Clinton Challenge to Obama: Debate Me Mano a Mano

SOUTH BEND, Ind — Senator Clinton issued her strongest debate challenge yet to Democratic rival Barack Obama, saying that if tough questions from the moderators are what he’s worried about, she’s willing to scrap them and face him one-on-one.

“After the last debate in Philadelphia, Senator Obama’s supporters complained a little bit about the tough questions,” she said to sarcastic cries from the crowd. “Tough questions in the debate are nothing compared to the tough questions you get asked when you’re president and you have to answer them to make tough decisions.”

“So here’s my proposal: I’m offering Senator Obama the chance to debate me one on one, no moderators. Just the two of us, going for 90 minutes, asking and answering questions.”

Clinton recalled the grand tradition of the unmoderated debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas in their 1858 Senate race in Illinois, saying “I think that would be good for the Democratic party, it would be good for our democracy, and it would be great for Indiana.”

As she delivered her challenge at home plate of a minor league ballpark, Obama was telling FNC’s Chris Wallace that he would not debate Senator Clinton before the Indiana primary. Clinton aides acknowledge there’s not much chance that these debates will actually take place — but say that with the perfect storm of media pressure and public outcry, Obama might be forced to give in.

Given his performance in the last debate, the Clinton campaign feels that any further meetings just provide her with another chance to cut into his lead and show that she’d make a superior president

UPDATE: Obama Communications Director Robert Gibbs says no dice. It’s a matter of numbers: “We have participated in 21 nationally televised debates, the most in primary history, including four exclusively with Senator Clinton. Senator Clinton refused an earlier invitation that had been accepted to debate in North Carolina. Over the next 10 days, we believe it’s more important to talk directly to the voters of Indiana and North Carolina about fixing our economy, cutting the cost of health care and ending a war in Iraq that never should have been authorized in the first place.”

21 debates are not enough when one of the candidate’s character and judgement
is so questionable, in serious doubt!

The truth is we may never know the real Obama until its to late! let at least
try. Anybody can spend months talking pretty and promising anything they want
but answering questions about terrorists , antiamerican friends its by far more
important to find out before sitting in that OVAL OFFICE!

Sweet promisses may never be fullfiled with bad influences in the White house.

The “wimp” label is starting to stick and Hillary’s been pimp-smackin’ B.O. since the lead-up to Ohio/Texas. Perhaps Hillary should promise Barack another pillow and some cookies if he’ll debate her.

Come on B.O. supporters, start whining & crying foul. Or better yet, dust off Cornelius Clyburn (again) and re-play the race card (again).

INDIANA AND N. CAROLINA, lets support Hillary!

I support Hillary because of her EXTRAORDINARY strenght, hard working, persistence,
she is s fighter, a survivor in time of personal and political crisis, resciliant
and eager to get ahead herself, to help and protect the american people. Hillary
is indeed a true inspiration for people, specially women.

I am proud of her, very proud! Just fear that antiafemenists will rather give the
nomination to a QUESTIONABLE, unpatriotic Obama than to a hard working Lady, Hillary.

I support her because:

Hmmm…..Best I recall, she cried. She whined about “having to go first”….WAH WAH WAH! She lied, he’s an elitist. She supported NAFTA, now she don’t. He has a “friendly” relationship with a shady character that committed a horrible crime when he wasn’t much more than a toddler. Oh yeah, and they’re both politicians. Simple fact is some won’t vote for her cause she’s a woman, some won’t vote for him cause he’s black. But what is not hard to figure out is how they are terrifically setting up the GOP for another 4 years. Then we’ll all be crying into our pillows!

Obama’s friends will be lethal for Americans;

Much has been already discussed about Barack Obama’s disturbing associations with
a domestic terrorist (Ayers), to a prominent Palestinian advocate of suicide bombings
(Khalidi), a corrupt Iraqi billionaire (Auchi), a sleazy personal fundraiser and
mafioso (Rezko), and to his own genocidal maniac of a cousin from Kenya (Odinga),
for whom Obama led a “positive” campaign effort to achieve his “election” a few
years back. As many of us know, Obama’s camp has recently taken a defensive stance
and have dedicated countless hours to spread the word around the internet that these
issues are “irrelevant” to a Presidential campaign and that bringing them up are
thus a full exemplification of “dirty politics”.

Obama’s race isn’t the reason many won’t vote for him. It because he an ULTRA-liberal Democrat who cannot win a general election. Independents and Centrist Democrats will vote for McCain instead of Obama.

Why is it that when B.O. starts losing most Obama supporters “cling” to his race being the reason many people won’t vote for him. Get over yourselves and stop playing the race card…because history shows that Obama turns to drugs when he can’t cope with the issue of his race.

And the Clinton 300 is out in full force again, I see. (They’re planted, you know.) Anyway, it was reported that Obama does not want to debate because you don’t just show up for a debate. They take too much time away from campaigning. He would rather be on the ground one to one with the people. Simple enough for you to understand? No other reasons to your fairy tale likings…just wants to be with the people instead. I applaud him for that and think that is putting his time to it’s best use. He’s the intellectual one, remember? he doesn’t run on lies, mis speaks, tears, hormones, and gutter tactics.

RE: GAIL Comment

Simple fact is I won’t vote for Hillary not because she is a woman (I could care less…), but because she can’t be trusted and was her husband’s long-time “knowing sexual enabler” against innocent women. Bill Clinton disgraced his office and our country. As for Obama, he won’t get my vote either. Obama is not qualified to be our next President based on lack of required experience and a history of overall poor judgment. His 20-year association with a racist minister, his ongoing association with known undesirables, a mean spirited wife who would be a disaster as First Lady and a complete lack of good judgment in allowing his two young daughters to attend racist sermons, I would think makes him a very poor choice for our next President. I could care less the color of his skin. Of the two, Hillary is obviously better qualified to be President. Although McCain has his warts too, I will proudly vote for him in November. And Mrs. McCain will make a fine First Lady.

Comment by jacksmith

DEBATE! DEBATE!! DEBATE!!!

It’s time for everyone to face the truth. Barack Obama has no real chance of winning the national election in November at this time. His crushing defeat in Pennsylvania makes that fact crystal clear. His best, and only real chance of winning in November is on a ticket with Hillary Clinton as her VP.

Hillary Clinton seemed almost somber at her victory speech. As if part of her was hoping Obama could have defeated her. And proved he had some chance of winning against the republican attack machine, and their unlimited money, and resources. In all honesty. I felt some of that too.

But it is absolutely essential that the democrats take back the Whitehouse in November. America, and the American people are in a very desperate condition now. And the whole World has been doing all that they can to help keep us propped up.

Hillary Clinton say’s that the heat, and decisions in the Whitehouse are much tougher than the ones on the campaign trail. But I think Mr. Obama faces a test of whether he has what it takes to be a commander and chief by facing the difficult facts, and the truth before him. And by doing what is best for the American people by dropping out of the race, and offering his whole hearted assistance to Hillary Clinton to help her take back the Whitehouse for the American people, and the World.

Mr. Obama is a great speaker. And I am confident he can explain to the American people the need, and wisdom of such a personal sacrifice for them. It should be clear to everyone by now that Hillary Clinton is fighting her heart out for the American people. She has known for a long time that Mr. Obama can not win this November. You have to remember that the Clinton’s have won the Whitehouse twice before. They know what it takes.

If Mr. Obama fails his test of commander and chief we can only hope that Hillary Clinton can continue her heroic fight for the American people. And that she prevails. She will need all the continual support and help we can give her. She may fight like a superhuman. But she is only human.

Sen. Hillary Clinton: “You know, more people have now voted for me than have voted for my opponent. In fact, I now have more votes than anybody has ever had in a primary contest for a nomination. And it’s also clear that we’ve got nine more important contests to go.”

Sincerely

Jacksmith… Working Class :-)

Here’s a novel idea…if the debate is TRULY to dicuss issues that concern the American voters, and enable us to decide the best Democratic nominee…how about ALL these so-called “news networks” tapping their local connections to cover the townhall style meetings where the candidates are asked questions by those to whom the anwers matter, i.e the actual voters. Then once they have these, dont slice and dice the responses into personal agenda promoting sound bites, but rather air the responses in their contexts. Maybe then people can make informed sensible choices.

If MI and FL delegates are not seated, it is not Obama’s fault.
They are paying the penalty for breaking the rules.

We can’t change the rules during the race just to favor one candidate - even if that candidate is Clinton. Even if she thinks the rules ought to be changed to suit her. Even if she thinks America owes her the presidency.

I have a lot of respect for those who do not give up but fight to the end. But I have none for those who fight dirty.

I have no respect for Clinton’s campaign tactics because it has no respect for the rules. Her campaign keeps suggesting new ‘metrics’ to decide who (meaning she) should win the nomination. The true metrics have been decided on before the race began - it is the delegate count.

Comment by David

VoterGal what about those voters in MI and FL. Keep your eyes on the Prize. The President is elected by a winner takes all EC crap, and even if the map favors the Dems this year, if FL and MI are not counted, or at least seen to be counted, its going to be hard whom ever is the nominee

I AM VERY PROUD THAT OBAMA HAS BEEN ABLE TO REMAIN SUCH A GENTLEMAN, AND SO CIVIL TO HILLARY.

AND I am sure Obama will continue to be civil to Hillary Clinton, because his mother raised him well, and he is a gentleman, But Obama needs to continue doing what he is doing, and that is going out and meeting, and talking to, and answering the questions of the citizens, who he is meeting while on the campaign trail. The people sitting in gymnasiums, and town halls.

Comment by Queen Tee, Compton, CA

Why does Clinton want to fight Obama so bad? She would cry so loud if he started kicking her behind all down the streets of Indiana. I mean just drag her and her husband through the mud with no regard to the damage to her, the party, or himself. With out a doubt, I am sure he could dig and sling enough dirt to get the party started. More importantly, a debate would take honest conversation, and this woman has lost all since of integrity. Debating with Mrs. President Clinton is like talking to a scared little girl spinning a tale full of twist and turns to prove an imaginary point.
I am a Black 45 year old women who will not support the Clintons again, because I am offended by their behavior. Winning, never surrendering, fighting, are all attributes that in excess will destroy and consequently lose the very prize sought after. It is not necessary to exploit the obvious Black people and White people have a sensitive past, and we all know it and continue to repair it along the way.
Obama has nothing to be afraid of with regard to the Clinton Machine, because they ARE losing and lying about that FACT. Changing the rules to fit her ultimate victory over insurmountable odds is simple cheating, and I do not see any change of heart just a false air of confidence and a disgraceful disrespect for the people who’s shoulders the Clintons have stood on their entire political career.
I pray for Mr. Obama, his supporters, Ms. Clinton, her supporter, and the mediators brokering the battle. One thing we should remember this is not just about the candidates, but this is about American people and their lives paying $4.00 per gallon for gas. You never know for sure what a person will do in time, but if you start on a dishonest foot, the results will be the same as we face today.
We should ask ourselves is argument on two people we want to represent all of us constructive, or is there some hidden agenda keeping us confused to continue to drive the average person to the poor house. In my prayers is a swift resolution, so we can move on to what is important getting the Republicans out of the White House.

Comment by vote4thebest

Obama’s run away from answering questions or debates, and talks about ‘taking the nomination away’ from Obama’s supporters are strong evidence that Obama and his supporters are the ones who feel ‘entitled’ to the nomination even though he has not earned the required delegates.

When there is such a high percentage (90%) of the black voting for Obama, it is hard to believe that this is not a vote for a Black candidate because he is black. Contrasting with Clinton, she does not have 90% of the women votes meaning that she has to earn many of these votes. The sense of entitlement is bad because they forget what truly matters is to win the November’s election. This 90% of the Blacks and Obama must take responsibility that it is him, his actions, his judgment, his message that are connecting with the rest of the America. When Obama has the money, the momentum, yet people still don’t vote for him. That is the truth that all delegates need to look at!

Delegates are supposed to look for who can win the general election, not just the primaries

vote4thebest,

What question would you like answered that hasn’t been answered by the hours and hours of debates, we have almost two straight days worth of debate between the two. What issue has been left unexplored, what question unanswered? As for the black vote, almost 75% of Clinton voters in PA said race was an issue in their decision so it cuts both ways. But thats reality, whatever the reason people voted how they voted thats… how they voted and she’s losing in every category. National polls, delegate count, popular vote, states won. However he’s done it he’s done it and for Clinton to keep this going with this silly attacks she’s really starting to make herself look bad. Over the past month, be it her Bosnia stories, Bill’s many lies, her saying she’s winning the popular vote, or even this debate thing she’s coming over very unpresidental and desperate.
