McCain calls Hamas endorsement “legitimate point of discussion”

JERSEY CITY, NJ – Sen. John McCain struck back at his likely Democratic rival Friday, arguing that a senior Hamas adviser’s endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama is a “legitimate point of discussion,” after Obama called the issue a “smear.”

“It’s very obvious to everyone that Senator Obama shares nothing of the values or the goals of Hamas, which is a terrorist organization, I think that that’s obvious and I’ve certainly never implied anything else,” McCain told reporters a press conference in the Garden State Friday. “But it’s also a fact that a spokesperson from Hamas said that he approves of Senator Obama’s candidacy. I think that’s of interest to the American people and that is something that needs to be discussed–why his policies should meet the approval of a spokesperson for Hamas. I believe that’s a legitimate point of discussion.”

McCain was responding to comments made by Sen. Obama on CNN yesterday where the Illinois Senator accused the GOPer of smearing him by using the Hamas endorsement and then took a jab at his age.

“For him to toss out comments like that, I think, is an example of him losing his bearings as he pursues this nomination. We don’t need name-calling in this debate,” Obama told CNN Thursday.

While McCain said Friday that he ignored the comments, the campaign’s senior adviser Mark Salter released a memo Thursday that hammered Obama for bringing up McCain’s age and “trying desperately to delegitamize the discussion of issues that raise legitimate questions about his judgment and preparedness to be President of the United States.” (FULL MEMO AFTER JUMP)

For his part, McCain said Friday that he agrees that age is a legitimate topic for the campaign but quickly pivoted to the Jeremiah Wright issue, adding that Obama’s pastor is just as legitimate an issue.

“Every issue that the American people want to be an issue and it’s part of their discussions, it’s fine with me, it’s fine with me. Just as the Reverend Wright’s remarks, I don’t believe that senator Obama shares his views in any way but he has said that It is a legitimate topic of discussion. If that’s what the American people want to discuss, that’s fine,” McCain said. “I’ll continue to try to introduce them to my 96-year-old mother and display the same vigor and same energy that I have been able to display throughout this campaign which allowed me to win the nomination of my party. Any discussion, in my view, of any issue that the American people think is legitimate is up to them.”

For good measure, CT Sen. Joe Lieberman, who accompanied McCain to the press conference said that Americans can be assured that the presumptive GOP nominee’s “bearings” are in place.

“I just want to report that this morning I personally checked John McCain’s bearings. He has not lost any of them. They are really in great shape,” Lieberman said.

Re: Senator Obama’s Attack Today

First, let us be clear about the nature of Senator Obama’s attack today: He used the words ‘losing his bearings’ intentionally, a not particularly clever way of raising John McCain’s age as an issue. This is typical of the Obama style of campaigning.

We have all become familiar with Senator Obama’s new brand of politics. First, you demand civility from your opponent, then you attack him, distort his record and send out surrogates to question his integrity. It is called hypocrisy, and it is the oldest kind of politics there is.

It is important to focus on what Senator Obama is attempting to do here: He is trying desperately to delegitimize the discussion of issues that raise legitimate questions about his judgment and preparedness to be President of the United States.

Through their actions and words, Senator Obama and his supporters have made clear that ANY criticism on ANY issue — from his desire to raise taxes on millions of small investors to his radical plans to sit down face-to-face with Iranian President Ahmadinejad – constitute negative, personal attacks.

Senator Obama is hopeful that the media will continue to form a protective barrier around him, declaring serious limits to the questions, discussion and debate in this race.

Senator Obama has good reason to think this plan will succeed, as serious journalists have written of the need for ‘de-tox’ to cure ’swooning’ over Senator Obama, and others have admitted to losing their objectivity while with him on the campaign trail.

Today, Senator Obama is complaining about comments John McCain made about a senior Hamas advisor stating that Hamas would welcome Senator Obama’s election as president. Indeed, on April 13th, senior Hamas political advisor Ahmed Yousef said, ‘We don’t mind – actually we like Mr. Obama. We hope he will (win) the election and I do believe he is like John Kennedy, great man with great principle, and he has a vision to change America to make it in a position to lead the world community but not with domination and arrogance.’

The McCain campaign has never suggested that Senator Obama supports Hamas’ agenda, but it is more than fair to raise this quote about Senator Obama because it speaks to the policy implications of his judgment.

Just today, the president of Iran, whom Senator Obama wants to meet with unconditionally, called the state of Israel a ’stinking corpse.’ Iran is the paymaster and state sponsor of Hamas.

In his victory speech this week, Senator Obama stated that ‘wisdom’ is meeting with our enemies, including Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, North Korea’s Kim Jong Il, Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez and Cuba’s Raul Castro. John McCain couldn’t disagree more. Rather than giving tyrants and dictators the prestige of meeting with an American president, John McCain will instead meet with the champions of human freedom around the world and opposition leaders fighting for liberty .

We understand why Senator Obama doesn’t want to engage in a debate over leadership and judgment with John McCain, but the American people demand that debate take place.

These are serious times that call for a serious debate on the profound issues facing our future. John McCain is ready for that debate and we hope Senator Obama will one day get serious and join it.

Obama was endorsed by Hamas on ABC radio. More importantly, Obama’s campaign has had advisers who were overtly preferential to HAMAS and Hezbollah policies and causes. This article is from Worldnetdaily.com back from January 29 of 2008. Link:

http://www.wnd.com/index.php?pageId=45777

“Israeli security officials quietly expressed “concern” about an adviser to Sen. Barack Obama who has advocated negotiations with Hamas and providing international assistance to the terrorist group.
The officials noted Robert Malley, a principal Obama foreign policy adviser, has penned numerous opinion articles, many of them co-written with a former adviser to the late Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat, petitioning for dialogue with Hamas and blasting Israel for numerous policies he says harm the Palestinian cause.
Malley also previously penned a well-circulated New York Review of Books piece largely blaming Israel for the collapse of the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations at Camp David in 2000 when Arafat turned down a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza and eastern sections of Jerusalem and instead returned to the Middle East to launch an intifada, or terrorist campaign, against the Jewish state.
Malley’s contentions have been strongly refuted by key participants at Camp David, including President Bill Clinton, then-Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and primary U.S. envoy to the Middle East Dennis Ross, all of whom squarely blamed Arafat’s refusal to make peace for the talks’ failure.

“We are noting with concern some of Obama’s picks as advisers, particularly Robert Malley who has expressed sympathy to Hamas and Hezbollah and offered accounts of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations that don’t jibe with the facts,” said one security official, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The official stated he was not authorized to talk to the media about U.S. politics, noting Israeli officials are instructed to “stay out” of American political affairs.
In February 2006, after Hamas won a majority of seats in the Palestinian parliament and amid a U.S. and Israeli attempt to isolate the Hamas-run Palestinian Authority, Malley wrote an op-ed for the Baltimore Sun advocating international aid to the terror group’s newly formed government.
“The Islamists (Hamas) ran on a campaign of effective government and promised to improve Palestinians’ lives; they cannot do that if the international community turns its back,” wrote Malley in a piece entitled, “Making the Best of Hamas’ Victory.”
Malley contended the election of Hamas expressed Palestinian “anger at years of humiliation and loss of self-respect because of Israeli settlement expansion, Arafat’s imprisonment, Israel’s incursions, Western lecturing and, most recently and tellingly, the threat of an aid cut off in the event of an Islamist success.”
Malley said the U.S. should not “discourage third-party unofficial contacts with [Hamas] in an attempt to moderate it.”
Hamas is responsible for scores of deadly shootings, suicide bombings and rocket attacks aimed at Jewish civilian population centers. The past few weeks alone, Hamas militants took credit for firing more than 200 rockets into Israel. …..

American Woman,

You are incorrect about the Illegals getting health care. The actual statement which was debated by Allen Combs and Dick Morris was “every AMERICAN” will get health care. Dick Morris turned that into “illegals”. So get it straight.

As for McCain… I think I have seen Lieberman by his side too many times this year. Do you get a strong feeling that will be his running mate for VP? I think so and that would piss me off! He will have to win this election on his own without the aid of the conservatives.

I for one don’t like him and would prefer a scorched earth theory and get someone stronger in 2012.

Comment by Clint H

Wow… I didn’t know that white uneducated white folks could use the internet. I guess all these comments prove me wrong.

Obama does not support Hamas… In fact the other day, he stated clearly, that we should defend Israel at all cost. I think that is a pretty strong statement of support.

Yes, the questions McCain posted to Obama are legitimate questions. The fact that Obama did not want to debate Clinton after Pensylvannia is telling…Obama wants the highest position in our government, yet he wants to get it by by-passing the hurtle (ISN’T THAT POLITICS AS USUAL?– OBAMA IS THE WORTH AT IT–HIS CLAIMED POSITIONS AS THE CANDIDATE OF CHANGE DOES NOT SUPPORT HIS ACTIONS, THUS HIS FOLLOWERS HAVE BEING BAMBOOZLED WITH HIS RETHORIC) and get the position WITHOUT INTERVIEWING FOR THE JOB. Obama is a great orator; no doubt, apparently, he has prepared well in that sense “The Audacity of Hope”…but he demonstrates weakness when he is question about what real plans he has in place for this country besides the idea of “hope” and “yes we can”. Every candidate running for the presidency should be scrutinze without hesitation equally, but that has not taking place thus far.

Comment by Robin C

I think an endorsement by a terrorist organization is a legitimate point of discussion and clarification. No one says Obama agrees with them, but he certainly does want to sit down and discuss things with them…I don’t think anyone who supports Israel should support Obama. He will let them down because he is clueless and is trusting people he shouldn’t. There is no way Obama will openly debate on McCain’s age lest he be accused of discriminating against senior citizens. I don’t believe Obama is prepared to debate on much of anything. Hard to debate when you don’t have a prepared speech and a bank of teleprompters. And in the discussion I watched with Dick Morris last night, he referenced Obama’s total number of uninsured Americans and, after they calculated the total, he said Obama must be including about 12 million illegal aliens to have come up with the number he was giving. And excuse me, but our emergency rooms are full of people who don’t have insurance and I can tell you they don’t ask for proof of citizenship in order to receiving treatment. Then when they can’t pay, the taxpayers and people who have insurance pay for them anyway, so what difference does it make? Health care is out of control and developing a government funded program will just take more money out of the taxpayers’ pockets. But then, that’s what the Democrats do…tax, tax, tax. Listening to both Hillary and Obama, they are all about government control and government stepping in to “fix” things with new programs. Well, the programs cost money…duh!

They also don’t want to talk about how they are using that same money to fund Hillary’s campaign.

What is wrong with us speaking to our enemies. So far, nothing is working and more Americans are dying. I agree with Obama. There is nothing wrong with talking to our enemies. Iran is still building nuclear weapons and there are countries who won’t even let the U.S. come in. Our risk for going overseas has gotten even worst. We have to go on the site just to see if it is safe for an American to travel to even parts of Europe. When are we going to change things. So far, it’s not working the way the Republicans would like it. Joe Lieberman is a cancer to McCains campaign. He screwed Gore out of the White House and now McCain is going to keep that looser with him. MSNBC, FOX, and CNN have showed blogs and there own site and showed how racist white america is with there negative and racist comments about Obama. Still not helping. Leaders in Europe said yesterday that they are not surprise that White America would never support Black America. They also said that they would be happy to work with Obama. I remember when the first Bush said that we could not afford to keep giving money to Isreal and Lieberman got up and told Bush that he better give Isreal that money. That means Lieberman didn’t care that they wanted to put that money back into the U.S. Lieberman is a joke.

Comment by Haley Rodman Clemson

“Obama does not support Hamas…”

Maybe not but some of his campaign advisors openly do. On top of that, Jeremiah Wright believes Obama is just saying what he needs to say and the Hamas spokesperson believes that after Obama is elected he will be pro-Hamas (i.e. anti-Israel). Think about it, why wouldn’t he be anti Jew after have a muslim father and stepfather, attending a muslim school and attending a church whose pastor honors anti-Jews? All sign’s point to Obama being pro-muslim.

I chose not to vote for Barack based on his proposed policies, propensity to raise taxes and his social positons–all of which are undeniably fair game in an electon. Wright, Rezko, Hamas, Bittergate, Ayers, Dohrn, and his wife are just further justification that he is a terrble choice for Commander in Chief.

Do you know who gave them the weapons? The Clinton administration.

Bush is talked about enough and he has nothing to do with Obama’s ties to and support from terrorists. The Clintons gave Osama the resources he needed to strengthen his forces, no doubt there. Hillary is done, never had a chance to get back into the Oval Office in my opinion.

I really wish the media would dig deeper into Obama’s ties to shady characters and expose his views instead of trying to fabricate stories about McCain.

I am not talking about Joe Schmoe giving obama $50. No the CEO giving him the real meat and potatoes. So, probably. But , the Palestenians. You are babbling. Are they Sunnis that Syria , Saudi Arabia will not have anything to do with? Are they shia’ proxies the Iranians are using? All I know is our President should not be endorsed by such. In addition, nor should he be endorsed by the New Black Panthers. He may not seek the support of Hamas. But, it looks bad that the terrorists would want obama , because he is weak. Not because , of his muslim sympathies.

Marc, I don’t agree with you and I will not support a candidate with ties to terrorists. I don’t think most Americans will either. He wants to leave Iraq and go back if Al Qaeda takes over. As soon as we leave, Al Qaeda will take over and he will change his mind about going back in. He does not intend to go back in if Al Qaeda takes control of Iraq. He’s a liar plain and simple and I don’t trust him to protect America from another terrorist attack. You can’t be hesitant about aggressively pursuing the enemy because the moment we let our guard down, we will be attacked again. It’s naïve to think you can talk to people wearing explosive vests because they are consumed with hate. You cannot rational with irrational people.

Contradictory statements all over the place. Instead of saying something constructive MCain shows he has not much ammuntion when a line of liking Obama of a advisor to Hamas is such a big deal. On almost same day Cindy says we will bring a respectable campaign. She must be dreaming, or not have watched her husband in last couple of months. On top of that she refuses to disclose her income, even in the remote change she will be in the white house. Whats there to hide..Rev, wright can’t see McCain bring this up, since he has much larger problems on his associations, who actually endorsed him, and who McCain courted for over a year (Hagee). To say he didn’t know about hagee’s statements is rubbbish, since anybody could have seen those well before he embraced him on stage. Obama is riding high, and now McCain gets more scrutized about his land deals, flip-flops and hypocrisy. He doesn’t have much options since Hillary tried many tactics and failed. Worst of all he doesn’t have a campaign narrative, a short catchy phrase; any pres. candidate had in living memory. Like Bush was compassionate conservative, Obama change /hope, and McCain ..for now a lot of things which are not too flattering; his campaign has forsaken that important part which is not very smart.

Senator Obama’s has had such an unbelievable “joyride” from an adoring media, beginning over two years ago, that if anyone has the “audacity” now to ask him a direct question he, or his campaign guru’s immediately fire back that the comment or question is either “racist comment” or a “smear”. Hillary and Bill have been literally “whipped” by this clever strategy. It’ looks like Senator John McCain is wise to it–and that’s good news not only for him–but for American citizens and voters of all political persuasions. If you want to be President of the United States you’d better be ready to walk through fire. You can’t trot into the Oval Office spouting a lot of useless rhetoric about “hope”, and “Change”, and “Yes we can”! And those who have been “parroting” this crap better grow up–we’re in serious times, there’s no “On-the-Job” training for this job. No place for a “lightweight”!
