The Lake County Hold Up

So what exactly caused the hold up last night in Lake County, Indiana, which lead to the cliffhanger of an outcome in the state’s primary? The state wasn’t called for Senator Clinton until late into the night because Lake County–part of the Chicago suburbs– used a system of tabulating votes called “central counting” where absentee ballots are counted at the end of the day. This system is usually reserved for rural communities while urban areas tabulate absentee ballots throughout the day. Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita made it clear that the Lake County election board needs to change their ways:

“The fear is that when you go behind closed doors and you take a lot of time–of course the number one priority is accuracy, but when you take an overabundant amount of time and the nation not to mention the state is waiting the only thing that can come of that is suspicion of nefarious activities so you want to get if not a total count out at least partial count out–a rolling count out so that we all know again as tax payers, as voters that the count is occurring and that we are getting results on a piecemeal basis,” Rokita said, “That didn’t happen. That usually doesn’t happen in Lake County and they have been criticized before for that practice

Rokita mentioned Lake County’s less than stellar reputation when it comes to their election board. He said he usually sends teams of his deputies up to Lake County to monitor their elections and he is hoping for more transparency in the future. However, county election boards in Indiana are autonomous and state government can merely suggest changes and cannot regulate their behavior as long as it is lawful. Rokita said he is not going to investigate and does not suspect any illegal activity, but that he will continue to monitor the situation. He added that he wouldn’t put political mischief past the board:

“This is a board made up of politicians and political wannabes and I don’t put politics past delaying the vote or anything like that, but I can’t find anything they did that is contrary to Indiana law at this point.”

Rokita was adamant that transparency and the ability for the media and public to monitor the vote count process is imperative and he will continue to ask Lake County that they change their system:

“They have to be doing better than the other guy because of their reputation, but there is no excuse for not reporting out at least the partial tally as they are counting,” Rokita stressed, “We haven’t had any reports that media weren’t allowed to watch the tally. But certainly that has to be the case. This isn’t Rome where a puff of white smoke comes out and the two party chairmen announce the results. I mean in order for people to have trust in the process they have to be able to see it. Giving a partial tally throughout the night like you do in the rest of this country really is something they ought to adopt.”

This is the first presidential primary election in 40 years where the Hoosier state found itself in the spotlight and overall the Secretary of State said things went smoothly. There were some ballot shortages, but those issues were rectified quickly. He also mentioned a surge in crossover voting yesterday—the Indiana primary is open meaning that Republicans can cross over to vote in the Democratic primary. Rokita added that traditionally conservative strongholds throughout the state were inundated with Democratic primary voters because of the crossover voting causing some of the ballot shortages.

I signed the petition - thanks.
Obama will not win this election - you need more than the all black vote to win - might need working class people, Catholics, Jews - might even need FL & MI - two states that obama blocked a re-vote.
Hillary supporters will never vote for obama - not because of race - or - sex - we tend to vote for the BEST QUALIFIED - obama is not.
Hillary or McCain for President

News: 5/7/08
“It’s clear Obama crushed Clinton in early votes cast in both states. A good portion of these votes where cast before the controversy over the Rev. Jeremiah Wright took hold a second time in the campaign and before Clinton engaged Obama in a debate over her proposal for a federal gasoline tax holiday.”

This news proved and shows Obama only won because of those early votes cast. Especially in NC states before his Pastor resurfaced. The polls are true but because of early votes casts by mostly Black who are solid behind Obama this the Wright controversy seems no effect but it will in these next primaries.

NC has 30% Black electorate who voted 92% for Obama simply because he’s black. But in almost all states white, Brown, Asian electorates favors Hillary Clinton.

How in the world will Obama win in the General elections with Black Votes only without other etnic groups?

Whites will be voting for John McCain in this General Election and this is a fact if Hillary Clinton is not the nominee for Democrats.

DNC Leaders should know this and GOP really wants Obama to win the nomination for democrats.

You had only to be watching CNN last night after midnight to see what was going on in Lake County. It was so obvious that someone (and I think it was the Mayor of Gary, IND) was trying to perform irregularities. I cannot believe anyone who is supposedly smart enough to be mayor could be as dumb as that guy. I work the elections here in my county and when someone hands in their votes at 7:30pm, it smacks of some hanky panky when they are not reported until 1AM. The mayor of Hammond was on the phone with CNN and he stated he and he named 6 or seven other cities that had turned in their returns at 7:30 and he knew they had all gone to Clinton and he even know by an approximate amount of how much. However, those votes were the last ones to be reported. The mayor in Gary kept saying “we’re counting the 10,000 early voters” and also one of the first things he said was that no one was going to be disenfranchised (now wonder why he would say that). I truly believe that there was some one trying to make sure Obama got more votes than Senator Clinton and I truly believe that would have happened if CNN hadn’t kept on at him and the other mayor hadn’t toward the end said that he felt there were inproprities going on. When he said that both the mayors were on the line and there had only been 56% reported (none were the ones from the Hammond area) and almost immediately it was up to 98%. Could that be why Obama is doing so well??????? makes you wonder…

Bella,

This is a silly idea. Besides Hillary won’t support it, here’s why-

Once Obama gets the democratic nomination Hillary will have NO choice but to support him (this includes campaigning for him). Because if she doesn’t or if she tries to undermine his campaign causing him to lose, she won’t get re-elected in New York. She has a large African American constituency who made it possible for her to get elected by their overwhelming support.

If she de-rails Obama’s campaign, I guarantee that she will not get re-elected to another senate term. Then she will really be out of the game.

Comment by Sean the thinker

Jeff, this type of stuff happens all the time with both parties, and with both candidates. The Clinton camp was accused of a similiar irregularity with the Texas primary.

So don’t make more of this than what it is. The problem is that the media SELECTIVELY reports targeted cases of voter irregularities to appeal to and reinforce notions of a particular segment of viewers.

Hmmm I wonder who they could be?

JeffX - don’t be so quick to blame the dems. I was watching the election results during the last election and was waiting for Ohio to come in. Kerry was thousand ahead of Bush. It looked like Kerry would win, then all at once, in a matter of seconds, many, many thousands of votes were posted for Bush. Sounds like the same thing was happening there too, huh, of course we know Bush is very good at stealing elections. There were thousands of votes in Fl that time that did not count. so it looks like the pot calling the kettle black,

To all Clinton supporters. To show our support we also need to go to her website and donate. I have already done so. I was thinking about having a presence at the Dem National Convention in Aug. I know the blacks were planning on protesting if Obama doesn’t get the nom. I am going to keep an eye out for any movement for Hillary in this direction. A lot of the Dems think that Clinton supporters are just saying they won’t vote for Obama in Nov. But I can assure you I won’t. I am afraid for my country if he does win. He is all smoke and mirrors and back room deals.
The vote in IN was rigged. They got it as close as they could and then when the mayor of IN started making noise they had to put out their numbers. Lake Cty IN wasn’t the only county that “suddenly” had 100% of their vote counted. Lake Cty was just the only one that was so late because they were trying to make up the difference Obama needed. Really does make you wonder where else it was like that. I think everyone knows the people Obama associates with are not above this kind of dirty politics.
DONATE FOR HILLARY TO SHOW YOUR SUPPORT TO HER AND THE DNC!

ROFL…Come on EJ..even the DEM leaders didn’t buy that lie when the figures were all counted.

We all know the REAL voter crooks are the Democrats, from keeping laws being passed to force voter ID cards today, all the way back before the JFK/Nixon 1960 scandal in Chicago.

Some of these DEM operatives aren’t very smart in cheating, like a few elections ago when a Clinton big time contributor and friend decided to bribe votes from the homeless at the Milwaukee Rescue Mission with packs of cigarettes. The idiot didn’t see that across the street was the ABC affiliate WISN and they caught it all on TV from their window. Geez..you’d think the idiot DEM could would of noticed all the satellite dishes and satellite trucks next to the building and the 12′ high call letters sign.

I would like all those who continue to play the race card and assume what African-Americans are going to do in this election to read this. Let me state first that I’m a proud African-American man and proud American. For the first time in history we have the opportunity to elect an African-American or Female to the highest position in the land. Now African-Americans never had a problem with Hillary running for the Presidency and possibly supporting her. But Hillary shot herself in the foot time and time again during the process that has virtually made it impossible for her to get the nomination and honestly to be taken seriously in the future. None of Hillary’s issues during this campaign did Obama cause she caused them herself. It is no secret that yes African-Americans are going to support Obama in the election. We are supporting him and alot of white, asian, and latino Americans because it is time for a change. We have been under the Clinton/Bush administrations since 1988 (20 yrs). Obama has ran an excellent campaign and has stayed above the fray and mudslinging which is refreshing for alot of Americans. Obama could have made gender an issue because we all know that it is no easier for a woman to ascend to the Presidency than an African-American. Obama gave Hillary the respect she deserved because she is a qualified candidate for the office also, but the same respect was not given to Obama. Everyone wants to talk about if Hillary doesn’t win we are not voting for Obama and the reason is not because your candidate did not win or the other is not qualified, BOTH of them are highly qualified. The reason why you will not support Obama is because he is an African-American. We want to sensationalize the Rev. Wright story and label him a racist, but you all thinking along the same lines but in reverse. You would be fooolish to give the position to McCain because you are saying that the way things are in this country and abroad are okay and if that is how you feel I guess I need to be living in your little world, because for alot of Americans things are not okay. We as Democrats need to get behind whoever gets the nomination and support them and leave some of these nasty characteristics to the Republicans that have been displayed among Democrats during this process.

Comment by Doreen

Obama’s cronies in Gary, Indiana were caught red-handed stealing votes for Obama. The only reason Obama is leading in pledged delegates is because in the Republican caucus states that Obama won, this vote stealing for Obama also took place. However, this time the spotlight was right on Gary, Indiana so thay were forced to stop the cheating for Obama. Hillary won Indiana, but would have won by even a wider margin had Obama’s cronies in Gary, Indiana not pulled these shenanigans. Also the polling shows that Rev. Wright and bittergate did, in fact, hurt Obama with white folks. The polls are eschewed toward black voters thoughts and opinions so are not showing the true numbers that dislike Obama.

Comment by Ralph

Voter fraud in heavilly democratic precincts? What a shock that is. There may very well be voter fraud in Lake county but I feel the main reason was to wait out the media and the speeches by the candidates declaring victory. They accomplished that by delaying the tally. Clinton had to go on the air not declaring victory and most people were asleep at that time on the east coast. That truly was a mission accomplished by the mayor who happens to be an Obama supporter. I find it humorous and it will continue to drive a wedge through the democratic party. Hillary Clinton is going to the convention for a fight plain and simple. As a Mccain supporter I feel that the democrats are handing him the presidency on a silver platter. Way to go Dems.

Comment by NIck Dorsey

he predictions of the mayor intimating that there was a vast reservoir of votes in Gary that would, if his percentages were correct, turn the tide and secure an Obama victory were unethical and calculated. It was untrue. Late, Fox showed Hillary leading by 21,000 with 90% counted. Then there was a dip at 95% to 17,00 which seemed to give credibility to the mayor’s assertions. But by the time 100% were counted the margin had in fact increased to about 23,000.

He took advantage of the late reporting to in effect freeze the media from calling the race for Clinton, as had CBS. The fear of being wrong was to some degree understandable. It is hard to believe that these were the actions of an independent rogue politician. It is more plausible that he did it with the full agreement, indeed the blessing of the Obama campaign.

This has been a chronic problem in Gary and was even predictable.

Had the votes been assessed earlier, as the several mayor in Clinton towns surrounding Gary
stated they could and should have been, the race would have been called much earlier. As the Hammond mayor stated, they submitted their vote I believe around 7 PM. She had to carry virtually every other town heavily to offset the admittedly large margin in Gary. The final county number was about 55-45, I believe.

The race would have been called when Clinton still had over a 4 point lead and probably more. The storyline and punditry would have had to be quite different, i.e. “Clinton still alive, splits with Obama.” The fact that Obama later narrowed the gap so much would have been more of a footnote. On many other levels, it was insidious. Once the talking heads had established a position, it was difficult, nay impossible, to take a different tack. In effect, once the consensus was that Clinton was on the verge of defeat, ego and other considerations sealed her fate.

The final crusher was the demoralizing of the Clinton faithful and the huge collateral impact on her immediate fund raising ability. An early Clinton victory likely would have energized supporters and led to an impulsive infusion of funds, as happened in Pa. As it was, by the time the squeaker was called, there was some uncertainty as to whether she would continue. On numerous blogs, Obama agents came in saying that she had canceled all appearances the next morning. True or not, it abetted the idea that she might quit. There are few people that will give, certainly not as generously, to retire a campaign debt as they will to an ongoing energetic campaign.

The “Change” Obama is so obsessed with looks more like Chicago politics replacing Washington’s politics. Interesting that a Chicago suburb was the last one to turn in votes and that those votes went overwhelmingly for Obama. If no one else has accused Obama of being a dirty liar on this thread yet please let me be the first to do so. Obama is a liar and so are his supporters. He hates this country, its culture and its traditions. He would be a better fit for president of Syria than of the USA.

Thanks Mike for your msg. I am glad you speak for all African-Americans…I have been looking for someone for a long time who does.

You are certainly a racist, as evidenced by your statement, ” Everyone wants to talk about if Hillary doesn’t win we are not voting for Obama and the reason is not because your candidate did not win or the other is not qualified, BOTH of them are highly qualified. The reason why you will not support Obama is because he is an African-American.” SO, your theory pre-supposes if Hillary does not gain the nomination, the white electorate will not vote for Obama because he is a black man. That view is as flawed as the views espoused by “Reverend” Wright, and smacks of the rhetoric from the 1960’s and before.

I will vote for the best candidate, period, irregardless of party or color or gender. Please do not do my thinking for me; you are not qualified.

I can tell you this with all sincerity; I have been attending white churches for 45 years. I have NEVER heard a statement criticial of African Americans, or any other race. I have never heard the United States of America denounced in any form. If I had…I would have done more then walk out…I would have disrupted the service, made my views known….and carried a picket sign outside the building until “change” had been made.

Give my regards to Reverend Wright when you see him again. Thank HIM for the controversy surrounding Obama, and for the racial views you so cleverly try to hide.

Well, do you think there was cheating…….of course. Hillary got a slim win because of it. I think every vote in that County needs to be recounted with Hillary supporters sitting in. Cheating is never the way to do anything. That will come back to bite Obama.

When I saw on TV the ones counting the votes, I made my own judgement, and now we have state officials wondering if that happened. Lets not wonder and wait for the next election to fix things, lets do it over an do it right in that County.

I have donated to Clinton, she needs our support and I will support her any way I can. She is the only one running that I trust to do right by me the hard working middle class. Obama is an elitist as evidenced by many remarks he has made. Including the remark by his wife about never being proud until now of America. Of course she has such a hard time paying for day care with her 2$200,000+ salary. I make $25,000 a year I would like her to try to make ends meet on that! Yet I am and always have been proud of my country. Obama and his “bitter” comment makes me laugh. The only bitter people I have seen in this process is the black racists. Obama has divided this country in ways it hasn’t been divided since before MLK. I believe MLK would be ashamed of him. MLK would never have attended Obama’s church for 20 years. Obama has bought this election. He has taken money from lobbyist only in a round about way, thru family and friends. He has promised the unions help getting them deregulated like they were in the old Jimmy Hoffa days. Check out the taped meeting he had with the Teamsters and his remark that having friends in the WH can get things done for you. His election to the IL Senate was arranged by Rezko and he went virturally uncontested. Rezko, his friends, including Ayers and Rev. Wright all helped to get him elected to the US Senate. They taught him well.
