Obama Releases 2007 Taxes

The Obama campaign released the Obamas’ 2007 federal tax returns on its website today, showing the couple made nearly $4 million from Barack Obama’s books, “The Audacity of Hope” and “Dreams From My Father.” This is a big jump in income for the couple, who pulled in close to one million dollars in 2006.

Today on a conference call, Campaign Manager David Plouffe was asked by a reporter if the campaign would release Senator Obama’s tax returns from 1997-99 as the Clinton camp has requested. Plouffe replied by saying his candidate had released taxes from the entire decade, presumably referring to 2000s, but did not say whether or not they would release returns from the previous decade.

“We think on issues of transparency and disclosure, which is important in making sure people have faith in their government again, Senator Obama has released all of his earmarks, something Senator Clinton has not done,” Plouffe said.

Obama’s tax returns at a glance:

Total income: $4,238,165

Adjusted gross income: $4,139,965

Salaried income: $260,735

Net profit from books: $3,943,378

Federal taxes paid: $1,396,772

Total charitable contributions for 2007: $240,370

Time for Senators Clinton and McCain to do the same thing. What does everybody else think?

Comment by EJ

Something doesn’t add up here. I cannot believe that Obama’s Senate pay and his wife’s attorney’s pay amounts to only $260,735. Didn’t she get a raise to $200,000 per year when he started running for president????? This needs to be checked out. I smell a rat somewhere, Oh, I mean two rats.

Comment by Kevin in NC

EJ…regarding your comments…”something doesn’t add up here.” These are 2007 tax returns that are being scrutinized. Did you forget Michelle Obama didn’t work this year? She has been on the campaign trail with Obama since January 2007.

Comment by EJ

I don’t think she’s been on the campaign trail all the time. She made the statement that she wouldn’t leave her children more than two days at a time and if she’s been on the trail ALL the time, we would have seen her more or he may just try to keep her hid because she can’t keep her mouth shut. I don’t know where she’s working or not, but if she isn’t why was the big deal made over her increase. I don’t think you get an increase in pay if you’re not on the job.

Duty, Honor, Integrity, Service:::I don’t think BHO has ever been accused of that.
McCain 08

Liberalism is a mental disease.

Comment by kathy WI

EJ. She was at a high school telling the kids they weren’t elitists. She told them that never have people been struggling so hard. I guess that liberal education didn’t tell her about the great depression or stagflation under Jimmy C. Maybe she should have talked to her grand parents about struggle.

Comment by EJ

She’s been out once in a while, I guess if the “right” people are there, like Oprah Winfrey, Caroline Kennedy and Maria Shriver. I notice that even when she’s there, he gets her off the stage while he makes his speeches and she may or may not come back to go out into the crowd with him. She just seems a little snobbish to me. But you know that happens sometimes when someone doesn’t have money until they are grown and then come into money, it really goes to their heads. That didn’t happen with the Clintons. They still seem to be just as down home as they’ve always been.

Comment by Kevin in NC

EJ…she did get somewhat of a big raise at one point in her career, but that was when her husband was an Illinois Senator, not when he was running for president. Does anyone think Senator Clinton and Senator McCain should release their 2007 tax returns?

Comment by TRS

I wonder how much Obama donated to his racist church or Muslim charities?

Comment by ari

Mcain hasn’t released anything yet. Obama is still the less fortunate qua assets, anyway if he goes all the way, qua money he doesn’t have to worry about, he can probably topple Bill, insane amounts people get for a speech. Must say don’t see Bush going on the speech trail, or get any takers.

Did anyone see John McCain on the MSNBC college tour. He really did a good job. He impressed me and I think he impressed the young audience that was there to her him. As an undecided voter I really admire how Senator McCain iS going after everybodys vote…not just one main constituency. I think he will get a lot of votes if he continues to seek votes, even in places where people are least likely to vote for him. EVERY VOTE WILL COUNT IN THE GENERAL JUST LIKE IT IS NOW IN PRIMARY.

It looks like Michelle did work last year…

“In May, she reduced her work schedule to 20 percent in order to meet the needs of her family while participating in the campaign.

“She was intending to take a full leave of absence, but she couldn’t make herself separate from this professional career that’s been so important to her,” says Susan Sher, vice president for legal and governmental affairs at the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she is Mrs. Obama’s boss. “Her involvement in her work life has been so serious that it’s not easy to just say, ‘Never mind.’ ”

The charitable donations are of interest. Once again, The Rev Wright and the church is part of that donation. This rev. and it seems the church goes along by their clapping to be anti-anything but black. The donation to the United Negro Fund also says allot. I don’t think this man is a representative of all people….Which explains his bitter statement.

Comment by M Period

Why are people debating if their tax returns are right. Does anyone really think they would commit tax fraud and then release their tax forms to everyone to review? They made 4.2 M paid their taxes, gave money to charity and thats it. Not a story they only reason they did it was so they can call for the Clinton’s to do the same so they can point out questionable contributions Bill got.

WOW $50,000 to United Negro college fund and $26,000 to Rev. Wright -
Seems a little “one sided” to me - how about just CHARITY - FOR ALL.
Is this how he will be as a President for ALL Americans???

re ari: “Why did he not show up at faith based meeting” ….I agree. He should have taken part in that also. I know I’m just as interested to know where he stands on religion as I am with Obama and Hillary. You know, we all talk about candidates being vetted and Obama being the least vetted, but I think I know him better than the other two candidates, who have been a houshold name for me for the past twenty years. I feel this way because I think the press has jumped on every little blunder Obama has made, wheather intended or not…and if there is something in his past, I really think the media would have found it by now.

Comment by M Period

Ann Marie, or anyone who wants to claim that Church is racist. Can anyone let me know where you’re getting that from. I can direct you to about 2 dozen local (im from Chicago) charities that United (and thus Obama’s donations) funded. Its wrong to vilify an entire Church for 30 seconds of comments made by one guy who used to work their. Its like me saying all Catholics are perverts because of there are priests who were. Research the church and the good they’ve done before you talk bad about an entire group.

Kevin, confused on McCain stand on issues, its a hotchpot of ideas that sounds unlike him, naturally its election, and his fiscal responsibility theme is not great selling point, but am loosing track what he stands for.
Successful residential candidacies depend on narratives as much as on specific policies — Ronald Reagan as the foe of bloated government, Bill Clinton as a Mr. Fix-It for an economy in recession, George W. Bush as the “compassionate conservative,” etc. Going into ‘08, McCain appeared to have a narrative ready-made: He was going to run as the budget-balancing grown-up, the old-school Republican out to restore sanity to Washington after the binges of the Bush years. But his campaign seems to have decided that it would be folly to run as the candidate of belt-tightening and balanced budgets in a year when economic insecurity is uppermost in voters’ minds. Thus the grab-bag approach on display in this speech, in which calls for fiscal responsibility jostle for space with tax cuts and giveaways of various kinds.

What’s he hiding from 1997-1999? What’s the big deal about releasing those? They won’t release them and then attack Hillary on earmarks? Like the NY earmarks relating to 9/11?

It is also disturbing to me that Obama’s wife, Michelle, during a speech in Wisconsin , said, “For the first time in my adult lifetime, I’m really proud of my country, because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback.”
Strange. This is a woman who has had a good life, with opportunities few whites or blacks have been given. When she entered Princeton and Harvard and later became a partner in a prestigious law firm, didn’t she feel proud to be an American?
When she and the senator bought their new home, was there no feeling of accomplishment and pride in being a U.S. citizen? When her husband was elected to the state legislature and subsequently to the United States Senate, didn’t she feel proud of her country?
__________________________________________________________
I wonder if Michelle is proud to be an American now, after the $4M?

Comment by BRUCE

What if a minister in a church attended primarily by white congregants or a rabbi in a synagogue attended primarily by Jews made comparable statements that were hostile to African-Americans? I have no doubt that the congregants would have immediately stood up and openly denounced the offending cleric.
Others would have criticized that cleric in private. Some would surely have ended their relationships with their congregation. Obama didn’t do any of these things.

RE: Ari…”confused on McCain stand on issues”…Thanks for the link, the article is enlightning with a hint of favoratism. I have read articles such as this about all the candidates and I find that the only way I can make a true judgement of who I am gonna vote for is seeing them in situations where their true personalities can come out, such as….Hillary addressing black men in prison or Obama granting an interview to FOXnews or McCain going in the urban areas addressing poverty and education. I know that all candidates must run on a platform to be appealling, but what’s gonna happen when they get in the White House?….look at Bush.

Rev. Wright hates white America so much that his church is building him a 10,000 sq.ft. compound in a white neighborhood in Chicago. I guess hate speech is really profitable?

“The BTK killer was a decon of his church for 25-30 years. He did great work in his community. He also killed people!”

How on Earth does this relate to Obama? I mean really. Barack’s completely denounced all the hateful things his pastor said, and was quick to do so, but because he forgave Rev. Wright for being an imperfect human being and wouldn’t denounce him as a person (REAL Christian behavior, I think), people like you assume Obama is some kind of black supremacist, despite being HALF WHITE. I really don’t see how any sane individual could jump to that conclusion, particularly after seeing Obama’s race speech in which he addressed the issues with his pastor head on.

@TRS: Why do you think Obama would contribute ANYTHING to Muslim charities? Because of his name? Seriously? I mean, he’s pretty obviously a Christian; what would he be doing in that “racist” church you keep babbling about if he were Muslim?

Obama-Auchi Connection Becoming Clearer (by Fleaflicker)
April 15, 2008 · 3 Comments

Introduction by TexasDarlin:
The company he keeps, it keeps raising eyebrows. From his earliest days, Barack has befriended and associated with one questionable character after another. If there were one bad apple along the way, it would barely be noticed. But Barack and Michelle seem to be attracted to ex-terrorists, crooks, American-haters, anti-semites, supremacists, Marxists….When will it strike the collective conscience that this guy’s baggage is just too explosive? — td

You have heard of him. His name is Nadhmi Auchi and he is VERY wealthy. And you might also know that he is a good friend of slumlord and political fixer, Tony Rezko. The same Tony Rezko that is a good friend of Barack Obama. The same guy that helped finance his political career. And the very same Tony Rezko that helped Barack and Michelle Obama buy their nice mansion. But here are a few things you might not know about Nadhmi Auchi.

@TBK: I just read the first link you sent, the whole interview, top to bottom, and I feel it contributed much more to my argument than yours. Obama explained the situation clearly, and I think he did really well for himself in it, despite the derogatory and obviously biased way the sun interviewed him.

As for the second link, here’s a quote from it: “Obama and his aides have said Obama has no recollection of ever meeting Auchi.” Thanks for putting the words right there in front of me! So they went to a gathering where the guy was present once, so what? I think a quick look at the comments box for that second link (yet another silly blog; where’s the real news reporting on this stuff? oh, that’s right, there isn’t any, because it’s all a bunch of ****) will tell you everything you need to know about the legitimacy of it’s claims.

Comment by John

And a quote from your third link:

“It was a very innocuous, almost serendipitous, ad hoc thing,” Chicago real estate lawyer Anthony Licata, who was also there, told the Tribune. “Barack happened to be in the same building at a campaign event that night, and he stopped by to say hello. I’m not even sure he knew who those guys were.”

Well, there you go! Thanks, it’s been fun.

Stuart Levine, the government’s star witness, said Obama and his wife, Michelle, were among the guests at Rezko’s home on April 3, 2004, for the party honoring Nadhmi Auchi, an Iraqi-born tycoon currently appealing a fraud conviction in France.

As he campaigns for president, Obama has acknowledged social and political ties to Rezko, as well as a real estate deal between the two that involved Obama’s South Side home. But Obama has not disclosed his presence at the Auchi party, which Rezko threw as part of a campaign to persuade Auchi to pour money into a financially troubled 62-acre development in the South Loop.
————————————————————————————————————— If the party was honoring Auchi how could Obama not recall “honoring” Auchi. Surely, you would think, Obama would meet the guest of honor.

CLINTON KICKED ASS!

She was articulate, answered questions with solutions, she was strong, presidential and you felt secure when she answered questions about the war, guns and the economy.

Obama would understand what happened to him tonight via a basketball expression
Hillary slam-dunked Obama on each answer.

Obama stammered when he was unsure on how to answer a question.
He went off on tangents trying to avoid the question.
He tried to evade a question and steer his answer by using his talking points.
Which only demonstrated, that Obama did not have full command of some of the topics
that he was questioned on.

CNN take a lesson on how to moderate a debate from ABC News with Charles Gibson and Stephanopoulos moderating. They did an excellent job by not permitting either candidate to evade the question or ramble on. And they did not pamper either candidate.

BEST DEBATE THUS FAR, CONGRULATIONS GIBSON AND STEPHANOPOULOS.

Really,
So, how many human beings have gone to the polls so far and cast votes for Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama?
2008 Popular vote totals:
28,438,697

Hillary Cinton 14,153,162

obama 14,285,535

The popular vote total is the votes cast by individuals in state primaries. Caucus votes don’t count in the popular vote total because they are counted in terms of delegates, not votes, and many states don’t count the number of people attending caucuses.
Bottom Line: Hillary and Obama each have 50% of the popular vote. They are separated by 130,000 votes. There are 10 states left with up to 12 million potential voters
This is why the left wing wants Hillary to drop out. Hillary will have a higher popular vote total in the end.

For example, there is Cone’s 1969 opus, Black Theology and Black Power, in which he helpfully explains:

Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community…. Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy. What we need is the divine love as expressed in Black Power, which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject his love.

Black liberation theology, as Wright has elaborated, is closely aligned with the “liberation theology” of Nicaragua during the seventies and eighties: i.e., the doctrine that catalyzed Marxist revolutionaries.

From National Review

I guess his 4 million will help and his radical associates see this theology out.
