Obama’s “Bitter” Defense Now Part of his Stump

It started as a response to attacks from his rivals that he was “out of touch” for saying working class Pennsylvanians cling to guns and religion because they’re embittered by decades of economic hardship. But now, Barack Obama has begun to incorporate part of that response — that average Americans are indeed angry, frustrated, and yes, bitter — into his standard remarks, saying those that disagree are themselves out of touch.

During a typical stump speech in Philadelphia last night, Obama said “people really are angry, they really are fed up. Some of them are really bitter, because Washington has forgotten them. And that it’s not me who’s out of touch, it’s folks who think that somehow folks are happy when they’re out of a job and they’ve lost their pension, and they don’t have health care, and their schools are under funded. I know exactly what folks are going through.”

He then turned the controversy back to his signature — a more hopeful brand of politics. “Sometimes, hope and anger go hand in hand. You’ve got to get angry about your circumstances to want to bring about change, but you’ve got to have hope to believe that change can happen,” he said.

And today at a speech to union members in Washington, Obama strayed from his prepared remarks to address the anger and bitterness he’s seen in American voters. “There’s been a lot of fuss over the last couple of days because I said that people were bitter. People seemed to misunderstand what that means” he said. “Yes people are angry. If you’ve been filling up your gas tank you’re angry. If you’ve watched your entire community decimated because a steel plant has closed, that’ll make you mad. You’ve got to feel some frustration. You’ve got to feel some anger, when you get a sense that the American way of life for so many people feels like it’s slipping away.”

“But just because you’re mad, just because it seems like nobody’s listening to ordinary Americans, that’s not a reason to give up hope. You get mad, and then you decide you’re gonna change it. If you’re not angry about something, then you’re gonna sit back and let it happen to you. But if you’re only angry, and you don’t feel hopeful, then you’re not gonna get the energy to change it.”

Obama said that just like most Americans, he’s mad himself, but remains hopeful. “I know how hard things are. I know how frustrated people are. And if anybody denies that people are frustrated and angry, and yes sometimes bitter, then they are out of touch. They’re ignoring the truth of what’s been happening in our communities for far too long. People feel like nobody’s looking out for them.”

Obama has now mentioned the controversy over his comments at every stop since they came to light on Friday. But he doesn’t always talk about the most controversial segment — his claim that voters turn to God and guns because they’re bitter. The Illinois Senator claims that he misspoke, saying he regrets if people were offended by his choice of words.

Clinton spokesman Phil Singer says members of the Obama campaign “are trying to recast what Senator Obama said and focus on the least controversial elements.”

Senior Obama spokesman Hari Sevugan says “Senator Obama has addressed his comments fully, honestly and repeatedly, and Senator Clinton the Clinton campaign know that,” calling Singer’s response “a perfect example of the type of played-out political games that have left Americans frustrated with their leaders and yearning for change.”

“The Clinton campaign can continue to focus on Senator Obama in the closing days of this campaign if they want to, but Senator Obama is going to focus on the challenges facing our families.”

With everything happening I just have one question. Obama spent 20 years at a church where the man he said was so very important to his family. who baptized his children, was an instrument used by God to call him to his faith yet he didn’t listen to the man’s sermon. What kind of evidence can Obama give his voters that once he gets that vote he will listen any better to those people who he has never met?

Obama’s pushing the bitter/angry/mad routine very hard it appears. So now he’s sowing resentment?

By the way Senator Obama….you may be sticking to “bitter”..but you’re not telling working class Americans that they’re bible thumping, gun totting, bigots anymore? Did you change your mind on that?

People are bitter about the situation in Washington. We will soon be paying $4.00 for a gallon of gas. The cost of grocieries has skyrocketed. Basic goods and services are continuing to increase in price. The service industries fail to meet expectations. Our daily lives are constantly being barraged by robo calls from any number of sources and we get junk faxes and e-mails all the time. When we watch television we have to put up with all of the commericials and then the racy programing (why do I have to see someone’s bare backside on public television–isn’t that what HBO is for?) When we turn on the news we get very little good news about good people doing good things and plenty of news about bad people doing bad things, not to mention all of the talking heads telling us what to think, as if we can not think for ourselves. Our politicians look out for themselves first, their financial contributors second and the rest of us last.
What ever happened to decent hard work, fundamental principles of life and liberty, and the basic belief in fairness and justice. We can still have these. The question is are we willing to make the sacrifices today necessary to recapture what we have given up.

I’m not bitter, but I’m disgusted with the Democrats (not that I’m surprised by Obama’s elitist attitude).

Put who his pastor is, his friends, his wife, and the comments he’s made all together and you’ll come to the conclusion that he is a left-wing lunatic that is a racist.

It wasn’t the “bitter” comment that people like me are upset about. This is what I think that Obama thinks about me. I am a typical white women who is clinging to god and my guns due to hard times. The most insulting is his insinuation that I will also become a bigot. He hasn’t a clue what life is like for me. He states that he was raised by his mother and on food stamps. This was until he was 2 years old. How many of you remember what was happening in your life at 2 years old. After that he was raised by his grandparents. He actually said that what he was saying was true. He also said this behind closed doors. We were not supposed to hear these comments. That is even worse. Talking to rich San Francisco far far left liberals about what we as a people are like.

NO to Obama. If he really wants a democrat elected this general election he should get out of the race now. Thank god for John McCain.

Oh, one last thought. Calling Clinton Annie Oakley would be a compliment. If he new the history of Annie Oakley then he would have never likened Clinton to her. Annie Oakley went down in history as an extraordinary women. If the man does not know what he is talking about he should keep his mouth shut. Just like he said that Clinton was in a duck blind with a six shooter. What a fraud.

When I hear people talking about sacrificing to obtain things that are gifts from God like liberty, freedom of thought and deed, and the justice and equality our constitution already has inspired by the values of our founding fathers–I wonder what the ulterior motivation is for ignoring these things.

In our modern world the messages can be mixed and we can lose sight of those things that are precious to us. We can ignore the bad signals–we can turn off the phone and T.V., and we can choose to not be affected by some of the negative things which permeate our lives.

But to relinquish those God given freedoms and rights–for some half-baked urban focused socialist inspired government managed social engineering plan–is not my cup of tea.

Millions of Americans have already sacrificed a lot to allow us the freedoms we have today–I won’t relinquish a single one (even the annoying ones) with a long a “bitter” fight—with the option of clinging to my “guns’>.

Comment by Tel...

Essentially what Obama’s doing is two things right now…by appealing to emotions by pushing “bitter and angry”..(which I think is a wrong move anyway) he’s trying to divert from the rest of the quote (the guns, god and racism part) and he cannot admit he actually does view rural/working class America in that way because it will cost him the nomination.

He’s screwed.

Comment by Kiss my but

As Obama himself said Clinton is like Annie Oakley who fights for causes, and rights you go Clinton!

“In America, we have this strong bias toward individual action. You know, we idolize the John Wayne hero who comes in to correct things with both guns blazing. But individual actions, individual dreams, are not sufficient. We must unite in collective action, build collective institutions and organizations.” — Barack Obama, Chicago Reader, Dec. 8, 1995.

So we all know Obama really thinks of us hard working middle class. We should not think individual dreams or actions but think as the government thinks… Are you all voting for Obama NUTS?

I love Hillary and Bill. For all you Obama lovers out there, get a life! You are just jealous of her because she made a $109 million in 7 years, far more than any of you are going to make in a life time.
So what if she lies a bit? So what if she actually voted for gun control while trying to give the impression that she is for guns? So what if she was pro NAFTA before and changed her mind now? So what if Mark Penn got money from the Colombians? So what if she made some anti-semitic remarks? So what if she is a bit manipulative? So what if Bill screwed around in the white house?

So what if Barack Obama was raised by a single mom and got a full scolarship to good schools? SO what if he is bright and articulate? So what if he was right about the Iraq war?
So what if he introduced 800 bills as a state legislator? So what if his vision for a new politics was fleshed out in 1995? So what if he is half black and half white and has a good idea about the world? So what if anyone who knows him personally says he is a man of uncommon wisdom?

I dont care about all that. I just know he kinda makes me uncomfortable and I know Hillary wont be great but she will be more of the same. ANd how bad are things anyway? I am not bitter, I am not frustrated with the way things are. I am quite happy with things. This is the greatest country in the world. And no Senator Obama, we can do without any improvements or pointers about how to make it even better, thank you very much.

What is it with this guy. Why can’t he simply flat out apologize about things. He is like a spoiled kid. ‘No one gonna tell me what to say’. I liked the guy at first but he is one arrogant boy. I say boy cause that is what he is. An inexperienced, smooth talking boy compared to the other experienced stateman like candidates that are running. Its sad though that from a pool of over 300 million in America this is what have to choose from. Although I never have and still don’t like Hillary yet after watching her through this process you got to admit she can hold her own. So she won’t be pushed around by other country leaders. Russia will chew up the boy. Fact is this newly discoverd personality that has risen to the surface had it been shown early in the campaign the boy would be sucking wind right now. Trouble is it may be too late for the party.

Christopher,

I agree. I would also include MSNBC and CNN. They are all elitists and all feel that way about the majority of Americans. This is why the democrats are not winning the white house. They are all so out of touch. They think we are hicks and stupid. Well they will learn they are wrong come November. They seem to forget that the stupid typical white middle class who cling to god and guns and will eventually become bigots are the majority in this country.

I am a republican from a small town in Pennsylvania & I see allot of bitterness in people who have lost their jobs, they shoot guns, they “claim” to be religious people who go to church every sunday but yet they use racist slurs towards jews, mexicans, blacks, and muslims. Again, this does not descripe the majority of the people in rural Pa. But what he said is NOT untrue. We just like to sugar coat things & pretend that stuff like that doesn’t exist…. Or at least in Hillarys mind they dont.

Twenty years in a pew of hate has finally risen to the surface. Obama didn’t notice offensive remarks because he was simply not offended by Rev. Wright’s racists and elitist speech. Now, when he has accidentally spilled his own brand of hate he has not correctly apologized. Obama you have lost my confidence. What you said is inexcusable and America appears to agree. I want my primary vote back and expect the super delegates to reflect the new feelings about your candidacy. Sad that this rose to the surface after the California primary. I’m bitter.

I’m bitter that our government is too big and too intrusive. I’m bitter that those who are irresponsible with their finances (individuals and businesses alike) continue to get bailed out by those of us who plan ahead for the bad times. I’m bitter about the sense of entitlement being spread throughout America. Yeah, I’m bitter, but Obama’s solutions will make me more bitter, not less. The problem is too much government, not too little.

Do you realize what he was saying about “clinging to guns or religion”? He was saying that people who are suffering through economic hardship get distracted in politics (mostly due to the politicians) instead of focusing on the issues that are hitting them the hardest. They vote for a politician because he or she is for gun rights or anti-abortion or pro-gay marriage. And it makes no sense to be voting for someone based on these issues when you are trying to figure out how you are going to feed your family. But the elected officials do a great job at politicizing these issues and dividing our country based on them.

Don’t be swayed by the labels that the media and political opponents are trying to place on Obama such as “elitist”. He is the best hope that working class america has.

Does Barack Obama need to be reminded that he is a part of the Washington he’s talking about people being tired of? All the issues that the candidates are saying that the Americans are frustrated with, (gas prices, healthcare, etc) all these candidates are in Congress….they all are and have been for years now, in a position to do something about ALL THE ISSUES THAT THEY ARE MAKING SUCH BIG PROMISES ABOUT!!…..The President can only do so much…he does not dictate to Congress….and everybody knows the
Congress has not worked together or with the President for a very long time now, even before Bush got elected. So the Candidates all need to DO SOMETHING, INSTEAD OF RUNNING FOR OFFICE, WHICH IS WHAT HILLARY AND OBAMA HAVE BEEN DOING SINCE THEY GOT ELECTED…….Bush has made some mistakes,,,,,all presidents do…..including the mighty Clinton,,,,but THE CONGRESS IS THE GROUP THAT WE NEED TO REDO…. and God help us all if either one of the Democrats gets elected….they are making a big enough joke out of our election progress without carrying it into the Presidency of the most powerful and best country in the world.

Do some research on Annie Obama. She was still setting records after over coming great odds in her 60’s. At the time of her death she had spent her fortune on her family and her charities. Hey, maybe she is Annie.

The republicans proudly admit to have invented the big 3 “Wedge Issues” of Guns, God, and Gays, as a way of dividing small town Americans against their urban neighbors and distracting them from the fact they are losing their jobs and falling behind. Now, when Obama dares to tell the truth about it and say this needs to change, they have the nerve to call him an elitist. Of course the elitist republicans want to keep the system they created. But, that cat has been out of the bag for a while on this. Obama’s remarks were just echoing the premise from the book What’s the Matter with Kansas.
Obama did NOT say small town Americans were “bible-thumping, gun toting, racists,” but maybe some of the people posting to this board are mad at his remarks because they do fit that description.

I am so glad that you all are not getting off bamalam’s ass about his flaws as there are so many. Everybody else is afraid to point out the fact that this guy is very bad for America because he then just points back and says, “Racist!” All the bamabots in the media shake their heads and smile and proceed to tear down the person who dared to speak againt him. I don’t know what kind of hold he has on these people, but they ignore anything that makes him look bad. The fact of the matter is that he is as much white as he is black. Just refer to him as, “That white guy named Hussain.” He is a confused white guy with a giant chip on his shoulder who has been mentored by a bunch of Chicago radicals who hate America. He chose this path after he left his privliged upper class white guy life at Harvard. Yes we all should be measured by the people we chose to associate with. He has chosen to spend lots of quality time with lots of questionalbe people who do not like America. He has been able to convince so many Americans that it is the words he speaks that are important not his actions or inactions. Keep up the good work! Go forth and do good works, guys and gals!!!!! !!

I WANT TO CONGRAGULATE EVERYBODY THAT PARTICIPATED IN MY E-MAIL CAMPAIGN—-BILL HEMMER, WHY DON’T YOU GROW A PAIR.

I know that any results right now are probably premature and we won’t truly know for months down the road but right now it looks promising. Today, I saw a show that was actually delightful to watch. Hemmer, seemed to step up to the plate and take charge of his part of the show. Kelly actually seemed accomodating in letting him do so. Kelly had seemed to tone herself down from overbearing and aggressive to just assertive and thats fine. It was so nice to see Hemmer not trembling and not wincing because he ws afraid of Kelly slapping him and telling him to shut up. I think its way to early to remove his nickname, GUMBY but I think we’ll all agree when the time is right.

Oh so interesting how an African American has been painted by the Clintons and McCain as an “elitest,” detached from the everyday world and problems of real people. And, here we have comments about Obama’s background, about how he was raised in the lap of luxury by his grandparents. And Hillary, so in touch with common folk. She was a relatively privileged child who attended schools for the privileged, including an elite college and graduate school. She and Bill earned, what, over $100 million in the past eight years? And that wasn’t by way of the super lottery. Now, Country John McCain, who comes comes from a long line of distinguished, high-ranking Navy officers. Anyone who has ever served in the military can vouch for the fact that an admiral’s family doesn’t live in a trailer park on the edge of town. Indeed, officers of his parents’ era were considered a privileged class in social and professional circles. I’m reminded of how President George W. Bush reshaped his public image to that of “the common man.” How did that happen?

Jobs that we have worked on most of our lives we are over fifty years old looking at retirement and our jobs are moving out of the country. Come on get real! I do not think Obama is looking down on any one , I know for a fact that if it was not for my faith and my family I would be put out. I am glad that Obama put emphasis on family and our faith. for GOD IS TRULY SUSTAINING ME. Obama is an enlitist ? shame on you. I encourage you to read his statement with an open mind. Forget about what Hillary is trying to do. I have always been a Clinton fan but lately I am so disgusted with her and her husband and bitter too, because I thought more of them. Even if it is Hillary or McCain at least it will be a change. Bush does not mean what he says, he said the war would be short and we were going for weapons of mass desctruction. Both were lies. How soon we forget. People are bitter. I am bitter because I am stuck in a home less than its value. I belive I have good reason along with many other americans. Don’t be so busy hating Obama that you don’t realize America is in a huge mess. All of you calling him anit-american (you actually mean-not white), you know you will not vote for a black many anyway. The bitter thing did not change your mind about him, you already had it made up. As for Hillary, it’s ok to lie about dodging sniper fire but not ok to call people bitter. Get real people.

Barbara e,
Your attitude is exactly the one that Obama was talking about. You say that you have it hard and he does not know what it means I do not believe that his grandmother was rich by any means or he would not have had to work to put himself through school. Why would you vote republican if you already have it hard. McCain being Christian and pro gun is not going to put food on the table. You vote him into office and then you can not complain when gas if five dollars due to the war, you have poor healthcare and there are even less jobs available for americans.

I guess you can conclude that small town America and gangsta rappers have more in common then we thought.

It’s too bad that we have a political reality that leans toward ideological and personal attacks, rather than considered analysis. Whenever Barack Obama attempts to discuss an unpleasant set of facts, like the immense disparities in wealth, education, health care and power, in general, the political vultures who feed off of 24 -7 news cycles are there to pick apart all the bones.

Anyone who wants to find out, not who is Pastor is, or who his wife is, but who HE is, should take a few minutes to read a few pages of either of his two impressive books. Hear his voice, talking about his own life, and the decisions he’s made, and why he’s made them, and what his values are and what he’s committed to.

After that, none of these absurd attacks will mean anything…. this man is truly impressive, because he doesn’t refrain from intelligent reflection, despite the hazards of doing so, politically.

The national anthem also states for the land of the free and the home of the brave at a time when not everyone was so free. Get over the lapel pin. He also stated that he is not going to get pulled into the whole politics of patriotism, that is why he chooses not to wear it.

I can’t believe some of you people. If you take Obama’s comment literally it makes no sense - people are clinging to guns as a way of explaining their frustrations? How does a gun explain a frustration? That makes no sense! Blaming immigrants is, however, a way of explaining frustrations.

It’s obvious that he did exactly what he said he did - mangled together several thoughts.

It is TRUE that people turn to religion, family, issues, in times of crisis. That doesn’t mean they ONLY turn to those things in times of crisis, just that, for many people, they take on more importance in those times.

And it is TRUE that people who’ve lost their jobs, seen their local economy fall apart, and have had repeated promises from government come to nothing are quite bitter about it - and rightfully so.

And I ask you one more question: how many of you would be happy to be judged, completely and totally, on ONE comment you’ve made, regardless of whether it can be misinterpreted or not, with everything else you’ve ever said, written, or done ignored? Because that’s exactly what a whole lot of you are doing right now.

This guy wants to be our President and control our government. Pay close attention to the last comment!! Below are a few lines from Obama’s books ” his words:

From Dreams of My Father: “I ceased to advertise my mother’s race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites.”

From Dreams of My Father : “I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mothers race.”

From Dreams of My Father: “There was something about him that made me wary, a little too sure of himself, maybe. And white.”

From Dreams of My Father: ; “It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names.”

From Dreams of My Father: “I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn’t speak to my own. It was into my father’s image, the black man, son of Africa , that I’d packed all the attributes I sought in myself, the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela.”

From Audacity of Hope: “I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.”

Why are Obama’s comments considered condescending? Does anyone have a link to the full text of the speech? It is hard for me to gague the tone of the remark frum just the excerpted quotes in most of the media coverage.

There’s so many errors with what you said… First and foremost, the high gas prices are not the result of the conflict in Iraq. Get the notion out of your head if you want to present a credible argument. McCain has proposed a tax freeze on Gas for the summer. Obama didn’t..(if he had, he’d have voted “present” anyway).

The unemployment rate is still low compared to recent decades. You’re either fear mongering or propagandising for Obama.

“The Clintons were too dimwitted to understand that a healthy, integrated adult can hold two realities in his head at the same time.

I agree: you can be angry and hopeful at the same time.

Kudos to Obama for raising the level of dialogue during the primary season. He speaks to voters as though they were adults. This guy is the real deal and will be our next President.

And if someone accuses me of being an Obamabot, let me say this: I can hold two realities in my head. I can still prefer Obama and keep my feet on the ground.”

Yes, Sal, you can hold two thoughts in your head: you can prefer to live in this country and not care that it goes to hell in a handbasket by turning it over to this socialist. Nah, I don’t think he will be your next president…sorry.

You don’t get it either. We are a very resilient people. We don’t need Obama’s tax raising freebie’s. If we need to learn to do something new we will. You apparently don’t live in a small town or have any pride either. And as to the flag pin. He can go to h— as far as I am concerned. I have family that died in WWI and WWII that was just demeaned by Obama. You can leave this country with Obama and his unpatriotic wife anytime you want.

Barbara I fail to see how those comments are relevant to this discussion. Is there a complete text of Obama’s remarks anywhere on the internet? I find that it is very difficult to gague the tone of the remarks from the tiny soundbites in the media.

Obama is a clueless fool. How can this guy be sostupid to say this stuff. I woundn’t vote for him if he was running for dog catcher.

LOL….You guys just don’t get it! Obama campaign set all of this up. Do you really think they didnt know the lady from the HUFFINGTON POST was recording in there. They new that it would be easy to cover up, plus lower his expectations in PA, plus make Hillary attack him, so he can attack back. Hillary and her dumb supporters took the bate and so did John The 100 McCain. I used to support Clinton until i saw how stupid her campaign is. John the 100 and Hillary fell for the Rev Wright crap. Don’t you know that was going to come out anyways, what’s the odds of that coming out in the longest space between two primarys. What’s the odds of this “Bittergate” coming out over the weekend. You guys are idots if you think this wasnt a strategy. Now look at him, so his poll numbers are dropping in PA. BIG DEAL! he wasnt going to win there anyways. But, what he has successfully done is make Hillary out a “Republican Manchurian” candidate. He is fundrasing off of this now. Go to his website. He will come out of this untouched, minor blemish in the polls, with higher respect from the Superdelegates, because “he made it through another battle with the republicans.” Thank God, im an independent if i were a republican i would be really scared because facing this guy. You are in some trouble. Why? He wins because both democrats and republicans underestimate his machivellian style, remember he is a Chicago politician. Good Luck. DEMS AND REPUB

Obama was not comparing Clinton to Annie he was laughing because she was trying to act like Annie. He was pointing out that there the two are not the same. Clinton trying to be Annie is a barrel of laughs.
Also to Rashaonda.
I’m quite sure you were born in the United States and I congradulate your assessment of the lapel pin, it was right on.

My wife and I live on less than $27,000 per year in a double wide trailer with a 30 year morgauge of $453.00 per month. We moved to the country so we could afford to live on our income. We own a 1991 chevy truck that gets 22 mph with 217,000 miles on the odometer. It is 25 miles to the closest town. Gasoline in our area is $3.61 per gal. The price of food, heating oil, propane, even the firewood to heat our home has gone up.

And yet, neither the Republicans or the Democrats have done anyhing to help America. Rather, they have raised our taxes every time they could for the last 16 years.

Senator Obama has not said one word about what his “Plan is for Change” is or for helping us other than to say he wil raise taxes on the rich. But everytime the taxes go up on the rich, a mill or factory or industry has to “downsize” or close completely, putting many poor families in our area out of work, resulting in the closing of several more small business.

Yes, Senator Obama, I am unhappy with you and the Democrats and the Republicans and Hilary Clinton and John Mc Cain. And that is why I am seriously considering not voting for the first time in forty years for any President. Simpley because I do not know which of the candidates has a plan to help all Americans, regardless of ethnicity or religion or politcal affiliation or wealth.

However, if one of the candidates comes up with some real, logical and workable solutions, I will reconsider my positiion of not voting.

Anna,

In regards to his speech where he “accused” Clinton of being Annie Oakley he was smiling because very few people were laughing. He actually had to say ” Come on now” with a very insecure smile on his face. Why don’t you watch it again.
