Obama Camp Defends Fundraiser Remarks — But Just The Uncontroversial Ones
His rivals wasted no time in attacking Barack Obama for comments made at a San Francisco fundraiser last weekend, and newly reported on the Huffington Post, in which he seemed to disparage working class people in Pennsylvania and across the Midwest — as Hillary Clinton and John McCain’s campaign both called Obama “out of touch” just minutes after the remarks came to light.
Talking about small rust belt towns that are still run down despite promises of renewal from Bush and Clinton administrations, Obama told the crowd “it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to the people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
But in a statement, the Obama campaign ignored the controversial portion of his remarks about God, Guns, and Xenophobia — defending instead his widely accepted claim that people in the rust belt have had it pretty rough for the last few decades. Spokesman Tommy Vietor released a statement saying “Senator Obama has said many times in this campaign that Americans are understandably upset with their leaders in Washington for saying anything to win elections while failing to stand up to the special interests and fight for an economic agenda that will bring jobs and opportunity back to struggling communities.”
Vietor ignored Clinton’s attacks altogether, but lashed out at John McCain’s campaign for calling Obama out of touch — saying “if John McCain wants a debate about who’s out of touch with the American people, we can start by talking about the tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans that he once said offended his conscience but now wants to make permanent.”
Of course, when McCain senior adviser Steve Schmidt said Obama’s remarks showed “an elitism and condescension towards hardworking Americans that is nothing short of breathtaking,” he was talking about the ones that the campaign’s statement ignored.
UPDATE: The Obama campaign urges reporters to look at the remarks in context. You can read the transcript provided by the Huffington Post after the jump.
OBAMA: So, it depends on where you are, but I think it’s fair to say that the places where we are going to have to do the most work are the places where people are most cynical about government. The people are mis-appre…they’re misunderstanding why the demographics in our, in this contest have broken out as they are. Because everybody just ascribes it to ‘white working-class don’t wanna work — don’t wanna vote for the black guy.’ That’s…there were intimations of that in an article in the Sunday New York Times today - kind of implies that it’s sort of a race thing.
Here’s how it is: in a lot of these communities in big industrial states like Ohio and Pennsylvania, people have been beaten down so long. They feel so betrayed by government that when they hear a pitch that is premised on not being cynical about government, then a part of them just doesn’t buy it. And when it’s delivered by — it’s true that when it’s delivered by a 46-year-old black man named Barack Obama, then that adds another layer of skepticism.
But — so the questions you’re most likely to get about me, ‘Well, what is this guy going to do for me? What is the concrete thing?’ What they wanna hear is — so, we’ll give you talking points about what we’re proposing — to close tax loopholes, you know, roll back the tax cuts for the top 1 percent. Obama’s gonna give tax breaks to middle-class folks and we’re gonna provide health care for every American.
But the truth is, is that, our challenge is to get people persuaded that we can make progress when there’s not evidence of that in their daily lives. You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.
Um, now these are in some communities, you know. I think what you’ll find is, is that people of every background — there are gonna be a mix of people, you can go in the toughest neighborhoods, you know working-class lunch-pail folks, you’ll find Obama enthusiasts. And you can go into places where you think I’d be very strong and people will just be skeptical. The important thing is that you show up and you’re doing what you’re doing.

My obsession rages on…
Throughout this election, it has become my obsession to say as many negative things about Mike Huckabee as my imagination can come up with. My vehement hatred for the man all stems from one question that he casually posed to a NY Times reporter (who claimed to know a lot about Mormonism) about whether or not Mormons believe that Jesus and Lucifer were brothers. As a Mormon, I do believe that Jesus and Lucifer were brothers. However, my bishop (at the ward I attend) instructs us to conceal such ‘deeper doctrines’ because people outside of the LDS Church just don’t understand such truths, and their unwillingness to accept them only jeopardizes our attempts to market ourselves as a Christian religion. In any event, I will go on hating Huckabee for a million eternities, because I am so insecure in my own faith that I have no other choice but to hate him with a demonic passion. Instead, as a temple-worthy Mormon (complete with magic underpants), I support wholeheartedly and without reservation my fellow cult member, Mitt Romney. If only he were elected President (or at least Vice President) then maybe my false religion would gain some credibility and people would no longer think us as a cult. Of course, you bozos in Eldorado, Texas are complicating matters greatly by actually following the teachings of our founder/prophet, Joseph Smith. Us mainline Mormons are smart enough to hide the less attractive aspects of our religion (such as polygamy, our aspirations to godhood, secret temple ceremonies including the handshake that gets you into heaven, magic underwear, etc.) instead of flaunting them like this splinter group of Mormons in Texas.
All Mormons (and others of equally deficient IQs), I would encourage you to follow my lead…
Say it with me…
HUCAKBEE IS THE DEVIL; ROMNEY IS GOD…HUCAKBEE IS THE DEVIL; ROMNEY IS GOD…HUCAKBEE IS THE DEVIL; ROMNEY IS GOD…HUCAKBEE IS THE DEVIL; ROMNEY IS GOD…HUCAKBEE IS THE DEVIL; ROMNEY IS GOD…HUCAKBEE IS THE DEVIL; ROMNEY IS GOD…
The more often you repeat this mantra (as is the case when you bear your testimony as a Mormon), the more convinced you will become of its truthfulness. Say it a few times and see if, you too, do not get a burning feeling in your bosom to verify its validity.
[...] UPDATE: FNC’s Aaron Bruns reports the first Obama campaign semi-response: “Senator Obama has said many times in this campaign that Americans are understandably upset with their leaders in Washington for saying anything to win elections while failing to stand up to the special interests and fight for an economic agenda that will bring jobs and opportunity back to struggling communities. And if John McCain wants a debate about who’s out of touch with the American people, we can start by talking about the tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans that he once said offended his conscience but now wants to make permanent,” Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor said. [...]
Once again Obama is trying to cover his ASS and the flock will believe him and walk off the cliff.
Obama has shown me the light when Reverend Wright spouts anti American rhetoric it is because of mistreatment in past so it is justified but the people who have lost their jobs and had hardships for 25 years they are bitter. Thank you for the illumination great uniter.

They want you to find fault with the most qualified candidate for president. They want you to show disrespect for a woman who has fought her whole life for all Americans- men, women, kids, whites& all minorities. Don’t be fooled by insignificant negative media press on Hillary. They want to blow up her negatives and downplay her positives including the endorsement of 2.9 million nurses & 30+ military brass.
Obama doesn’t want a new vote in Michigan or Florida because he knows he would surely lose he’s a shamefull coward just like Obama’s pastor racist Rev Jeremiah Wright. This man is one Of Obama’s hero’s mentors of over 20 years, where Obama brings his kids, shame on him. And shame on any American for supporting him. He’s a fake, hypocrite, dont let the media or CNN fool you. They give Obama bias coverage because they feel sorry for him. And they’re spellbound!!!

It seems like we are always taking things out of context when it comes to Obama. Maybe Obama just says what he really means. The poor white people, they have to turn to religion when things get and become bigots and oh my god they want guns. Watch out American the people out of jobs just might go to church and then go shoot someone. This guy needs to get out of here. What a jerk.

A comment on the April 11, 2008 @ 7:17P.M. blog: Obama the Great Liar
As a registered “Independent”, I was shocked to read that, in the writer’s opinion, disappointed Hillary Clinton supporters would rather vote for McCain than Obama in the General Election. The writer refers to Obama as the Magic Negro! I don’t know where the term ‘Magic Negro” comes from, but as a registered “Independent” I too, will vote for McCain if Obama gets the nomination. I’m surprised that I’m not alone in my negative thoughts about Obama. For the record, please explain to me… what is a ‘Magic Negro”?

…Sweet! Glad I could stimulate meaningful dialogue.
“magic Negro” comes from the fact Obama is not 100 percent black but he claims he’s and the magic part of it is the fact that people still believe that he can bring “change” when flip flops on every issued every time and he never answers a question straight up.

She doesn’t like being called a red neck anymore than a black person likes being called the “N” word. She just went to throw the Obama sign in her front yard away. Guess his grandmother isn’t the only “TYPICAL WHITE PERSON” Obama is going to throw under the bus.
Can you say BLOWN OUT of PROPORTION. Obama was saying that people are mad because the government keeps screwing them. Promises made about jobs and the economy and are NEVER kept. Workers have the right to be mad, bitter, angry. And they should be. Can we get a whitehouse that will STOP lying. Obama’s comments are to disparage the working class it just points out why they are upset, and rightly so. Don’t let the media slant everything for you, read stuff yourself.

Obama’s Dubious Affiliations
There is no way a white man with the same background and credentials as Obama could ever be elected to any office in this country.
Look at Obama’s affiliations:
- Senator Meeks who openly hates whites and gays and is listed on Obama’s campaign website as a major Obama supporter and backer and is one of Obama;s super-delegate. Mr. Meeks has been integral in helping Mr. Obama succeed in politics.
- Larry Sinclair claims in 1999 Senator Obama’s arranged to meet him in a limousine, sold Senator Obama cocaine and then gave Senator Obama oral sex. Subsequently Larry and Obama went to a hotel and preformed oral sex again. Mr. Sinclair is testifying in court under oath that these allegations are true.
- Mr. Auchi is an Iraqi billionaire and major financial sponsor for Obama’s rise to power throughout the past years.
While working with Saddam Hussein, Auchi made his fortune through the selling of arms in Iraq and the funneling of money from the Oil for Food program (no wonder Obama voted against invading Iraq). Mr. Auchi should have been tried along side Saddam Hussein for his crimes against humanity.
- Mr. Wright is a racist who hates America and whites with Hitleresque triads. Mr. Wright has been Mr. Obama’s spiritual mentor for over 20 years. Before the media exposed Mr. Wright, Mr. Wright was on Obama’s campaign staff as Obama’s chief religious advisor. Mr. Wright and Mr. Meeks are ideologically closer to Karl Marx and Black Nationalism, than to Christianity.
- Mr. Rezko is Obama’s long time friend and a major mob figure. Rezko is NOT known for his civic sense of duty and does not do favors without asking something in return.
- Mr. Ayers of the Weather Underground, a group that killed police and tried to bomb the US Capitol, served with Obama on the board of the leftist foundation called the Woods Fund.
- Mr. McPeaks is Obama’s military adviser and national campaign co-chairman who claims that American Jews are the “problem.” and “Christian Zionists were driving America’s policy in Iraq to benefit Israel.”
- Michelle Obama trumpets Obama as “the second coming of the messiah,” and also states that she “has never been proud to be an AMERICAN in her adult life”.
The list goes on…
How can Obama’s bad judgment to choose to affiliate with criminals and fanatics be justified?
Had Hillary Clinton had any of the above ghosts in her closet, she would have been thrown out of the election long ago.
Hey everybody - am I missing something here?
It seems to me that perhaps instead of electing Obama president, it would be easier if we just shot ourselves in our collective foot.

Interesting, that is good to know.
Thank goodness Obama is beginning to show his true self. Speaking about small town people, who he knows little about, in such a disparaging manner, shows he is not a a man who can unite our country, and is unworthy of being President.
Wow… so many of you are so outta touch with reality. What he siad makes sense. I’ve lived in a small town most of my life. People have fallen through the cracks. Where are the jobs, promises, help that so many have promised through so many years. Obama may not be perfect, but he’s the best hope for any change in direction that we have now out of the three.

Sandra, I don’t know about you but I am one of those small town PA people. Yes I go to church regularly and we own guns. Our town is almost a ghost town. How dare you defend his comments and blame the media. He said it I heard it. He is a jerk! He is just another rich politician that doesn’t have a clue about the “typical small town person”. You can believe our small town newspaper will be having lots on this and I will make sure it is daily. Hopefully, the college kids find out what kind of person Obama is before they go to the polls in 2 weeks. I intend to make sure my daughter lets her PSU friends know what he thinks of us. I am not a democrat I am an independent. CNN and others keep trying to make up for what he says. He won’t debate or answer questions, because he isn’t smart enough. He has to have people write everything or else he speaks his mind. And it is showing what happens when he opens his ignorant mouth!

Sandra, I understand your sentiments above. Promises, promises, promises. All politicians lie. That is how they get elected.
I also suspect that BO did not INTEND to disparage the locals.
“And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
However, his words tell an entire chapter about what goes on inside his head.
Why in the world did he decide to include guns, religion and general bigotry? I can see where the trade issue and the illegals taking jobs plays in, but what in the HECK is in his head that he would included the others?
What do guns, racism and religion have to do with lost jobs? I can only speculate as to what is in his head, and I will not go chapter and verse here because it is pure speculation on my part. Suffice it to say that I REALLY DON’T LIKE the way he thinks. I don’t like where his mind takes him. I am terrified of the logic train that resulted in the above statement.

Obama Visits Billionaires Row
San Francisco, April 6, 2008
http://www.zombietime.com/obama_visits_billionaires_row/
On April 6, 2008, Barack Obama visited the San Francisco region, zipping from event to event all day long, from one end of the Bay Area to the other.
What? you might ask. How did I miss that? If only I had known, I would have gone to see him.
Well, there’s a reason you didn’t know about it. Obama didn’t want you to know about it. Because the events he was attending weren’t for people like you.
They were for people with lots and lots of money, who use that money to gain access and influence with politicians — especially politicians who might become president.

These people are religious because it is the core of their beliefs!
Who can blame them for being “anti- ILlegal immigrant”? The key word here is ILLEGAL, who accept wages far below what a normal American can survive on… taking jobs away from them, because big business wants cheap labor so they can inflate their “bottom lines”, for the foreign owners of their corporations!

I don’t get the controversy…Obama is correct PA and rural americans are bitter about jobs going overseas.. which we can thank the clintons for (NAFTA) Government hasn’t been responsive to rural america for decades now and if Obama has better idea bring it on..As for the guns and religion part i don’t see that he said anything disparging about the rural lifestyle.. People do cling to their guns. PA is a hunting state and many people need to hunt just to put food on the table. He was stating an opinion about PA and as far as i can see neither McCain or Clinton have offered anything other than overly optimistic rhetoric that in no way solves the serious problems of rural america or inner city america either!

I am amazed at the gullibility of the American people. Barack Obama has shown, along with his wife, and his minister, that they have no respect for America as a whole. Obama’s comments about small town PA and the rest of the country are insulting, degrading, and the most insulting part was how we cling to our religion? When you are down the first thing people turn to, if they have any sense, is God and their faith. As for our guns, at least we use them for sport in hunting deer, etc. and not to kill our fellow man in the major cities of America. There is a murder almost every day in our closest large cities, and 95% of the murders are considered black on black crime. God help us (and them) if they ever get around to visiting us in “small town America”. Obama is NOT the answer for change in American, the notion of him making major changes in our sacred country gives me chills! Wake Up America!!!!!!
Truth,
Better yet. Maybe he can enlist Wright to teach us how not to hate. Because he is so loving and all that. Typical Obama supporter this Dave S is. So brainwashed by Obama that he will believe anything.
I am not voting for Obama because he is black, I am not voting for Obama because he is LIBERAL.

I won’t bother with the NAFTA arguments. It’s like bailing water with a fork.
Why the controversy? Easy. What kind of twisted logic could inject guns and religion into a simple statement about broken employment promises by previous administrations and politicians?
What sort of internal bias is running around in his head? His statement is like a snapshot of a portion of his mind. I find it very scary that he could pull those associations together like that.
Please, Earl, lead me through this single sentence and make me understand why it is “normal”. I understand the context, but how did he get here:
“And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
Mulu - I think you need to get a hold of yourself. I don’t care what color he is. I don’t care where he came from. I do care what he stands for, and that’s ugly.
Lo and behold a black man is talking about the hardship small town mid-western are facing and all this bigot haters are flocking trying to lynch him as their ancestors did. Why so much hatred and what he said is true and all he is tying to do is to solve it? OHhh you all almighty whitey, how can a black man talk about your blight? ha? You are so full of hypocracy and bitterness.
Mulu’s been inhaling again…Obama ‘the best qualified’? Being a Senator for a couple of years trumps the same position (held by McCain) for a couple of decades? Put the bong down and let your head clear, Mulu.
Andy Have you been on the Fec website lately? It looks like they changed their format.

I guess the truth speaks for itself. The hatred shown in this blog is what Obama is talking about. You all haters, why is so hard for your all to accept the truth? Why do you think you are so bent on not voting for Obama when he is the best qualified one unless it is b/s of your prejudice and bittere
