Obama Campaign Memo: “West Virginia and Obama’s Strong Position in the Race Ahead”

While Hillary Clinton will embrace her West Virginia victory, Barack Obama headed to a state he already won in this Democratic endurance match. The candidate visited Cape Girardeau, Missouri, where he gave a speech on the economy. In his prepared remarks, there was no reference to the Mountain State’s primary and no mention of Hillary Clinton - another sign the campaign is preparing itself for the general election before he has actually secured the nomination.

Today the Obama camp sent out a memo to reporters, where they admitted “there is no question that Senator Clinton is going to win by huge margins in the upcoming primaries in West Virginia today and Kentucky next week.” But the memo went on to say, “With 49 contests behind us and only six to go — including several states where we expect to do well — Barack Obama leads in pledged delegates, contests won, and superdelegates. And for perspective, while 28 pledged delegates are up for grabs this evening, Obama has won the support of 27 superdelegates in the course of just the last week putting him less than 150 total delegates away from clinching the Democratic nomination.”

Despite the campaign’s growing confidence in an Obama nomination, in today’s memo they are still trying to assure  some in the Democratic Party who are skittish about Barack Obama’s chances in the general election as he has not been able to win states made up of white, working class voters such as West Virginia. The lengthy memo then debunks what the campaign described as “five myths about Obama’s support.”

1. The race for the nomination has left the Democratic Party divided

2. The primary has hurt Obama with swing voters and Republicans

3. Obama will not get the support of white voters

4. The campaign has hurt Obama’s standing with women voters

5. Obama cannot win working class voters

RE: West Virginia and Obama’s Strong Position in the Race Ahead

DA: 5/13/08

West Virginia

There is no question that Senator Clinton is going to win by huge margins in the upcoming primaries in West Virginia today and Kentucky next weeks. She has poured resources into both states and she, former President Clinton, and Chelsea Clinton have all campaigned extraordinarily hard there.

The Clinton campaign has already been touting their margins in these states – In fact, Bill Clinton said that Hillary can win West Virginia with 80 percent—and the West Virginia Senate Majority Leader said Clinton needs to win by “80-20 or 90-10.”  And in keeping large margins in perspective, it is worth noting that, while Senator Clinton will win big in West Virginia, Barack Obama won neighboring Virginia by 29 points.

But with 49 contests behind us and only six to go — including several states where we expect to do well — Barack Obama leads in pledged delegates, contests won, and superdelegates. And for perspective, while 28 pledged delegates are up for grabs this evening, Obama has won the support of 27 superdelegates in the course of just the last week putting him less than 150 total delegates away from clinching the Democratic nomination.

Obama’s Strong Position in the Race Ahead

Nationally, Obama is running stronger among Independent voters than any winning Presidential candidate since 1988 and is significantly outperforming Sen. Clinton among these voters as well in general election polling.

To understand a potential general election match-up between Obama and McCain, the only analysis and data that should be considered valid are the current head-to-head National polls rather than extrapolating irrelevant assumptions from exit poll data in Democratic primaries.

And, on the issue of Democratic unity in the Fall, analysts need only consider that in April of 1992, on a night when Bill Clinton won four primaries and was the presumptive nominee, 6 in 10 Democratic primary voters said they wanted another candidate in the race.  Despite this, five months later, Democratic voters were unified behind Clinton and he won his first of two terms in office.

Debunking Five Myths About Obama’s Support

MYTH 1: The Primary has left Democrats divided.

FACT: Democrats are united behind Barack Obama, even more so than Republicans are united behind McCain

ü      May 12 Washington Post poll shows that Obama wins 81% of Democrats in a matchup against John McCain.

ü      Indeed, more Republicans crossover to vote for Obama (15%) than do Democrats for McCain (13%).

·        NOTE: In 1996, Bill Clinton won 84% of Democrats.

MYTH 2: The Primary campaign has hurt Obama with swing voters and Republicans:

FACT: Obama is winning the swing voters against McCain by a wide margin.

ü      Obama holds a 51-42 lead among Independents in the Washington Post poll.

·        NOTE: Clinton loses 46-49 to McCain among Independents.

ü      Not since 1988, when George Bush beat Michael Dukakis 57-43 among Independents, has a candidate won such a large margin among swing voters.

·        In his two victories, Clinton only managed a 6-point margin over the Republican among independents in 1992 and an 8-point margin in 1996.

·        Indeed, no Democrat has won a majority of Independent voters since exit polls were first conducted in 1976.

MYTH 3: Obama cannot perform strongly enough among white voters:

FACT: Obama’s is running as well or better than past Democratic Candidates among white voters.

ü      LA Times (May 8)                    Obama:            41

McCain:           45

ü      Wash Post (May 13):               Obama:            42

McCain:           51

ü      2004 Exit polls:                         Kerry:              41

Bush:                58

ü      2000 Exit Polls:                        Gore:                43

Bush:                54

ü      1996 Exit polls:                         Clinton:             43

Dole:                46

ü      1992 Exit polls:                         Clinton:             39

Bush:                41

Perot:               20

MYTH 4: The race against Clinton has compromised Obama’s position among women:

FACT: Obama has begun attracting the support of a broad coalition of women and is poised to win historic margins.

ü      Wash Post (May 13):               Obama:            54

McCain:           40

ü      New York Times (May 3)        Obama:            47

McCain:           39

ü      NOTE: No Democratic candidate has won women by so large a margin since exit polling was first conducted in 1976. The closest any candidate has come was in 2000, when Al Gore won women 54-43 over George Bush

MYTH 5: Obama cannot win working class voters:

FACT: Obama is already winning working class voters

ü      In the recent LA Times poll, Obama wins every income group under $100,000.

Obama             McCain

·        <$40K:                  43                    35

·        $40K-$59K           43                    40

·        $60K-$100K         51                    42

·        $101K+                 46                    47

ü      According to the Washington Post/ABC poll released today, despite Sen. Clinton’s insistence that she is stronger among white, working-class voters the data shows that Sen. Obama performs nearly as well as she does in the general election. Among white, non-college voters in this poll:

·        Obama vs. McCain  is 40-52

·        Clinton vs. McCain is  44- 52

Well, I am a white, independent, working class female who will never vote for Obama. As for those polls, they are from the Washington Post and New York Times…the newspapers who practically fall over themselves to praise Obama. I do not believe the Democratic party will unite behind Obama. I believe there are more skeletons in his closet that will come out and John McCain will be the next POTUS.

RobinC,

I think it is about perception..they want to create the perception that democrats will fall in line…and hope that becomes reality. It won’t work..I take polls with a grain of salt. They being the Media , pundits, are out of touch…and stuck on themselves, like Americans can’t think for themselves.

Ken Blackwell - Columnist for the New York Sun

It’s an amazing time to be alive in America. We’re in a year of firsts in this presidential election: the first viable woman candidate; the first viable African-American candidate; and, a candidate who is the first front-running freedom fighter over 70. The next president of America will be a first.

We won’t truly be in an election of firsts, however, until we judge every candidate by where they stand. We won’t arrive where we should be until we no longer talk about skin color or gender. Now that Barack Obama steps to the front of the Democratic field, we need to stop talking about his race, and start talking about his policies and his politics.

The reality is this: Though the Democrats will not have a nominee until August, unless Hillary Clinton drops out, Mr. Obama is now the frontrunner, and its time America takes a closer and deeper look at him. Some pundits are calling him the next John F. Kennedy. He’s not. He’s the next George McGovern. And it’s time people learned the facts.

Because the truth is that Mr. Obama is the single most liberal senator in the entire U.S. Senate. He is more liberal than Ted Kennedy, Bernie Sanders, or Mrs. Clinton. Never in my life have I seen a presidential frontrunner whose rhetoric is so far removed from his record. Walter Mondale promised to raise our taxes, and he lost. George McGovern promised military weakness, and he lost. Michael Dukakis promised a liberal domestic agenda, and he lost.
Yet Mr. Obama is promising all those things, and he’s not behind in the polls. Why? Because the press has dealt with him as if he were in a beauty pageant.. Mr. Obama talks about getting past party, getting past red and blue, to lead the United States of America. But let’s look at the more defined strokes of who he is underneath this superficial ‘beauty.’

Start with national security, since the president’s most important duties are as commander-in-chief. Over the summer, Mr. Obama talked about invading Pakistan, a nation armed with nuclear weapons; meeting without preconditions with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who vows to destroy Israel and create another Holo -caust; and Kim Jong II, who is murd_ering and starving his people, but emphasized that the nuclear option was off the table against terrorists - something no president has ever taken off the table since we created nuclear weapons in the 1940s. Even Democrats who have worked in national security condemned all of those remarks. Mr. Obama is a foreign-policy novice who would put our national security at risk.

Next, consider economic policy. For all its faults, our health care system is the strongest in the world. And free trade agreements, created by Bill Clinton as well as President Bush, have made more goods more affordable so that even people of modest means can live a life that no one imagined a generation ago. Yet Mr. Obama promises to raise taxes on ‘the rich.’ How to fix Social Security? Raise taxes. How to fix Medicare? Raise taxes. Prescription drugs? Raise taxes. Free college? Raise taxes. Socialize medicine? Raise taxes. His solution to everything is to have government take it over. Big Brother on steroids, funded by your paycheck.

Finally, look at the social issues. Mr. Obama had the audacity to open a stadium rally by saying, ‘All praise and glory to God!’ but says that Christian leaders speaking for life and marriage have ‘hi jacked’ - hi jacked - Christianity. He is pro-partial birth abortion, and promises to appoint Supreme Court justices who will rule any restriction on it unconstitutional. He espouses the abortion views of Margaret Sanger, one of the early advocates of racial cleansing. His spiritual leaders endorse homosexual marriage, and he is moving in that direction. In Illinois, he refused to vote against a statewide ban - ban - on all handguns in the state. These are radical left, Hollywood, and San Francis co values, not Middle America values.

The real Mr. Obama is an easy target for the general election. Mrs. Clinton is a far tougher opponent. But Mr. Obama could win if people don’t start looking behind his veneer and flowery speeches. His vision of ‘bringing America together’ means saying that those who disagree with his agenda for America are hijackers or warmongers. Uniting the country means adopting his liberal agenda and abandoning any conflicting beliefs.

But right now everyone is talking about how eloquent of a speaker he is and - yes - they’re talking about his race. Those should never be the factors on which we base our choice for president. Mr. Obama’s radical agenda sets him far outside the American mainstream, to the left of Mrs. Clinton.

It’s time to talk about the real Barack Obama. In an election of firsts, let’s first make sure we elect the person who is qualified to be our president in a nuclear age during a global civilizational war.

Subject: Kind of scary, wouldn’t you think Remember–God is good, and is in time, on time — every time

According to The Book of Revelations the anti-christ is:

The anti-christ will be a man, in his 40s, of MUS_LIM descent, who will deceive the nations with persuasive language, and have a MASSIVE Christ-like appeal….the prophecy says that people will flock to him and he will promise false hope and world peace, and when he is in power, will destroy everything. Is it OBAMA??

If Clinton supporters are to rally for her - and not let the media and DNC insiders choose the nominee, lets all help her with calls to Oregon specifically so she can win there. After WV, Kentucky…a win in Oregon would shake the DNC and those super-delegates to the core!

This is very serious and the ramifications of an Obama nomination is that McCain will win in November. Let’s help to keep her candidacy alive. Go to her website hillaryclinton.com and make calls - it is free and it will help.

If ya have some bucks, do that too…..but an upset in Oregon - WOW - now that would be outstanding!

now didn’t Bill get called a racist for saying the same thing about Obama’s win in SC!!!!!!!!!!!

Comment by Anne

Write the DNC, tell them no money until Florida and Michigan are seated now. I am convinced they will not seat the delegates or count the votes until Obama hits whatever magic number they come up with - when in fact, if the delegates were seated and the votes counted - Clinton will be ahead on popular vote and coming in very close with the delegate count. They are stacking the deck against her in my opinion.

The polls out of WV should send the wake up call to the DNC and Obama…….he will loose that state for the General Election among all the rest that it takes to win the White House.

Congratulations to Hillary Clinton on her big win in West Virginia and to you on Fox News for covering this. (I don’t watch the other 2 cable networks anymore. They quite literally make me ill.)

BTW, Hillary Clinton supporters that I know in person and those comments that I see by Hillary supporters on the web, will never vote for Obama. This man and his campaign have tried to turn the Clinton supporters and the Clinton and Bill herself into racists. It’s not “racism.” It’s Obama’s pathetic lack of experience coupled with his wife, his ex-pastor, his supporters and advisers and Obama himself who have said “mean”, insulting, demeaning, obscene comments and outright lies in some cases against Clinton, her family, and her supporters.

Obama is not a candidate who unifies. He divides.

The media and the democratic elite who support Obama have said the “foulest”, most despicable things against our candidate. If Obama should get the nomination, we may “forgive” but “forgiveness does not mean forgetting.” We will vote for the next-qualified candidate - McCain.

McCain we can live with. He has worked across the aisle with many democrats and the man has honor and integrity plus a long record in the senate. In contrast Obama has practically nothing and what little there is, is noteworthy only for it being “scant and lackluster.”

It’s Hillary for us or if the Democrat leaders are “stupid” and “unfair (see dis-enfranchisement of Mi. and Fl.) then it’s McCain for us and we life-long dems. will leave the party in record numbers.

Obama will not win, he will appear as a overconfident young upstart and appear untested in any debate with McCain. He will also be unable to explain his actions now compared to his liberal voting record. I believe the Wirhg t controversy has also shifted many peoples views about him an deven if it is only a 1% change in voter selection to McCain, this would be devastating. I think that in anational election he would lose signifantly, not by a landslide, but much as we saw with Kerry and Bush in 04.

Obama says vote for “CHANGE”….yea right…he’s the only one who is changing…he changes himself to get elected according to what the Obama loving Press reports….

Obama’s now rethinking about Michigan and Florida….he didn’t care to seat the delegates or the vote of the American people earlier so why now?………he needs the delegates now after he snubbed his nose at them earlier. And he says that Hillary is the old Washington…Obama needs to get a reality check….

Give the American people a break.. and quit insulting there intelligence.

I have watched this election process in America clearly for the first time. Both Clinton and Obama are ‘firsts’. Let’s look at a few issues:
1. MI and FL did not follow the rules. Senator Clinton did not mind your votes not being counted when she believed she would would the nomination. Now that Senator Obama is ahead she wants to count. This is not an issue. DO NOT change the rules in mid stream to suit ANYONE.
2. I am sick and tired of RACE!!! We all know that America has secretly hidden its RACIST side for years, but it has finally reared its UGLY face. All white Americans need to walk a day or two in the steps of someone black. I bet your attitude would change. I mean skin color change and then be treated as you treat the black americans for which this country was built on the backs of.
3. If OBAMA is the antichrist then President Bush is his father. Christians, please read your BIBLES and understand. ‘Study to show yourself approved’.
4. Can we continue to minister our self-rightous attitudes to other countries when we are slowly on the demise? How can we as AMERICANS support an establishment that gives aid generously and immediately to others and the people of Louisiana were written off after KATRINA?
5. I am an Obama supporter, however should Senator Clinton win the nomination, I will vote proudly for her and support her just as I would Obama.
6. For you persons that will not vote for Senator Obama should he receive the nomination, then you are what he is trying to defeat, RACISM, SEXISM, POVERTY, all of the things that so many other candidates have forgotten. When has Senator Clinton been on Food Stamps, did Senator Clinton have student loans that had to be paid back, Senator Clinton when to a prestigous university, Bill was a Rhodes Scholar. So why is it that Hillary is the working person choice? It has nothing to do with elitism, it has to do with RACE.

America get it correct. The entire WORLD is looking and laughing!!!

Obama campaigned for that senator, for his reelction in the Senate…and the KKK have endorsed and support Obama. Does that answer you question. Plus I do beleive he has openly apologized for his involvement in the Klan along time ago..

Sassy, i guess your name describes your pseudo personality.

If West Virginians are bigots to the point that they would elect a card carrying klansman to their senate for approximately 50 years, why is it big news that a 50 percent african-american would have a hard time securing votes in such a state?

Now would you care to answer it, or should i just imagine a ’sassy’ response instead?

Obama is not worried about the likes of you that spew hate on this blog. I can’t wait to see what you say when he is your new president. He’s winning in so many places because it’s time to change from white power to American power. The reason he doesn’t win in rural areas is because most rural people are racist. They just wont vote for anyone who isn’t white. If it wasn’t Obama and it was Hernandez or Cho it would be the same story. Time to realize that everyone in this country isn’t white. It’s true, Hillary would be better than Bush but Obama is better than Hillary.

Well, there you have it. It’s no surprise Sen. Clinton wins big in a state with 10% minority voters, low college graduate rates, and a low average income. Sen. Clinton once again fooled the “white working class” (uneducated racist) into not voting for the “black guy”. Congratulations Sen. Clinton and W. Virginia, you both are great examples of what Sen. Obama wants to change about America.

Sen. Obama won the more educated and diverse Virgina.

This is all truth and verified through factcheck.org

Chief sponsor of legislation signed into law in 2006 (PL 109-456) that authorized a 25 percent increase in U.S. assistance to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which has been ravaged by civil wars since its independence from Belgium in 1960 and which received $33-million in fiscal 2006. The law called for a special envoy to help mediate an end to the conflict there and urged the Bush administration to strengthen the United Nations peacekeeping force now operating in parts of the nation. (His only chief sponsorship was for someplace other than Illinois or America - and it turned out to be in the Congo)

Just sponsored a bill in the Seante that will ultimately cost the American citizens .7% of the GNP or 385 Billion dollars to be sent around the world. He has never sponsored nor done anything for here, in the United States.

Obama spent “40 percent of the PAC money, 43 percent to be exact, on Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina politicians.” Bill Clinton said this. It is the truth….although Obama said that he never did this!

“(Obama) did accept donations from lobbyists and PACs and he spent money in this campaign from that, through his political action committee.” Bill Clinton said this.

“I committed to public financing; (Obama) committed to public financing.” John McCain

“”Senator Obama has, in fact, never had a serious Republican challenger.” Hillary Clinton

He (Obama) chairs the subcommittee on Europe. … He’s held not one substantive hearing to do oversight.” Hillary Clinton

“Barack (Obama) has one of his biggest supporters in terms of funding, the Exelon Corporation, which has spent millions of dollars trying to make Yucca Mountain the waste depository.” Hillary Clinton

“Sen. Obama’s chair in New Hampshire is a lobbyist. He lobbies for the drug companies.” Hillary Clinton

You said you would vote against the Patriot Act, then you came to the Senate, you voted for it.” Hillary Clinton

Obama Skips Out On Condemning Left-Wing Attacks On Gen. Petraeus Despite Casting Other ‘Important Votes’ Earlier And Later In The Day.” RNC

Now…just to name a few. See - I look at issues and what the candidate says and then if they follow through. In the case of Reverend Wright - Obama threw him under the bus, the Reverend came out fighting and now they are all back together again at Trinity (Reverend came out retirement and Obama has stayed) Not what he told the people of the US in February.

His little game with Canada regarding NAFTA….and he denied his campaign had spoken with the Canadian government and this his campaign rep was upset saying that the Canadian memo mischaracterized what he had said to them…….so who told the truth there?

Like more reasons? Oh ya - and he has no plans that are viable or that would be able to be implemented….+ did you know his advisors are telling him now to not begin to withdraw troops for at least 18 months???????? Clinton has a plan already to go and intends to implement starting to move troops out in 60 days!!!!

I’ll take the gal with the plans, strength, tenasity, and know-how!!!!!!!!

Where does the Obama camp get their stats? He will not get the working class votes which has been proven. Clinton has won the swing states and the working class vote, Now we are talking more and more as Clinton as a running mate? He still will not get my vote! Enjoy your fixed Democratic presidential bid while it lasts, McCain in November!

Talk about a double standard. The kkk is not done. The Washington Post reported today on the attacks on Obama’s campaign offices and threats in Indiana (Klan Country).

The WV Senator’s involvement in that organization speaks to his beliefs, particularly his belief that people are not created equal. But yet, he is voted into office year after year. Why is this no big deal to whites?

I am thankful that Clinton and Obama do not have the same policies regarding healthcare, financial relief programs and numerous other issues. They are very different in alot of areas.

I think you have missed a major point and I hope your not race baiting

…People who will not vote for Obama….. are NOT voting for Obama….

Because he’s incompetent, not because he’s…… BLACK.

Michigan and Florida voters….as soon as New Hampshire primary was done (they changed their date also), in January 2008 - Clinton was already talking about and petitioning the DNC to count Florida and Michigan votes and seat the delegates. This was long before Super Tuesday.

Obama has steadfastly not wanted the votes or delegates to count. Just ask his attorneys and the DNC.

I don’t care what race Obama is. I am not voting based on race or gender. I am voting for the person I believe will do the best job. That is not Obama. Obama has not managed to bring a nation together. Look at all the people blogging and the nasty comments. If you don’t like Obama or you don’t plan on voting for him, some people call you a racist or stupid. How is that bringing people together.
People that vote for Obama have the right to vote how they want. It is their choice.
I have a choice and it is not Obama.

Yep, the market crashed the last term of Clinton and everyones 401s went to pot.
There are many reasons for houses being foreclosed on. More prevalent in cities where the housing market is real volable.

No gated here. Just bought with in our means and paid it off. As did my kids, thanks to the Bush tax cut. Didn’t run up the credit cards or buy the expensive cars and trucks.

Pam - “When has Senator Clinton been on Food Stamps, did Senator Clinton have student loans that had to be paid back, Senator Clinton when to a prestigous university, Bill was a Rhodes Scholar. So why is it that Hillary is the working person choice? It has nothing to do with elitism, it has to do with RACE.”

Senator Clinton and food stamps??? I suppose one could also say that Senator Obama nor his mother have never been on food stamps. I did some reasearch and even though he claims it in his book, they weren’t available when he claims they were. Check for yourself.

Senator Clinton did have student loans as did Bill Clinton although I believe he also got some scholarships. And????
