In the race for the most popular votes in the Democratic Party’s presidential primary contests, Sen. Barack Obama’s lead over Sen. Hillary Clinton is about 711,000 votes — not including Florida or Michigan — according to Real Clear Politics.

Of Sen. Obama’s 711,000 popular-vote lead, 650,000 — or more than 90% of the total margin — comes from Sen. Obama’s home state of Illinois, with 429,000 of that lead coming from his home base of Cook County.

That margin in Cook County represents almost 60% of Obama’s total lead nationwide.

Interestingly, Sen. Obama’s 429,000-vote margin in Cook County alone is larger than the winning margin of either candidate in any state.

So what does that tell us? The only thing I can read into it is, that people who know Obama well, people who saw him acting as a politician for their interests, they tend to vote for him.

Hillary’s winning margin in New York was much smaller. People obviously are not too happy with her results.

I would be interested in hearing the Obama campaign’s explanation of his vote to pass the Cheney bill, if one is forthcoming. He doesn’t deny voting for Cheney’s energy bill, right? So how does that square with his claim of having better judgment?

I don’t expect any candidate to be perfect. I just would like to see an acknowledgment of the mistake, an explanation of why the mistake was made, and why it won’t happen again. Obama supporters and campaign aren’t doing him any favors by trying to deflect any and all criticism.

I think its about time Hillary spoke out about Obama’s statements that have mislead the American people during this campaign. He has been less than credible and has very questionable ties to some very unsavory characters.

I want to find out more about Rezko, Ayers, Rev. Wright, 190+ votes “present” in the Ill Senate, and now his affiliation with Solos (Billionaire who is fund raising for him). I question his patriotism, his beliefs, and the beliefs of his wife. We don’t know enough about this man, not to mention the people backing his campaign. It appears to me he is backed by “special interest groups.”

His claim that he didn’t vote on the Iraq war is right…he didn’t vote, he didn’t have a say, he wasn’t privy to the information presented and reveiwed, because he wasn’t even in the U.S. Senate at that time. This campaign has been going on for a long time, and I am shocked to find out that many Obama supporters are unaware of this fact, however, blindly give total confidence in him without knowing much about him. I find this disturbing and confusing considering this man is running for the President of the United States of America.

If he makes the Democratic nomination, he will never be elected to the White House. All of his hidden secrets will have come out by then and he won’t have a chance. I find this disturbing because I feel if the American people had most of this information a year ago, he would have dropped out already. What a waste, because of this, it appears we will have to go through another 4 years of Republican control.

I can’t solely blame the media, even though I find most of the news stations stonch Obama supporters. The American people have to take some responsibility for not researching the candidates enough to ensure they are making the right choice by selecting the best candidate.

Afterall, its only our future and the future of our children.

UPDATE: I am being asked why I’m not counting Michigan and Florida.

Um, it’s not that I’m not counting them, friends, it’s that the Democratic National Committee isn’t.

And that’s because, as we all know, those two states disobeyed party rules and held their contests earlier than the DNC wanted them to do. (Harold Ickes, a senior adviser to Sen. Clinton, was on the relevant DNC rules committee and voted to not recognize those states’ delegates. And Clinton herself did not have anything to say about this issue until it became clear that the DNC decision might impact her presidential aspirations.)

But you can see why the Clinton campaign regards those two states and their 368 total delegates (Florida’s 185 pledged and 26 super; Michigan’s 128 pledged and 29 super) as so crucial.

And of course you can see why anyone who professes to believe in democracy and bringing people into the political process (ahem, Mr. Obama) would want those votes to count in some fashion.

So…scrawling on a napkin again…let’s game this out. (Aided once again by the big brain of ABC News’ Karen Travers, though the sheer speculation is mine.)

FLORIDA: Though the candidates did not campaign in Florida, Clinton won 50% of the vote, Obama 33%, and former Sen. John Edwards, D-NC, won 14%.

Since he did not reach the 15% threshold statewide Edwards is not eligible for at-large delegates, but since some delegates are allocated by congressional districts where he did reach 15%, Edwards does get some delegates.

So of the pledged delegates, Clinton gets 106, Obama gets 67, and Edwards gets 12. A net gain of 39 pledged delegates for her.

Of Florida’s 26 superdelegates, we know of 7 for Clinton and 4 for Obama. So that’s a net gain of 3 for her with supers, and a net gain of 42 delegates for Clinton total in Florida.

MICHIGAN: Michigan is much tougher to play out in this exercise, since Obama wasn’t even on the ballot.

You could allocate Clinton’s delegates to her and none to Obama, but that seems insane, or you could allocate Clinton’s delegates to her and those who voted “uncommitted” to Obama, but that also seems rather questionable.

Or you could split the 128 superdelegates down the middle, as Obama’s campaign has suggested, which might end up being Clinton’s best option if she wants to get those Michigan superdelegates recognized, seven of whom support her, with one supporting him.

TOTALS: So you have Clinton’s 1,789 delegates (in my completely hypothetical scenario) + 106 Florida pledged delegates + 7 Florida superdelegates + 64 Michigan pledged delegates + 7 Michigan superdelegates = 1,973 delegates.

And you have Obama’s 1,909 delegates (in my completely hypothetical scenario) + 67 pledged delegates in Florida + 4 Florida superdelegates + 64 Michigan pledged delegates + 1 Michigan superdelegate = 2,045 delegates.

But hold the phone — if Florida and Michigan count, the number of delegates needed to win the nomination jumps from 2,025* to 2,209.

So Obama in this scenario would lead Clinton by 72 delegates, but neither would have enough delegates to secure the nomination, and everything would be in the hands of the roughly 300 uncommitted superdelegates.

Obama would need 165 (about 55%) of them to get the nomination.

Clinton would need 237 (about 80%) of them.

* PLEASE NOTE: While I was doing all this math, the number of delegates required to secure the nomination changed from 2,024 to 2,025, with the swearing-in of new Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif. Maybe I just want to know that if he gets the presidency, he will get it honestly – if this is general knowledge, and he overcomes it. Al Sharpton has a radio show and he said “I has not endorsed anyone.” As I said earlier, Al Sharpton is a advocate for voting rights. There were important referendums on the ballot that were needed to be voted on. The vote that was not recognized was for the Democratic candidates. That had nothing to do with the other things that were on the ballot.

Has anyone botherd to ask themselves how is it possible for a man that is on a weekly television program, on the air three times on sunday, written several books, traveled across the country lecturing and preaching at various denominations, and presented his sermons live on the internet to thousands preaching this so called hate messages for over thirty-six years and no one has heard from one member of his congregation or from anyone across the air waves ever said that they represent his church and agree with what you call hate messages? If I am to take your word for it that Al Sharpton campaign for Obama in Florida, he did not break any rules. The rule was that Clinton and Obama were not to campaign in Florida. I understand that there were individuals not on the staff that did their own private thing. I heard about someone with a sandwich board sign walking up and down the street but these were private things not associated with the candidates.

I see know one wants to tackle that question, I wonder why?

I think the problem is more a problem created by the DNC. The DNC had no good reason for not approving the January 29th date for the primary in Florida and Michigan. The reason, I understand is that New Hempshire has a law that they must be the first primary. Iowa was able to have there before New Hempshire because they had a caucaus instead of a primary. If this is the reason I feel it is a weak-ass excuse. I think all primary should be over my now. Personally, I’m get sick of the whole mess and we have to go all the way to June. I think that all the Primaries should be on one day or at least not lasting any longer than six weeks.

I live in Illinois and i cant for the life of me remember the last honest politician that came from Cook county Obama got where he is because of the corrupt people there
Take, for instance, his endorsement in may of 2007 of Chicago Alderman Dorothy Tillman. Let’s just say Ms. Tillman doesn’t reflect Obama’s mantra of government reform.

Tillman is perhaps most famous for her staunch advocacy of slavery reparations, but also is renowned for her involvement with the scandal-ridden Harold Washington Cultural Center. In 2006, a three-part investigative report by the Chicago newspaper Lakefront Outlook uncovered several accounting irregularities and conflicts of interest by Tillman and her family.

Unfortunately, Alderman Tillman isn’t Obama’s only friend of questionable character. April of 2007 he endorsed Mayor Richard Daley, whose administration and political organization is chock full of investigations and indictments. May 2007 , Daley’s top political aide - former Streets and Sanitation Commissioner Al Sanchez - was indicted for hiring city workers on the basis of political loyalty and work for the pro-Daley House Democratic Organization.

Perhaps Obama is hoping for the same Chicago Election Day magic that the mayor’s father provided for another presidential candidate, John F. Kennedy, back in 1960.

In 2006 Obama endorsed then-candidate and now-Cook County Board President Todd Stroger. This is the same Todd Stroger who in may 07 attempted to reward a $357,000 no-bid contract to a mob-connected janitorial firm with ties to Stroger’s powerful 8th Ward political organization.

It’s the same Todd Stroger who presides over a county administration which, an audit recently learned, is missing $500,000 in taxpayer funds. And it’s the same Todd Stroger whose administration has misplaced, misused, or misspent $30 million in federal homeland security funds that were meant to protect the citizens of Cook County.

Of course, Senator Obama’s colleague - Senator Durbin - also endorsed Stroger, just as both senators also rely on the Stroger-Daley political organizations to mine valuable city votes for them come Election Day.

In a Washington Post op-ed piece entitled, “A Chance to Change the Game,” Obama writes of “scandals” and “special interests” and his proposals for “real reform” that would “restore faith” in government.

The rhetoric, unfortunately, doesn’t match reality, as Senator Obama continues to endorse Chicago machine politicians who are embroiled in scandal, investigations and indictments.

Senator Durbin, for his part, also is full of contradictions. In the January 14 national Democrat Party radio address, Durbin blamed the Republican Party for spawning a “culture of corruption.”

The Republican Party has had its issues, to be sure. The recent George Ryan debacle has proven that. But Senator Durbin has little room to talk. No doubt, come Election Day 2008, he will fully embrace the Daley/Stroger political machine - corruption and all - as he turns a blind eye to their methods and gladly accepts their help in mining every last vote in vote-rich Cook County.

These contradictions are nothing new to Illinois Democrat politicians. The machine’s “godfather” - Mayor Richard J. Daley - weathered many a storm of corruption, only to emerge promising to “reform” the machine.

Like father, like son. As then, today’s Democrat politicians - from Galena to Belleville - rely on the machine to get elected.

Because, you see, it’s not just the reform promises that matter. It’s whether or not you have enough campaign cash to make the voters believe them. And we all know that Obama and Durbin have plenty of that to go around.

The people who critize Rev. Wright’s sermons must not have ever studied the Prophets of the Bible. The Prophets preached very fiery and brimstone messages that the people hated and ran them out of town, tried to stone them or kill them. They preached a reality that people could not deal with. Rev. Wright preaches in the prophetic tradition. Many black people are use to this type of preachng and many like it and many do not like it. That’s the reason people have a choice. You can go to a church with a fiery message or you can go to one that is mundane.

The primary voting season is usually started with N.H. and Iowa. That is “tradition”, not rule.
The 10th Amendment to the Bill of Rights gives states the right to choose their own primary voting date.
Another fact is there were 6 states total, who moved up their voting day. Only 2 were stripped.
Floridians are very angry about this issue.
I think the Democrats will only have to use the fingers on one hand to count the votes they will get in November if this issue is not resolved before the nominating process is completed!
50/50 split, or waiting until the nomination is over is exactly the same as not counting them at all.
