Obama to Clinton: “Shame On Her!”

Barack Obama lashed out at his rivals in alternately outraged and bemused remarks to steel workers in Steelton today — calling Hillary Clinton and John McCain out of touch if they think Pennsylvania voters aren’t bitter about the economy.

“I expected this out of John McCain. But I’ve got to say, I’m a little disappointed when I start hearing the exact same talking points coming out of my Democratic colleague Hillary Clinton,” he said. “She knows better. Shame on her!”

Clinton called Obama’s claim that embittered, economically depressed Pennsylvania voters cling to God and guns “elitist” and “demeaning,” attempting to display her common touch with stories of duck hunting and shooting with her father. Obama sounded skeptical.

“She’s running around talking about how this is an insult to sportsmen. How she values the second amendment. She’s talking like she’s Annie Oakley,” he said mockingly. “Hillary Clinton’s out there like she’s out in a duck blind every Sunday. She’s packing a six shooter.”

Smiling, Obama said “Come on. She knows better.”

“That’s some politics being played by Hillary Clinton,” he said, joking “I want to see that picture of her out in the duck blind.”

Obama seemed to be backing off his “bitter” remarks yesterday, saying he’d chosen his words poorly and that he “deeply regrets” if anyone was offended. Today, he reiterated that regret, but struck a far more aggressive tone toward his Democratic opponent in what he called the political “dust-up.”

“This is the same person who has taken more money from lobbyists than any other candidate, Democratic or Republican… the same person who took money from financial folks on Wall Street, and then voted for a bankruptcy bill that makes it harder for folks right here in Pennsylvania to get a fair shake… the same person who spent a decade with her husband campaigning for NAFTA, and now goes around saying how she was opposed to Nafta,” he said.

“This is the same person who says she’s voting for the Colombia trade deal. Turns out that her top adviser, her top strategist was working for the Colombian government to get the bill passed! Does that sound like she’s in touch with you?”

UPDATE: The Clinton campaign’s Phil Singer responds, saying “For months, Barack Obama and his campaign have relentlessly attacked Hillary Clinton’s character and integrity by using Republican talking points from the 1990s. The shame is his.”

“Sen. Clinton does know better — she knows better than to condescend and talk down to voters like Senator Obama did,” he said, adding that “Senator Obama’s outburst won’t change the fact that he has embraced his characterization of the millions of Americans who live in small towns.”

Obama’s point was that people that don’t believe politicians are ever honest are going to vote on a few issues– they take for granted that the Bushes and the Clintons of the world will always say one thing but take money for doing another. Hillary has to scream about that, and hope no one notices that Obama doesn’t take money from lobbyists, and that he opposed the Illinois nuclear industry on Yucca mountain and opposed Rezko’s plans to get casino licenses. He stood up to special interests all his political life, while the Clinton’s collected $800,000 to promote trade deals she claims to oppose. No wonder we still haven’t seen this year’s tax returns. So Clinton is left screaming accusations and hoping no one notices that the Great and Powerful Oz behind the curtain is far less than she once seemed.

Hillary Clinton: Much ado about nothing. How can you call Obama elitist when you make 103 million dollars in 9 years? How can you say you are against free trade agreements and your main campaign person AND your husband are being PAID by the Colombian govt. to facilitate the passing of a free trade agreement? You are such a hypocrite. American needs change, but this change isn’t you. You are more of the same corrupt politics we have known for decades.

I would like to know why every time Obama makes statements that are questioned, we have hundreds of bloggers who support him write novels explaining what he really meant. I call them worms. What Obama Really Meant Statements. I continually laugh at the excuses, I spit at the vile venomn that they use when they are too uneducated to debate with civility. Most of these supporters make me worried about what type of country we will really have when there “True One” leads us off a cliff!

Obama includes religion, along with guns, xenophobia, and bigotry as things that small town people cling to because they are bitter at their economic disadvantage.

He says this in private to wealthy San Fransisco donors, who probably feel the same way and did not consider it controversial.

His attempt to “unsay” it and claim that what he meant to say was some construct he obviously wished he had said was laughable.

There was nothing unclear about his original statement on April 6. He thinks religion is an anachronism that will disappear with prosperity.

While his supporters may “cling” to the hope that this will blow over, Obama is toast.

Americans will rightfully not elect a secular humanist or atheist as president.

Let the voters of PA make the decision and vote for whom they think is best for America. Hopefully people can see what is best for America will be best for them, too. For anyone who thinks either of these politicians is without their faults, you’re ignorant. Let people look at facts, and make informed decisions - not listen to people try and spin media coverage.

It’s sad that adults sit and call each other names in support of candidates. But bound to happen with today’s society incapable of making their own decisions and forming their OWN opinions, I suppose.

Comment by WylieD

“…. they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”

It’s not the word “bitter” that’s making trouble for Obama, it’s the words that come afterwards. This, plus the fact that he delivered his amateur psychobabble about the working class to a crowd of wealthy, San Francisco liberals, behind closed doors, where he thought others wouldn’t hear.

I finally found out where all of you are hiding! I read this article thinking, wow! Some of the most basic principals of reporting are to use the least suggestive language possible. Whoever wrote this article would have been flunked in any journalism class. But its obvious why it continues. If it isn’t obvious yet, read your remarks. Disliking a politician is one thing, but supporting bad journalism so you can have a forum to bash “those dang liberals” for admitting that middle America is bitter.

Let me guess, all this “lashing out” the reporter describes doesn’t make you just want to punch Obama? What is that jerk doing, recognizing the fact that building a wall between two countries might just represent some kind of animosity that, during WWII and the huge number of higher-waged jobs, was not present! Yes, that is it! When all Americans had high-paying wartime jobs, they actually begged Mexicans to come over. Now we have people screaming about a “great wall of America.” If you think Obama is out of touch by claiming the middle class is bitter, you are either supremely stupid, ignorant, or just in plain denial.

I really don’t like Hillary. I think she’s a criminal who should probably be in jail (if she were an average citizen she would be). But I would vote for her in a heartbeat before I’d vote for Obama.

I am not a racist. I don’t care if he’s black, white, Arab American, or purple with pink polkadots. He is a divider, and I sincerely question his patriotism to our country…he has way too many questionable associations.

He is way to far left leaning for this gun toting white woman. He is condescending. I think he got a little too high on his horse with everyone following him around like he’s the Pied Piper and now his true self is coming out because he’s let his guard down. He knows he gets a get out of jail free card by the press every time something even remotely suspicious or controversial comes out about him.

He will never win in a general election, especially if he keeps walking around making bone head comments like this that DO offend us typical white people, and continues to have ties to folks like the Rev. Wright, William Ayers, Tony Rezko, etc., etc.

Obama needs to go away now.

If someone created a website which allowed us to vote on one simple question, ‘are we bitter about how things have been going here in the United States’, do you think the happy campers would ‘win’ or do you think the Americans who are fed up, been pushed down, passed over and trickled on would outnumber those who prefer to wear blinders?

For Hillary to try to twist this comment is beyond her normal campaign games, it’s an act of desperation. When more google for information on her pastor and spritual advisor, Doug Coe, they may come to realize it is all a game to her. When they google through all the campaign lies alone, whether it’s bullets flying, joining the Marines or simply her stands on issues, they will realize we’ll be the losers in these games.

If you want to discuss someone out of touch or elitist, think about the string of unpaid bills Clinton has left in every state she’s been in, bills owed to small vendors. Consider why one would fork out $26,000 for an orchestra for a fundraiser yet not pay her workers’ health insurance premiums for two months.

And btw, we were fooled by a beer drinking party guy trying to act like the common man before, look where it got us. And if using that campaign game is not elitist, I’ll eat my hat.

I was wondering why everyone was so anti-Obama that was writing comments, until I saw the website. Fox news! No wonder. I had the misfortune of being stuck in a hotel, where that was the only news I could find for four days. Geez, I can’t believe they are allowed to be called a news station!! Does the Republican party OWN this station? They might as well. It is a good thing for John McCain that the station is there to give him free publicity every day, while slamming the Democratic choices, since he is so poor at raising money, he wouldn’t be doing very well without Fox News to feed their propaganda to all of you hate filled, right wing conservatives who don’t listen to anyone, unless they are screaming “Conservative! Conservative! Conservative!!”
Hillary is a liar, and completely out of touch with the American people. McCain mispeaks, Hilary mispeaks, sometimes, but not nearly as often, Obama misspeaks, they are ALL human, and it is really too bad, that because you don’t like his name, and probably not his color that you spread your hate filled filth into cyberspace for the rest of us to have to endure. I would really like to see the America our forefathers envisioned, where people truly were allowed to think and say what they wanted, without other people hating them for that. I guess conservatives just won’t ever get that far, you are all too filled with hate to tolerate people who are willing to let others live as they would like to without judging them.

Obama’s lies continue to boil to the surface each and everyday. In my humble opinion, Obama is doing to the reputation of Harvard University as Kennedy Jr did for Brown University……in other words; both are embarrassments to whatever University granted these guys a degree. Further, Obama holds a license to practice law in one of the states. An attorney needs to be held to a higher professional standard in order to maintain their license as an attorney and as such, the attorney shall comply with and be subject to all rules governing the practice of law by attorneys and the attorney shall do nothing which, if done by an individual attorney would violate the standards of professional conduct applicable to attorneys licensed to practice law in a State. Any violation of this rule by the attorney shall be grounds for the Bar Association to terminate or suspend the Attorney’s right to practice law or otherwise to discipline him. Not only should Obama be sanctioned by his State bar Association for lies and the lack of professional conduct, he should recuse himself from his Senate seat and Harvard University should publish a public statement which states that Obama in no way represents the conduct and professionalism of the University.

LET’S GET BACK TO THE REAL ISSUES

Obama is perfectly right. It is Hillary who is lying all the time, making false claims. Actually she is out of touch to small town americans. She has made 109 million with Bill in 6 yrs and has spent her last 25 yrs in white house and high profile life. She is ellitist and out of touch.

Obama, a middle class working kansas mother and kenyan father son grew up small towns in hawaii, indonesia. Once his mother died in his early days, he is being grown up with his grand-parents in kansas, who were blue color workers in a local factory in kansas. Obama has grown up from the childhood with all the working class people. Besides that, he has worked in south side of chicago as community organizer to help people in poverty. Obama is in touch with small town peoples. It is the Hillary who is out of touch.

Go obama go.

What a laugh. Hillary Clinton is now portraying herself as a gun lover and HUNTER? Mis-speaking again?? Whatever it takes, she will say it. She is well known for backing and pushing gun control.

Sample headline from the past:

Stepping up the Clinton Administration’s campaign against gun violence, Hillary Rodham Clinton used an emotional White House ceremony today to call on Americans to press Congress to ”buck the gun lobby” and pass several gun control measures.

Comment by Bing VanGorden

I think the ones bitter here are Clinton supporters. First, nothing Obama said was elitist in the least bit. It was an honest and frank assessment that happens to be accurate. If you find the comments to be offensive, you’re the elitist. There was nothing derogatory or belittling in Obama’s remarks. Second, Obama’s point is well taken, that we’d expect this kind of petty attack from the Republicans. This is just more damage to the Clinton legacy and our party. And third, Obama gave up some 6 years of tax returns PMOE. Fourth, if you’re a Democrat, it’s time to get behind the nominee, let go of Hillary’s shameful political attacks, we need to win the White House in November.

Comment by Emily

When I read these comments I conclude that Obama is exactly right. There are many bitter people out there who have been manipulated for years and years to the point where they spout nonsense and don’t even realize it. Senator Obama spoke truth-something Clinton and McSame aren’t in touch with!

Comment by IntegrityMatters

Hillary has integrity issues. Obama is new and different. McCain is still trying to win the Vietnam war. None of them are talking about the real war on terror, which is a financial war. The jihadist’s are trying to win financially not militarily.

“Tom” - so what you are saying is that because Hillary lies, this wipes out Obama’s lies?

So Tom, I am curious to hear what standard and/or criteria you use in order to determine who’s lies are better lies or what lies are worse or better than the other candidates lies? Then tell me what justification you use to determine what candidate of these two you are going to vote for once you face the truth that both have been caught up in lies?

Unfortunately Tom, you are left with two liars and no argument you have, or hope you have for your candidate is going to change the fact that you are working with two very good liars.

Now I am curious Tom, were your parents both Democrats and is this why you feel compelled to vote for a Democrat?

The U.S. Senate voted 55-45 against conviction for perjury and 50-50 against obstruction of justice. It would have taken 67 votes to convict Clinton and to expel him from office.
The perjury charge stemmed from the allegation that Clinton lied to a federal grand jury about his affair with the former White House intern Monica Lewinsky. The other charge was that Clinton obstructed justice in a bid to hide his relationship with Lewinsky.
The public expected that most of the 45 Democrats would stand by Clinton in the case.
But 10 Republicans surprised the public by joining Democrats on the vote against conviction on the perjury charge. Five of those 10 Republicans again voted with Democrats against conviction on the obstruction of justice charge.
U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist declared after the vote: “It is therefore ordered and adjudged that the said William Jefferson Clinton be and he hereby is acquitted of the charges in the said articles.”
Most Americans were pleased with the Senate vote not to remove President Clinton from office.
******************************************************************************

He was acquitted and not removed from office. He was, however, still impeached.

Once again, we are forced to choose from 3 Politicians, who don’t necessarily have the heartbeat of the “people” within their heart. If they did, it seems to me, that we would be more inspired.

I remember a book that I read in the 60’s…the book itelf was ok, but the title said/says it for me: “Been down so long, it looks like up!”

Practically anything will be better than Bush, but will there be any great change at all?

I wonder.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is out of touch. Sen. McCain is out of touch with most of the soldiers I know (who are referred to as bullet catchers by the elitist Navy sailors and Air Force pilots). The varying degrees to which there out of touch is up to everybody to judge for themselves. I know that I was shocked to find out that these 2 PRESIDENTIAL candidates who have been on the campaign trail for so long; and that have so many years of experience in Washington. Don’t know that a large amount (some even say 80% of Americans polled are dissatisfied) of Americans are bitter. With all the important looking news clips of them at hospitals and poor people’s homes; and the pictures of them with concern etched on their face in some living room or picket line. I couldn’t believe that neither one of them knew that there were God fearing, red blooded, patriotic, Americans who are bitter. I’m sure once they get wind of all these comments and see the error of they’re ways there’s going to be some quick backtracking. In the mean time I want to add my voice to this conversation about this latest “Bitter Controversy”.
Because I’m bitter; after Two 15 and 16 month tours to the sandbox and less than 6 months together with my wife in the last 2 years… Yes I’m bitter; but I’m not the only one. I see and run into bitter people all the time. Much more frequently than I run into happy go lucky optimistic satisfied people. To clarify my statement though I would like to add. Some of the bitter people I run into are very funny, well behaved, well spoken, law abiding, respectful citizens. Being bitter doesn’t mean they are violent, disgruntled, hateful, or walking around permanently angry. People are just bitter, with these high gas prices and the economy only getting worse and worse. Former New Orleans Louisiana Citizens are bitter with a federal government that seemingly left its own citizens to fend for themselves: in one of the worst natural disasters since the big quake in San Francisco. Every American citizen is bitter from living with an antiquated immigration policy that’s broken and that seems like the government is just playing politics with. People are bitter with racial tensions seemingly worse now than they were in the 90’s, 80’s, or even the 70’s. The rest of the free world is bitter and disenchanted with us as World Leaders. The Euro is sometimes twice the value of a dollar: so a 4 Euro pack of cigarettes cost $8 American dollars. The ridiculous hundreds of billions of dollars in debt we are in to communist China should make any red blooded American bitter. While were steadily outsourcing jobs and in trade agreements with countries that could care less about our people or our families being out of work or struggling; I have family that’s in Akron and Dayton Ohio out of work getting old, bitter. Broken borders… The Democratic Party should be bitter that the Clintons again seemingly (with scandal after scandal) left the door wide open for Al Gore (A Nobel Prize winner) to crash and burn and go down in flames. It is in my opinion that its partially because of them that the Country wound up in the hands of the Republicans who have lead us into this disaster. I still love my country but I’m definitely bitter and upset with the last 2 administrations that I grew up in that have let things come to this.

I believe in the second amendment. I believe Sen. Obama believes in the Second Amendment and the right of Americans to be able to bear arms. He has been one of the Amendments fiercest defenders. I was baptized and have attended Christian School almost all of my life. My faith didn’t come out of bitterness but I know that Jesus message has always been to bring hope to the downtrodden and downcast. What the Senator said is correct. We as Christians cast off our burdens and sorrows in Christ and in church where we believe we are uplifted by his Holy Spirit.. One of the reasons we fellowship in the Lord is because they’re are bad governments. From the Pharaohs to Pontius Pilate they’re have been administrations that have made the people bitter. When times are tough people look to they’re faith for refuge Read Exodus, Psalms, Thessalonians, Corinthians, the New Testament… All those letters to the Churches after (the) Acts of the Apostles or Disciples were pretty much about staying strong in the faith through desperate times. I respect Sen. Obama more than ever for standing up and actually telling the truth. To say that most Americans are happy and optimistic like little children is out of touch. When times are good people aren’t worried so much about crime or guns. When times are good and people are happy and truly optimistic we don’t have so many people using drugs like Crystal Meth… People are happy when they have good jobs that they’re confident they’re going to have the next year. When they’re’ not worried about loosing they’re home or worried about how they’re going to afford gas and still be able to save for they’re children’s education and they’re senior years… No government has ever been perfect, or utopian, but is it unrealistic to just want a President who will help the people instead of the lobbyist and big Bear Stearns?

I believe that out of the three viable candidates that we have left, that Sen. Obama is the one who is the most in touch and connected to us. He didn’t grow up in a wealthy Illinois Republican dynasty, or in some very wealthy Military family that could give him access to the elitist Navy Pilot School. That doesn’t except the children of the common American family. Sen. Obama wasn’t some fancy Navy fly boy… He would’ve been one of us (or like me a Grunt).
Then Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has some nerve; when she doesn’t even realize how out of touch she is. Look how she sounds in her new commercials being run in Pennsylvania: where she talks about her family summers at “The Cottage”. It’s like she doesn’t get the difference or really care that most common people don’t have summers at “The Fabulous Cottage“ that looks like a mansion or some manor… or the White House. She’s completely out of touch. Most of the people I know spent summers on the porch or at they’re friend’s house; with a 2 or 3 day trip somewhere like Disneyland or the beach or some place. I can’t even imagine a whole summer of my whole family not working and being able to hang out at some gated Mansion with butlers and maids. You can see in the commercial the place was humongous. The fabulous Hiltons and Mrs. Rodham Clinton may be used to summers like this at “The Cottage”; but what is this the Simple Life or the Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous? The Hills or Richie Rich?
Sen. Obama grew up with a single Mother and from his childhood pictures (looked Happy and Loved on the beach with his Grandparents) with his Mom doing the best she could; but he had to make it on his own. Like the most of us he had to make it by using his own wits and drive; without the rich connections or a Father that is the Admiral of the Pacific Fleet of the Navy. He didn’t even have the brand new convertible Corvette Stingray like Sen. McCain. He didn’t have the trust fund; like most of the rest of us he had to work and pray hard for everything. The President of the Harvard Law Review, a self made yet very intellectual Senator that really seems to still be one of us. That hasn’t completely forgotten what it‘s really like to be one of the ‘have not’s’. Neither One of the other two candidates has ever even experienced an average or lower middle class lifestyle. They have all led fantastic lives and achieved and done amazing things. They have all had to overcome. The difference is 2 of them are completely out of touch with the common American or the average tax payer/voter. Senators McCain and the distinguished Mrs. Hillary Rodham Clinton are completely out of touch with the people, with the small hands that turn the wheels…They can read about being poor, or some older politician’s thoughts on abortion, and being frightened and out of work or being a young single mother… They can visit the barrio and the poor and be gracious enough to listen to you and me gripe; but they have never known a day of not being monetarily rich or financially set for life or even of having an immediate family member that wasn’t rich. Bill Clinton seems to me to be as close as Hillary will ever get to having someone who may have been poor in her family. Sen. Obama or Barry knows what it means to really have a debt or college loans that have to be paid back that you can‘t afford.
The rich kids like the Kennedy’s’ like him and have endorsed him. Stars like Oprah, George Clooney, George Lucas, and even Rolling Stone magazine believe in him and support him… So the wealthy and well to do should know that he’s’ not out to get them or that he wouldn’t just forget about them either. He’s just of and for the people and he’s honest with us because he knows people are intelligent enough to handle it.
You don’t have to sugar coat things or try to trick or politic us into liking you. I can’t afford a new set of Nomax gloves to take to the field with me. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton telling me that I’m happy and optimistic isn’t going to get those gloves or make them magically appear.

I believe that Sen. Obama is really special. Like Governor Richardson said he’s the type of Politician that (if we’re lucky) we get, or that comes around once in a lifetime. I think this last much a do about nothing, is the result of panic and jealousy that the cats out of the bag and the other politicians are really looking bad. To anyone calling him out of touch for overtly being OBVIOUSLY in touch; it’s definitely just a jealous and desperate, frightened reaction. The words he said behind those closed doors in Marin weren’t scandalous or out of touch. The response from McCain and Hillary Rodham Clinton has been… It’s easy to see. People are at the gas pumps bitter, Protesting the War bitter, (Pink against the War or whatever…) Michael Moore and Sicko and the environmentalist are bitter… The problem with Immigration on both sides of the border is bitter the Minutemen are bitter. Out of Work people are bitter and mad at the way there jobs have been outsourced and that Nike is building a brand new 2.3 billion dollar factory in Vietnam. Dell and America Online etc… are spending millions building buildings and business in India spending millions training people in India. People are bringing guns to school and shooting everybody and killing themselves, bitter. They’re not optimistic. They say that there were officially One Hundred and something suicides in the Army last year; but I can almost guarantee that there were more than that, that the Army won’t classify as a suicide. In every unit there putting Soldiers on Suicide watch taking the bolts out of their weapons they’re boot laces and belts. When people are happy and optimistic they don’t have to give up their educations and dreams to join the Army to defend their country and families.

I am a little bitter but I do love my country and I BELIEVE in Sen. Barack Obama for President in 08.

Thank You.

you people are and will not ever vote outside your narrow minds, and it will not matter anyway. you are losing and will lose and you already know it but will not accept it. i find i very funny and i laugh at you’all everyday sad but very funny

I am close-minded.

Never liked politics of distraction and press choosing a candidate for me.

Obama is a charismatic leader with one of the best vision. He has variety of experience, and he would be the best shot to foster relationship with muslim countries. Muslims can trust Obama than anybody else running for the president. I hope he will win the presidency and reach out to muslim worlds, which have been suffered from the American White (Christian) Arrogance for some time! Obama 08!

Pamela,

What it amounted of was a witch hunt by the republicans. Who I might say has really shown

themselves to be soooo holy.

President Clinton left office with almost a 70% approval rating by the American people.

I guess we had the last word

People its time to start stocking up on your guns, weapons, and whatever amo you can. When Obama becomes president we will need our guns to defend ourselves from the terrorist groups. The terrorists groups are waiting for their muslim guy to take office so they can start getting their visas to enter our country and start destroying it. There are too many idiots out there thinking that Obama is for change…but little do they know that, that change is to try and brain wash us all from our right to bare arms so we can be targets. The Obama’s are not for the American people but for their own kind and faith type. I am building my armory and will be ready….

Did anyone see the picture of Hillary belting down wiskey in Indiana. I don’t think I want my Grandkids to see her in action nor to answer the phone at 3:00 Am Now why, I ask as a Grandmother, isn’t anyone addressing this alcohol problem?? The Clinton Campaing has everyone where they want them: spinning to their spin. If that was McCain, they would be all over him
————————–

maybe if obama was an alcoholic he would be able to answer a question without st-stut-stuttering… but then again there are his prewritten speeches that make people wanna take a couple shots
