The media’s focus on the “bitter” comment is a deflection and distraction. The problem with Obama’s comments was the insinuation that small town working-class people are not capable of understanding their economic problems, so they turn to guns, religion, racism, xenophobia, etc. That is the offensive part of his speech and needs to be the narrative on this issue.

I think Senator Obama is spot-on with his comments!
I’m from a small town in Ohio where my father, after working for 30 years (sometimes 2 jobs) to raise his family is now unemployed because his job, along with 200 others, was out-sourced to China. What’s he supposed to do at age 52 with a history of medical problems and no job or medical benefits? - Obama is right, it creates extreme bitterness toward the government allowing (encouraging) this to happen through obscene trade agreements and support for businesses who choose profit over American survival.
I recently retired from the military because I was up for another 1 year deployment to Afghanistan and my 3rd child would have been born half way through. I already have 2 children that have endured years without their father due to military commitments - so he’s right again, there are many in the military that barely have time with their children due to the current operations tempo. Don’t misunderstand me, it was my privilege and honor to serve my country and I respect and admire every US Military member for their courage and sacrifice!
I’ve been a lifelong Republican but lately it seems Senator Obama is the one who’s listening to the American people.

I have been on the fence for a while, yet Hillary will most likely get my vote. Obama’s comments hit the nail on th head. I may still vote for McCain becasue of the tax cuts, but Obama knows what is going on, but everyone hates the truth. I grew up in Somerset PA and know that people can’t make it economically so they become obsessed with religion, while being the biggest racists. Okay, so PA is doing fine according to Hilary. However, there are lots of “bitter” (unhappy, depressed) people in small and large town America who have lost their jobs, their homes and their stable way of life. I know those people. They are in my family. And as the bible demonstrates over and over, when Christians are going through hard times, they draw closer to God and his comfort. Is that a problem? No, however, people also draw closer to other things and become less tolerant of others. Even if you are a Republican, you have to want to see a battle between Clinton and McCain, not because of a hatred of Hillary, but because she has demonstrated her worth as a publc servant that deserves to be in that campaign battle against McCain. How can this be when gas is up, people are losing homes, and just this past week a large construction company in rural Penn. is moving its location to Mexico. If I were in that town, I’d be BITTER, no hold up, I’d be PISSED OFF! How can we let the media dictate to us how we should feel. Don’t give me that crap. I think many people that still believe in the old American values are trying desperately to hold fast to anything that isn’t nailed down. America must come to terms with the ugliness and realize that people are not as resilient as they find them to be. I like McCain, I do and I’m an independant, but Barack Obama can do something special for this country. Hillary is trying her hardest and I would be so saddened to see her get the nomination, because she represents the same old politics. I’m just fortunate that I see the media and the right wing contributors for what they are. These people are nothing more than co-conspirators in trying to build up Hillary Clinton so she can ultimately lose to McCain. If Obama gets the nomination, it’s a forgone conclusion he’ll win the election.

I feel far more threatened by what Senator Obama’s statements will bring upon America if he is elected President. He may be able to continually “explain” himself to get out of hot water while campaigning, but how will our country fare if he is elected President and makes statements “that he should of, could of made better” to powerful world leaders? God help us.

Obama’s comments may be closer to the truth that we want to imagine. Small town America is becoming increasingly frustrated and bitter, because the conditions that allowed them to sustain themselves in those areas are rapidly disappearing, and they are finding themselves increasingly moving back to the urban areas they or their parents abandoned. This frustration is manifesting itself in anti-immigration rhetoric, faux patriotism, increasingly violent entertainment, and of course, the gun culture…their last perceived domain of personal power. Cooperate America declared war against small town America with franchises and superstores, bought farmland and converted it into real estate developments, and sheltered their profits in off-shore banks and shell corporations. They took everything, and gave little back, bolstered by their elected puppets who cranked out laws supporting corporate agendas, while Ma and Pa Kettle were watching NASCAR and blaming minorities for everything wrong in America. As Malcolm X and Rev. Wright said, now all of the chickens are coming home to roost.

I urge everone to vote John McCain. He cares about the middle class so much that he will keep Bush’s tax cuts for the rich. McCain and Hilary have way more money than Obama, that’s why I like them more.

We used to be a country where you could speak your mind, deals were done on a hand shake, and a person’s word was their bond. Now it seems we’re just a bunch of gutless, spineless, yellowback airheads. I won’t believe a word from Hillary Clinton. Don’t you all see what she’s doing. I’m an independant as well.
