Barack Obama says Hillary Clinton should stay in the race for the Democratic nomination, since the continued excitement over the primary has energized the party.
“Maybe I’m a contrarian here, but I actually do believe this has been good for the party. Because, each state where we’ve participated you’ve record turnout, record registrations, people being engaged and excited about politics like they haven’t been before,” he told a sold-out crowd of journalists and newspapermen at the annual Associated Press luncheon in Washington.
Obama called Clinton a “formidable opponent,” but even in his praise he reminded reporters of his dominant lead over the Senator from New York. “There aren’t many figures in American politics who could have sustained 11 straight losses and hang into a race and raise $35 million,” he said.
While he said he’s tried to take the high road in the primary to keep from hurting the party in November, Obama claimed “it’s a little easier for me to say that since I lead in delegates and states and popular vote. Senator Clinton may not feel that she can afford to be as constrained.”
And he even accused her — quite nicely, of course — of using GOP-style attacks, saying “”I’m sure that Senator Clinton feels like she’s doing me a great favor because she’s been deploying most of the arguments that the Republican party will be using against me in November, and so it’s toughening me up.”
Still, Obama acknowledged that the intraparty fighting could be good for his prospective opponent in the Fall. “Obviously the fact that our contest is still going on means that John McCain comes in here and he’s feeling pretty good,” he said. “I suspect he’s getting more sleep than either myself or Senator Clinton are getting.”
And while he’s convinced that Democrats will unify behind a candidate after the convention, that doesn’t mean his family doesn’t want the race to end well before that. “My wife reminded me that I had told her some time last year that, no matter what happens, by February 5th this thing will be over, one way or the other,” he said. “She keeps on looking at her watch.”
The faint praise for Hillary Clinton came just hours after Obama ridiculed his Democratic rival for drinking a shot and a beer with camera crews on her tail to curry favor with working class voters — but the Illinois Senator saved his mockery this time around for John McCain.
He started his speech with a joke tailored to the crowd of journalists — saying, “I know I kept a lot of you guys busy this weekend with the comments I made last week. Some of you might even be a little bitter about that.” But Obama quickly turned serious in defending his statements against GOP attacks.
“Senator McCain and the Republicans in Washington are already looking ahead to the fall and have decided that they plan on using my comments to argue that I’m out of touch with what’s going on in the lives of working Americans,” he said. “If I had to carry the banner for eight years of George Bush’s failures, I’d be looking for something else to talk about too.”
“I may have made a mistake last week in the words that I chose, but the other party has made a much more damaging mistake in the failed policies they’ve chosen and the bankrupt philosophy that they’ve embraced for the last three decades.”

Don’t know how many Fox viewers are like me, but I watch because I am mesmerised by their sheer gall. I loathe the mothers and would be nearly as aghast if they were pushing from the other side of the political divide.
Everything down to the most minute detail is framed to accentuate the positive about Republicans and the negative about Democrats, and it is all done with a straight face.
Look at the cynical way they choose their ‘house ni**ers’ to be the most strident rightist spokespeople. Not saying that these individuals are not genuine in their beliefs, but the fact that they are chosen primarily because they can communicate the stock messages from behind a black face must make them feel more than a little used and abused.
Even if, as they constantly allege, there is ‘left-wing bias’ in what they refer to as the mainstream media (I think fairness bias would be more accurate), it is no excuse whatsoever for Fox’s frontpeople to make their bias so screamingly obvious. You just should not see an interviewer nodding and agreeing with their subject, or asking patsy questions like ‘Does Barack really hate America or is he just unpatriotic?’

Guy, are you kidding me? balance is the reason that Hannity has Colmes on. The last time I watched the show I didn’t walk away with the feeling that Colmes carries the torch for Barry Goldwater or Ronny Reagan.

Rezko Trial Update:
CHICAGO - The government’s star witness at the fraud trial of political fundraiser Antoin “Tony” Rezko testified today that he attended a party for a British billionaire at Rezko’s home, where Sen. Barack Obama and his wife also were among the guests.
Attorney Stuart Levine testified that the party took place in April 2004 and was held to honor Iraqi-born, London-based billionaire Nadhmi Auchi, who was visiting the United States at the time.
Rezko, 52, was a major fundraiser for Obama and Gov. Rod Blagojevich, and the trial has been closely watched because of Obama’s presidential campaign. But very little has been said about the senator thus far.

Obama is using the same kind of ridicule of Sen. Clinton that she is using against him - almost. He is mocking her, she is trying to paint him as an elitist, panderer, etc. I don’t know which is worse.
They both need to stick to the issues. Sen. Clinton has gone overboard with her ad on “bitter.”
That will backfire. I presume she wants to keep that word in front of people up to the Pennsylvania election. It will be interesting to see how long that lasts.
Obama was accurate in his comments - many people are agreeing with him now that they have had more time to think about it. The Clintons are overplaying their hand by forming their own interpretation of his words. That will come back to haunt them, and could hurt the party.
It is just a matter of time. The Clintons will probably win Pennsylvania, but I don’t think it will be by as much as they are hoping. Bill Clinton wants back in the White House so badly, he will insist that his wife stay in for the long haul. He wants a chance to redeem himself. That worries me. We would end up with the same kind of politics. People can change, but they don’t change much.

All he had to say to those at the fundraiser was that the people of small towns have had it tough, but they still raise their families with values, they still are interested in the issues, and they would still rather live here than anywhere else in the world. He could have said they have hope in what we are trying to do with this election. Instead he wanted to portray them as bitter, bigoted, xenophobes because it played better to his audience.

As much as 30% of Obama’s primary, and caucus votes are Republicans trying to choose the weakest democratic candidate for McCain to run against. These Republicans have been gaming the caucuses where it is easier to vote cheat. This is why Obama has not been able to win the BIG! states primaries. Even with Republican vote cheating help.
Hillary Clinton has been OUT MANNED! OUT GUNNED! and OUT SPENT! 4 and 5 to 1. Yet Obama has only been able to manage a very tenuous, and questionable tie with Hillary Clinton.
If Obama is the democratic nominee for the national election in November he will be slaughtered. Because the Republican vote cheating help will suddenly evaporate. I pray that none of you ever mis-speak as all of the candidates have done, and if you do, I hope for you that your families and friends are far more understanding than you have shown here. By the way, “Holly”, although I agree with you that Sen. Obama is not a “savior” I don’t see very Christian-like words in your statement that someone who disagrees with your views must need mental help. One more thing, folks - SPELL CHECK. I believe Obama knew exactly what he was saying and meant exactly what he said. You must remember he was in a closed fund raiser and didn’t think it was being taped, thus the bad quality of the tape. He says what the people he’s talking to want to hear. He was trying to get the big bucks from these people so he was saying what they believe to be true. You can see right through him. He is an empty suit, but will certainly do harm to our country if he is elected. I agree he is what the Bible tells us to watch out for. I thought he was especially cruel and sarcastic when he was mocking Senator Clinton about gun control. I agree with her that people should be allowed to have guns, but not assault weapons and they most certainly should be registered. There are thousands of crimes solved each year because the gun can be traced to a certian individual. It only makes sense that we would be able to trace the owners if a crime is committed. I grew up in the country and my family always had guns, my brothers and father were all hunters. I never learned to shoot because I wasn’t interested and have never felt the need to have one in my home, but I don’t have a problem with someone who does.

I caught that cruelness too. His true colors are coming out. With each sarcastic comment that he makes he is providing us with a window to his soul and it doesn’t look good. One of the benefits of seeing Obama and Hillary attacking each other’s statements is the manner in which they respond defensively and offensively.
It reveals how they would handle a pressurous situation - potentially with contentious foreign leaders.
What they say, and how they say it, is absolutely critical in those situations.
Obama’s bittergate comment went from defending it, to allegedly clarifying it, to apogolizing -but not really, to stating that other people “tried to” misinterpret it.
But, the underlying tone of his defense is that everybody else is wrong, not him.
He even took it to a personal level with the Annie Oakley comment.
He uses a shoot from the hip, street-talk demeanor in situations that calls for formality and seriousness.
And he wants to talk to Iran? Russia? North Korea? China?
How prone is he to saying exactly the wrong thing at the wrong time, in pressurous situations?
And, how many versions would we get on exactly what was “said” behind closed doors of critical meetings abroad,
and how many versions would we get about what was “meant”?
Rev. Wright. Another case where everyone offended by Wright’s words and Obama’s affiliation, is wrong.
We’re all wrong, and he’s right.
Hillary, attacked Obama’s bittergate comments. But notice she attacked the comment and what it represented,
not the man himself, And even went so far as to say he was a good man on CNN, as a preface to criticizing
his remarks and what they meant. In a pressurous situation, she kept the conflict in the arena of concepts and
ideas, instead of making her own Annie Oakley style personal attack against Obama. The way that was handled was a key indicator
of how she can handle the international scene at critical times. Presidential.
Hillary, on the Bosnia comment. She said she made a mistake, made fun of herself over it, and let it go.
J. F. Kennedy-esque. She didn’t keep recycling what she meant, trying to make everyone else wrong, and personally
insulting them and a big block of voters along the way. Presidential again.
This campaign is a job interview process. It is also a type of boot camp,
and Obama is failing miserably.
