McCain blasts Bush admin. errors on “mission accomplished” anniversary

Cleveland, OH — As Democrats use the fifth anniversary of President Bush’s infamous “Mission Accomplished” Iraq speech to blast Sen. John McCain, the presumptive GOP nominee distanced himself from the phrase and condemned what he says was an atmosphere that contributed to the use of that banner.

“To state the obvious, I thought it was wrong at the time. I thought phrases like ‘a few dead-enders,’ ‘last throes,’ all of those comments contributed over time to the frustration and sorrow of Americans because those statements and comments did not comport with the facts on the ground,” McCain said at a media availability Thursday. “I complained loud and long that the strategy was failing and we couldn’t succeed…I was one of the strongest advocates, of changing to adopt the surge, an advocate for General (David) Petraeus, and I think that history will judge me that I thought it was wrong and I knew what was right.”

Asked if Bush bore responsibility for the placement of the “Mission Accomplished” banner posted above him at the speech, McCain took a big picture approach.

“Do I blame him for that specific banner? I have no knowledge of that. I can’t blame him for that. But I do, do say statements were made-’a few dead-enders,’ ‘last throes’…(that) were contradicted by the facts on the ground,” McCain said, rebuking famous quotes by former Defense Secretary Don Rumsfeld and Vice President Dick Cheney respectively.

While April was the bloodiest month for U.S. troops in Iraq in more than six months, McCain touted recent progress, criticizing a BBC reporter who premised her question by stating that there had been little political progress in Iraq.

“I always said there was going to be ups and downs. But to make a statement that there has not been political progress does not comport with the facts on the ground as I know them. And frankly those facts are very clear–that political progress has been very significant. Maybe you or others don’t think so? I respectfully disagree with that assumption and I think most objective observers believe that there has been significant political progress,” McCain said.

Though when he was asked if he foresees a day when he would declare the mission in Iraq “accomplished,” he said he would try to be more careful with his words.

“I would hate to use that kind of language, because I think it’s going to be one of these situations which is the classic counterinsurgency, that we’ve seen in conflicts around the world in the past, that there is slow, gradual progress and there is two steps forward and one step back,” McCain said. “I don’t know if you could ever say quote ‘mission accomplished’ as much as you could say ‘Americans are out of harms way.’ And that’s the key to America’s concern is the casualties, the casualties. And that can be accomplished by Iraqi government and military that assume more and more responsibilities on their own and American troops get out of harms way.”

Democrat National Committee Spokeswoman Karen Finney responded to McCain’s comments by accusing him of “blame games.”

John McCain can’t walk away from his misleading rhetoric supporting President Bush’s failed Iraq strategy any more than he can walk away from his comments about keeping our troops in Iraq for 100 years,” Finney said. “This November the choice will be very clear: if you want to get out of Iraq responsibly, save lives and invest in America, vote for a Democrat.”

UPDATE-8 p.m. A Democratic group points out that McCain used the “Mission Accomplished” banner in a 2003 interview to argue that the “major conflict is over.” From a June 11, 2003 Fox News Channel appearance:

CAVUTO: … Senator — after a conflict means after the conflict, and many argue the conflict isn`t over.

MCCAIN: Well, then why was there a banner that said mission accomplished on the aircraft carrier? Look, the — I have said a long time that reconstruction of Iraq would be a long, long, difficult process, but the conflict — the major conflict is over, the regime change has been accomplished, and it`s very appropriate… In two weeks, General Franks is going to come before the Senate Armed Services Committee, and we`re going to have his overall assessment of the conflict. I think that`s entirely appropriate because we`ll be — we`ll be taking up the needs of the Defense Department and the men and women in the military on the Armed Services Committee. But I`m looking for an overall review of the conflict, what we did right, what we did wrong, and what the needs are, including the issue of weapons of mass destruction. I remain confident that we will find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

We know the banner displayed on the ship was for the mission accomplished by the ship.
It was for them. They were done.

A new GOP Judas:

JOHN McCAIN is now like Judas to Bush?

Unfortunately, John McCain has no choice politically but to distance himself from President Bush who has an approval rating of something like 21%. Also unfortunately it comes on the heels of Obama distancing himself from J. Wright, the bigotted racist, so it has the appearance of turning on him in a similar fashion. However, Senator McCain has always opposed President Bush on certain topics, so that shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone, unlike Obama and his pastor. I happen to think Senator McCain is correct about Iraq…and it’s tough language to hear at this point in time. I also agree with previous post that Mission Accomplished was probably for the benefit of the sailors who had, indeed, accomplished their mission. If this is all they’ve got, we’ll be calling him President-elect McCain in November.

Wow.!!!! If a white guy said that he’d be lynched.
So, congress is now admitting they pushed ethanol too much and it is causing the food prices going up. Well duh. Who are these people that think they know everything and supposed to be our leaders and law makers. toss out this dem. congress.

Let me tell you “mission accomplishment” was for all of America. My dear friend President Bush would not have when arond the world to give a speech about liberating a nation to a group of sailors on a ship and televise it to the Nation. Please go ahead an accept this mistake; we will not let it happen again. I Promise.

Hillary on OReilly now.

Comment by Senator Clinton = Senator Palpatine

The “Mission Accomplished” banner, whether the ship used it for its own accomplishment or not (that is the first time I have heard this story; sounds like revisionist history… ;) is not relevant: Bush and team obviously used it for their own purpose. Perhaps the ships captain insisted that Bush put on a fighter pilot’s jumpsuit as well?

Clearly the Bush team is incompentent on the PR and positioning of this sorry episode.

LOL! The Republicans are a joke…

The Rebublicans created the most debt in the HISTORY of this country!

The Rebublicans inherited a surplus, yet managed to create a defecit!

The Rebublicans showed the world how incompetent they were during 9-11 and followed that up with even more incompetence during the Katrina crisis!

The Rebublicans was (and still is) at the helm when the housing industry nearly collapsed…. yes, we have a Republican President in charge, so there is no wonder that we’ve seen the most home foreclosers that this country has seen in it’s HISTORY!

The Republican nominee (John McCain) wanted to sit on the sidelines and watch thousands of people lose their homes without any plan to assist…… Oh, yeah, he only decided to say he’ll help when he was criticised for doing NOTHING! LOL!

The Rebublicans took this country to WAR in Iraq because of weapons of mass destruction……opps…….to liberate the Iraqi people……….opps………….. to fight terrorist that didn’t exist in Iraq before the U.S. invasion. :)

McCain says we’ll stay there for a 100 years! And he was giddy about it!

This is the same man that described his IRAN foreign policy like this” Bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb IRAN” Talk about stuck on stupid.

The Republicans forced Admiral Fallon out because he refused to go along with their plans to wage war with IRAN. I told you clowns that Gen. Patreous was a yes man and his capital hill testimony on Iraq was his way of supporting George Bush and his administrations war plans….. and what do you know Gen. Patreous is promoted to Admin Fallons vacated position. Now, they can wage war with Iran and spend trillions of dollars of tax payers money on ill-advised wars like Iraq! Oh, well, it’s only money that’s going up in smoke; It’s not like the Republicans really need to spend those trillions of dollars on a country called the United states of America!

The Big Bankers need YOU (the dimwits) to put that war mongering John McCain in the white house to execute the plan of operation destroy economy! The economy will collapse and you’ll see our second depressoin, which will create huge government reforms and give the Big Bankers even more power. Yeah, the Big Bankers already own this country and they are only going to get more power when the Republicans are done. Oh, that’s right, the Republicans have already started to give the Federal Reserve more power! Imagine, a private Bank like the Federal Reserve Bank basically runs this country!! That’s the capitalist way, big business running the government and keeping the American people impovished…… go McCain!

I’m glad to see Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton playing their role. You don’t think Bill Clintons is dumb do you…. his assinine remarks has a purpose and it’s called put John McCain in the white house to destroy the economy and this country! You Republicans have an friend in Bill and Hillary Clinton but you didn’t even know it… well, the poor slobs that are being manipulated didn’t know it. :)

Maybe John McCain will ask Hillary to be his running mate! They have a lot in common. :)

McCain wants to seperate himself from President Bush, unless he denounce and repudiates him he can forget it! LOL! He’s the second coming of Bush, but only worse because he has no clue about the economy and is an even bigger war mongering maniac than Bush.

I would say that, if we were to completely investigate, and convict every corrupt politician in our federal Government, The White house, and the halls of Congress would stand silent, and empty. They would all be in Federal Prison. For us the think any of them are going to be squeaky clean is a fairy tale, to make ourselves feel better. The question remains, which of these three have the most skeletons buried in their backyard? So far the Democrats have more bones exposed, and they don`t even know where to start digging in McCains yard. They are still to busy bashing Bush. I am afraid that, by the time we have a new President, we may know so much about him/her, we will hate and distrust our new leader so much we will be ready to impeach on day one.

I have always been a strong supporter of President Bush and deep down believe his convictions and direction are well placed, that said, I do agree with McCain and to McCain’s credit, his experience both in Vietnam and as a leader Naval officer speaks volumes about his clarity and wisdom throughout t his whole saga; I had only wished that President Bush had paid more attention to McCain and less to Rumsfeld.

In the end, no matter what people say and what polls show, Bush will always have my respect for sticking with his convictions and his commitment to fight terrorism head on even at the expense of his own popularity here and abroad; something that Carter and Clinton were too cowardly to ever do because they were more concerned about their popularity than the long term well being of Americans and our interests.

A Judas Goat, to make a promise to a friend and then renege is despicable and American hate traitors, they hate disloyal people and they (the traitors) in the end will never be trust by anyone ever again. That is the traitors’ legacy.

First Richardson and now Joey Andrew, I wonder if they realize that people right now the Obama handlers are clapping them on the back, but we all know traitors are never ever near the top of the powerful people once the person is in power….. Because they have been proven untrustworthy….

The most important value we hold true for ourselves and other is our word…

So, I hope the voters in North Carolina and Indiana show their disapproval of this kind of gutter politics displayed by the Obama campaign and vote overwhelmingly for H.R. Clinton.

And the hypocrite Obama, his promise of no politics as usual in Washington LOL

Judas, Someone who betrays under the guise of friendship and instead of typing that whole definition, we just have to say he is a Judas because everyone understands that definition.

I know their is a relationship between Jesus and Judas, but in no way is anyone comparing any of these candidates to Jesus nor could we compare any human to Jesus so do not get to upset…

And you are right to surmise that Judas did not have any choice since it was written. But who is to say that our scripts in life are not already written or agreed upon before we were all born also, in some religions it is called karma…

But when we use Judas it is more devastating, however the word backstabber reminds us more of Caesar and Brutus which is not so devastating…

To any Romney, Huckabee, Thompson, Guiliani, etc. and McCain supporters:

As someone who is a relative newby in politics, I was elected as a delegate from my county to attend the Washington State Convention the end of this month. Even though Romney had suspended by the time my state had its caucus and primaries, I went anyway to “try to force McCain to be more conservative.”

I have not given up on that goal. However, as I watch the Democrats nearly implode over their prolonged battle (and it doesn’t help with the lack of character for both their candidates), I just wanted to make sure that all conservatives stay involved in the process.

Just google Ron Paul Nevada Missouri convention (or anything similar- this site won’t let me post others) and check out things like:

elections.foxnews.com/2008/04/27/ron-paul-supporters-buck-nevada-state-gop-convention/all-comments/#comments

ronpaulforpresident2008.com/blog/node/92

In that last one, look at the things they are proud of- getting 111 out of 137 delegates from St. Charles County in Missouri as Ron Paul supporters; getting the platform changed to be against the war, the Patriot Act, the Federal Reserve, etc.

If your county still has conventions or caucuses to elect delegates to your state conventions, please show up or the Republican National Convention in St. Paul will be just as bloody as the Democrats in Denver when the Ron Paul folks hijack it.

I can tell you that in my county almost one half of the delegates to state are Paul supporters.

We ain’t got this won yet, and this could really mess things up. Wonder why this is getting so little MSM attention? They want it to happen.

I used to think I was one, untill I saw some women protesting in the streets of some big city(this was several years ago) wearing some pink t-shirts saying I had an abortion and am pround of it! It made me sick, no one should be proud of having an abortion that is just warpped, and they called thier selfs democrates,I watched the democratic party and they seem to be so angry and ugly with thier thoughts. They will not work with Bush on anything and what have they accomplished in the past 2 almost three years since they took the house and senate besides not funding our troops, they did have an Idian coin made, how lucky we are to have them to care so much about coins when we are at war(go figure), they only care about taking back the country, they sure don’t seem to care about us, they can’t get over their selfs long enough to care……..

The democrates are tearing each other up,(I guess now they know how Bush has felt for the past 7 years),and the republican party is keeping quite, we should voice our opinions more, we need to debate the liberals,it seems to me the the democratic party is so far left, are there any real democrates left?

I agree with you Holly, It seems the democratic party has been taken over by the far left Liberals who’s only accomplishment has been the BLAME GAME, all of our problems are either Bush’s fault or Americans fault. I’m Fed up with the party. I will never put party loyality over the security of our country. I think Dean and others are under estimating Hillary supporters, they are so far left and so out of touch but they will have an awakening come November, if they give the nominee to Obama..I for one will leave the party…and will vote for John McCain and every democrat I know will do the same.

Yeah, don’t be getting any grand ideas like we are living in anything other than a glorified police state. And as long as you swear your allegiance to the New World Order, and you are prepared to renounce all religious practices - everything should be cool - maybe even a nice job as a camp guard at one of the Fema Camps. Once the power elite picks the next president - the sheep will be allowed to vote. We vote on computers that are hacked and have a back door. The truth isn’t pretty.

They’ve been planning this for a while - and I’m sure we will get used to martial law.

As someone who’s never voted for a Democrat, I do admit I have a very strong bias against the Democratic Party and it’s platform. Since I’m “on the outside looking in” I’m really amazed at the comments regarding Obamas far left leanings and his ties to friends and organizations that are outright Anti-American and dangerous to this country. The reason for my amazement is that people within the Dem. party couldn’t see this coming. Just look at the DEM members in the House & Senate, and they’re overwhelming support for Obama. Remember people, I didn’t vote THEM in, you did.

I really think that FDR would be rolling in his grave if he could see the Democrat Party today. The Democrats have a real problem with actually telling the American People the truth.

As a former Dem insider and someone with contacts in the Dem Party, I can tell you nothing surprises me. Ever since the Great Society programs and the Vietnam War, the Dems have become more and more far Left. All politicians are out of touch but the Dems are particulary hypocritical. Like the academics and the media, they claim to care about the people but they look down on whom they perceive as the unwashed masses and think only they know what’s best for us. Yes, they are
