Clinton Chief Strategist Penn Steps Down

Just days after the Wall Street Journal reported that he’d met with the Colombian government to discuss how his PR firm could help pass a free trade deal with the United States that Senator Clinton opposes, Mark Penn is out as chief strategist of the Clinton Campaign.

In a statement, campaign manager Maggie Williams said “After the events of the last few days, Mark Penn has asked to give up his role as Chief Strategist of the Clinton Campaign; Mark, and Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates, Inc. will continue to provide polling and advice to the campaign.”

“Geoff Garin and Howard Wolfson will coordinate the campaign’s strategic message team going forward.”

Sources within the campaign say “Senator Clinton was disappointed that the meeting with the Colombians had occurred. She is a strong opponent of the trade deal. As Mark indicated in his apology on Friday, he knew that the meeting was a mistake.”

“Over the course of the weekend, he recognized that he needed to step aside as chief strategist and Senator Clinton agreed. He will continue to provide polling and advice as part of the team.”

Penn, a controversial and little liked figure within the campaign, was behind much of the campaign’s message - including emphasizing her toughness and the “strength and experience” theme. He’d long clashed with others in the campaign who wanted to emphasize Hillary’s human qualities.

He should be sued for Political Malpractice…What was he thinking…I’m glad he lost his contract…

Oh ,,I’m sure Clinton haters will run with this one.

ALL politicians should be sued for Political Malpractice, however they would then pass a bill to pay us for the damages we would win in the court case. A vicious circle.

We expect our politicians to lie, we do not expect them to be marry or have pastors that are anti American hate filled racists who are only proud of American when they are getting there way. (and I did raise my hand for Obama in Iowa, I wouldn’t have if the news had reported on Wright in Dec when they had the tapes.)

Rev. Wright in a different light
By William A. Von Hoene Jr.
March 26, 2008
By William A. Von Hoene Jr.

During the last two weeks, excerpts from sermons of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., pastor for more than 35 years at Trinity United Church of Christ on Chicago’s South Side, have flooded the airwaves and dominated our discourse about the presidential campaign and race. Wright has been depicted as a racial extremist, or just a plain racist. A number of political figures and news commentators have attempted to use Sen. Barack Obama’s association with him to call into question Obama’s judgment and the sincerity of his commitment to unity.

I have been a member of Trinity, a church with an almost entirely African-American congregation, for more than 25 years. I am, however, a white male. From a decidedly different perspective than most Trinitarians, I have heard Wright preach about racial inequality many times, in unvarnished and passionate terms.

In Obama’s recent speech in Philadelphia on racial issues confronting our nation, the senator eloquently observed that Rev. Wright’s sermons reflect the difficult experiences and frustrations of a generation.

It is important that we understand the dynamic Obama spoke about.

It also is important that we not let media coverage and political gamesmanship isolate selected remarks by Wright to the exclusion of anything else that might define him more accurately and completely.

I find it very troubling that we have distilled Wright’s 35-year ministry to a few phrases; no context whatsoever has been offered or explored.

I do have a bit of personal context. About 26 years ago, I became engaged to my wife, an African-American. She was at that time and remains a member of Trinity. Somewhere between the ring and the altar, my wife had second thoughts and broke off the engagement. Her decision was grounded in race: So committed to black causes, the daughter of parents subjected to unthinkable prejudice over the years, an “up-and-coming” leader in the young black community, how could she marry a white man?

Rev. Wright, whom I had met only in passing at the time and who was equally if not more outspoken about “black” issues than he is today, somehow found out about my wife’s decision. He called and asked her to “drop everything” and meet with him at Trinity. He spent four hours explaining his reaction to her decision. Racial divisions were unacceptable, he said, no matter how great or prolonged the pain that caused them. God would not want us to assess or make decisions about people based on race. The world could make progress on issues of race only if people were prepared to break down barriers that were much easier to let stand.

Rev. Wright was pretty persuasive; he presided over our wedding a few months later. In the years since, I have watched in utter awe as Wright has overseen and constructed a support system for thousands in need on the South Side that is far more impressive and effective than any governmental program possibly could approach. And never in my life have I been welcomed more warmly and sincerely than at Trinity. Never.

I hope that as a nation, we take advantage of the opportunity the recent focus on Rev. Wright presents—to advance our dialogue on race in a meaningful and unprecedented way. To do so, however, we need to appreciate that passion born of difficulty does not always manifest itself in the kind of words with which we are most comfortable. We also need to recognize that the basic goodness of people like Jeremiah Wright is not always packaged conventionally.

The problems of race confronting us are immense. But if we sensationalize isolated words for political advantage, casting aside the depth of feeling, circumstances and context which inform them, those problems not only will remain immense, they will be insoluble.

William A. Von Hoene Jr. of Chicago is a member of Trinity United Church of Christ.

And that, ladies and gents is what the furor is all about. What we all heard was hate speech. You can dress it up any way you want, but Wright stood there and spouted racist rhetoric

He accused the US govt. of creating and spreading aids to kill black people. I have yet to see a single successful attempt to spin that one.

We are upset because BO lied to us about his association with a church that even a large number of blacks find…distasteful.

Obama’s relationship with Allison Davis — the alleged go-between in Rezko’s scheme to shake down Tom Rosenberg — could pose another problem for him. Obama worked for Davis at the law firm of Davis Miner Barnhill. Later, when Obama sat on the board of a charity called the Woods Fund, he voted to invest $1 million in a partnership operated by Davis, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Levine’s testimony in the Rezko trial puts Davis in the middle of an attempted quid pro quo, making him yet another associate Obama might be pressured to disown. And the trial could stretch well into May, at which point a Rezko conviction could lead to even more headaches for the candidate. If Rezko is looking at a long prison sentence and decides to start talking, who knows what he might say?

It actually has strengthened my relationship with African Americans at work. We communicate more and talk openly about the issues. Holly - You’re even more uneducated than I thought or you finally have an excuse to disassociate with African Americans.

Redneck Woman,

I can see you not voting for Obama because he is inexperienced or is untrustworthiness, but I don”t understamd why his ethnic background would play a part. Only a small minority of Muslims are extremeist, just like a small number of whites are in the KKK, and a small number of blacks are in the Black Panthers.

TR,

I am certain the church makes inroads on the horrible gang and drug problems down there.

I must tell you that by comparing Wright to Farrakhan, you make it harder, not easier, to have even shred of respect. Farrakhan is an extremely well documented racist, bigot and anti-Semite. His church most certainly preaches separatism and black supremacy.

The fact remains that TUCC is not your “typical” black church.

Michelle Obama’s thesis … is unavailable until Nov. 5, 2008, at the Princeton library.
(not until after nomination, wonder why?)
Though she came from a black working-class neighborhood in Chicago, she writes that
“my experiences at Princeton have made me far more aware of my ‘blackness’ than ever before.”
“There was no doubt in my mind that as a member of the black community, I am obligated to this community
and will utilize all of my present and future resources to benefit the black community first and foremost.”
“Predominately white universities like Princeton are socially and academically designed to cater
to the needs of the white students comprising the bulk of their enrollments.”
She further suggests that even if she assimilates into white society after Princeton,
she will “remain on the periphery of society: never becoming a full participant.”
“Blacks must join in solidarity to combat a White opressor.”

“For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country because it feels
like hope is finally making a comeback,”

The AIDS stuff is nonsense. Did your reference confuse AIDS with the Tuskegee Experiement, whcih Clinton apologized for?
—————————–

I kid you not, there is a large segment of the black community that really believes this stuff.

It is on par with other conspiracy theories and has been circulating since the late 1980’s.

I snipped this out from Snopes

Part of the prevalence of the AIDS origin rumor that pins responsibility for the virus on the CIA (or another group within the American government) may be due to deliberate Soviet misinformation designed to discredit the USA. An article charging AIDS was the product of
U.S. germ warfare experiments first surfaced in the Soviet newspaper “Literary Gazette” in 1985 and claimed the AIDS virus was created at a supersecret Army research laboratory in Fort Detrick, Maryland. The only source cited was the “Patriot”, a leftist Indian newspaper that, U.S. experts charged, was a favored conduit of the KGB for its disinformation campaigns.

In 1986 at a summit held in Zimbabwe, what purported to be a scholarly paper linking the U.S. military with AIDS was widely circulated. The authors did not have any expertise in AIDS research, but their offering was taken somewhat seriously by many who read it. The paper charged the disease had been introduced into Africa from Europe through homosexual practices or intravenous drug use, but by tainted blood supplies, which may have originated in the U.S. Its conclusion was unambiguous: AIDS was let loose on the world by biological warfare experimenters at Fort Detrick. That the rumor might well have been deliberately formulated by a foreign government at odds with the USA was an interesting curiosity.

In recent years, the government has publicly apologized for non-consensual experimentation such as the Tuskegee Experiment, which used black males as a control group to test the effects of syphilis. Of course the government has formally stated that scientists must have informed consent when conducting research. But, this becomes a thin line to draw when there is controversy over exactly what is research and what is considered practice. Our government has made tremendous efforts to denounce studies such as the Tuskegee Syphilis Study; however, the government has not made any major steps toward preventing these types of experiments on certain groups. In fact, there are laws that prevent military soldiers from a remedy when they have suffered as the result of a non-consensual experiment.

From 1959 to 1961, Wright attended Virginia Union University,[1] in Richmond. Inspired by President John F. Kennedy’s 1961 challenge to “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country,” Wright gave up his student deferment, left college and joined the United States Marine Corps and became part of the 2nd Marine Division with the rank of private first class. In 1963, after two years of service, Wright then transferred to the United States Navy and entered the Corpsman School at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, where he graduated as valedictorian.[6] Having excelled in corpsman school, Wright was then trained as a cardiopulmonary technician at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland where he graduated as salutatorian.[6] Wright was assigned as part of the medical team charged with care of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s (see photo of Wright caring for Johnson after his 1966 surgery). Before leaving the position in 1967, the White House awarded Wright three letters of commendation.[7][8][9]

Comment by Holly to hannity man

Hannity man you apperantly have done no homework on any of the canidateds. Obama came to my state last week and said that yes, he is a christian but he does not beleive that jesus is the only wat to heaven ,all good people of muslium and Jews would still go to heaven, said his mother did not share his faith but he beleived that she was in heaven, she does not even beleive their is a God ,but she is in heaven. Most of us in NC beleive what the bible tells us as truth not what Obama says is truth…..I beleived him during the debate, he is no more christian than his mother or preacher. Then in his book he calls himself a muslium…….. who know what to beleive about this man, he is just to risky, I have never seen a fish flip flop so much!!!!!!!!!
