Clinton Campaign Talking Points: Indiana Edition
The Clinton campaign’s talking points for surrogates and supporters today strain hard to spin last night’s worse-than-expected performance into a victory over what they paint as an enormously advantaged Obama campaign.
“It is laughable that the Obama campaign tonight said that Senator Clinton was supposed to win Indiana, when the campaign itself had an internal memo predicting a seven-point victory in his neighboring state,” reads a document sent out to donors by finance director Jonathan Mantz. “Senator Obama himself called this the tie breaker state and we couldn’t agree more.”
The memo lists Obama’s advantages in the state, which included a spending advantage of 2-1 and the nearby Chicago media market — as well as the fact that Indiana is an open primary, which Clinton officials once spun as an advantage for their candidate. “Let’s be clear about what this loss means for Senator Obama - this is the first state bordering Illinois that Obama has lost. When it came time for him to talk directly to hard working middle class families about their economic concerns, he fell short.”
As a bonus, the talking points include notes on the campaign’s recent re-emphasis on Michigan and Florida — which, when added to the mix, put the magic delegate number for the nomination at 2209.
“Q: Will you take this fight to the credentials committee at the convention?” the campaign asks in a mock FAQ.
“A: We don’t think it will come to that. We believe Democrats think all fifty states should play a role in the process.”
Read the full talking points after the jump
Indiana Victory Points
* Hillary Clinton spoke to Hoosiers all over this state about their concerns and showed them she has what it takes to bring new jobs to Indiana and be the Commander in Chief America needs
* Combined, Hillary Clinton, President Clinton and Chelsea made over 100 stops across the state working hard to earn the support of the voters in every corner, towns and cities big and small across the state.
* Hillary Clinton proposed immediate relief for families at the gas pump and presented bold aggressive, long-term solutions for the economy. Barack Obama instead has chosen more rhetoric rather than real, immediate relief to working families.
* It is laughable that the Obama campaign tonight said that Senator Clinton was supposed to win Indiana, when the campaign itself had an internal memo predicting a seven-point victory in his neighboring state. Senator Obama himself called this the tie breaker state and we couldn’t agree more.
* Senator Clinton earned this victory despite Senator Obama outspending us over two to one, this is an open primary where Obama has typically performed better and he routinely enjoys wall to wall television coverage from the large Chicago media market that plays into Northwest Indiana.
* Let’s be clear about what this loss means for Senator Obama - this is the first state bordering Illinois that Obama has lost. When it came time for him to talk directly to hard working middle class families about their economic concerns, he fell short.
2209 Delegates Are Needed To Clinch the Nomination
Background: 2209 delegates are needed to clinch the Democratic nomination when ALL states and territories are counted in the process. The DNC’s Rules & Bylaws committee meets on May 31 to consider challenges aimed at ensuring that the ENTIRE country decides the Democratic nominee.
* 2209 delegates are needed to secure the Democratic nomination for President.
* All the states and territories must play a role in the process and the elections from ALL of the states count. A nominee cannot be decided by just 48 states.
* The idea that we’d exclude 2.5 million voters who cast ballots from deciding the nominee is an affront to our democracy and is inconsistent with the ideals on which our nation was founded.
* The Democratic Party is the party committed to making sure that every vote counts. Democrats can’t kick off the general election campaign by disenfranchising the nearly 2.5 million people who voted in Florida and Michigan.
* Barack Obama has said that his campaign’s position “consistently has been that the Michigan and Florida delegations should be seated.” [NPR, 3/14/08]
* We assume Barack Obama shares Senator Clinton’s view that every vote counts – including those from Michigan and Florida.
FAQ
Q: Aren’t you changing the rules?
A: The Clinton campaign has always believed that all the states and territories should be counted. All the states and territories must play a role in the process and the elections from ALL of the states count. A nominee cannot be decided by just 48 states.
Q: If Barack Obama gets to the magic number of 2025, will you recognize him?
A: The nominee needs to be decided by all states and territories, and the DNC process will validate that view when it’s completed.
Q: Will you take this fight to the credentials committee at the convention?
A: We don’t think it will come to that. We believe Democrats think all fifty states should play a role in the process.

GO HILLARY!!
Obama has NOT won! - He is NOT electable due to his radical background.
Keep Up the Fight - Let ALL the people VOTE!
Senator Obama himself called this the tie breaker state and we couldn’t agree more.
I couldn’t agree more. Hillary is a fighter and wins the middle class in America..and if the DNC had vetted this guy…Hillary would already be our nominee…but since they didn’t we have to fight on..
Indiana was a Tie Breaker and Hillary WON…beat him in his own backyard.
Remember a Win’s a Win but by Obama’s own words Hillary is the BIG WINNER…SHE WON INDIANA…
I was dissappointed in the NC spread…but hey Proud of her win in Indiana…
God Bless America
News: 5/7/08
“It’s clear Obama crushed Clinton in early votes cast in both states. A good portion of these votes where cast before the controversy over the Rev. Jeremiah Wright took hold a second time in the campaign and before Clinton engaged Obama in a debate over her proposal for a federal gasoline tax holiday.”
This news proved and shows Obama only won because of those early votes cast. Especially in NC states before his Pastor resurfaced. The polls are true but because of early votes casts by mostly Black who are solid behind Obama this the Wright controversy seems no effect but it will in these next primaries.
NC has 30% Black electorate who voted 92% for Obama simply because he’s black. But in almost all states white, Brown, Asian electorates favors Hillary Clinton.
How in the world will Obama win in the General elections with Black Votes only without other etnic groups?
Whites will be voting for John McCain in this General Election and this is a fact if Hillary Clinton is not the nominee for Democrats.
DNC Leaders should know this and GOP really wants Obama to win the nomination for democrats.

How does Obama/Clinton policies compare to that of Bush/McCain — this why I stand by my initial statement that you deserve to be sent to Iraq without body armor.
McCains experince out ways Obama’s. Health insurance McCains is going to give 5000.00 for a family! I have Health Insurance but for the people that don’t they have to have it or Obama fines them if they don’t cover there kids and that is wrong and his plan don’t cover everyone!
We definitely need a Democrat in the White House. Aftr 8 years of Bush, it’s time to for a change. I used to be a Hillary supporter, but after I saw how she was running her campaign in a negative and dirty way, I moved to Obama. Eventhough he may not have the “experience” that Clinton has, he at least had the wisdom not to vote for the Iraq War. No matter how much the Clintons slam him, he still retains his lead.
For the Clinton supporters who say they will not vote for Obama, just remember, voting for McCain is like keeping Bush in office.
On Hindsight, Hillary should dye her skin black before the NC primrary.
If she had done that, Obama will loose in NC.
36% of NC voter base are blacks, and 92% them are for obama because of obama’s skin color.
It means that Obama won the state because he has 33% of the votes in his bag even before the first white person cast his/her vote on Tuesday.

Yup..nothing negative about attacking small town Americans or having a “mentor” that God D**ns your country. Very uplifting! Oh and I liked the Michelle Obama “first time in my life I’m proud of my country”…very uplifting too.
I am one of the Clinton supporters that will vote McCain if Hillary isnt the nominee..I dont want a socialist as a commander in chief. Also, it isnt true that McCain isnt voting for a third Bush term..If that were the case, then Wright would be running the country.
Also, McCain has fought for the people and stands up against his party especially when he is wrong..Thus, the nickname that he has enjoyed having Maverick..A republican by association but speaks his own beliefs..
If he really was Bush’s successor, the republican party wouldnt have their own issues with McCain.
I will take McCain any day he has the experience during these troubling times that is something Obama lacks! Obama won his Senate seat by default and now he is running for the highest office in the land with no experience No thank you! Not only that i really don’t give a SH*T what you think! Obama can’t win with out Hillary’s supporters there is already 60% that won’t support Obama so he is totally unelectable! If the Democrats want to win they better endorse Hillary!
I offer my take on hitting that proverbial nail in Hillary’s coffin…
Call upon all Democrats in the states with remaining primaries, mainly West Virginia and Kentucky, to stand up to the challenge of our generation…saving the Democratic party. The remaining voters don’t really have a say in who is the nominee. That is already over. Senator Obama is the nominee. What they do have, however, is the opportunity to vote for him to strike the strife amongst the party dead in its tracks.
So, I suggest that we call upon them to vote for an end to the fighting and give ample time needed to repair the party and win the general election.
tatiana Mr. Obama was not there to vote. So what if he has hindsight. He was only protecting some of his friends. Mr. Obama just lets his followers smear Hillary and claims he doesn’t play that game. Yet all of his fliers slant the truth about Hillary so which is dirtier. He has no wisdom or he would have know enough to leave his church and not let his children hear such talk. He would’nt have associated with all his shady friends. What about his limo driver. What avout his wifes remarks or $100,000 raise in one year. Lets just go for the more qualified. At least Johns has proven he loves his country. Wake up and get behind Hillary she will make you proud.

Tucson…Hmmm..what compels people to advertise their educational degrees in a place like this?
Is it ego?…Is it a feeling of inferiority, and therefor one must constantly advertise their accreditation? I’ve always wonder why someone would start expressing a thought by trying to impress people. Perhaps they like the feeling of talking down to people.
It’s like the women in here over 40, they always have to advertise their age and race, like that actually means anything…Hmmm…just me wondering about things.
Hillary Clinton cannot win the white house without black votes — and neither can any democrat for that matter — So the reason it may seem now that Obama supporters are more favorable towards Hillary than hers towards him is because she is the losing candidate. If the nomination was “stolen” and given to Clinton — She will not even win New York her home state because blacks will not vote for her. The black votes is just as crucial as the whites for all democrats.. I have given you a credible analysis —If you don’t see it, I can no longer help.
Obama will raise taxes and drive jobs out of America plus hurt small businesses. Obama is against letting industry provide cheaper energy for the people via drilling for new oil, building new refineries and nuclear power. Obama was behind biofuel that is causing food prices to go sky high and food riots in poor Nations. Obama is for big government where most of the people’s money goes to Federal bureaucrats and corrupt Rezco types. Obama has very little experience and has surrounded himself with racist, Anti-American, hate mongers. In fact I cannot think of anything significant Obama has accomplished other than being good at reading a teleprompter with words written by his twenty speech writers.

You are WRONG about your assertion.
1. She is not LOOSING, she is just trailing.
2. Obama is NOT winning. He is just leading in terms of delegate counts.
3. As long as she don’t quit, Obama will never Win. To Win means to get 2025 delegates.
4. If the Dems has a system of similar to that of the Republican, winner takes all delegates, Hillary would have WON long ago. Obama will be back in that trinity Chicago church listening as saying Amen to Wright’s hate and racist speech.
5. Had all the obama’s scandal regarding Rev. Wright and Bill Ayers been out before Feb 5, Obama would have LOST by now.
So, don’t come here and shove obama and michelle down our throats.
I don’t understand why the Democrats can’t let this process play out until
all voters’ voices have been heard.
If the powers that be think they will heal this party with their negative
attitude, they are wrong. I have already denied any funding to the
Democratic Party.
And if they push Sen. Clinton out of this race I will lead
a charge for all of the Clinton supporters to become INDEPENDENTS and get
her put on the ballot in all 50 states.
Not only will the Dems push her out - they will lose 49% of their party.
So, I challenge them to, GO AHEAD, MAKE MY DAY AND DESTROY THIS PARTY!
Barbara of NC
While I’d never vote for a Democrat, I as an outsider can see that Hillary was “railroaded” by the DNC and the liberal media. A man with Obamas obvious lack of any experience, as well as his very shady and downright Anti-American friends should of made him a non-starter to even run for office.
The man cannot communicate with anyone without a speech and telepromter. He’s easily flustered by the least little non-softball question.
You really have to wonder if the Howard Deans and other Democratic Party low-life leasders don’t simply want a weakling in there. One they can easily manipulate. I’m sure our enemies feel the same way.
She won Ohio, Pennsylvania, California, New Hampshire, New York, Florida, Michigan, ETC…… without the Black vote!

You’re FOOL! If you think Obama will win with Black Votes only…
Go to your cave and bark to yourself! Neanderthal!!!
If Not Hillary - We’re voting solid for McCain!
Hillary is not pushing for the real answer to the Florida and New Hampshire delegates. There are only two positions.
First, sometime, I think it was mid-morning on the first day of Creation that God said there will eventually be a United States and they will have two states, one named Iowa, and the other New Hampshire. Being he who created the whole whizbang, I am fully within my rights as shown in my new owners manual for this place to require that Iowa and New Hampshire be given preferential voting in perpetuity.
The GOP has at least tried being nice to me so I will let them get by with only a 50% voter penalty if anybody challenges my primeeval decree and has a primary out of sequence.
Buy you Democrats are different. Didn’t think I’d noticed who took prayer out of school did you. Your penalty will be no agreement on whether to count the votes or not. Personally, since a lot of you don’t really follow me on a daily basis why worry about the decree and just change it by having the states rotate the privaledge of being first. You know cooperate. I used to say that a lot more when I was a new parent, Oh Well, there goes the Baltic again see you.
Second, if you do not believe that God had the voting order for Iowa and New Hampshire chisled in stone, then get off of your duffs and make congress change it. Let’s see — the current process benefits 2 states, the reform could help 48 states even a Hillary fan should be able to see what really needs to be done. Fix it once it is selfish. Fix the process it is statesmanship.
I feel that Hillary should drop out of the dem race, consolidate her funds and run as Independent now.
She have a real good chance of Winning if she does that.
There are a lot of skeletons in obama that Hillary, as a Dem candidate, cannot throw at him. She has pulled back her punch at obama regarding Wright, Ayers, Rezko, Farrakkhan… because she does not want to split the part then.
Since they wanted to push her out, it comes a time, where she should ran as Independent and go for an No Hold barred All out attack on obama.
I would question your age and political intelligence but it will be unfair.
Do you know the population of OH and PA ? kerry won PA by 2 % margin over bush- what will happen if you deduct the AA votes — you lose. this goes for OH and every other state the dems need.

Tammy,
also don’t compare the primaries with the general election.
Since Obama is such a blank slate the only measure of the man we have is who he associates with and calls his friends. If any other candidate associated with racist, anti-American hate mongers, they would have been gone from the race by now. Also, the exit polls from yesterday’s election clearly The truth is that Obama’s long time friendship and association tells you a lot about his character and judgment. If Obama was not aware of Rev. Wright’s anti American views about America it shows he is a terrible judge of character. If Obama lied, and did know about Wright’s anti-American views, Obama must have agreed with them and that says a lot about Obama’s character. Not good.

The simple fact is McCain is white and supporting Bush, Obama is black and not supporting anything to do with Bush. So logically anyone who opposes Bush and his “GREAT POLICIES” are going to support anyone against Bush will vote Obama come the general election. I personally am tired of the way this country is being run and we do need a change.
Obama/Clinton ticket all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!

Macain its not like Bush he is a compasionate sensible man. A war Hero
Obama, is unpatriotic and has ties with terrorists. Obama is dangerous fro America’s safety!
OBAMA/HILLARY TICKET? please don’t INSULT more to experienced, qualified Sen Clinton. I really hope she doesn’t consider a VP, that would be demeaning, it will be like THOMAS THE TRAIN(Hillary) PUSHING UPHILL THE LITTLE CABOOSE(Obama)!
Obama is not good for America for any presidential position! period!
John,
I really don’t think that it’s honestly going to matter who wins the DNC. No matter what, America as a whole will vote for the eventual DNC winner. McBush doesn’t stand a chance.
Comment by Black-White-mix You know Obama is white right?
