McCain lays into Obama on taxes, says he opened door on Wright issue
done
Miami, FL — Sen. John McCain continues to ride a very thin line on the Jeremiah Wright controversy, reiterating today that while he will not make an issue of Barack Obama’s pastor, he will not be surprised if others do.
“I believe that Senator Obama does not share those views. But Senator Obama himself says it’s a legitimate political issue so I would imagine that many other people would share that view and it will be in the arena,” McCain said during a Miami-area media availability, alluding to comments Obama made during his Fox News Sunday interview today. The Illinois Democrat told FNS that “the fact that he is my former pastor I think makes it a legitimate political issue.”
McCain seized on those comments during his response today to questions about the North Carolina Republican Party’s decision to air an attack ad using controversial Wright sermons despite his opposition. McCain said he still disagrees with the ad but he does not believe the state party should face any repercussions, he no longer wishes “to be the referee” in the dispute and is ready to “move on to the major challenges of this country.”
The Wright-related remarks also came during an availability in which McCain lit up Obama as “totally insensitive” to poor people because of his gas tax holiday opposition, “out of touch” on the economy, as well as having “very little, if any, experience or knowledge” about the security concerns of Israel and the situation in the Middle East.
During his first response, McCain got in a three-for; hitting Obama on his infamous “bitter” remarks, pointing out offensive Wright comments and sending the message that his Democratic rival opened the door a bit on Wright.
“I’ve stated my position very clearly that I don’t like the ad. I was interested that this morning Senator Obama said it was a legitimate political issue. If he believes that, then it will probably be a political issue. I saw yesterday some additional comments that have been revealed by Pastor Wright, one of them comparing the United States Marine Corps with Roman Legionnaires who were responsible for the death of our Savior, I mean being involved in that. It’s beyond belief. And then of course saying that Al Qaeda and the American flag were the same flags. So I can understand, I can understand why people are upset about this. I can understand why Americans, when viewing these kinds of comments, are angry and upset. Just like they view Senator Obama’s statements about why people turn to their faith and their values. He believes that it’s out of economic concerns. We all know it’s out of a fundamental belief, a fundamental faith in this country and its values and its principles. Again, Senator Obama, out of touch. I can’t control, and will not in future, control. I will voice my opinion. And I will continue to say that I think that ad should not be run. But I won’t continue to try to be the referee here.”
For it’s part, the Obama campaign immediately launched into McCain for the comments accusing the Republican of breaking his word on promises to run a respectful campaign.
“By sinking to a level that he specifically said he’d avoid, John McCain has broken his word to the American people and rendered hollow his promise of a respectful campaign,” said Obama campaign Spokesman Hari Sevugan. “With each passing day, John McCain acts more and more like someone who’s spent twenty-six years learning the divisive, distracting tactics of Washington. That’s not the change that the American people are looking for.”
While he danced around on the Wright issue, McCain had no qualms Sunday about attacking Obama on national security and the economy. Some of his greatest hits:
- On his gas tax holiday proposal: “One of the proposals that I made recently was to give those low income Americans a brief holiday from the increase in gas taxes that they are paying everyday at the gas pump. I noticed again today that Senator Obama repeated his opposition to giving low income Americans a tax break, a little bit of relief so they can travel a little further and a little longer, and maybe have a little bit of money left over to enjoy some other things in their lives. It is an obvious fact that low income Americans probably bear a disproportionate burden of the gas tax because they usually have to go further to work and many times they drive older automobiles. The special interests have reacted to this proposal as if it was the end of Western Civilization as we know it…obviously Senator Obama does not understand that what this would be a nice thing for Americans and the special interests should not be dictating this policy.”
- Responding to Obama’s attack on FNS saying his “conscience took flight” when McCain reversed his view on the Bush tax cuts: “I’m proud of my record of fiscal discipline. I am proud of my record of trying to reduce the burden of taxes on the American people and Senator Obama wants to raise the capital gains tax, which would have a direct effect on 100 million Americans. That means he has no understanding of the economy and that he is totally insensitive to the hopes and dreams and ambitions of 100 million Americans who would be effected by his almost doubling of the capital gains tax-not to mention his desire to increase the cap on social security, which again would have a devastating tax increase effect on American families. He is out of touch with the economy.”
- On understanding the concerns of Jewish voters and Israel: “(Israel) is under incredible threat, the Iranians, Hamas, Hezbollah, all of the other threats that they face, including the president to Iran, that Senator Obama wants to sit down and negotiate with face to face who is dedicated to the extinction of the state of Israel….I have experience and knowledge and background. I have been to Israel many times. I know their leaders. I understand the issues and I know how to ensure the independence and freedom of the state of Israel. Senator Obama has very little, if any, experience or knowledge about the challenges, and they’re complex and difficult, in the region.

Obama seems upset that we notice his questionable background and very radical associates.
HE is the one that sat in the church and HE is the one that made bitter comments and HE is the one that gave $26,000 to a racist church, HE is the one that changed his answer to questions about his pastor many times and HE is the one that always brings up the race issue - AND
he gets mad when we notice! Just vote for me - because I said you should - and you are a racist if you won’t!
Funny how when Obama gets 95% of the black vote - that is OK, BUT when Hillary gets the “white working class”, Catholic, Hispanic - those people are racist. Funny how his campaign says those people would vote for McCain anyway - we don’t expect or need them!
McCain is doing a campaign with respect - he did not do the ad - the GOP party of NC did - too bad that Obama does not like it - I am sure there will be more to come so…
SADDLE UP!!
Senator McCain - I am not a republican but I agreed that Obama and Rev Wright issue is and should be part of the campaign as it goes to show Obama’s character. I really feel that Wright should be investigated by Homeland Security perhaps him and Louis Farrakhan have something going on, when you talk about your military and our flag you are anti-American. Obama has not denouced either of these men and if fact walked in the Million Man March with Farrakhan and today continued to defend this so called Reverend. The ad doesn’t distort the truth and they have right to run it… you graciously requested the stop when you didn’t have to and for that I certainly think you deserve respect. Anyone who votes for Obama should really think how can he support Wright and Farrakhan when he knows the type of statements they make, how can he support any man that disrespects our flag, our servicemen or our country. I am not sure what Americans are thinking when they even consider him. If he is the nominee, there is more than 25% of Hillary supports thta will be voting for you. At least you believe in your country and stand by your believes., I don’t think you would have these type of “friends or uncles”
EST
Say what you want but Obama can not nor will he win the general election if he is in it. You would have to be pretty silly not to see the disaster Obama has with Wright, Ayers and Rezko not to mention his clinging to guns, typical white person and Michelle anti american personality.
It doesn’t take much to see that McCain will become the next President if Obama is in the general election.
I agree with your Bill - now the military voters and families may way in as well against him. He can not win the general election and with more than 25% of the HC voters switching over to McCain or an independent.
Where do you think Obama learn his ways, lets say Wright wake up people before it to late……..
Please for the sake of America………Google “Hatem El-Hady”.
What does everyone think about HatemEl-Hady? Let’s discuss him instead of Wright!
We have less than two weeks to get Obama’s campaign to fall apart! Email all your friends! Let’s send this message to everyone in the country! Please!
Hatem El-Hady!
Please don’t let terrorist buy our President…….God Bless America
Barack Hussain Obama………TERRORIST!………..WE HAVE TO STOP HIM!
ANOTHER SHORT TERM PANDERING TACTIC.
IT IS AMAZING THAT THE TWO MILLIONAIRES CALL OBAMA AN ELITIST.
ONCE AGAIN, LIKE BUSH MCCAIN IS LYING TO THE AMERICAN PUBLIC ABOUT THE TRUE ECONOMIC CONDITION - WE ARE IN A RECESSION!!!!
TRUE ECONOMIC IMPROVEMENTS TO THE MIDDLE CLASS AVERAGE AMERICAN IS ENDING THE WAR AND NOT SPENDING 4 BILLION A WEEK, HAVING THE WEALTHER AMERICANS (MCCAIN AND HILLAEY) PAY PORPORTIONAL TAXES LIKE THE REST OF US AND INVESTING MONEY IN OUR INFASTRUCTURE AND NEW TECHNOLOGIES.
DOING THESE THINGS WILL PUT MONEY INTO THE ECONOMY AND PROVIDE ONGOING RELIEF FOR THE MIDDLE CLASS. NOT A DIVERSION UNTIL NOVEMBER.
OH … AND HILLARY IS SAYING AND AGREEING TO ANYTHING TO GET ELECTED…. SO QUESTION THESE THINGS WHEN HILLARY AND MCCAIN AGREE.
OBAMA ‘08
Molly,
Thank you for your post. Amen
Why is McCain coming up with some lame holiday gas tax proposal for the summer? Because he needs the tax revenues to fund our transportation project needs while he’s in office? Come on… Does he not even know that our DOT is severely strapped in funding the nations infrastructure. Does he already forget about the bridge collapse in Minnesota? Hello, lesson of the day. DOT gets its funding for roadway and bridge projects from our gas taxes… not from our income taxes. Therefore, any reduction in gases means reductions in keeping our bridges and roadways safe, maintained, and at capacity. Does he not realize that this would not just impact the traveling public, but also the hundreds of thousands of construction personnel, engineers, and scientists that are in the industry?
Stop trying to BUY votes by eliminating taxes. WE are not that stupid. And stop trying to spin it by calling Obama “insensitive to the poor”. What a joke… most of the poor drive gas guzzlers. Well so the rich. Duh, they’re called SUVs.
Oh, and then he goes on to talk about special interests? Uh, who do you think is lobbying for the gas tax holiday? Duh, the oil companies who will sell more gas since every economist knows price goes down demand goes up.
McCain… the more you talk the more I’m leaning on leaving the Party. You can beat Obama by speaking your true ideals. Don’t take advantage of all the stupid people in the Party. Just because they don’t know sh@t about s@it doesn’t mean the rest of us don’t.
[...] never mind what the conservatives say, but if Obamessiah says Wright’s fair game, then have at him: Sen. John McCain continues to ride a very thin line on the Jeremiah Wright controversy, [...]
Wow! I honesty think that many of you would commit suicide once Sen. Obama becomes President. Please, don’t do it. I encourage you to get help for your problem.
2 more shootings in S.Chicago today. That makes 47 shooting or stabbings with 15 dead in a week.
Send the military….oh forget it, they are safer in Iraq than Chicago.

OH, just wait… Ever heard of the Keating 5. Don’t worry you will. Got to watch McCain… he’s got some corruption baggage too and it’s bad.
Probably why his second wife (the first one he ditched, very presidential) made him sign a pre-nuptial! What a loser.
Sorry, but the majority of the country has already seen the Wright interview on PBS, and have come to realize that he is not racist. He may be provocative, but he certainly is not racist or anti-American. FOX news and the rest of it’s intellectual lazy media friends have been exposed for their deliberate smear campaign.
When you can’t beat’em on the issues and substance, go for the knees. Is that now the American way?
Technically we are not in a recession. Cool down.

I just watched the Obama interview with Chris Wallace. BHO is a very clever polotician. He was well prepared with his answers to the easy to predict questions that were sure to come from Wallace. Today in particular he used the “non-answer” answers, “sophisticated” logic and hollow distractions to avoid answering several of the questions that zeroed in on who he truly is and what he truly believes in.
The most blaring examples of this were his “explanations”:
1. for his super-liberal voting record, i.e. that those nasty Republican’s pose everything in legislation he votes upon in a way to polarize poor Dem Senators on these votes– (this crap went unchallenged as to the nonsense of that statement…hey, BHO, the Dems control the Senate and you are certainly free to introduce/co-sponsor “bi-partisan” legislation that would gain consensus),
2. for his lack of demonstrated bi-partisan leadership, saying he works closely with a number of Republican Senators on various issues and respected their positions. (despite him throwing Sen Colburn uder the bus recently in yet another moral equivalency attemp that failed),
3. his examples of holding some Republican ideas as “better” such as less regulation and opposition to late term abortions…. the former is a provable lie, the second was, of course, offered with a huge qualifier….. he must think no one actually listens to this crap he spins out, and
4. by saying that most stock holders would not be effected by raising the capital gains tax because they’re holdings are in Tax Deffered accounts, like IRAs and 401Ks. This one has so many holes in it, it’s laughable, but his recent statement that even though raising the capital gains tax would (provably) result in less tax revenues for the government and a lower levels of investment, jobs , GNP and overall prosperity for the country, that BHO thinks it would be the way to go because it would be “fairer”…. in other words, better we all live less well than to see anyone get something through their hard work/investment that others don’t get….
That’s the true BHO, class warrior and socialist, but his advisors must have realized how stupid (and revealing) his prior public statement proclamation was and that they needed to come up with another tact on his capital gains hocus pocus. Too bad this latest one ignores several basic economic principles concerning the effect on the ultimate prices of those investments in IRAs that higher capital gains taxes would have. Again, it may hurt us all, but it’ll be fair. Can’t just let that top tier of income earners merely pay virtually all the income taxes, no, they have to pay even a BIGGER share of the earnings of this country so that the Federal government can have more to control us all. It doesn’t sound as “nice” and “fair” that way. Only lie about the effect on the little guy….slick…
Obviously, he can’t win over middle of the road or conservatives voters if he tells the un-spun truth on his positions on these issues. So he tries to shade things and try to appear to be someone he is not. He is very good at it and some who go more for hype and show than substance may actually fall for his act. Wake up, America, before it’s too late.
Good news, . . . that is what they call the “gospel” in Christian circles, and the “good news” for the Obama campaign and the best interests of the country can be found in Isiah 54:17 “No weapons formed against thee shall prosper.”
Good news indeed.
Good night all, and have a constructive evening. Don’t forget to love somebody.
“What man meant for evil, God meant for good”
Yes I also agreed that Obama and Rev Wright issue is and should be part of the campaign as it goes to show Obama’s character. Both men are honorable men with outstanding character. The evil started with sound clips will open the hearts of some people to realize that racial issues in our country have never been resolved. It has already started with many people. There are many posting from people apologizing to Rev Wright for smearing the work he has done for over 40 years.
Rev. Wright said that what God turned to the good was Barack Obama’s speech on race. I think that the speech was just a start of the good to come.
Has anyone watched the Bill Moyer’s interview with Rev. Wright? Before continuing to condemn Rev Wright on a few seconds of a sermon, it would only be fair to listen to Wright and try to understand the complete context of the sermon. An understanding of the Bible and history of the US and the black church is needed.
In the United States of American a person is supposed to get a “fair” trial before being lynched; however, many Americans have already buried Rev. Wright after listening to a few seconds of sermons, usually seen through the “white eye.”
Try to understand “unashamedly black.” A woman was telling me about being a judge in a hair styling contest in the early
1970s. The voting on the hairstyles for black women’s hair was done “through the white persons eye.” Unashamedly black means you do not have to listen to white peoples music in church, have plastic surgery on your nose to fit the white person’s idea of beauty. These are just a few things that Rev Wright helped instill in black people through his long and very successful career.

If you want to hear some racial hate, tune into CNN, right now.
Whos that crazy old fool they are showing on Fox.
I can’t believe the guy raving on Fox right now!
I was trying to tune into the NAACP presentation.
The first guy shown is flipping out.
He is very angry.
I can’t quite make out the words!
So both Cnn and Fox ran that American hater. Well, I am going to watch something else.
Obama is an empty suit,he reminds me of a used car salesman.
That is the largest gathering of racist no to man, all in one room.
don’t be trying to make something out of the Keating 5. Thats been hashed out years ago. No “there” there.

they have list of obama,s positive campaign
JoAnn, He appeared to be quite bitter, and clinging to his religion. They will deny it, but it is free air time to campaign for Obama.
RC MO
Also free air time for other candidates
1. It isn’t that it is legal or illegal, but that Obama claims he is a different sort of candidate and doesn’t take such money. That is the point of the post and why the LA Times article was quoted.
2. How come that every time a question is raised about Obama, there is an immediate attack on Clinton?
I am curious about Obama’s campaign strategy should he get the nomination. Let’s suppose he is going head to head against McCain, and there is yet another question about Obama’s integrity.
Will Obama then attack Senator Clinton for something? I am not sure that will be very effective in the general election; it works now because Obama can take advantage of the media’s anti-Clinton bias.
Wright is on there now - the crazy old Racist…how can anyone in there right mind defend this man. Now he singing - oh my gosh - what a nut case.
BigTex, Explain.
There seems to be a lot of “not new news” surrounding Obama that is still quite relevant when choosing the nominee — Rezko, Ayers, Auchi, and now Blackwell.
Obama hasn’t made misleading statements about lobbyists’ money. He has lied about lobbyists’ money/
RC MO
That will positively reinforce the emotions of a segment of Obama’s supporters.
It will also reinforce the negative feelings and emotions of those that oppose the Obama campaign
Why is the network news all showing Wright?
Elitism means consciousness of being or snobbery as used in descript of Barrack Obama after his bittergate comment. The Ivory Tower syndrome…but yet he claims to be a poor kid who had to but himself thru this ivory tower so he could look down on typical white, typical hard working Americans.
BigTex, Thanks. That makes sense.
After listening to Jerimiah Wright at the NAACP dinner - perhaps Barrack was talking about him when he said clinging to his guns…I think he would like to see white Americans disappear. This is one scarry man. He could sit the racial divide back 100 years.
Maybe you all should watch the whole sermon from 4-13-03 that is posted on the Fox website, watch Rev. Wright’s speech at the NAACP, read your Bibles, and take a few days for quite reflection. Maybe then there could be some more thoughtful responses on this subject.
RC MO
You are welcome. How are things in your neck of the woods
Wright is ragging on JFK’s grammar, President Johnson’s, Bostonians and other whites…
Keep it up Wright and friends. You are helping McCain.
There are more of us than there are of you.
I did hear him say he thanked the people from Chicago who went over to Detroit, before I flipped him off.
BigTex, Cold spell, and quite wet, right now. I`m a farmer, and I need to get in the fields, but it is to muddy.
Not only did Obama serve on the Woods Foundation with Ayers, but Obama was also the Chairman of the Chicago Annenburg Challenge. This can be verified by reading his Biographical Sketch that was included in the now infamous 1996 Illinois General Assembly Questionaire. (I can send this to you if you’d like, it’s a PDF file)
Please read, this just came out today. Here’s an excerpt from it:
In 1995, the Chicago Annenberg Challenge was created to raise funds to help reform the Chicago public schools. One of the architects of the Challenge was none other than Professor Bill Ayers. Ayers co-wrote the initial grant proposal and proudly lists himself on his own website as the co-founder of the Challenge.
And who was the Chair of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge Fund in its early years and involved with until 2003? That would be Barack Obama. That is a cozier relationship between these two than we have formerly been led to believe [See, for example the Fox News transcript, in the UPDATE.].
A link in the article takes you here:
Pingback by Dems 2008: Sunday Obamaland round-up [Karl] | 2008-04-27 12:29:47
[…] Larry Johnson notes that Obama has been less than honest about his relationship with unrepentant domestic terrorist William Ayers. We already knew that Ayers held the first fundraiser at his home to help launch Obama’s state senate campaign in 1995, and that they served together on the board of the Woods Fund for years, giving grants to people like former PLO flack Rashid Khalidi. What we did not know is that Obama was the director of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge – a school reform organization co-founded by Ayers. He also links to a piece by Steve Diamond, law professor on the faculty of Santa Clara University School of Law, providing further background as to why this suggests Obama and Ayers may go back as far as the late 1980s. Granted, Johnson is famous for downplaying the threat of Islamic terrorism in the summer of 2001, but he has backup material this time. […]
Larry Johnson is of http://noquarterusa.net/blog/ where he has an article (with facts): titled Why is Obama hiding the truth about William Ayers: http://noquarterusa.net/blog/2008/04/26/why-is-obama-hiding-the-truth-about-william-ayers-follow-the-money/

I understand. Have family that are farmers and ranchers. Always at the mercy of the weather.
Kathy Do they usually broadcaset the NAACP Dinner?
All I hear from people is there is not any difference except for the color of our skin. Wright just threw that theory out of the window. He is saying that everything about us is different. I do agree with that.
test
Bring out the straight jacket Meathead we’ve got one his name is Jerimiah Wright.
BigTex, I sucks sometimes, but it makes me a pretty good weather man. My forecasts usually come out pretty accurate.
I have never seen it before. (and won’t watch it now), I think they are doing it as part of the re-habiliate Wright campaign. The Obama campaign (Axelrod) hired a PR firm in Chicago to try to clean him up. It’s just more b.s. Anybody can write and say anything to make them selves try to look better when they’ve been caught out.
what the f&&&k
why we have to put up with wright
is wright running for office
why all channels running his speech
I wonder what the postings are on the CNN blogs with this guy on. Almost afraid my p.c. would blow up if I went to check. lol
looks like obama,s speech writer wrote his speech too …
wright is talking about stupid chnage too
what the f**K change
what change
we AMERICANS ARE FINE
just leave us alone
cnn,,,msnbc,,,fox too
what happened to these people
his speech seem too similar to obama,s speech
oh man
i am sick of this guy
Sam, I think its to make Wright look better. They think it will rub off on Obama and make him look better. Ho ho. Bet it makes Hillary and John Happy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ty6krf18huA&feature=related
Kathy WI, It doesn`t clean him up any in my eyes, because the real wright has already shown himself. If I were to beat my wife, and then try to change my spots tomorrow, it would not change her view of me any, because she would have already seen the dark side.
I have listened to Wright’s sermon, I have heard him talk about the flag and our serviceman with disrepect - there is no way he is respecting whites. He insults us everytime he opens his mouth. His speech sounds like it came from the same speech writer as Obama’s speech when he was trying to defend his relationship with Wright. He is using this the NAACP to booster votes for Obama
There’s a lot of blacks in Gary Ind. Looking for more OB votes.
oh man
i am so happy they got that b,,,a,s,s off the tv
RC Mo, I agree but I think thats what THEY think.
Man, the media sure knows how to stir things up. But it is good for us anti OB people
Does anyone here have a book coming out in the fall ?
obama is a very clever politician
he knows ,,
in indiana ,,,,its open primary so reps can vote too
so he was being nice about reagon ,,,,so reps can vote for him
There are also a lot of convicted felons in Gary, who can`t vote anyway.
Well, crap, now Fox is putting more of it on.
this speech was prepared by obama and his speech writer
to make obama look better and make wright look better
at least fox should not air it
RCMO.
I’m back.
I just listened to Wright.
I don’t know what to say.
It was obviously a huge campaign event for Obama.
The “Change” is gonna come”, over and over.!
He mentioned Obama’s whole name. He dogged O’Reilly.
Too bad he is such a bigot.
He was snotty about white people, (Boston).
He is brilliant. He is a character, but he is also harboring a hatred for whites.
He never said the black people are responsible for themselves. It’s all about the oppression from the white people.
I tried to keep an open mind. That is until I kept hearing Obama’s slogans”Change” and then “Yes we can”!
Then I realized it was a publicity stunt.
Mo, they do in Ind. lol
Now, comes the spin from the media
