McCain Addresses Climate Change

Portland, OR–

Aiming to portray himself as the “greenest” Republican candidate for president in decades, Senator John McCain spoke today on climate change. He made the case that global warming is fact and without the limiting of greenhouse gases using free-market principals it will not just be the environment that will find itself in peril:

“Our economy depends upon clean and affordable alternatives to fossil fuels, and so, in many ways, does our security. A large share of the world’s oil reserves is controlled by foreign powers that do not have our interests at heart. And as our reliance on oil passes away, their power will vanish with it.”

McCain stressed that only the free-market system can help slow climate change, namely using a cap-and trade system:

“And we must do this in a way that gives American businesses new incentives and new rewards to seek, instead of just giving them new taxes to pay and new orders to follow,” McCain said, “The most direct way to achieve this is through a system that sets clear limits on all greenhouse gases, while also allowing the sale of rights to excess emissions. And this is the proposal I will submit to the Congress if I am elected president — a cap-and-trade system to change the dynamic of our energy economy.”

Cap and trade gives companies emission targets or caps and if they produce less emissions then they can trade the surplus. McCain set goals for emissions to be reduced by 60 percent below 1990 levels by 2050, “We will cap emissions according to specific goals, measuring progress by reference to past carbon emissions. By the year 2012, we will seek a return to 2005 levels of emission, by 2020, a return to 1990 levels, and so on until we have achieved at least a reduction of sixty percent below 1990 levels by the year 2050.”

In contrast, McCain’s Democratic rival, Senator Barack Obama has pledged to cut emission rates by 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050.

The presumptive Republican nominee gave a swipe at President Bush for not doing enough to maintain the negotiations that lead to the failure of the Kyoto Protocols:

“I will not shirk the mantle of leadership that the United States bears. I will not permit eight long years to pass without serious action on serious challenges,” McCain continued, “I will not accept the same dead-end of failed diplomacy that claimed Kyoto. The United States will lead and will lead with a different approach — an approach that speaks to the interests and obligations of every nation.”

The speech concluded with the Arizona senator insisting that the United States “cannot alone deal with the threat of global warming,” but did add that America should still negotiate with China and India on the issue of climate change and if an agreement can not be reached then America has an obligation to act. He also expressed his concern for China as the country reels from a massive earthquake.

McCain did not mention his Democratic rivals during his speech and instead began it by praising the Democratic governor of Oregon, “As President of the United States I will sit down with Governor Ted Kulongoski and all of the governors of this country whether they be Democrat or Republican and work for the betterment of this nation”

Even though they were not mentioned, both Democratic candidates put out statements panning the speech. Clinton said his proposal does not go far enough, while Obama said McCain’s history with energy policy makes it “truly breathtaking for John McCain to talk about combating climate change. . .”

The senator gave his speech at wind power technology company, Vestas, which he toured before his speech and even signed one of the massive turbine blades.

The tour and speech came on the same day that the McCain camp released an ad in Oregon touting McCain’s global warming credentials. The commercial called “A Better Way” aims to peg McCain as a moderate on the issue between conservatives who “deny the problem exists” and liberals who believe “high taxes and crippling regulation is the problem,” according to the ad.

No Republican has addressed climate change. Obama will though.

Comment by Marc

Neither will Black Panther supporter Hillary Clinton will.

Comment by Marc

Summary: On Hannity & Colmes, Dick Morris asserted that Hillary Clinton had worked as a “law student defending the Black Panther Party, and then she worked in a communist law firm.”

Comment by Marc

Hillary was no Communist, nor should her work in the Treuhaft firm imply that she was. But the fact that she chose this job out of all the summer jobs that might have been available, traveling three thousand miles for it, tells something about her orientation at the time. Just as the fact that she does not describe the firm’s work or reputation says something about her today.

Obama has addressed climate change many, many times.

Obama responded to McCain’s speech on the environment just now, hitting McCain on that long Senate record we’re going to learn a lot about this year:

It is truly breathtaking for John McCain to talk about combating climate change while voting against virtually every recent effort to actually invest in clean energy. You don’t have to look further than the wind turbine plant where Senator McCain is speaking today to assess his commitment to this cause. While Senator McCain talks about the need to invest in alternative energy, he rejected the single biggest investment in renewable energy in history, including incentives that contributed to a nearly 50% increase in wind power generation last year, and he has repeatedly opposed renewable fuel mandates and higher fuel efficiency standards for cars and trucks.

In stark contrast, I’ve called for a national standard to ensure that we’re using more renewable energy, an expansion of our green energy sector that would create millions of green jobs, and a bipartisan plan to double our fuel efficiency standards. That is why the American people will have a clear choice in November when I am the nominee – between a candidate who opposes real solutions to our energy crisis, and leadership that will solve it once and for all.

First of all, if you’re going to quote someone or an article it would be nice if you used quotes, and it’s only fair to post a link so the actual author gets credit.

And Obama needs to start with his own major backer Ted Kennedy if he’s going to talk about wind power.

obama voted for a gas tax holiday when he was in the IL state Senate, but now he is against it. Was he pandering to get votes?

Listening to McCant talk about climate change is like listening to Bush talk about Iraq policy.
The dismal track record speaks for itself. I will either be voting Libertarian or drinking heavily,or both on election night.

McSenile couldn’t attract a Geritol salesman to his campaign. He needs to drink his prune juice in a corner and exit gracefully. The most powerful position in the planet should not be held by someone 7 years past legal retirement age. Republicans will not find a redemption at any level. GOP is now the party of extremists gathered around abusive and foul radio shows with a flag in one hand and a cross in another. The big wigs have fled the GOP for greener pastures in the global economy. With their Potemkin facade in the national economy and foreign policy crumbled, GOP nearly brought ruin even to the Wall Street. This is an unimaginative party of feudals unfit to advance America in a competitive global economy. Instead, to hang on a little longer, they exploit our love of America and deplete our wealth in fighting bare feet inconsequential paupers. All GOP is left with is few bricklayers turned radio hosts and a couple of hired shrews for call-ins to read from prepared texts in the praising intervals.

The net contribution to the GDP of each American black is a negative $23,764.00, which is 39 times the positive contribution of American blacks to GDP. For every dollar that blacks contribute to the GDP, they receive $16.00 in social transfer payments. The net contribution to the GDP of each Hispanic, is a negative $5,128.00, which is equivalent to the positive contribution of Mexicans to Mexico’s`s GDP. The net contribution to the GDP of each Caucasian is a positive $13,527.00. $43,287.00/ family divided by 3.2 members per family. The net contribution to GDP of each Asian American is a positive $15,200.00. $48,614/ family divided by 3.2 members per family.

I am not familiar with the governor of Kentucky, but I think VA Senator Jim Webb is a good choice because of his themes of reorienting America’s national security posture, promoting economic fairness and increasing government accountability. Also he has introduced and cosponsored measures focused on developing robust practices of international diplomacy and supporting troops through responsible deployment cycles., has military experience, and has not been in Washington long enough to be corrupted. Although, admittedly there are a lot of good people who would be great VPs.

In case you hadn’t noticed, we and the Euros and the Israelis have been talking with the Islamist factions for the better part of 40 years. Ever heard of the Oslo Accords? Camp David Talks?, etc.

So convenient that liberals always forget about the dozens of rounds of peace talks. And how you conveniently forget that the Islamists have yet to honor A SINGLE provision in a SINGLE agreement over the last 40 years.

And you obviously don’t pay attention to the so-called sanctions. The Euros and China and Russia are falling all over themselves to sell goods to Iran, and earlier to Iraq, in violation of sanctions.
