Hillary Makes her Case: I’ll Win Swing Voters
CHARLESTON, WV - Hillary Clinton laid out her increasingly rocky path to the nomination in three parts at the statehouse in Charleston today : win big in upcoming contests, seat delegates from Florida and Michigan, and make the case that she’s the most electable candidate against John McCain.
To do that, she’s eschewed attacks on Senator Obama in favor of arguments on why she’s better equipped to bring in swing voters (or, as she put it more bluntly in an interview with USA Today, white voters) that Democrats need to win in the fall.
“The delegate math might be complicated, but the electoral math is easy. We need 270 electoral votes to win in November,” she said. “I’m building such a strong and broad coalition among the states and voters we must have to deliver the White House.”
“I’m winning Catholic voters and Hispanic voters and blue collar workers and seniors, the kind of people that Sen McCain will be fighting for in the general election,” she said. “My campaign is winning swing states. Pennsylvania, Ohio, Arkansas, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, and yes, Michigan and Florida.”
That brought Sen Clinton to phase two — seating the two penalized swing states. “I’ve been working hard to make sure that the votes in Michigan and Florida are counted, because we can’t afford to give up on those two key states in November,” she said. To that end, she sent a letter to Sen Obama challenging him to work to honor those votes, writing “your commitment to the voters of these states must be clearly stated and your support for a fair and quick resolution must be clearly demonstrated.”
Finally, Clinton made it clear that she doesn’t just need to win West Virginia — she needs to win it big. “West Virginia is a test,” she said. “It’s a test for me and it’s a test for Sen Obama. Because for too long, we have let places like West Virginia slip out of the Democratic column.”
“I’m doing well here, but I want to do really well,” she said. “I want to make it clear that we are going to win West Virginia in the fall, because we need to bring back hard working people to the Democratic party.

THE PATH FORWARD
The path forward toward the nomination – and a victory in November – involves the following core elements:
* Doing well in upcoming contests: Hillary is positioned to do well in the upcoming contests. The next important contest is West Virginia - a critically important, key swing state in November. The campaign is going to set out over the next several days to demonstrate real strength in West Virginia and show that we can win the kind of state that Democrats have traditionally done well in, but have not done well in over the last several election cycles. Hillary has predicted that if she is the nominee, she will win West Virginia in November. Over the next week, she will demonstrate how she will accomplish that victory.
* Seating of delegations from Florida & Michigan: The campaign believes that Florida and Michigan should be seated at the convention. This is not going to be a convention of only 48 delegations – this is a country of 50 states and it should be a convention of 50 state delegations. Every state should be represented. Hillary won significant victories in both Florida and Michigan and the delegations from those states ought to be seated, commensurate with the results from those primaries, and it is our hope and our expectation that that will happen.
* Making the electability case: Hillary is a better match-up against Sen. McCain than Sen. Obama. The fact that Hillary has won competitive contests against Sen. Obama in key swing states - like Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, and Florida - suggests that Hillary will be a stronger nominee against Sen. McCain in those states. In fact, Hillary currently runs ahead of Sen. Obama vis-a-vis Sen. McCain in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Florida - all of which are critical states to any Democrat running in November.
* Hillary’s proven ability to win blue-collar and working-class votes in primary after primary also suggests that she would be the stronger nominee against Sen. McCain. Those are key swing votes that any Democrat would need to win in order to beat Sen. McCain. Hillary has proven that she can do that. Sen. Obama has not yet proven that he can win the key swing states, nor has he proven that he can win the votes of blue-collar workers.

Yesterday I was so lucky to attend the event Honoring Generations of Women with Chelsea Clinton, Hillary Clinton, and Dorothy Rodman. It was such a moving experience and at times I was crying I was so touched by Chelsea and Hillary Clinton.
I was particularly moved when Hillary talked about the struggle women face balancing family and work. She talked about the need for flexible hours, telecommunicating, and equal pay for equal work. She really nailed it. I personally have experienced pay disparity as a consultant. Clients have paid me less than male consultants for doing the same work. Often as much as 10 or 15 percent less.
This Mother’s Say, instead of having a massage or facial, as I usually do, I’m spending the day in West Virginia canvassing for the candidate who’s a mom and who really has solid plans to make women’s lives better. I hope you will join me and celebrate Mother’s Day by supporting Hillary
One concern about Obama…

Since its becoming more and more clear that Obama will be the nominee, as a Clinton supporter and Democrat first, I will obviously be supporting him. Also I agree with a lot of his policies, I just agreed with Clinton’s a little more. Anyway, I do two concerns about him that I do keep on noticing….
1. One reason I chose Clinton is how great she was in debates. I could very well see her wiping the floor with McCain. For Obama, he seemed to be “ok” but always came across as frustrated and made it clear he wasn’t enjoying the debate. I really hope that will change.
2. His campaign. He says he wont be swift-boated and will respond to every controversy immediately, yet when the Wright thing happened, even though it was extremely clear what he had to say and do, he waited. Kinda gives me concerns about the GE but hopefully he’ll improve.
Also, when the gas tax holiday debate came out, it was clear to everyone to run with the “the oil companies will just raise their prices anyway” mantra to shut down the whole debate in general. Instead it was somewhat here and there used but for the most part not so much.
So yeah, those have been some of my two main concerns about him. Hopefully he’ll be able to pick up the pace.

They said the repubs hung Obama and Pelosi around the dems neck but that didn’t even work I told you before that your problem isn’t gaining the WH. It should be trying to maintain the GOP as a viable and relative party..
She is absurddly stupid–or diabolically cunning to her assertion working class Americans who’ve lived a while–and really understand how things work—will leap to her agenda of moderate socialism–because Obama is black–and is drawing an unfair number of black votes.
If anything–middle-income, working Americans will be flocking to become disassociated with the Democrats and Republicans for utterly failing them–in pursuit of control/power in Washington.

I think its because The Clinton family has too much baggage to actually get anything done in Washington. The owe too many political favors (as evident by Bill Clinton’s last day in office where he pardon dozens of terrorist both domestic and internatally, dozens of criminals in jail for tax fraud, drug charges, etc…). I don’t know if you’ve read our laws but Blacks can vote and their votes count just as much as others. Plus Obama would have lost only state if he only had the black vote, he also has the college educated vote, and the younger (>35) white vote. I have no problem with Hillary, her and Obama are the same on the issues really. I just think she would be unable to get anything done. She hasn’t gotten heath care passed in 15 years, even when as first lady here ONLY task was with her husband as the president and democrats in the congress, her ONLY job was Universal Heath care and she could. Being a fighter is good… but winning is better.
Obama says he will announce his victory on May 20th must be nice to set the rules of the game! As far as I know America still has voters votes left to be counted.

Obama ran a smart campaign and yet now needs the Clinton supporters to get elected. He banked on the fact that by winning the traditional red states he could get enough delegates from the blue states through caucuses to win and he was correct. What he didn’t bank on was the extra-ordinary bitterness between the two camps and now is faced with a dilemma. How to pull those Clinton voters? Easiest way is for Hillary to be VP, but as long as she says support him, he may get enough to win. Should be interesting.

I am a lifelong Democrate and will not vote for Obama for many reasons.
One reason is that I am tired of the liberal side of the party getting the nomination. The last two elections, the Democrats have had two strong candidates. The problem is the “blue collar” white voters wouldn’t vote for them. John Kerry is an extremely honorable and well thought of; however, he couldn’t bring in that vote. (For the record, I am a “white collar” person that grew up in a very poor blue collar family.)
Good news for me and others like me! John McCain is a good man. In fact, I wish he would have won the Republican nomination last time. He would have been a much better President than Bush.
I will be happy to vote for McCain. It will be the first time that I vote Republican. I do fell sorry for all the young people and American Americans. They are going to be disappointed in November. (Just as I was disappointed the last two elections.)
Maybe next time, the Democratic Party will have learned their lesson and choose a moderate. In the meantime, McCain will be a great President.

Not long after the polls close in the May 20th Kentucky and Oregon primaries, Barack Obama plans to declare victory in his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, Politico reports today.
How convenient, and how utterly arrogant, that Senator Obama would seek to anoint himself before the Rules Committee has the opportunity to discuss enfranchising 2.5 million voters who went to the polls in Michigan and Florida. In case the Obama Campaign lost the memo, the first meeting of the Rules Committee is scheduled for May 31st — 11 days after he plans to “declare victory.”
Is Obama afraid of that the results from that meeting? Of course he knows that a positive outcome for the people of Florida and Michigan would change the number of delegates needed to win the nomination, and would net Clinton more pledged delegates.
Or does Obama hope that his premature self-declaration will distort the fact that he’s going to lose a chunk of his delegate lead by June 3rd once all the remaining states (plus PR) vote? Does he want the Rules Committee members to conclude in advance that their May 31st meeting is actually irrelevant?
There is no possiblity that Obama will earn enough pledged delegates, not even close, by May 20th. In fact, since Hillary Clinton will likely win West Virginia (on May 13th) and Kentucky (on May 20th) by huge double-digit margins — Barack Obama’s pledged delegate lead will have shrunk by May 20th. I just saw that Clinton has a 40 point lead in West Virginia just 5 days out to that election! Despite the mad cries this week to end things, it appears that Clinton is actually gaining momentum. Wow, a blow-out like that in West Virginia, a general-election swing state, would be devastating for Obama as he simultaneously tries to persuade the Superdelegates, and everyone else in America, that he can win enough Democratic votes in November to beat John McCain.
And don’t forget..Superdelegate votes don’t count for anything until the convention.
So…yes, it appears that Barack Obama is very scared. Scared of the people in Florida, Michigan, West Virginia, Kentucky, Puerto Rico; scared of the Democratic process; and possibly scared that more of his skeletons will pop out of the closet before June. I can’t really say, don’t know what he’s thinking, but Jeez, Senator, let Democracy be!
I’m not sure how Hillary feels when she hears about Obama’s plans to declare himself the nominee before the primary process is completed…But as a Hillary supporter, I say: TAKE IT TO THE CONVENTION, BABY.
