The Endless Campaign and the Hunt for Superdelegates

As Barack Obama put it today, this primary season is “like a good movie that lasted about a half and hour too long.” When addressing a crowd in Pittsburgh today, Obama joked, “I think there are some people who felt like God, when will this be over?” He later qualified this by adding, “It’s been hard and tough because both Clinton and I understand what is at stake, how important this race is, how important the next presidency will be to the American people and to families right here in Pennsylvania.”

But there are many within the Democratic Party who agree that the longer the race to determine the Democratic nominee goes on, the more it could fracture the Party and, come November, hurt the eventual nominee. Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT), who was an early Obama supporter, today told Vermont Public Radio, “There is no way that Senator Clinton is going to win enough delegates to get the nomination…She ought to withdraw and she ought to be backing Senator Obama. Now, obviously that’s a decision that only she can make. Frankly, I feel that she would have a tremendous career in the Senate.”

Neither Senator Obama nor his campaign has suggested that Senator Clinton should drop out of the race, but they are quick to point out that the pledged delegate math doesn’t add up to a Clinton nomination. But it will likely not add up for Obama either as neither candidate is likely to amass the needed 2,024 to win the nomination.

Which brings us to the now infamous superdelegates - the former presidents, governors, senators, congressmen, and other political types who may very well end up holding the fate of the Democratic nominee in their hands should both candidates fall short of that magic number. As it stands now, Clinton still leads Obama in the superdelegate count (250 - 216), but Obama has been closing ground quickly since February 5th, picking up 66 to Clinton’s one. And each superdelegate get is crucial.

Today, Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) became the latest superdelegate to pledge support for Barack Obama. The junior PA senator heaped praise onto Obama for his intellect and his judgment, and told reporters he hoped the Party picks a nominee by late May or early June. “If you get too far into the summer, I think positions begin to harden and I think that we lose time to not just unite and bring people together, but also we’re giving the Republican nominee more time to make the case against our nominees without having enough rebuttal because they’re going to, their nominee will come at us very hard and I think we hope that we can resolve this,” Casey said.

But, Casey also noted he wasn’t sure who the nominee would be, even if he “hopes” it’s Obama.  “[Senator Clinton's] a great Senator, she’s a great leader. And one thing we all agree on, all of us as Democrats across this commonwealth and across this country – we agree on so much, and one thing we agree on is in 2008, we’re going to elect a Democrat to the presidency of the United States.”

And with that observation, the crowd cheered and Obama nodded in agreement.

Obama, if you’re really concerned this campaign has lasted too long. I have a simple solution - DROP OUT OF THE RACE and throw your support behind Senator Clinton.

Comment by profitleads

Obama knows that Clinton is not going to drop out. The nominee will come from a backroom deal and he’s sorely lacking in backroom skills.

EJ:

Assuming that one of the two candidates should drop out of the race and support their rival, what justification do you have for suggesting that it should be Obama, and not Clinton, who drops out? The standard argument is that Obama leads in states, delegates, and popular vote. What rationale prompts you to suggest that he should be the one to bow out, and not Senator Clinton?

the SUPER DELEGATES can vote for whom they choose. even though some have said they will endorse HE\ SHE,, BY july 1st ,, ALL of that can change. YES THEY DO HAVE THAT RIGHT.

Comment by Jordan Weber-Flink

JUST SAYIN’:

Absolutely. They can do whatever they want. That’s the whole reason the super-delegate system was created - so that if the electorate’s choice is totally unelectable, or turns out to be a baby-r@ping sociopath a few weeks before the general election begins, they can overturn the will of the voters and choose a suitable candidate.

Unfortunately some people are arguing that this also means they can overturn the will of the voters in every election, based on whim. While this is technically true, abusing such authority would do serious and lasting damage to the party. Since the argument has been adopted by Clinton supporters, I’ll point out that the current situation does not seem to warrant such a move; indeed it seems contraindicated.

Comment by to Sen Leahy and your fellow cowards:

Congratulations…you earn a place in the democratic dunce line-up, right after the ditz Pelosi, Richardson, Dodd and Dean. What a dumb and dumber list.

Why the hell should Clinton stop campaigning when the race is virtually tied??

63% of Americans are still considering the viability and electability of each candidate and you want this to stop so we can PRETEND to be unified around Obama. This is the 1st time in my life that I have watched a dem primary get hijacked by those who are supposed to be safeguarding voters’ interests. By calling the election in favor of Obama, all of you send out the message to potential Clinon voters that they should stay home during the upcoming elections. Why are all of you hell-bent on determining the outcome of this election?

FACE FACTS: Neither Candidate will get the del. number needed for the nomination. Let the American people vote so the superdelegates have a clear picture of who won the blue states, the important swing states, and red states. Let the superdelegates determine the ‘electability” of each candidate in a face off with MCain by looking at ALL the numbers. You say that allowing this to continue creates a divisive, fractured party. That’s Bull—sh*t. Why would getting a clear picture of the electoral map be problematic? Continuing to hijack a civic process guaranteed by our founding fathers will create a civil war and a HUGE backlash against the DNC.

If Pelosi, Richardson, Dodd, Dean and Leahy had integrity (or b*lls), they would allow revotes in Fl and Mich so that all dems would have a better understanding of who would carry the swing states in November. Obama the coward will not allow this because he is afraid to lose delegates. What a pansy…it is possible that he could win one, the other or both. But he is afraid of letting go of a very small insignificant lead. Even if he did trail each election, both he and Clinton would still have to take their case to the superdelegates because a clear winner hasn’t been determined. I can only conclude that this group of fools has decided that upsetting Obama’s core support base (fill in the blank) is more important than making a decision based on ALL of the voting results.

You all deserve to lose your seats to Republicans since you place self-interest over common good.

DNC LEADERSHIPS must set a good example!!!!

You are not showing a good example to democrats by not doing something to protect those delegates in Michigan and Florida… In a way you are betraying your delegates…
You yourself is allowing Obama a free ride…

You do not have the moral authority to direct by not showing good leadership>>>

Comment by David from Dothan

Over the last twenty years political leadership in the country has suffered a great loss, the ability to lose gracefully. We teach our children to lose with grace. Little leaguers line up to shake hands after a game. At academic competitions the losers applaud the winner. At the annual pageants the runner-ups give out hugs and flowers. At the Olympics, many compete knowing that they have very little chance of actually winning and in losing they take pride in honorably representing their country. However, when it comes to politics the adults in the room forget the lessons of life and resort to their preschool behavior of “me first” and “that’s mine.” The lessons learned in victory and in defeat are forgotten. It is no longer acceptable to compliment the winner. Instead the loser “spins the news” to explain why thy really did not lose and why their opponent did not deserve to win. The loser today refuses to accept the reality of defeat but vows to go on in spite of the odds and at whatever the costs. They adopt a “scorched earth“ approach which in the end makes losers out of everybody. Our leaders need to stop thinking of their own future and start thinking about the greater good. After all is not the true role of a leader to think of others before themselves.

Jordan Weber -Fink,,, I am in agreement with you that some people are arguing that this also means they can overturn the will of the voters in every election. This is an illusion. It would be an abuse of so called authority. The voters will see through the smoke and mirror trick, or at least, I HOPE SO.

Disclaimer: I am an Obama supporter.

“FACE FACTS: Neither Candidate will get the del. number needed for the nomination. Let the American people vote so the superdelegates have a clear picture of who won the blue states, the important swing states, and red states.”

I agree, neither candidate will get the delegate number for a decisive win. An honest assessment of the current prospects suggests that three months from now we will probably be exactly where we are now, with Obama in a modest lead of 1.5 - 2.0 %.

Also, “electability” changes for each candidate. For example, if you break it down by blue/swing/red, you get a pretty good idea of how Clinton would fare. But Obama’s entire candidacy is predicated on the idea that he can change the map - swing more independents to the left and steal one or two red states. In that case, dismissing his ability to sway moderates and even liberal republicans counteracts Clintons ability to get out the vote in traditional blue states.

“Let the superdelegates determine the ‘electability” of each candidate in a face off with MCain by looking at ALL the numbers.”

Fair enough, but it’s reasonable to suggest (again) that the numbers aren’t going to change that much.

“You say that allowing this to continue creates a divisive, fractured party. That’s Bull—sh*t.”

Well, here I think you are wrong. If we decided today, there would be fractures and fights, yes; but there would also be a much longer period of healing, unification and solidification. I’m not a politician or a political pundit, but it seems to me that getting that out of the way before, say October, would probably be a good idea. If you doubt me, look at some of the recent polls. We’re already seeing some division, in the folks who say they’d rather vote republican than for the other democrat. Again I feel that a longer cool-down period after the decision is made will let these people get over their disappointments and seriously examine McCain and whoever the Dem ends up being. From a partisan perspective, Democratic leadership WANT that to happen, so that McCain loses and Obama or Clinton wins.

“Why would getting a clear picture of the electoral map be problematic? Continuing to hijack a civic process guaranteed by our founding fathers will create a civil war and a HUGE backlash against the DNC.”

Getting a clear picture isn’t that hard - it’s what polling is for. They haven’t hijacked anything. They’ve simply made some pretty blunt suggestions. There’s going to be a backlash regardless - the entire democratic electorate is split at something like 48-52. The party elders are simply suggesting that it might be worth it to get this phase over with and move on before McCain gets too much of a free ride.

David:

I agree with you, but the rationalization is “I’ll put the country through this terrible ordeal because, in the end after I’ve fixed everything, they’ll thank me for it.”

Unfortunately one of the systemic character flaws in politicians is overweening self-regard; it’s hard to tell a person to drop out when they are convinced that they and ONLY THEY can save America. Clinton and Obama are both guilty of this, although in my opinion Obama has a saving grace that Clinton lacks: self-awareness.

After weeks of demanding that Hillary drop because she can’t win, MSNBC Political Director, Chuck Todd wrote today that Hillary is justified in her staying in. Today on the Chris Mathews show, Chris after attacking hillary for weeks says that Hillary, because of her foriegn policy and because Israel is comfortable with her, that she would make a good Vice President.

For weeks the Florida Hillary voters have, on all of the Fox News and Newsweek Blogs, demanded that Hillary be at least given first refusal for the VP spot. Could it be that Obama and MSMBC finally realize that he can’t beat McCain with out Hillary’s Florida supporters. If it’s true, the group that has been relentlessly driving it home to all of us can celebrate.

Comment by Re to J Weber-Fink

Thanks for your responses to the above post. I would maintain that we have 3 months left of primary elections and we should give the other states a chance to vote BECAUSE it is so close. Afterward, the superdelegates will be able to make their decision after having looked at the whole picture. Very loyal followers on both sides will at least concur that the process was legit, everyone had a chance to vote, and would probably be willing to vote for the other candidate knowing that it was a “fair” fight. “Forcing” a candidate out of a race will create a very disturbing backlash with longterm consequences.

The horrible dilemma of being a superdupercalafragalistic delegate.

If I vote for the Banshee;

a. She loses the primary, I am screwed by my constituency and out of a job.

b. She wins the primary, loses the general, I am screwed by my constituency and out of a job.

c. She wins the primary, wins the general, I might be able to convince my constituency to keep me in office, but if not, perhaps the Slick Willie family will give me a public teat to suckle at.

If I vote for BO;

a. He loses the primary, I get to look over my shoulder for the rest of my political career, waiting for the Slick Willie team to pull the trigger on me.

b. He wins the primary, loses the general, I get to look over my shoulder for the rest of my political career, waiting for the Slick Willie team to pull the trigger on me.

c. He wins the primary, wins the general, I get to look over my shoulder for the rest of my political career, waiting for the Slick Willie team to pull the trigger on me, hoping that when they do, I can get some help from BO finding a public teat to suckle at.

Yes sir, gotta love the prestige and perks of being an SD.

Nonsense. Both sides have continued being divisive.

Respect? For either of them? Why? because they can tack an honorific at the beginning of their names?

The Banshee is one of the most ruthless, corrupt and cutthroat politicians to ever grace our fair nation. The list of her perfidies is almost without end.

BO is different only in his youth and relative inexperience in the league the Banshee plays in. He is a liar and a fraud, and he gained his first political seat through standard Chicago slash and burn tactics. He has stood before the American people and repeatedly lied during this campaign.

Neither of them deserves a lick of respect, from anyone.

Am i totally paranoid or does anyone else worry that Obama is a puppet with his strings being pulled by some unknown puppet master. Interesting that the two superdelegates that supported Obama this week both did so when their histories would indicate that they shouldn’t. One being a long time Clinton friend and the other being a Catholic and anti abortion. Why would Casey support a canidate that supports partial birth abortion. Obama and Clinton are too close on all the other issue so this should be a tie breaker. Was the New York govenors fall a coincidence or a message from the puppetmaster that you to can fall if you don’t cooperate? Was that the message behind the new govenors public confession.? Are the superdelegates being given the choice of ruin or Obama?

Al Gore cannot take a public role mostly because it will expose him to inconvenient questions about an inconvenient lie.

He cannot afford to have the global worming debate be re-opened, with him, because any average intelligence 8th grader could shred him with all of the data that has accumulated since he declared the debate to be over.

He certainly can’t accept a VP slot (as if either Dem would be that stupid) for the same reason.

If you want to find the strings, look to several places.

In the Illinois State Senate. BO owes a string or two to Emil Jones.

I suspect that Wright will remain an adviser behind the scenes. There is a string.

Look to Robert Malley. He may have a few strings tied to BO.

Wake up Americans especially in the rest of the states and Puerto left to vote. Answer the call and let’s make history with Hillary. Real men and women can vote for a woman. It really will be ok. My question, per an analogy made by my business partner, to the MSM is why does every bad comment made about Obama slide off of him like teflon (clean it up and on to the next) and they stick to Hillary like velcro (can’t ever get past them)? I guess you could go back to the Virgin Islands and lie on a beach while I work, if you were just GIVEN my vote, huh? No doubt you think I shouldn’t have a right to vote. That’s what Frederick Douglass thought about Susan B., too, even after the universal suffrage movement put it’s own rights on hold in favor of abolition. After the passage of the 13th & 14th amendments, Douglass decided it was sooo much more important that black men have the right to vote than all of the people who helped make him a free man, and were also seeking the right to vote, that he made an 11th hour deal which disenfranchised all women for another 50 years until the 19th amendment in 1919. Get out of my state.

I suppose it depends on how you view big. I suspect more will come from the Rezco trial, but whatever is really buried there will take time.

There are actually a number of items that will dog him in the general.

When he was in Kenya, he got involved in the campaign of Raila Odinga. Seems like a pretty bad dude. Supports Sharia. Very little press to date, but the current administration of Kenya were really pissed.

As his foreign policy advisers get hauled out into daylight, he will have a tough time explaining it all away. His pro-Arab stances are going to hit the spotlight.

Overall, I doubt he has much in the way of corruption or ticking bombs. He’s young and hasn’t had much time to build a resume beyond what people always expect of politicians.

His worst problem is that he presented himself as Mr. Squeaky Clean.

New Black Panther Party…………………Ye.ahhhhhhhhhhhhh they for Obama
Read they have some of the same ideals as Trinity…….Black….Black…..Black…..I guess if you’re a different race …go F— Yourself.

This is taken from their website:

We as a local and national party strive for Black Unity (Umoja) and Black Solidarity with other Black organizations worldwide. We shall build alliances with organizations, leaders, Churches, Mosques and like. When necessary we must deal firmly and appropriately with “Black” leadership who betray the interests of the Black community or Black Nation.

We must BUY BLACK as often as possible and cease unnecessary spending with non-Black owned businesses.

We recognize the reality of politics as being a process that controls the distribution of resources in the city and our community. We built the city, region and country, and are currently forced to pay taxes. To that end we, the New Black Panther Party engage in the political process to ensure the proper use of our communities tax dollars and other dollars that were stolen, by whites, from us.

We shall be active in the affairs of the politics of the District, region, and National Government, which impact our people. We will deal with the local city council, regional governments, school boards, ANC’s etc. We shall back strong Black candidates when they meet the Black Agenda test requirements. We encourage political awareness and activity to further the Black agenda. All Black politicians who betray the people must be dealt with. We understand that political power is limited, absent economic power and a true knowledge of self.

We struggle to establish our own provisional government (in unity with other Black organizations), in order take control of our communities and in preparation for our own government soon to come! We advocate political alliances with all African -Black Organizations that are uncompromising in the struggle for liberation. We also will organize with the other oppressed people of color. The New Black Panther Party for Self-Defense is all Black, not integrationist.

We call on Black Police officers to recognize that they are Black men and women first and police officers second. We call on Black police officers to recognize our common enemy who put our people in this condition.

The criminal justice system must be held accountable to the will of our people and not a cruel ex-slave master that desires to see our people continuously incarcerated. Of course, our work is in the jails and prisons where many great brothers and sisters are locked up. We demand immediate freedom for all political prisoners and prisoners of racist political circumstance.

We call for an end to gang violence and an end to Black on Black violence in general. We demand, locally, billions of dollars in reparations specifically for the salvation and education of our young people. Every Black youth or able-bodied person in this city and region should be afforded a proper education and reasonable job at a good wage after the robbery of our people for over 400 years.

Again we must fight gentrification or THE WHITE TAKEOVER of the (CITY). We recognize this as a conspiracy to remove our people, and will fight against it by any means necessary.

Through the BLACK DEFENSE LEAUGE (an OAAU) and call On Black legal organizations, attorneys, Black activists, pastors; preachers; churches; organizations, and leadership of every Black stripe to join with us against the evils of racism, inequality and injustice.
“FREEDOM OR DEATH!”

WE AFFIRM THAT THE GOVERNMENTS, CORPORATIONS AND WHITE PRIVATE CITIZENS OF THE REGION, HAVE WILLFULLY, INTENTIONALLY AND RECKLESSLY ENSLAVED, DISCRIMINATED AGAINST,
ROBBED AND DISFRANCHISED OUR PEOPLE IN COUNTLESS AND INNUMERABLE WAYS. WE AFFIRM THAT THE SAME ENTITIES WEALTH IN THE REGION IS ROOTED IN THE SLAVE TRADE-SYSTEM AND CURRENTLY PROFIT FROM CONTEMPORARY RACISM AND DISENFRANCHISEMENT.

We shall back strong Black candidates when they meet the Black Agenda test requirements. We encourage political awareness and activity to further the Black agenda.

Comment by Hillary All the Way

Well unless Hillary gets the nomination, after all the smear, bait and switch lies and games Obama has used, even stooping to calling the Clintons racist? I am DONE with the Democrats after this and many years as a fighter for this party. I will vote for Nader in November if Obama wins this nomination. Obama and his sleazy supporters will never represent me and the Democratic values I was raised with. Today’s Democrats are useless, clueless, back stabbing, unappreciative, disorganized FOOLS who have vilified the Clintons, our proudest and most successful party representatives. It is time to disassociate with these idiots supporting Obama and the biased Democrat “leaders” running our party into the ground. OBAMA started all the infighting among Dems in ‘07 and his preacher / mentor is a RACIST!! I AM DONE WITH THIS UNETHICAL CUT THROAT PARTY. GO HILLARY!! ALL THE WAY!! DO NOT BACK DOWN!!
