The welfare queen stereotype (1976- ) is one of the pictures that white Americans have in their heads about black women. But a stereotype is not so much based on hard-headed facts as on what it is convenient for the stereotyper to believe. Here the welfare queen shines:

She supports white ideas of blacks as poor, oversexed and not particularly bright.
She takes the blame for the troubles that poor blacks have. That points the blame away from whites, allowing them - and the country at large - to wash their hands of black poverty.
She does not have a bad life: she gets paid for doing nothing!
She gives the Republican party an excuse to cut public spending on the poor, therefore cutting taxes for the rich.
Like any good racist stereotype it is at once racist and yet hides racism!

You would not believe it now, but back in the 1960s the poor were were pictured as being mainly white - as they in fact are! It was only in the 1970s that “black” and “poor” came to mean almost the same thing. As if there were barely any poor whites or well-to-do blacks.

The true face of welfare is not some 19-year-old black woman with three children and one on the way, but a white woman in her 20s with one child.

The term “welfare queen” comes from Ronald Reagan when he ran for president in 1976. He told the story of a black woman who made $150,000 from gaming welfare. She drove a Cadillac, he informed us.

The press tried to find this woman. They wanted to put her on the evening news. They never found her. Reagan had made it up. Yet the idea stuck - because it is a convenient lie for well-to-do whites to believe.

The bit of the stereotype that does have some truth to it, sad to say, is the number of black women who are bringing up children without a husband. In 1994 about half of all households with black children had no father at home. Compare that to one in five for white children - which is how it was for black children once upon a time back in 1960. But that is another story.

I know perfectly well the difference between a racist and a bigot, thank you and if you were to pay attention to my entries on these blogs you would find that there are several points that the Democrats champion that I defend as steadfastly as I do the Republicans. Indeed I have voted for puh-lenty of Democrats in my day as well as Republicans. For me it is not a question of party, nor of race, nor of gender. It’s a question of who I agree with and who I don’t and who I trust most of the three. It is for these reasons why I support McCain and do not support Hillary or Obama.

well of course obama plays basketball and is sports minded,…hes black. according to rev wright, “blacks think with the right side of their brain”. this is why they excell at SPORTS and things such as singing and dancing. wright stated that whites think with the left side of their brian and this is the saide of the brain that allows for the ability to “think logically and to do math”. what study was done that shows ths to be true? now im white, cant sing, cant dance and i dont even like basketball but i do have 3 college degrees and i do like math. well? anybody able to throw some facts and statistics this way? is wright right?

why is that hillary is able to spout off logical answers to all questions posed to her but obama has to take time to think about it before he answers? is he afraid that he may say somethihng that he really doesnt beleive in? when you have to think before you answer i have to think that you arent speaking your true mind.

breanna; This man has been trashed for things that he has never siad, so it would be logical to asume he may be fomulating his asnwers to prevent anyone taking his words and twisting them. In fact, some times blurting out answers show how little you know - As in Hillary and her in favor of the gas tax “holiday”. It has been disputed by many financial experts to have an opposite effect in the long run - it will drive up demand and increase cost.

hillary is very passionate in her answers to any question thrown her way. she knows what shes talking about, she is expressive and is very confident in who she is and what she can do for this country. oabam, on the other hand, speaks softly (no backbone) gets frustrated when he is asked a question that requires too much thought, is not compassionate or confident in his beliefs. he just spent 20 years believeing in something and then, at the drop of a hat, threw those beliefs to the curb. or did he? has he really disowned wright or is he lying? either way, what kind of friend kicks you to the curb after 20 years? what kind of man says he wants change and is honest then doesnt say how he will change anything and lies. obama doesnt strike me as the fighter than hillary is, or like michelle is for that matter. we need a fighter and no one man or woman is capable of changing anything on their own. obama is a wimp, whipped and certainly not a fighter for anyone other than the blacks. his own belief in the black value system ONLY allows him to work for the blacks. oh wait! when he disowned his pastor did he also disown the church and the values that he has believed in for 20 years. of course he and michelle want to move beyond the wright issue but its not gonna go away until he gives an answer. so dont say that he already has, he hasnt. he skirts the issue and says as little as he can and then says that he said it all. he didnt say anything. i look forward to the next battle. perhaps ayers or rezco or his muslim terrorist friends and backers or farrakan and the million man march and wait! does everyone know that obama disowned his brother mark? mark refused to become africanized and stay in kenya. obama stated that he could no more disown…than he can a family member but lo and behold he disowned a brother. what a liar.

You obama supporters are missing the point. You people are stuck on black and white! Race isn’t the issue. The issue is class! obama carried a majority of the working class voters (those earning below $50,000/year) in “3″ of the 29 states he won. If obama was a white candidate he would also be loosing the black working class voters (those earning below $50,000/year). Make no mistake about it, obama is pandering to his rich white liberal base when he says “no” to a summer gas tax break!
