“Bitter” aftertaste for some Kentuckians

Inez, KY - The loudest applause line of the day at Sen. John McCain’s town hall in rural Kentucky Wednesday did not come in response to remarks by the GOPer but rather a local official.

Asked to comment on Sen. Obama’s “bitter” remarks, McCain first offered the state senator who served up the guaranteed grand slam question take the first crack at it.

“Do you think those comments reflect the views of your constituents?” McCain asked Kentucky District 30 State Sen. Brandon Smith.

“I think it reflects the views of someone who doesn’t understand this neck of the woods,” Smith responded, generating a thunderous standing ovation from the nearly 500 attendees in the Inez Courthouse.

McCain then slammed Obama for the comments, referring to them “elitist remarks to say the least,” and essentially calling the Democrat out of touch with “Americans who love this country” and have a “fundamental faith and believe in God and respect for the constitution.”

Go McCain, go after Obummy!!!

Typical response. I think that if any of those present had any brains to think for themselves rather than let the media think for them they probably would respond differently. I bet if you asked the 500 or so individuals present to explain McCain’s plan on the economy, Health care, future of social security / medicare, education etc, I would be surprised if 10 of them could detail his plans. Again no surprise. But what can do you expect from a bunch of uneducated, unhooded, and simple followers.

Obama is an Elitist Snob.

Comment by bk

Obama is too extreme for the American people, not just NC. There is something very wrong with Obama. He should not even be considered for the leader of our country.

Comment by profitleads

I keep listening to him and I keep being astonished that anyone could be so foolish. McCain is going to lose and he’s going to lose in historically huge fashion. I have seen the “polls” thus far and they purport to show a close race. Bologna. I still do not believe that McCain will be able to win the electoral votes of a single state, even Alaska. I predict that he will be only the 2nd GOP presidental candidate who was able to lost the state of Alaska……and that takes some doing for a GOP nominee.

Bitter Test Post.

Obama can forget Kentucky and West Virginia and Puerto Rico. He’s probably gonna get beaten in Indiana as well. So his late primaries joy is really limited to the likes of North Carolina and the Pacific Northwest. I think the opportunity is now there for the Clinton team to say that any win by Obama in North Carolina of less than 10 - 16 per cent is a moral victory for her and will represent a further weakening of his campaign momentum. If it’s ok for Obama to try this argument on her in Pennsylvania, why not return the compliment in North Carolina? I think Obama is clear favourite to win there - but what if his margin was only say 5 per cent? He would be SERIOUSLY damaged.

In the past I have been an avid fan of CNN. I consider myself a news junkie and more likely than not CNN was on my TV screen. Now, I simply cannot stomach the nonstop love fest for Mr. Obama.
I wanted the so called “Most Trusted” team to simply report the facts and give a balanced view of this election. Instead, there is such a pro Obama slant to everything they do that they have become simply unwatchable. Thank you Fox News for providing another side to this story. I never thought I would say this, but stories like this and opinion pieces that are at least not a gushing adoration for one candidate or the other are more likely here then what we now refer to in my home as ONN.
And if anyone was wondering, as a Canadian, I have no real stake in this election but I know that whatever the good people of the USA decide in November will obviously have some effect in my own country. I and many of my friends are very interested in this election but find it hard to get real unbiased news about it. Last night CNN took forever to call the election for Mrs. Clinton, and then proceeded to “educate” the viewers on how, in this case, a win was really a loss! Unbelievable!
I switched over to you guys and never looked back.

I am scared of a man (Obama) that will not allow us to know him. He only makes speeches. He never answers questions. When he does say something like he said in CA. Why would he not say it to their faces. It might have made people mad but not make everyone think he panders to whom ever he is speaking to at the moment. I think he is a fake. He was on Oprah a few months before he said he would run for President. He told her at that time he was not going to run for President that he had no plans to run. After his book can out and was a hit from the Oprah show. He then 3 months later began to run. I think he is running because he thought he could win. I do however think he has no idea what he will do if he gets elected. That scares me. I do not think he has a clue or a stand. God help us. Yes, I cling to my bible and pray I will never have to use it.

Comment by Michael, Houston, Tx

Obama may take the nomination, but common sense will prevail - and as he becomes better known, people will see him for the fake he really is. A charlatan who learned his preachy style of speechmaking from Rev. Wright and combined it with excellent grammar. You can judge a man by the company he keeps - and in Obama’s case so far we have a litany of names and groups, like Wright, Farrakhan, Ayers; and the Black Panthers and Hamas who have his support and affection and have given that in return.

A vote for Obama is a vote to set us back in progress. Watch and see

Comment by Jeremy

Obama is a far left nut.

The fine people of Inez were 100% correct in that Obama does not understand the people from rural areas and he doesn’t care to know either.

He is a radical elitest and all of his “association” with radical friends is proof of that.

Comment by Carol

I applaud this Senator for telling the truth about howridiculously out of touch Obama is with America. His arrogance shows in Obama’s comments about how we cling to faith and guns….who the hell does Obama think he is?? This is exactly WHY he lost Pennsylvaia and can NEVER win the big states vital to win in the General election. This is what Hillary keeps showing us all! The REAL issue now is NOT about how many delegates either candidate has or will not have when all the primaries are done–it’s about who is BEST equipped to lead, and to win these critical states to put Republicans OUT of the White House. Obama can never accomplish this….he is weak; he’s a whiner; he’s dishoenest; he’s arrogant and deceptive about his sleazy associations; and he is condescending in his approcahes and tone with average American people struggling to make ends meet. If superdelegates swing Obama’s way, he will put this country in great peril and lead us into racial chaos. It’s about time for this country to wake up! Obama thinks he can buy this election, but he can’t buy my vote!!! Hillary Clinton WILL BE our next President! The tide HAS turned on Obama!!

Comment by bk

Everyone should be mad about Obama’s comment. That just goes to show you what he really thinks about the middle class. He is so arrogant.

Comment by David

Well, I guess even Senator McCain can throw a mean left hook once and awhile. He’s going to win.

Comment by Jo Anne

Good strategy!
Have them answer those types of questions themselves.
Let Americans say how they feel.
Instead of declaring anything negative off limits, ask Americans if it is an issue with them.
Don’t say, “I don’t want to talk about these subjects”. Turn the question around to inquire how the question is affecting the person asking!
Good diplomacy McCain!

What a hoot. I grew up in Kentucky; on Greyhawk mountain outside Richmond, and then in a wonderful little place called Blue Lick, and Lexington. I love Kantucky and dream of returning there one day- which seems less and less possible now that I’m in my late forties.

I never heard the N word, never heard the blacks put down. Everything was wonderfully arranged and understood: those colored folks knew their place. They were treated kindly and often with much affection, but they came through the back door and I recall some consternation when I befriended an elderly doctor at the local fishing hole. From the relatives. My mother, who had married a Marine and had multi-racial friends, saw nothing wrong with this wonderful friendship and took some heat.

So — I know Kentucky and it full of ornery, rascally mountain folk who feel the need to quote the Bible every other sentence- especially the Penticosts - and turn to huntin’ as a means to show their manly superiority - one of their favorite targets to this day are the tombstones in the little graveyard surrounded by forest in Greyhawk where my grandfather is buried- and they’re just a narrow-minded bunch. Not all, but numerous Kentuckians. And the horse-breeding lot are genteeeeely narrow-minded, putting all their soul into their horses and shrubbery (I have wealthy relatives, too.)

So… it’s hilarious to read this article because it’s all so much bullpaddy - if you know what I mean.
As one of my Kentucky relatives- Aunt Mott- would have said, “Oh, they have eyes but they do not see.” (I’m sure this is from the Bible… ;)

Obama will most likely win the democrat primary but he will lose big in the general election. We have more moderate democrats, independents and republicans that we have far left elitists. That is why the dems lose. That can’t hide the fact that they think they are better than everyone else.

Comment by client#8

go mccain,

making hamburger meat out of obombyomama is easy……he’s going to leave the general election process wondering who the hell he is, and when he finds out, maybe he can clue in the american public..

Comment by Rod

The “elitist” does not want to share their position in society and these are the people pulling the strings of the democratic party today. The JFK democratic party has been taken over bit by bit by left wing nuts who want a wacked out socialist way of life. They want the poor to stay poor and continue to convince them that the conservatives are mean spirited. They want the middle class to stay middle class with universal health care as the new carrot. While all this is going on, the liberals have choked small business, litigation keeps growing, we’re becoming more dependent on foreign oil, they are creating food shortages-do I need to keep going. Yes I do. They want to tax the hell out of us. The latest tax information shows (from the IRS):

The top 50% earns 86.19% of all the income.
The top 50% pay 96.03% of all income taxes.
The bottom 50% pay 3.97% of all income taxes.

Presiden Bush has helped the so-called middle class with tax breaks than what Clinton did. That’s a fact. With HRC or bHo, those middle class cuts will be gone in a heart beat. More later.

Did McCain say this before he declared he was going to run an issue-centered campaign on nixing the NC state ads about Wright? No matter, the issue is Obama’s (lack of) judgment, among a long list of others.

Hmmmmmmmmmm…. Do you suppose some of those Millions of fundraising dollars Obama Camp is bringing in is coming from “Republicans” because they know Obama will be the Easier of the two democratic candidates to beat in November? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I am not from Kentucky but I do cling to God. I cling, not from bitterness rather the realizaton that He is the only One dependable enough. I keep and bear arms because it’s my right and it helps keep my family and my neighbors safe from those who choose lawlessness. Perhaps if Senator Obama were to partake of NRA’s several gun safety courses, he’d be less inclined to “shoot himself in the foot.”

Comment by Harry Mandelbaum

If Obama had the convictions, love and American traditions of these Martin County citizens he might be ahead.

Comment by Frankie

Shocking. Backwoods rednecks that didn’t like Obama’s comment? Didn’t see that coming. Hillbillies that live in Kentucky don’t cling to guns and religion because they are bitter. They cling to guns and religion because they are stupid.

Geez, we’re talking about a state where the state University has an arena named after a notorious racist, Adolf Rupp.

Comment by client#8

frankie,

people cling to God have faith, not stupidity…..people own guns for a whole host of reasons other than bitterness. and there is only one condition in which people will cling to guns, and that is anarchy.

the only thing ’stupid’ about this whole issue are obama’s comments and your thoughts.

as for the rupp arena, why are you injecting racism? if you’ve ever been to Uinv of Kentucky, you would know that they have a great minority and affirmative action program.

so next time, please share your thoughts, but spare us your stupidity.

Comment by Billie

Frankie, you’re the type of person who does give people a bad name. I live in Ky. and don’t own a gun and never have, and religion is a private thing. So don’t shove everybody in the same pot.

Comment by Susej

Adolf Rupp was one of the most successful coaches in the history of American college basketball. Rupp is the third highest men’s college coach in total victories. I do not live in Ky.; but, I do live in the Southern part of Florida. It’s sometimes called: lower Alabama. Therefore, I guess you could say that I cling to my gun and my Bible. Obama has insulated a lot of people of this great country.

Comment by Comment By Mike from KY

First - Frankie, not all Kentuckians are ‘Backwoods rednecks’, not all Kentuckians disapprove of Senator Obama’s remarks. Many americans are bitter and most of today’s politicians (Clinton,McCain) use issues like gun control and abortion to take the voters eyes off of the economy, the war, and many other issues that are affecting the entire country. I believe that McCain and Clinton think that certain parts of the country are to ‘uneducated’ and ignorant to know anything about the economy, therefore they say ‘look ya’ll, this ‘black’ man is want’n to take yall’s guns away’.

I for one am tired of politics as usual, I am tired of seasoned politicians like McCain and Clinton looking down on the american people and using (abusing) the american peoples lack of education or lack of knowledge as to what is going on outside of the hometown to deceive them.

Comment by client#8

mike from ky,

why are you being so racsist? backwood rednecks? how about getto blacks? nobody likes stereotypes mike. as for seasoned politicians, i think obama fits that description well….he says nothing of substance, only rhetoric….i heard his speech last tuesday from indiana, and i didn’t hear anything but cliches….it’s like give me a break, give me substance and save the rhetoric for rev wright.

YOU CAN’T GET BITTER because its a white thing [race ]. WE ARE PROUD AMERICAS . we don’t care how were getting robbed lets just be honest about it . “if it white its alright” just like this fake recession who ’s benefitting? cucasians are getting squeezed but you’re not at crisis yet . ASK THE COMMANDER IN CHIEF why won’t he tap the oil reserves . no he’s to busy picking your pockets ‘right in your face’ no; don’t be bitter be broke.

Richardson cannot be trusted and a traitor. Don’t vote for him when runs for a Senator. He belongs to Wright, Rezco and Ayer who join any rgoup or fraternity where he will benefit and not the Americans.

Obama’s motto and theme should be Pay per Vote. Obama overspent in Pennsylvannia and still came out the loser.

Look at the facts as to how strong Hillary is:

Obama lost in Pennsylvannia in spite of endorsement by a Senator and overspending in ads, 5 to 1.

Obama lost in Texas and Ohio even overspending in ads and manipulating info in Ohio.

Obama lost in California even though Oprah, Maria Shriver, and Katherine Kennedy endorsed him.

Obama lost Massachusetts even though Kennedy and John Kerry endorsed him.

Hillary won the big states and has more electoral college votes to date than Obama that is crucial in November.

Obama lost the big states even though the media is most of the time unfair with Hillary and always positive to Obama.

Wake up superdelegates! You will make the right choice if you pick Hillary.

Obama mocked the Pennsylvannians and the entire nation, which is so irresponsible and very degrading to all Americans. He is just like Wright who mocked the Americans and like Rezco and Ayers who we can’t trust.

Wake up superdelegates!

Frankie,
People who make such comments are the stupid ones. There are many people in Kentucky that have high levels of education and money. Also, even the ones that don’t have the college educations probably are smarter and nicer than someone like you. This blanket statement shows a level of ingnorance.

Comment by Gail Hutson

Grow up you Clinton and McCain supporters, Barack Obama has already won the delegates and can actually get to 2025. Do any of you know your math? As far as the gun and religion comment that was completely taken out of context and blown out of porportion. And so is the Reverend Wright thing, go take a look at Reverend Wright’s life work, you will see character above and beyond most of us. C’mon on folks lets get smart. Clinton has already lost and just will not stand aside, that might give you an indication of her character. Hillary can not catch up and John McCain can not win with Bush policies. All hail the chief President Obama.

Comment by Brenda in SC

Well Obama,
Maybe you have shouldn’t have looked down your noses at honest hard working Americans. Many of those people who love to hunt put food on the table to help feed their families. They didn’t have their grandmother and grandfather putting them thru prep school and Harvard. As a person of faith, I often turn to my Bible for answers and strenght. I am not bitter. I have a college education and am a medical professional. I was born in the city but understood the rural lifestyle and have always respected the abilities of those who worked the land or the blue color Americans who had to work hard to provide for their families, after all didn’t almost all Americans at one point and time. Being from Virginia - I know both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson actually worked their land, carried guns and were deeply involved in their faith.

Comment by Brenda in SC

Gail,
If you do the math - if the Florida votes are seated as they should be Hillary is ahead. I would rather vote for John McCain than I would Obama. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of Obama’s delegates jump ship.

James Carville is absolutely right! There are many Judas in the Democratic Party nowadays… They should all be hanged!

These so called LEADERS that should set good example of loyalty to their constituents are Blatantly betraying them. SHAME ON THEM!!!

These Elders are asking their supporters to support them but have different standard in supporting their constituents. SHAME ON YOU!!!

DNC Traitors & Judases:(Voted against the will of their Constituents)
Ted Kennedy
John Kerry
Nancy Pelosi
Bill Richardson
Gov. Henry

***Will you join them????*** SHAME ON THEM!!!

You can’t blame the disgusted Democrat electorate if they will vote for John McCain come November if Hillary is not the nominee.

Comment by Rj

CAUCUS - is a legit way of stealing votes from the real winner - Obama is the recepient of these. This is the only reason why they’re leading in delegates count. DNC Leaders should do the “Winner takes all” by GOP to avoid stealing votes from the real winner.

you are no less racists that the writer you so accuse. you claim Barack did had no substance only because you fail to listen. I will put you on the spot and ask what substance mccain brings to the table apart from the fact that he was a prisoner of war. he was told that we need a health care system that is similar to what he has a senator and he reply was “i had no health plan as a prisoner of war” how out of touch can Mccain be? what has he offered about this economy other than the tax cuts? yes Obama made a terrible statement because he sterotyped. He will continue to pay for it. However, there is more to America than rich Southern white men telling poor southern whites what and identity politics. Other parts of this country, including the Educated white woman, the getto black marine, and even the Gay Rebublican living close you wants a leader who will speak for them as well. Enough of Reagan/Bush/Mccain politics for at least the next 4 years.

Alfredo,
in regards to your facts on this race. u do have a point. yes! to win those states would put anyone in a good position. you and the clinton gang are also saying that the many, many other states that obama won by a landslide has no effect on the race. on the contrary to obamas so called bitter remarks, ur saying these little states count for nothing. so as long as clinton wins these 3 or 4 states the win is locked. get real man! the maccain camp tag teams with clinton on obama for one reason only. thats because they know that a race against clinton would be a much easier win as oppose to challenging obama. btw, thanks hillary for supporting this war that im fighting over here in iraq. third time in this s##thole. thinking of building a home over here.

If Obama becomes President in conjunction with the Democrat Controlled House and senate plus the Justices that are retiring, I’m seriously concerned as to whether or not we’ll even have a country in 2025.

Seriously, I used to be more afraid of Hillary being President, but now I’m more afraid of Obama being President, I keep expecting another Bill Ayers to come out of the closet, or another Wright coming out from under Obama’s bed.

Another thing that disgusts me about the Obama campaign is that anyone that criticizes him is labeled a racist. You know that is a classic way of hiding something, blame the whistle-blower.
