McCain Addresses the NRA Convention
Louisville, KY–
Senator John McCain went to the National Rifle Association’s annual convention today to court gun owners—and go after his Democratic rival Senator Barack Obama.
McCain made an addition to his prepared remarks to respond to comments Obama made about the Arizona senator today:
“Earlier today, Senator Obama made a few remarks I would like to respond to. I welcome a debate about protecting America. No issue is more important. Senator Obama claimed all I had to offer was the ‘naive and irresponsible belief’ that tough talk would cause Iran to give up its nuclear program. He should know better,” McCain said, “I have some news for Senator Obama: Talking, not even with soaring rhetoric, in unconditional meetings with the man who calls Israel a ‘stinking corpse’ and arms terrorist who kill Americans will not convince Iran to give up its nuclear program. It is reckless to suggest that unconditional meetings will advance our interests.”
Obama’s attack earlier today compared McCain to President Bush and pointed to Bush’s “failed” policies abroad and went after McCain for supporting them. This back and forth all started yesterday when Bush spoke in front of the Israeli parliament and said that politicians that sit down to negotiate with terrorists are suffering from a “foolish delusion.”
Bush denied he was talked about Obama, but it started off a political firestorm which McCain addressed later yesterday. He went after Obama for saying he would sit down and talk with Iranian president Mahmoud Ahjmadinejad, which lead to the continued boiling over today where the Republican nominee-in-waiting went on to question Obama’s judgment:
“It would be a wonderful thing if we lived in a world where we don’t have enemies,” McCain said, “But that is not the world we live in, and until Senator Obama understands that reality, the American people have every reason to doubt whether he has the strength, judgment, and determination to keep us safe.”
McCain didn’t spare Senator Clinton either painting them both as wanting to limit the rights of gun owners, “Let’s be clear. If either Senator Clinton or Senator Obama is elected President, the rights of law-abiding gun owners will be at risk my friends and have no doubt about it. “
McCain also spoke to the crowd about his sometimes testy relationship with the NRA. The group has heavily criticized him in the past, but now he is now trying to woo this powerful conservative lobby. The Democratic National Convention accused McCain of pandering.
“Over the years, I haven’t agreed with the NRA on every issue. I have supported efforts to have NICS background checks apply to gun sales at gun shows,” McCain said, “I do not support efforts by those who seek to regulate them out of existence. But I believe an accurate, fair and instant background check at guns shows is a reasonable requirement.”
He also addressed the controversial issue of campaign finance reform. His bill, McCain-Feingold was strongly opposed by the NRA because they felt that it limited their ability to support pro-gun candidates. McCain explained that he strongly believes that the old system was influencing politicians “to put the interests of ‘soft money’ donors ahead of the public interest. “
The speech ended a week where he mostly focused on the environment. Trying to woo independents concerned with global warming he held an environmental roundtable and even went on a nature walk in Washington State.
Earlier in the day McCain made a stop at a gun store in West Virginia. He didn’t stock up on any guns, but did pick up fishing equipment including a rod and reel, hooks, sinkers, and bait.

According to his supporters, Obama will be the real change in America. WOW, he sounds wonderful, I can hardly wait for all of our troubles to go away. He can simply talk and our problems will be gone. It’s a shame that he wasn’t around for our entire existence as a country…he could of spoken to King George III, he could of spoke to Jeff Davis, he could of spoken the the Archduke Ferdinand, he could of spoken to those two famous leaders of the 20th century, one in Germany, the other the USSR.

Jeff, don’t be an idiot. Obama is not saying that talking will solve all of our problems, but that direct talks should precede other more forceful actions. He has said repeatedly that force/war as a last resort should always be on the table as a deterrent to our enemies.
After Obama is elected, you may start to appreciate his foreign policy practices; of course, its not like we as a country have anywhere to go but up after Mr. Bush’s romp in the White House.
