democratic rival, Senator Barack Obama, “This is a person who has not stood with us on second amendment issues. He is a man who I’m afraid of who he would put in place a court. It would not be a court that would stand up for the issues that are so dear to us.”
He told the NRA members that McCain might not be perfect, but he’s right on the issues that matter to them:
“Now I know everyone here doesn’t agree with John McCain on every issue. I didn’t. I ran against him! But, I believe that he is right on issue after issue that counts. He is right about fighting global jihad. He’s right about winning in Iraq. He’s right about keeping government small and taxes low and he’s right about the constitutional rights that were put in our constitution by your founding fathers. Barack Obama is one of those liberals who thinks he know what the founders would have written if they were alive today,” Romney said, “And I prefer a president like John McCain who believes in the plain words they actually wrote. “
It would be hard to imagine that praise just over three months ago when they were in a bitter battle for the GOP nomination. For Romney’s address today he revived most of his stump speech that he gave on the trail—sticking with many of the same issues and stories that he told crowds during his campaign.
During his failed battle for the nomination, Romney tried to woo gun owners by saying he was a lifelong NRA member—instead it turned out that he had just had wielded a gun at some “small varmints.”

Bush presidency, as well as various economic stimulus plans, critics often label the measures as “tax cuts for the rich.” Yet a new report from the National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA) says the Bush tax cuts made the tax code more progressive, no matter how progressivity is measured. In fact, the report concludes that every major tax change (Republican or Democrat) over the past two decades has increased the share of taxes paid by the wealthiest Americans.
“It is politically popular to say that tax cuts benefit the wealthy,” said Michael D. Stroup, a Stephen F. Austin University economist who authored the NCPA report. “The accusation does not match the reality.”
The progressivity of the tax system can be measured in four ways: (1) the share of taxes paid by different income groups, (2) the share of income paid in taxes, (3) the change in taxes relative to the change in income over time, and (4) a comparison of inequality of income to the inequality of taxes over time.
Looking at the first three measures, the report found that:
The top 1 percent of income earners pay more than one in every three dollars the IRS collects in taxes. From 1986 to 2004, the total share of the income tax burden paid by the top 1 percent of earners grew from 25.8 percent to 36.9 percent, while the total share of the tax burden paid by the bottom half of earners fell from 6.5 percent to only 3.3 percent.
During the same period, the percentage of income the top 1 percent of tax filers paid in federal income taxes rose from 18.3 percent to 19.6 percent. By contrast, the percentage of income the bottom fifth of tax filers paid in federal income taxes dropped from 0.4 percent to zero.
The income share of the top 1 percent rose 7.7 percentage points, from 11.3 percent to 19 percent, while their income tax burden rose even more, by 11 percentage points, from 26 percent to 37 percent.
The final measure compares the inequality of income to the inequality of taxes paid over time among all income groups. This measure is the “progressivity index,” and is a numerical representation between 0 and 1. The closer the index value is to 1, the more progressive the tax system. For example:
From 1990 to 2000, the progressivity index increased from 0.476 to 0.617, during a period where marginal tax rates increased but capital gains tax rates fell.
From 2001 to 2004, under George W. Bush’s tax reforms, the tax progressivity index continued to rise from 0.608 to 0.664.
“Its important when discussing tax reforms to consider how the system reacts, because of the great discretion high earners have in how they earn income and therefore pay taxes,” said Stroup. “Bush’s reforms have helped diminish the income gap between rich and poor, rather than make it worse.”
When Bill Clinton ran for the White House and said he would give tax breaks, you guys said the same thing. I see the country is still doing great.
For those that can’t do math:
That post just showed that the really rich (the top 1% of all earners) paid 36.9% of all taxes.
The bottom 20% of all earners paid ZERO.
The bottom 50% of all earners paid 3.3%.
I am far from being even upper middle class, let alone rich. But I am tired of a bunch of lazy whiners complaining about their tax burden when in reality they pay squat. One out of every five of you pays NOTHING! And yet you demand more. That is called, pride, selfishness, and coveting they neighbors property.
You don’t pay for the military that protects you, the roads that you drive on, or any government programs.

You then run the snipet of Huckabee’s ad saying “Christian Leader” with the words going across emphasizing that the Southern Baptist Convention broke off from mainstream Baptists because of their support for slavery. You then show the clip of Huckabee in South Carolina telling people “where they can stick the flag pole” if they try to take the Confederate flag away. Then cut and play the clip of this “joke”.
With Obama and the DNC willing to call anyone a racist for not voting for him, Huckabee is now a disaster waiting to happen.
Mind you- I do not think that Huckabee is a racist, but that doesn’t matter. The Dems viciously attacked Geraldine Ferraro (one of their own), just think what they would do with Huckabee.
