Out here in the southwest we have no mass transportation like in the big cities back east. Some people are paying over $500 per month in gasoline costs just to drive to work! My husband and I would save nearly $9 per week if we had a gas tax holiday. That would buy us a gallon of milk, a dozen eggs and a loaf of bread at the grocery store (at this week’s prices). Who knows what next week will bring. But we would all benefit by saving on our gasoline purchases.

For many independent truck drivers it might be the only way for some them to stay in business. The oil companies, find the oil, drill, get the oil out of the ground, and then sell it on the NYMEX, or to refiners. Not all oil companies own their own refineries, so they sell the oil to whoever wants it. The major oil companies do own refineries, but they often sell to others, because of refinery volume backups, or because they can get a good price, without the refining costs. Refineries then sell the gasoline to distributors, who sell to the retail market, who in turn sells to us. If Shell, For example is the company that gets the oil out of the ground, they are not necessarily the one selling gasoline to us. The product changes hands going down the line. We can`t blame the oil company for gas cost, when their are so many people involved. Including Government taxation. For Hillary to put a tax on the oil companies, because of windfall profits, she would have to tax every company in the word. Tracking every gallon of gas from well head to pump, would cost more than the tax she wants to get rid of. A gallon of gas from an Exxon pump, could have started out in a Texaco well. Regulation of the high stakes, ten to one odds placed on futures markets by oil speculators would be a good place to start. They have figured out a way to manipulate the market, and will continue to do so. You can bet the big players don`t want the price to come down. If you are making millions off of the futures market, you don`t care what gas cost.

I am a former executive (downstream side) of a major oil company and I believe my opinion is both informed and unbiased.

Right now peope are seeking out gas stations with the lowest price; saving 10 cents/gallon is regarded as quite significant in my area (San Francisco). Its similar throughout the USA.

A price reduction of 10-15 cents/gallon is quite significant and if consumers coupled that with reduction of consumption by an additional 5% that would maintain the discount or even drive it lower. The consumer can simply be wiser and more thrifty about consumption and drive prices lower.

Obama’s opinion is cynical as well as incorrect. Regarding these “experts” on the cable news: they don’t know the consumer gasoline market. I saw one of these on MSNBC this mroning and she did not back up her assertion that this was a political ploy with any facts.

The main point again is the gas tax relief can work if it is coupled with other longer term policies and some consumer wisdom to keep prices down.

Everyone has forgotten about Health Insurance and the war in iraq. the big news of the week has been about suspending the gas tax… for the summer . It’s called HUSH money and designed to keep you quiet for at least for a couple of months.At first I was I was concerned that perhaps there were a lot of Hillary supporters blogging…. then I remembered Lush Rhimbaugh and his operation….. It seems to me that the Republicans are going out of their way to get Hillary nominated, because they believe she would be the BEST opponent against McCain. That would be great ….. getting to pick your own opponent. That’s what they do in wrestling… isn’t it ?

Hillary is an intelligent woman, is very ambitious and presents a very good picture. I just don’t trust her because I watched one debate and she made a statement about health insurance and the next debate she denied saying it. I have to ask what has made her change and be a person that you can take at her word and trust and believe that she is going to do what is best for the country. I have read that when she was in the White House she didn’t let some of the employees have health insurance. If it so important I would think that she could have found a way to allow them to have it.

It seems the American consumer has needed to be wiser and thriftier for the last 35 years. I’m not sure how a temporary and questionable reduction can change that. Gas prices seem to be very much affected by politics, however. Our foreign policy in particular, seems to have impacted gas prices drastically.

The issue goes way beyond the present administration. This is more of a congressional issue. Our congress is more interested with playing politics on the whole issue. And I lay the blame on congress as an institution, not along party lines. A good energy policy would incorporate all the available technologies, with development of new, along with cost-benefit analysis of each, and recognizing limitations. Diversification of energy sources would serve us well.

It’s HILARIOUS to me that none of the comments are related to the issue at hand. I’m no Obama fan, but I think he is right on this one. All the economists agree. This issue has nothing to do with Rev. Wright or sniper fire, etc.

If you drive a four cylinder car and burn less than one gallon a day, and never drive anywhere, but back and forth to work, you almost fit into Obamas figures. Go back through history and see how much Americans have changed their driving habits, according to gas prices. We don`t. We just do without other things, like consumer goods, but we refuse to park our cars. Obama says we will only save 30 bucks over the summer. I figured up how much I would save, and it comes to $106.82. That`s not including the other members of my family who drive. Not everyone lives close to where they work, or even near a town, as far as that goes. Obama has no plan, so all he can do is diminish the importance of the ones that at least try. Do your own math, and then apply it to your own situation.

Yes, certainly it does go well beyond just this administration. Our government and our corporations have known for at least 35 years that this problem has to be dealt with. Someone has to take the lead, though.

Do McCain and Hillary also propose a freeze on the gas price as well? Otherwise, the same thing that happened in Illinois (I didn’t even realize we cut the gas tax) will happen federally.. the prices will just rise to fill the gap. We’re already automatically going to see higher gas prices because its summer in higher demand=higher prices. But encouraging people to drive more is the LAST thing we should do. Obama has had a plan for months before this gas tax stuff came out, but the problem with Obama’s plans are they’re always big picture, and people prefer the gimick plans. Obama has an energy plan based on slashing demand by investing in newer technology.

Why is Mr. Obama misinterpreting Clinton and McCain’s intention for the gas tax cut? It’s not a permanent fix, but a temporary relief. I get excited when the gas price per gal. drops two cents. The idea is a wonderful gesture. It exhibits a since of caring for the people- a way to help save a little money. Obama sure has changed his approach to staying positive. Whose is now being negative and delivering attacks? I detect a little anger in his voice.
