When you scream to your supporters about our dependence on foreign oil think about this. If you want to drive the price of oil down quickly announce to the world that we are drilling in anwar. The oil speculators will be in a frenzy and prices will go down. But I know you won’t because the looney left of your party will abbandon you and think you are against the environment. Anwar drilling will not hurt the environment and any expert in the field will tell you that. So stop the rhetoric about a holiday gas tax relief and do something for the long term. Band aids are not the answer. A sound energy policy is. We never had one and as long as politicians use energy as a campaign issue we will never have one. Just one more thing I wonder Hillary if you are aware that millions of people have pension funds tied to oil company stock so when you continue to want to bring them down think of the millions of peoples retirements you are damaging. Hey Ralphy your responce was pure bs. I do agree we need to build new refineries. But we need to have higher standards resulting in better fuel. My friends in the oil business tell me Anwar isn’t worth the time and effort. Besides the amount of time it would take to come on line drilling in the cold is cost prohibitive. Had you driven across the US lately you would have seen all the new wells being drilled right now. If you had any brains you realize what happens when we deregulate everything. $2 gallon gas in Mexico. Name one thing where the price went down after we deregulated it. There are some things that are better off being run by the goverment providing strict standards are met. Hillary is still the best one left in the race.

This is nothing but another cheap campaign gimmick, designed to confuse the electorate. What exactly would temporarily suspending the gas tax for consumers and businesses do to solve the underlying issues that have lead us to this point. Our overall economy is in dire straights, because gutless politicians like Hillary Clinton have failed to address problems that have been building for decades. This is true in many sectors of our economy, including energy. Not only have these so called leaders failed to act, they have first and most importantly failed in their responsibility to educate the American people. In the short term we need more refineries, and most importantly we need to reduce our dependence on hydrocarbon based fuels and develop alternative energy sources.

Hillary’s band aide approach is an example of the old politics. If you want to do something for American Families Hillary, address the real issues and while you’re at it do something to significantly reduce the property tax burden in New York State and in the rest of the country. You and your fellow members of Congress could even set aside a brief moment in your busy schedules to eliminate the use of Member Items and other forms of pork barrel spending.

Why doesn’t cutting the gas tax this summer make sense? It’s Econ 101 tax incidence theory: if the supply of a good is more or less unresponsive to the price, the price to consumers will always rise until the quantity demanded falls to match the quantity supplied. Cut taxes, and all that happens is that the pretax price rises by the same amount. The McCain gas tax plan is a giveaway to oil companies, disguised as a gift to consumers. Why cant we wake up and see that this proposed break would essentialy break the back of most hard working Americans!

And anyone that believes the Government can do a better job running anything, is clearly a Big Government Liberal. Our Government and it’s perfect record makes it impossible to trust it with running anything, not even a third grade bake sale.

What a horrible idea! Making the oil companies pay the taxes only brings the promise that they will raise the price per gallon to appropriately match their desired profit margin, and then when the “holiday” ends they can keep the price per gallon and add taxes back on top of it. This effectively raises the price of gas even more. Thank you Senator Clinton. P.S. Thank you Nancy Pelosi for following through on your proposed plan to limit the price of gas that got the Dems control of the house and senate. Since they have taken over gas is up 60%!

Living on the coast and large vacation area - cutting the gas tax make sense, coastal communites depend on tourism. Also, for people who are required to drive as part of their job, it is a loss of money these days. As the gas prices continue to rise, everything in the grocery stores due, over 4.00 for milk,etc. We MUST do something and something quickly and then once in office they can go for more agressive actions on big oil companies - in the mean time everyone is suffering…it doesn’t make any difference who does this, so for gosh sakes - stopping the petty attacks on the candidates and thing about your fellow Americans suffering with this issue. Even if it is a temp fix, at least it will keep more money in your pockets for the time being. Good Job Hillary - others just talk about it and you are trying to get something done.

Clinton-McCain gas tax holiday slammed as bad idea By Alister Bull

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A gas tax holiday proposed by U.S. presidential hopefuls John McCain and Hillary Clinton is viewed as a bad idea by many economists and has drawn unexpected support for Clinton rival Barack Obama, who also is opposed.

“Score one for Obama,” wrote Greg Mankiw, a former chairman of President George W. Bush’s Council of Economic Advisers. “In light of the side effects associated with driving … gasoline taxes should be higher than they are, not lower.”

Republican McCain and Democrat Clinton, who is battling Obama for their party’s nomination, both want to suspend the 18.4-cents-per-gallon federal gas tax during the peak summer driving months to ease the pain of soaring gas prices. The tax is used to fund the Highway Trust Fund that builds and maintains roads and bridges.

Economists said that since refineries cannot increase their supply of gasoline in the space of a few summer months, lower prices will just boost demand and the benefits will flow to oil companies, not consumers.

“You are just going to push up the price of gas by almost the size of the tax cut,” said Eric Toder, a senior fellow at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center in Washington.

Obama criticized the plan as pure politics and said the only way to lower the price of gas is to use less oil.

“It would last for three months and it would save you on average half a tank of gas, $25 to $30. That’s what Senator Clinton and Senator McCain are proposing to deal with the gas crisis,” he said on Tuesday in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

“This isn’t an idea designed to get you through the summer, it’s an idea designed to get them through an election.”

This stance has prompted Clinton to accuse him of being out of touch with ordinary Americans as she campaigns ahead of key presidential nomination contests in North Carolina and Indiana on May 6.

CLINTON AT THE PUMP

The New York senator was commuting to work in South Bend, Indiana, on Wednesday and planned to pump gas at a gas station to draw attention to her plan to suspend the gas tax on consumers and businesses.

“We will pay for it by imposing a windfall profits tax on the big oil companies,” she said on Tuesday. “They sure can afford it. This is a big difference in this race. My opponent opposes giving consumers a break from the gas tax but I believe the American people are being squeezed pretty hard.”

The cost of a gallon of gasoline has touched $4 in some parts of the country as oil prices nudge toward a record $120 per barrel, hammering drivers at a time when higher food prices and falling home values are already crimping U.S. consumers.

Many economists implicitly agreed with Obama and said the McCain-Clinton gas tax plan sent the wrong signal on energy efficiency and was at odds with their pledges to combat climate change by encouraging lower U.S. carbon emissions.

“I think it is a very bad idea,” said Gilbert Metclaf, a economics professor at Tufts University currently working with the National Bureau of Economic Research.

“If we want people to invest in energy-saving cars, we need some assurance that the higher price paid for these cars is going to pay off through fuel savings,” he said. “It is a very short-sighted, counterproductive proposal.”

Economists also saw it is a poor way of getting money to the households that need it most and warned that it might end up in the cash tills of the oil companies.

“If you want to provide households tax relief, a direct rebate … is more effective. Not all of the tax relief from a gas tax holiday will be passed on to consumers. Some will likely be kept by refiners,” Mankiw said in an e-mail response.

New York Times columnist Paul Krugman was similarly underwhelmed: “It’s Econ 101: the tax cut really goes to the oil companies,” he wrote on his blog on Tuesday.

This is a great idea!!!

Why stop with the oil companies….We can also go after the “wind fall” profits of pharmaceutical companies…which the last time that I looked, were 2.5 times what the oil companies are making…to pay for a national health care plan. Then we can take the “wind fall” profits of Microsoft and Apple to finance public education….the possibilities are endless!!!.

Obama, Clinton, and McCain are getting alot of questions about high gasoline prices.

TV news people are talking about possible $4/gallon gas this summer.

Environmental extremism has alot to do with these high prices.

Global Warming is a hoax and a false religion the roots of which come from some liberal political groups

hatred of capitalism and freedom and modern life as we know it for polluting the world and the

atmosphere and a false belief that this is causing worldwide climate change.

Most rational minded scholars, scientists and meteorologists do not share this radical politically motivated

view of climate change and make a convincing scientific argument against it.

Lawsuits filed by so-called environmentalists against every effort by energy providers to bring

fuel to market have driven up consumer prices to record levels and will go even higher.

Please understand that you can combat this trend by becoming educated on this subject and demand

that politicians denounce Global Warming and put a stop to dangerous environmental extremism

and environmental lawsuits against energy providers. Do a Google search on Global Warming Debunked

to get started. Write letters to your school board and let them know you don’t want your children

indoctrinated with only one side of the global warming debate. Democrats attack energy providers

for making a profit instead of admitting their own extreme and false environmental ideology is

the true cause of todays high costs of doing business. Democrats are against oil, natural gas,

coal, and nuclear energy development in our own country. Make no mistake about it, Democrats

are enemies of energy producers and the buck stops at their desks for our current economic situation.

Sen Clinton is promising a gas tax cut but Obama says no. She is promising a “holiday” relief now, so that we can pay(nightmare) for it in the end. If we take the gas tax cut, we would be taking away from monies used for our streets, roads and bridges, (remember the bridge in Minneapolis that collaspe?) The oil companies will not suffer, they will just hike the prices even more. More government control on energy? You must be kidding. Show me where the government can run anything efficiently. Free markets take care of themselves it is called supply and demand. The demand is extremely high and will continue to be for the near future. You mention 2.00 a gallon gas in Mexico as your example . If you bother to research this you wouldn’t even use rthis as your so called proof government works better. The system is corrupt and going broke last time I checked. They also don’t have the same environmental restrictions like we do that drives the price through the roof. Do you have any idea how many different mixtures of gas there are in California alone? A t least twenty last count. That’s government control for you . If you remember and I am sure you don’t that after hurricane Katrina hit the president issued an executive order to suspend all the different mixes to speed up the refining of gasoline.And what happened was prices went down . McCain And Hillary are soft pedalling this gas price issue.

Gas prices are more than a dollar per gallon more than last year. Gas company profits are soaring. Why Hillary and McCain can’t put this together escapes me. Everybody know that Bush is in bed with the Gas companies. The Bush family is robbing this country a gallon at a time.

I can sort of understand McCain’s position. He needs the Bush supporters to win the election, so he will not propose anything substanial that will hurt his chances in getting that support.

I doubt that the US would benefit that much. Most of the oil consumption in the future is going to go to China and India, so unless we regulated it better, our oil would also go there, Shell oil is a Dutch company, not a US company.
We should produce more oil and mandate that excess profits go to alternative energy and our problems would be solved sooner than later.
Look at what already happened to corn as a fuel alternative, pushed by congress, now realized as not cost effective and we have to start all over again. Our government already Subsidizes the oil industry which allows them to have record profits and subsidizes farmers not to grow crops.

More government control on energy? You must be kidding. Show me where the government can run anything efficiently. Free markets take care of themselves it is called supply and demand. The demand is extremely high and will continue to be for the near future. You mention 2.00 a gallon gas in Mexico as your example . If you bother to research this you wouldn’t even use rthis as your so called proof government works better. The system is corrupt and going broke last time I checked. They also don’t have the same environmental restrictions like we do that drives the price through the roof. Do you have any idea how many different mixtures of gas there are in California alone? A t least twenty last count. That’s government control for you . If you remember and I am sure you don’t that after hurricane Katrina hit the president issued an executive order to suspend all the different mixes to speed up the refining of gasoline.And what happened was prices went down . That is an option I wish he would do now. So before you call my point of view Bs do your homework and get your facts straight. Your blinding partisanship gets in the way of common sense. Let me end this by listing some government run successes for you. Social security, Veterans administration, welfare, medicare just to name a few. Real successes aren’t they?

Carol, john mccain didn’t know how to pay for it. Just like the iraq war, he wants to give the iraqi government a blank cheque for them to drag their feet to come to reconciliation. But where is he going to get money from to finance this in-fighting between the different iraqi factions?

First off, I think obama is UNFIT to be running for president because he has fundamental character flaw. Its really TOO LATE for him to save himself now, however he spins it, or acts in front of the camera for votes. I do not claim to have extensive knowledge of the “oil business” as some of the bloggers have professed to… whether the ’summer tax’ plan will work or not iss still questionable but what I do appreciate is the fact that someone is actually thinking of ways to reduce this horrible situation… finally someone has stepped up to the challenge….

Now, in California - the oilcompanies (who continue to reap BILLIONS in windfall profits per month) have started an ad campaign AGAINST the “windfall tax”… they obviously do NOT want to reduce their money into their pockets… the US is just seeing the hike in gas - this has been in Europe for years and we are just now catching up… this IS a world wide issue and not just the US… so it is the Oil Companies behind this and not the issue of drilling in the US (Alaska to be exact)…let’s just ruin another state and destroy an ecological life left on this planet. Way back, if my memory serves me well - the oild companies lobbied for tax breaks etc. so they could fund new exploration for oil and for new alternative energy to be used and they said they would be able to keep our rates down by getting this break….they said they need money to do this??? I’ve said before this is a stupid idea for many reasons. But not only is it economically stupid… it is just.. stupid. There is no windfall profits tax Regan got rid of that years ago, Bush isn’t going to sign into law new taxes. So her plan is basically putting the carriage before the horse (which we’ll all be riding if this were to actually pass, and gas companies just raise the prise of gas both because we are increasing demand without increasing supply and because they’re not going to take pay cuts, they’ll just raise the gas price to pay for their higher tax rate) But its cute politics and it’ll fool a couple people. There’s always a politician who calls for this when its election time.. Bob Dole did it too.

There are a lot of reason why we choose to vote for one candidate or the other. Conservatives like to divert discussion about issues to something else because they know they have been wrong on the issues. Conservatives don’t care about issues. They just want their guy to win, no matter what.

Conservatives really do like John McCain. They have had to settle.

I am voting for Obama for one issue and one issue alone. The IRAQ war.

As I as I respect John McCain, he is wrong about the war. We have been the too long. We have wasted enough of our troops. We are wasting our tax dollars. John McCain only supports this war because he is embarrassed by his party’s handling of the war and wants to make good on a bad situation..
