“100 Year War” Spat Continues

While Barack Obama has softened his attacks on John McCain’s Iraq policy after the Arizona Senator accused him of mischaracterizing his position on keeping US troops in the country, he’s not giving McCain a pass on the issue.

At a Town Hall Meeting in Gary, IN, Obama criticized McCain not for wanting to continue the war in Iraq for 100 years, as he’s said in the past, but for being “willing to have a US presence in Iraq for as long as 100 years” — and for whining about Obama’s critique.

“When I criticized him he said, ‘wait wait wait that’s not fair. don’t criticize me. I didn’t say I wanted war for 100 years. I said if US troops weren’t being injured or killed we could have them there for 100 years,’” he said.

According to Obama, that strategy is no better in terms of US treasure and reputation around the world. “That would cost us a trillion dollars or more to keep our troops there. That means investments that we are not making here in the United States. And so he doesn’t even take into account the costs that are involved as well as the message that is sent around the middle east if we have permanent bases there,” he said.

“Because the thinking will be ‘you see? The US just went in there because they were interested in oil. They were just interested in dominating this region.’ That’s what they say. Even if its not true, even if that wasn’t our motives, that’s what they say about us and it doesn’t help us build the kinds of alliances over the long term that are going to be helpful in creating peace.”

Talking Points Handout - Please Review And Comment

——————————————————————————–

Okay, here’s my first draft of talking points to be printed as a handout to all protestors, allowing them to pick from a menu of “soundbites” when talking with the media. I got many of my points from everyone’s posts.

This is just round one, so please please make your comments and suggestions! It’s 4:30am here, so I’m going to bed and will check on your comments tomorrow.

And trust me, my feelings won’t at all be hurt if you just hate it all. I want to do what’s best for this event, so comment away! And please give some extra talking points to add! Trying to get this finalized by Tuesday (if tuesday works for organizers).
Thanks!

• We stage this protest to express our objections to the biased and sexist media against Senator Hillary Clinton.

• We stage this protest to express our objections to the absurd calls for Hillary “to quit”, as we deem it to be another sexist and biased attempt to discredit and demean Senator Clinton’s candidacy for president.

• We stage this protest to demand that Michigan and Florida votes be counted.

• Our purpose is not to discredit any candidate, but rather, to highlight the blatant and biased negative reporting of Senator Clinton by MSNBC and other media outlets.

• Using misogynistic language and framing to dismiss and diminish a woman you disagree with on the issues is damaging to all women and girls.

• We understand important, critical analysis is necessary when evaluating candidates for political office, yet the media has engaged in blatantly unbalanced, negative and many times, irrelevant, analyses of Senator Clinton’s campaign, character, persona, physical attributes, personal history and even psyche (i.e., “Which Hillary will show up at today’s debate?”; analysis of Hillary’s “tears”)

• Every single day is a potential “swift boating” day on MSNBC.

• When Hillary misspeaks, it is reported as she “lied”. When her opponent misspeaks, it is simply an “oversight” or “honest mistake.” This is an obvious double standard in reporting.

• We demand fair and equal reporting.

• We demand equal positive reporting of candidates.

• We believe the media bias against Hillary is being committed by both male and female reporters/journalists/commentators.

• We believe the media bias against Hillary has had a direct negative impact on her candidacy for president, and as such, had the result of taking votes away from Senator Clinton. This, to us, is a serious threat to a free democracy.

• The nonpartisan Center for Media and Public Affairs has found that since last December, 83 percent of the reporting on Senator Obama was positive. Only 53 percent of the reporting on Senator Clinton was positive.

• We demand that the Media STOP with their baseless demands for Hillary to “exit” the race. Hillary’s MILLIONS of supporters are fed up with being told to give up on our candidate! That’s not the choice for the Media to make! This race is exceptionally close with neither candidate having a clear mandate to claim a “popular vote” victory.

• By harping on Hillary’s ability or non-ability to get enough delegates, without mentioning the fact that her opponent can’t either, gives the appearance that Hillary is “wrong” or “desperate” for staying in the race and waiting until all states have voted.

• The media, through the over analyses and discussion of Hillary dropping from this race, is directly responsible for creating in the minds of voters that Hillary is the cause of dissention in the Democratic party.

• The media, has deliberately set up a climate that by telling her to “Get out”, makes people think that this is an important and emergent issue.

• The media has planted the seed that she is the interloper that can’t win;
that by her staying in she is “in the way”; she is disrupting the process and that if she does get the nomination, it will have been stolen.

• By the media making the topic of her dropping out a discussion on a daily basis, Hillary’s message on the real issues affecting Americans, cannot get through (e.g., healthcare, economy, education, etc.)

• DON’T PUNISH THE VOTERS: Party & Elected Officials Broke the Rules–NOT THE PEOPLE!!!

• Michigan and Florida voters went to the polls, count their votes.

• Florida:

o The Florida voters and elected leaders played no role in changing their primary date.
o Iowa and New Hampshire also moved their caucus/primary dates but were not similarly punished by the DNC.
o All 3 candidates were on the democratic ballot and many counties had several other ballot proposals to vote on, and as such, Florida voters came out in droves.
o It is an abhorrent act on the part of the DNC to disqualify Florida voters.
o One candidate ran ads in the state of Florida, despite DNC rules against it.
o XX (number) Floridian voters voted and are now being told their votes will not count.
o Floridians are left with no voice in the democratic process.
o Voting is a core democratic value – something you learn in 2nd grade. By not counting the Florida votes, the democratic party (and one particular candidate) is disenfranchising voters.
o The United States has 50 states, not 48! Count all 50 states votes!

• Michigan:

o Michigan citizens played no role in changing their primary date.
o Iowa and New Hampshire also moved their caucus/primary dates but were not similarly punished by the DNC.
o Senator Clinton left her name on the ballot in Michigan, while 2 candidates removed their names from the Michigan ballot – WHILE the same 2 candidates kept their names on the Florida ballot.
o Senator Clinton did not break any rules by leaving her name on the ballot.
o Senator Clinton did not campaign in Michigan. On the other hand – one of the candidates’ super delegates, supporters (political and otherwise) and campaign volunteers heavily advertised that a vote for him would require voting “uncommitted.” These advertisements were made on the radio as well as vial e-mail and phone.
o (XX number) Michigan voters voted and are now being told their votes will not count.
o The Michigan legislature, without citizen support, and encouragement from one candidate has voted down proposals for a re-vote.
o Michiganders are left with no voice in the democratic process.
o Voting is a core democratic value – something you learn in 2nd grade. By not counting the Michigan votes, the democratic party (and one particular candidate) is disenfranchising voters.
o The United States has 50 states, not 48! Count all 50 states votes!

Obama advance: ‘Get me more white people’

From the account in Carnegie Mellon’s paper, the Tartan, of a Michelle Obama event in Pittsburgh:

While the crowd was indeed diverse, some students at the event questioned the practices of Mrs. Obama’s event coordinators, who handpicked the crowd sitting behind Mrs. Obama.

Wow all i’ve read today about Hillb**ch is wah wah wah. She has lost her birthright to the presidency thank whatever deity you thank. Florida and Michigan broke the rules so who’s fault is that certainly not the people that played by the rules. More whining and moaning from Queen of the Hill about this subject.

OUR FLAG

You may call it an old piece of bunting;
You may call it an old tattered rag;
But thousands have died for it’s honor
And shed thier best blood for the flag.

You may call it an old piece of bunting;
You may call it an old tattered rag;
But Freedom has made it majestic,
And time has ennobled our Flag.

A Flag that Obama holds to no reguard, says it shows oppression to many people and he will not honor or salute it,OUR FLAG.

Was he lying in this video, or has he been lying to us recently, after Wright became an issue?

Obama levels new attacks on McCain
Posted: 04:06 PM ET

Obama criticized McCain’s new mortgage relief plan Thursday.
GARY, Indiana (CNN) — Barack Obama had strong words for Republican John McCain’s economic speech Thursday, saying the Arizona senator’s plan to assist homeowners doesn’t include “any real answers” to the housing crisis.

Speaking to an audience in Gary, Indiana, Obama said, “I’m glad he finally offered a plan. Better late than never.”

“Don’t expect it to actually help struggling families,” he continued. “Because Senator McCain’s solution to the housing crisis seems like a lot like George Bush’s solution to the housing crisis, which is to sit by and hope it passes by while families are facing foreclosure and watching their home values decline.”

McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds was quick to respond.

Obama: I’m not ‘getting fresh or anything’
Posted: 12:00 PM ET

Obama campaigned in Indiana Thursday.
(CNN) – Barack Obama appeared to have a bit of an awkward moment on the campaign trail in South Bend, Indiana.

From the pool report:

“[Obama] posed for report pictures with the staff when he apparently felt his phone start to vibrate in his pocket on his right thigh – against which one woman was closely pressed.

“Now that’s my phone buzzing there,” he said, drawing a laugh. “I don’t want you to think I’m getting fresh or anything.”

Is Obama Using Sexist Language?

——————————————————————————–

Picked this up from an ABC News blog:

Is Obama Using Sexist Language?

February 16, 2008 11:30 AM

Earlier this month, speaking at Tulane University, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, said this about the attacks coming his way from Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY:

“You challenge the status quo and suddenly the claws come out,” Obama said.

The CLAWS come out? Really?

Then yesterday Obama told reporters who had asked about Clinton’s latest attack ad, “I understand that Senator Clinton, periodically when she’s feeling down, launches attacks as a way of trying to boost her appeal.”

That prompted some female TV reporters to question the language he was using.

According to this unofficial transcript, over at MSNBC, Andrea Mitchell and Norah O’Donnell seemed to suggest Obama may have been — if not playing the gender card, then using language women voters might find offensive.

Language such as “when she’s feeling down” “periodically” she “launches attacks.”

Nora O’Donnell: “He said, ‘I understand when she’s down, that she makes these kinds of attacks.’ It’s getting a little personal.”

Andrea Mitchell: “It’s getting a little personal and, very frankly, you know how deeply we interpreted every comment to look for some sort of racial motivation before South Carolina. A lot of people said it was there. But, you know, when you start describing a female candidate as being ‘down’ and ’striking back,’ I don’t know, that’s a little edgy, don’t you think?”

Nora O’Donnell: “Yeah. And I think there’s gonna be a lot more comments about that.”*

Pro-Clinton blogger Taylor Marsh writes that words like this, in her view, indicate “a way of thinking about women. A way of demeaning women in power; even saying we’re not up to the job. Seriously, Senator Hillary Clinton is a woman running for president. Not some emotional menopausal diva popping pills because she’s depressed she broke a nail.”

“Claws”…”feeling down”…I find it hard to envision Obama using the same language if he were facing, say, former Sen. John Edwards, D-NC.

But what do you think?

Obama’s Hypocrisy & Flip-Flops - Please Add to the List if you Know of Other Examples…

——————————————————————————–

This list was compiled from a previous forum submission plus some recent updates…Please add to the list with more examples - this is just a starter…

————————–

OBAMA HYPOCRISY/FLIP-FLOPS

* Obama was anti-union in Iowa, and pro-union in Nevada.

* Obama basically accused the Clintons of being racist in South Carolina and yet it was his own campaign that sent out a 4 page memo to media trying to drum up hysteria about “race”. He knew he would lose without the support of African-Americans and did whatever he had to do in order to turn them against the Clintons.

* Obama was okay with homophobic clergy when he was trying to win South Carolina. He was pro-gay when he was trying to win California.

* Obama thought Ted Kennedy was part of the Washington “establishment” before Obama ran for president. He thinks Ted Kennedy is the best thing since sliced bread since he lost New Hampshire.

* Obama ran TV ads before the Florida primary spending up to one million dollars, even though doing so was against the rules. And then when he didn’t win Florida referred to that primary as a “beauty contest”.

* Obama claims to want to “unify” America, but that offer does not extend to Michigan and Florida. He refuses to accept that he lost those states fairly and squarely.

* Obama was against the war when his left-wing congressional district demanded it and when he had nothing to do with the US Senate who actually had to vote on the matter. Once a member of the Senate, he voted for every war funding in congress. He thought it was reasonable for John Kerry to vote for the war when he was supporting Kerry/Edwards at the 2004 convention. He thinks the same vote from Hillary shows she doesn’t have the judgment to be president.

* Obama is pro-choice when it’s not on the agenda. He votes present when it is on the agenda.

* Obama thinks superdelegates should vote with the popular votes in their states unless their names are Kennedy and Kerry…

* Obama has made intense stands against Washington politics and lobbyists but he’s participating in them and acting as a lobbyist himself. He says he takes no money from lobbyists, but ten of his biggest fundraisers are lobbyists. He constantly talks about his dislike for lobbyists when he acts as a lobbyist himself by trying to buy over superdelegates.

* Obama said he only lifted words twice and they were from Deval Patrick, but he has also lifted lines from John Edwards and Spike Lee. Apparently for Obama, cheating and plagiarism is okay, as long as your mates approve of it.

* Obama was against negative attacks during the “silly season” in response to the plagiarism issue discussed at the Texas debate. Right after the debate, his camp goes negative and sends out an e-mail claiming that Hillary was plagiarizing Edwards.

* Obama said in the Ohio debate that if Canada didn’t agree to certain changes in NAFTA, the US would be pulling out of the agreement. Prior to the debate he had one of his staffers tell Canadian officials not to be concerned about this public statement about NAFTA as it was just political posturing.

* Obama claims to be above dirty politics and yet his campaign has engaged in an endless list of dirty tricks in order to defeat Clinton. They are are still trying.

* Prior to the election Obama advocated for public financing for presidential campaigns. Now that he is bringing in millions of dollars he doesn’t wish to discuss the matter.

* Obama claims to be a uniter, but has tried to systematically divide the country along racial and gender lines and has divided the support base of the Democratic Party in two.

* Obama claims to represent the Democratic Party which stands for social justice and equality. And yet he has spent the last 20 years alligned with a pastor who despises seemingly everything America represents, especially White America.

* Obama argues for racial equality and then accuses his own grandmother of being racist and refers to her as the “typical white person” when discussing his speech later on Pennsylvania radio. So apparently the “typical white person” is racist according to Obama. Well, thanks for the insult - remind me to tell my African-American partner, my Japanese relatives and my friends around the world that I am a “racist” apparently.

And this is just an initial list.

Yes, Obama is a complete SHAM.

Giving a good speech
Pass
and being born Black.

Hell why even bother having a general election just give him the title of General Secretary, err i mean President.

SCARY!

Comment by An Ordinary American

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,
My prediction about PA primary poll:

Hillary Clinton: 60%
Barrack Obama: 40%

If this predictions comes true, on April 23 please say ” I LOVE AMERICA”.

If this doesn’t hold good, then please say “I AGREE WITH REV. WRIGHT AND MICHELLE OBAMA,
THAT AMERICA IS FIT FOR NOTHING”

People who would for sure believe in the latter are:

* CHRIS MATTHEWS (Guy who gets tingled when obama opens his “pie-hole”)

* KeKEITH OLBERMANN (Bonafide loser)

* EUGENE ROBINSON (This black guy should be cleaning dirty toilets in a third world country, rather than writing/appearing on national newspaper/tv)

* MIKA BRZEZINSKI (proud daughter of a well known “Anti-Semite” and worst national security advisor of our times)

* RACHEL MADDOWS (Lesbian to the core)

*RICHARD WOLFFE (This guy cracks me up, a british “reject” talking about AMERICAN politics. Isn’t that wonderful)

*ANDREA MITCHELL (Heard lot of rumors that people experience constipation seeing this woman’s face. maybe they should send her to iraq on a goodwill tour, also we should send her to Gitmo, all the Islamic A-Holes pow’s should be forced to experience this pain)

and the list goes on and on and on……………………………..

I promise not to post anymore tonight since this is long-I worry for our children..what they will be up against in the near future.. we need to recognize what the American people will be facing if we do not face the truth..and change soon. All Democrats and Republicans should read the following:

Book review: America Alone, by Mark Steyn
By Rusty
Cross-posted at New Covenant

My cousin asked me, a while back, if I could post some reviews of the various books I’ve read. I’ve wanted to do that for some time, but the task has always seemed a bit daunting (okay… I’ll admit it, I have always thought that it would take too long to write book reviews). After reading Greg Koukl’s Solid Ground article on How to Read Less More (PDF), though, I think I’ve come across a method to both read a book, provide a review, and give my humble opinion about it.

That said, here is my review of Mark Steyn’s America Alone.

The subtitle of Steyn’s book is The end of the world as we know it. On the cover we see a globe, dotted with flags of Islam, and one lonely American flag. The front cover recommendation quote is, “The arrogance of Mark Steyn knows no bounds.” - Prince Turki al-Faisal, Saudi Ambassador to the United States.

Those three items alone should give a clear indication of the direction that Steyn is heading: America (as he will define it), alone, stands in opposition to the rest of the world (again, as defined by him). And, the rest of the world is, by all accounts, looking decidedly Islamic.

From Steyn, “Let me put it in a slightly bigger nutshell: much of what we loosely call the Western world will not survive the twenty-first century, and much of it will effectively disappear within our lifetimes, including many if not most European countries.”

Prologue - To Be or Not to Be
In the prologue, Steyn tells us that modern societies like to worry, and that they like to worry about issues that are, essentially, notworth worrying about. Take, for instance, the worrying that hasoccurred (and still does) regarding over-population, nuclear war,
global cooling and, now, global warming. Yet, while the long feared nuclear war never occurred, the same elites who fretted over it now appear to be indifferent to the fact that rogue states have nuclear weapons.

What has occurred, in the last generation, is a shift - a shift in population. Between 1970 and 2000, while the developed world declined in percentage of global population, Muslim nations increased. There are three issues that stand out, in this regard:

Demographic Decline - in which we see that the median age of many Muslin nations is in the teens, and that the fertility rate of Muslim people far out paces that of the West.
Welfare State - in which we see that states which rely heavily on governmental subsidies, in conjunction with an aging, childless population, must also rely on an alternative workforce to fund its subsidies.
Civilization Exhaustion - in which we see that Western cultures, mired in pluralism, and too dependent on the state, will be seen as, and are, in fact, weak.
Selected quote -

The longer the war gets, the harder it will be, because it’s a race against time, against lengthening demographic, economic, and geopolitical odds. By “demographic,” I mean the Muslim world’s high birth rate, which by mid-century will give tiny Yemen a higher population than vast empty Russia. By “economic,” I mean the perfect storm the Europeans will face within this decade, because their lavish welfare states are unsustainable with their post-Christian birth rates. By “geopolitical,” I mean that if you think the United Nations and other international organizations are antipathetic to America now, wait a few years and see what kind of support you get from a semi-Islamified Europe.

Part I: The Gelded Age - Demography, Democracy, Destiny

Chapter One - The Coming of Age: Births vs. dearths

Steyn argues that one of the main reasons (if not the main reason) for the coming change, in the shape of the world as we know it, is the West’s dramatically low birthrate. A rate of 2.1 live births per woman is given as the minimum birthrate needed for a society to simply keep existing (i.e., replacement level). Current birthrates for European countries are drastically below this level (e.g., Europe at 1.38). He then correlates the impact of having fewer native citizens with the conundrum of workers needed to fund the socialized state system of government they enjoy. He notes that the U.S. birthrate is currently at 2.11, comparing it to the birthrates of various Islamic countries (e.g., Niger at 7.5, Afghanistan at 6.7, Yemen at 6.6).

Simply put, we are non-reproducing ourselves into non-existence.

Before that happens, however, as their population ages, Western countries will need workers. And a great portion of those workers will come from Islamic countries. The issue that Steyn makes, with regards to the influx of Muslim workers, is that they generally do not want to assimilate into Western culture. Yet, even if only a small percentage are radically opposed to Western culture, it still amounts to a large bloc of people.

Selected quotes -

When my second child was born, a neighbor said, “Well, you’ve got two. You can stop now.” She was being enlightened and responsible. After all, for her entire adult life, the progressive-minded have worried about “overpopulation.” And this view became so pervasive that, in an age of hysteria about “dwindling resources,” it became entirely normal to look on our greatest resource - us - as a liability. So today we’re the dwindling resource, not the oil. We’re the endangered species, not the spotted owl.

Go to any children’s store in Amsterdam or Marseilles or Vienna or Stockholm. Look at the women in headscarves or full abaya. That’s the future.

Chapter Two - Going… Going… Gone: Demography vs. delusion

Reiterating Chapter One’s mantra, Steyn essentially states that all countries with birthrates lower than replacement level will vanish, with Islam stepping in to take over. Apathy + non-replacement = being conquered.

He highlights Japan, a country many once thought was ready to take over the world (technologically, at least). Yet what do we now find in Japan? It is high-tech, God-less, productive, and dieing (aging), with more deaths than births (starting in 2005).

He focuses in on Russia, a country with a birthrate of 1.2 in which 70 percent of its pregnancies are terminated. Steyn then asks us to ponder how Russia will deal with a decidedly low male population and a decidedly valuable nuclear weapons infrastructure?

Selected quote -

That’s the danger for Washington - that most of what Russia has to trade is likely to be damaging to U.S. interests. In its death throes, it could bequeath the world several new Muslim nations, a nuclear Middle East, and a stronger China.

Chapter Three - Men Are from Venus: Primary impulses vs. secondary impulses

Steyn argues that the feminization of most of the Western world is a contributing factor to low birth rates, social programs, and a general dependence on the state. It’s a selfish worldview which worships self gratification over responsibility. So-called progressive countries, as those in Europe, view the U.S. as the aberration yet, for all practical
purposes, they are unable to protect themselves, much less care for themselves.

Selected quote -

What then would happen if America were to follow Mr. Hutton’s advice and “join the world”? Well, those “40 million Americans without health insurance” would enjoy the benefit of a new government health care system and, like their 250 million neighbors, would discover the charms of the health care “waiting list” - the one year, two years, or more Britons and others wait in pain for even routine operations…

Part II: Arabian Night - Believers, Converts, Subjects

Chapter Four - Flying the Coop: Big Mo vs. Big Mac

Per Steyn, Islam is globalizing its most radical elements, while the West continues to be of the mindset that pluralism is the progressive manner with which to deal with radical Islam. In effect, such a mindset encourages, rather than placates, radical Islam. In reality, taking a pluralistic approach to radical Islam allows it to flourish in our midst because the radical Islamist is not interested in pluralism.

What we need to understand, according to Steyn, is that this globalization of Islam is not a new thing. Yet, while it’s been a worldview for some time, it’s only within the last generation that people like the Saudis have had the money (i.e., oil money) to fund the export of ideas. Our misunderstandings also lie in the fact that Muslims, in general, are not interested in assimilating into the Western cultures they emigrate to. Indeed, much of Western culture is abhorrent to Muslims.

Selected quote -

A while back, I found myself behind a car in Vermont that had a one-word bumper sticker containing the injunction “CO-EXIST.” … On this “CO-EXIST” sticker, the “C” was the Islamic crescent, the “O” was the hippy peace sign, the “X” was the Star of David and the “T” was the Christian cross. Very nice, hard to argue with. But the reality is that it’s the first of those symbols that has a problem with “co-existence.” Take the crescent out of the equation and you wouldn’t need the bumper sticker at all. Indeed, co-existence is what the Islamists are at war with - or, if you prefer, pluralism…

Chapter Five - The Anything They’ll Believe In: Church vs. state

In this chapter, Steyn, whether he intended to or not, hits on the post-Christian aspect of much of Western culture. Furthermore, he asserts that Islam will win converts in the West, mainly due to the impotent and weak nature of mainline Christianity. Moderate Muslims are ineffective against radical Muslims, and radical Muslims believe that the whole world belongs to Allah. They look at the West and see a spineless culture, intent on worshiping the environment while chanting pluralistic platitudes. Steyn argues that many converts to Islam simply want to follow a real faith vs. living in a culture which doesn’t take any faith seriously.

Selected quote -

One reason why the developed world has a difficult job grappling with the Islamist threat is that it doesn’t take religion seriously. It condescends to it. In Europe’s wholly secularized environment, the enduring religiosity of America is not just odd, but primitive. It puts Americans in the same category as remote tribes in Africa or cargo culters in the Pacific - anthropologically fascinating, but nonetheless backward.

Chapter Six - The Four Horsemen of the Eupocalypse: Eutopia vs. Eurabia

Steyn argues that Europe is caving in on itself, that the Left thinks of Europe as progressive, but that it is backwards and decaying, self-indulgent and blind. He predicts that Europe will collapse into a version of Islam built on immigrants and converts, drenched in fascism.

The Four Horsemen:

Death - the worldview of John Lennon’s song Imagine is now a reality, in Europe. But it can’t square with reality, and a welfare state produces an infantile populace.
Famine - what happens when there’s no one left to pay for the massive government benefits?
War - expect an escalation in violence, in a bi-cultural Europe, where one culture (Islam) is, truly, the strong one.
Conquest - this is inevitable, when the stronger culture sees the weakness of Europe.
Selected quote -

If Americans think that the post-bombing 2004 Spanish election result was a disgrace, look down the road to the next election cycle, in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and beyond… Think about an election in which 20 percent of the voters are a self-segregating Muslim bloc. If Washington had a hard time getting any useful contribution to the war from Europe in 2001 or 2003, you do the math ten or fifteen years hence.

Part III: The New Dark Ages… And How to Lighten Up

Chapter Seven - The State-of-the-Art Primitive: The known unknowns vs. the knowingly unknowing

Taking a look at the nuances found in the 21st century, Steyn notes that we’re facing an entire culture that is both modern and fanatically primitive. While the West is intent on trying to “stabilize and contain”, always avoiding the problem, the simple point of fact is that we appear weak to fanatical Muslims. Steyn argues that there are 3 strategies that radical Islamists are using against a dying West: 1) demography, 2) conversion, and 3) an intertwining of modernity with ancient hatreds.

Regarding nuclear weapons - they have the intent, is there any reason we should not expect them to be used? How will we know? Consider the futility of attempting to coexist with suicide bombers, or with terrorists who are fighting to eliminate the West? This is the face of the enemy we are up against.

Selected quote -

We are not dealing with “enemies” like the Soviets, or “terrorists” like the IRA… Try to imagine what a jihadist feels when he looks at a Russian schoolchild or an Israeli diner or a British contractor or an American pacifist.

Now try to imagine how he’d feel if asked to participate in a nuclear plot, and to kill vastly greater numbers of Russians and Israelis and Britons and Americans.

Chapter Eight - The Unipole Apart: America vs. everyone else

The point of Steyn’s book - America is left alone. How will it cope? Will it be able to? No one else can win the long war, and the enemy knows that all it has to do is break our will. The enemy sees cultural respect as weakness. If our will is broken, it will not matter that our military is strong enough to win this war. We go out of our way to act civilized, yet win no respect. Diplomatically, we stand alone. We inadvertently fund our own destruction with the continued consumption of oil from the Middle East. We fail to tap into the information age resources so effectively utilized by Islamists. We are the world’s superpower, yet if we crumble, what power will replace us?

Selected quote -

Almost as soon as American troops entered Iraq, Senate Democrats demanded to know what the “exit strategy” was. “Exit strategy” is a phrase that might have been designed as a textbook definition of lack of will. In war, there are usually only two exit strategies: victory or defeat. The latter’s easier. Just say, whoa, we’re the world’s dominant power but we can’t handle an unprecedently [sic] low level of casualties, so if you don’t mind we’d just as soon get off at the next stop…

For a serious power, the correct answer to “What’s the exit strategy?” is: there isn’t one, and there shouldn’t be one, and it’s a dumb expression.

Chapter Nine - The Importance of Being Exceptional: Citizens vs. dependents

Steyn lays out the foundation of how America can win - avoid a Leftist mentality and a welfare state condition. The Left, especially progressive Europeans, loathe (what they consider to be) the typical redneck American. He references London’s Daily Mirror, and deprecatory comments made by a Brian Reade, regarding such Americans. Yet Steyn argues that it is exactly those qualities that set America apart from the rest of the West, and that it is those qualities that will enable America to win.

While governmental procedures slow a system down, making its regularity readily predictable and essentially providing ready access for a 9/11 attack, private enterprise thrives on finding innovative, quick, and efficient solutions to problems. We must move away from bigger government. Steyn proposes that our income tax structure be structured to favor families, and that affordable housing be a top priority within our communities. In short: Self-reliance and private innovation.

Selected quote -

Howard Zinn, in his introduction to Cindy Sheehan’s book Dear President Bush, pens this paean to the plucky underdog: “A box cutter can bring down a
tower. A poem can build up a movement. A pamphlet can spark a revolution.”

But the only reason “a box cutter can bring down a tower” is because on September 11 our defenses against such a threat were exclusively the province of the state. If nineteen punks with box-cutters had tried to pull some stunt in the parking lot of a sports bar, they’d have been beaten to a pulp.

Chapter Ten - The Falling Camel: Last Legs

Steyn quotes an Arabic proverb, “A falling camel attracts many knives,” and then applies it to Europe. It is falling and, as it falls, it continues to be attacked. To win, he argues, we must have the will to fight. Islamic terrorists have a means (to an end) that is different from anything we’ve ever faced. We’ve feminized our approach through our multi-culturalism: we ask “why?”, we try to understand, we sympathize, we concede, and we apologize - and these are all seen as signs of weakness.

How to win and what to do? Steyn offers three options, to which I’ve added a fourth: 1) Submit to Islam, 2) Destroy Islam, 3) Reform Islam, and (my offering) 4) Live Christian. Steyn argues that options 1 and 2 are unthinkable, and that option 3 can only succeed if Muslims are behind it.

He does propose conditions that the West can provide, to facilitate the success of option 3: 1) Support women’s rights, 2) Roll back ideological exports which support radical Islam, 3) Support economic and political liberty in the Muslim world, 4) Deny international
legitimacy to Muslim states that persecute non-Muslims, 5) Throttle the funding of Muslim think tanks in America, 6) Develop a strategy for countering Islamism on the ideological front, 7) Marginalize the UN, NATO, etc., 8 ) Cease bankrolling oil producers by ceasing our dependence on oil, 9) End the Iranian regime, and 10) Strike militarily
when the opportunity presents itself.

Certainly, as he states, the last two options are controversial. Yet, he argues, we cannot rely on Russia, Europe, or China for aid. We are soft. The peace we’ve enjoyed since 1945 is unprecedented. It has, though, left us believing that that is the way it always will be - it
hasn’t been, and it won’t always be.

Selected quotes -

This book isn’t an argument for more war, more bombing, or more killing, but for more will.

We’ve been shirking too long, and that’s unworthy of a great civilization. To see off the new Dark Ages will be tough and demanding. The alternative will be worse.

Recommendation:

I think that Steyn presents a compelling argument for the threat of Islamic terrorism, the root causes of the West’s inability to respond, and the necessary position the U.S.A. now finds itself in. From a strictly secular viewpoint, he outlines the issues quite well. I believe that our current condition is due to our affluence and, therefore, a lack of a “need for God.” In our self-reliance we have become self-indulgent, thereby pushing God aside or, at best, using religion only in how it might best alleviate the stress of our day to day living. If Christians in the West were to truly live as Christians, then we know that the gates of Hell cannot prevail.

If you would like to get a concise and to-the-point analysis of how the real threat of Islamic terror affects us, then I’d recommend reading Steyn’s book.

Obama is a liar and a defeatist.

Actually saying its bad for the USA to have a presence in Iraq for 100 years is dumber then the lie he and the Democrats still peddle about what McCain actually said.

Thank God John McCain is obviously going to be elected the next President of the United States of America.

Nothing for black people I do think it was those terrible white establishment tht passed the civil rights bill. Let me ask you what have you done for yourselves. You allowed the Great Society of Democrats to emasculate your men. You allowed your neighborhoods to be turned into ghettos. You allow your hate to bame the whites and government for your failures instead of taking personal responsibility.

Tameeka, you seem to care only about black people. AMERICA IS A COUNTRY WITH PEOPLE OF DIFFERENT COLOR AND CREED. I am an asian- american. My great-gandfather was an immigrant to this country. did people ever make fun of him for his looks? absolutely they did. but he didn’t let those bother him. He worked very hard so that his family can live a decent life in America.

regarding slavery, it was abolished during and after the “CIVIL WAR”. If my knowledge of american history is correct, 600000+ people (predominantly whites) died in that war fighting on either side of the issue. To be more precise, whites liberated blacks from slavery. In order to achieve that President Lincoln (GREATEST PRESIDENT OF ALL TIMES) had to pay with his own life.

Its time to get over the slavery issue. there is no point in keeping grudges against people for what their ancestors did. its just plain insane.

OBAMA,S LA LA LAND: your postings are very good. I assume the best is yet to come.

who say that 600000 of them mostly were white? most of the casautly of war was blacks.

kathy your history is messed up. blacks liberated themselves from slavery.

Comment by kathy WI

Re-arguing the war is a waste of time, useful only for political parlor games and bar stool bluster.
It is frightening to realize that those who would lead could be so cavalier about subsituting their limited judgement in military matters for the experience and deep knowledge of the professionals
Gen. Patraeus and commanders on the field.
Obama is a weak empty suit. I think Hillary will over take him. People with an IQ over 10 are finally seeing the light. He will not win the general. Especially when it is known how he wants to pick our pockets. same with Hillary. Neither will win.
Strength and resolute.
