No Spin Zone: Hillary Takes On Bill O’Reilly
SOUTH BEND, Ind — For the first time in her long public career, Hillary Clinton sat down with Mr No Spin himself — sparring with Factor host Bill O’Reilly during a feisty interview on everything from raising his taxes and the effectiveness of torture to the dangers of Iran and Afghanistan and how to define sanctuary cities.
But the news was mostly in her reaction to the latest controversy over comments by Rev Jeremiah Wright, Barack Obama’s former pastor, including equating the US with al Qaeda and speculating that the federal government might be behind HIV/AIDS. Obama distanced himself fully from Wright yesterday, and on the Factor, Sen Clinton agreed with his decision.
Asked about Wright’s comments, she said “I think it’s offensive, and outrageous, and uh, you know, I’m going to express my opinion. Others can express theirs, but it is part of just an atmosphere that we’re in today where all kinds of things are being said, and people have to decide what they believe. And I sure don’t believe the United States government was behind AIDS.”
Aides say she had fun with the verbal jousting, which you can watch tonight and tomorrow night at 8pm. It was definitely on her mind at the next event in Portage, IN — where she plugged the sit-down before a skeptical union crowd . “I just taped an interview that’ll be on Fox tonight with Bill O’Reilly,” she said, drawing a decidedly mixed reaction. Hillary grinned at the response, saying “hey, I’m running for the toughest job in the world!”
“We got into a little back and forth,” she said, “because he said ‘you’re going to raise my taxes, aren’t you?’ I said ‘I sure am.’ If you make more than $250,000 you’re going to go back to paying the tax rates you paid in the 1990’s.” Standing up to O’Reilly was obviously more popular with the Democrats in attendance; check out their reaction above…

On Reverend Wright:
“Well, I take offense at it. I think it’s offensive and outrageous. And, you know, I’m going to express my opinion, others can express theirs. But, you know, it is — it is part of, you know, just an atmosphere that we’re in today where all kinds of things are being said.
And people have to, you know, decide what they believe. And I sure don’t believe the United States government was behind AIDS.”
On gas prices
“But I’m trying to lay the groundwork so that when I’m president, we can get in there and say this has been going on way too long. I also want to take on OPEC. You know, OPEC is a cartel, it’s a monopoly.”
“Nine of the 13 biggest oil-producing countries that are in OPEC are also members of the WTO. I would file complaints. I would also change the law so that citizens and businesses could file antitrust actions. We’re going to begin to hold them accountable.”
On taxes and the economy:
“In the ’90s, we had one of the strongest, fairest economies we’ve ever had. Yes, did people like you and me pay a little bit more? We sure did. But so did everybody else benefit, because middle class taxes stayed pretty even.”
“People are net losers under the Bush economy. They were net winners under the Clinton economy. We’re going to bring back a good, positive economy for the vast majority of Americans.”
On Iran:
“If Iran were to ever obtain a nuclear weapon, that would be unbelievably bad for us and the world. And I’m going to do everything I can to prevent that from ever happening.
On pulling troops from Iraq:
“First of all, I believe that our military has fulfilled all their military missions. There’s no doubt in my mind. They got rid of Saddam Hussein, which they were asked to do. They gave the Iraqis free and fair elections. They gave the Iraqi government the space and time to make the decisions that only the Iraqis can make for themselves.
There is no military solution to what we face in Iraq, which is unprecedented. It is dangerous, it is unstable. I have said that I will begin withdrawing our troops because I believe two things.
Number one, because there is no military solution, we have got to emphasize the political and the diplomatic. And because as we withdraw them, that’s the only way to focus the Iraqi government on what they must do for themselves.
I think it’s somewhat open to debate as to whether Iran really wants to see us withdraw, and here’s why. They have been an equal opportunity supporter of the militias, of the insurgents, of anybody who would pick up arms against the United States.
They would have to begin to pick sides. That will, I believe, catalyze Iraqi nationalism. Remember, we have a Persian state, the Iranians; an Arab state, the Iraqis. There will be a lot of conflict between the Iranians and the Iraqis moving forward if the United States is on the sidelines, in stead of in the middle.”
On interrogation / water boarding:
“Well, Bill, first of all, of the three of us who are running for president, each of us has decided we will not condone and sanction torture. Obviously Senator McCain knows a whole lot more about this than both of us put together. I know from firsthand discussions with people who have responsibilities for extracting information and getting good intelligence out of those who are our enemies that torture doesn’t work.
On Immigration:
“It’s broken. I share the frustration. I have voted for tougher border controls. I’ve voted to put more money, more personnel, even a physical barrier where appropriate. I’m 100 percent in favor of tightening our borders, of enforcing the laws against employers, of going after the kind of abuses that we see in the job market, of making it clear that we have got to figure out what we’re going to do with people.”

The “poor” in the United States would be considered upper middle class compared to the rest of the world. Most of those are poor, due to their own poor choices. We have plenty of “handout” safety nets for them.

Obama doesn’t have the balls to have an honest discussion about issues.
All he does, all he can do, is to give stump speech at the campaign rally to rant his smears at Hillary and mccain. He knows he say anything unchallenged on the spot when he’s the only person speaking through the mic. What is your particular problem?
A great leader with conscience and courage would have stood up and faced down anyone who engages in the conduct of Rev. Wright. I expect a president of the United States to have the strength of character to denounce and disown enemies of America — foreign and domestic — and yes, even his friends and confidants when they get seriously out of line. His recent condemnations of Wright’s hate-filled speeches are, in my opinion, a case of too little, too late. In today’s vernacular, he threw Rev. Wright under the wheels of the bus to keep his presidential campaign rolling. For shame.

He can not solve the long term issue of gas prices, in fact he has no solutions or plan for any long term fixes for any issue, period. Just no experience to lead.

Wow - I am a right wing Republican and have been since I started voting at age 18. There is no way I would vote for McCain - too soft, too ish, too not me. So, as a biracial person who couldn’t (I mean absolutely CAN”T stand Bill Clinton), there was no WAY I would vote for Hilary. I figured I would vote for Obama - at least we would get a biracial president. However, after watching her hold her own with my fave, Bill O’, and listening to her grasp on policy, I would rather see her in office than Obama any day (and as stated, I can’t stand McCain). If we are going to have a candidate who supports illegal immigration (which I don’t), high taxes (which I don’t), and socializing health care (which I don’t), it might as well be the only one of the three with any cahonas -I am thinking I am voting for Hilary. Obama should withdraw now!
Did anyone catch that Hillary was blaming the Bush administation for allowing a certain company, I can’t remember where it was, to lose jobs to the Chinese? It turns out that Bill Clinton actually signed off on the deal to sell the company to the Chinese when he was President. Doesn’t she or her staff do any research before she speaks, or does she just think people will not dig into the details? She really need to be more careful when she speaks.
With that being said, I feel she did a very good job with O’reilly. I feel Obama may be in trouble come Indiana, and even though Obama will take NC, it won’t be by the margins predicted earlier.
In the end, unless Obama stumbles terribly, he will still get the Democratic nomination.

I too loved Romney and was disappointed when he didn’t make it. He was definitley my man - after he left the race, the bloom was definitely off the rose for me. I must confess - I am a bit of a rebel.
