Lincoln didn’t free any slaves in the US.
This excerpt says it well. While I don’t know anything about the website I copied it from, and therefore don’t acknowledge anything about it, this is factual and neutral enough:

“… The Emancipation Proclamation declared, ‘all persons held as slaves within any States, or designated part of the State, the people whereof shall be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.’
“It did not free all slaves in the United States. Rather, it declared free only those slaves living in states not under Union control, e.g., the seceded Confederate States. William Seward, Lincoln’s secretary of state, commented, ‘We show our sympathy with slavery by emancipating slaves where we cannot reach them and holding them in bondage where we can set them free.’
“The proclamation allowed black soldiers to fight for the Union — soldiers that were desperately needed. It also tied the issue of slavery directly to the war.”

So for all you uninformed: the Civil War started at Fort Sumter in April 1861. The Emancipation Proclamation “tied the issue of slavery to the war” in January, 1863 - after it had been raging for more than a year and a half. Union states like Ohio still practiced slavery legally after the war.
We’re past blue-in-the-face (that’s a pun; get it?), and it doesn’t matter anymore. But the fact is and remains: the South’s secession and the Civil War wasn’t about slavery, it was about states’ rights.

I don’t think bashing Obama is going to solve anything. But I do wonder how we will make cash when the stamp is $.41 or a bill is $4.96?

My husband picks up pennies when he sees them on the ground -in parking lots mostly. People don’t really care if they drop a penny! They will bend over to pick up a nickel though.

As far as having Lincoln’s face on the penny - there probably is a coin or bill worth more that would honor Lincoln more.

To the person who said, “A penny saved is a penny earned.” Benjamin Franklin said that. I have tried to save pennies - it took too long to even get to $10.00, so now I save nickels and dimes. Inflation has taken its toll.

One can make light of it, or wait and see what happens. It is an interesting statement.

How can any church that claims to teach Christianity and be grounded on Christ’s teachings present a lifetime achievement award to someone like Louis Farrakhan….someone that considers Hitler to be wickedly great. Given his previous comments against Jews and Israel, I can only conclude that by Obama’s church presenting such an award, its people, its pastor (past and present), and Obama himself are really deceiving the American public. While there is no way to know his heart, his actions (or inaction as it relates to the implicit support for his church and its credo, gives us a glimpse into the real character of Barack Obama. It also magnifies why he wants to reinstate diplomatic ties with Iran and Syria and most likely why he wants to de-commit support for Israel. If Obama’s view of Israel are the same as his pastor and that of Louis Farrakhan and his splinter group, the New Black Panthers, you can see very common threads running among them, not one of Christianity, rather one borne out of militancy.

I strongly urge you to look at these two links and weigh what Obama, his pastor, and those of his church says and does and draw your own conclusions.

If you can read and write, and it’s evident that you can do both, I would say you have the faculties to make that decision on your own accord. The real issue is discernment.

Judge a book not by its cover but by its contents. Judge people not by their appearance but by their actions and deeds. In absence of these things one must look at the decisions they make, to whom they associate, and to whom they seek counsel….discernment enables us to weigh the full context and not merely sound bites and oratory prose.

As for other candidates, I hold them to the same measure…

Lincoln did not unite the country lol…his election set off the civil war…brute force and a half a century of screw ups called recunstruction, followed by another half century of hard, painful civil rights movements (that’s right, there were many…the 60’s were building on the work of many before) united this country…sorta.

Lincoln was very unpopular as a living president, and his vp, who tried to follow his wishes for reunifying the country, was crushed by a vengeful congress. His stand on slavery was…he had no stand…he was a pragmatist, who used the issue of Abolition like any other political tool at his disposal…he famously said that if he could save the union and free the slaves, he would; if he could save the union and free just some of the slaves, he would; and if he could save the union and free none of the slaves, he would.

Lincoln WAS a great leader, but he was no visionary or saint like he is painted to be in high school textbooks.

A new ad by Sen. Obama running in Pennsylvania falsely claims that Sen. Obama does not accept money from the oil industry. In the ad, Sen. Obama says “I’m Barack Obama and I don’t take money from oil companies or lobbyists and I wont let them block change anymore.”

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Sen. Obama has received over $160,000 from the oil and gas companies. Two major bundlers for his campaign — George Kaiser and Robert Cavnar – are oil company CEOs. Sen. Obama has accepted money from Exxon, Shell, BP, Chevron and just about every other major oil company.

In 2005, Sen. Obama voted for the Dick Cheney energy bill, which Cheney wrote in secret with the oil industry. Hillary Clinton opposed Cheney’s energy bill, has a plan to eliminate oil industry tax breaks, and would require oil companies to contribute to a $50 billion strategic energy fund to jumpstart research and investment in clean energy technologies

The hyperintelligent Jay Cost at RearClearPolitics has produced for us a most helpful spreadsheet computing the various popular vote scenarios.

But this paragraph, is, to me, a very crucial point that both Clinton and Obama campaigns would rather ignore:

We have a large number of unknown factors. For many of them, we have very little idea what values they will ultimately take. What we do know is that small changes in several of them could induce large changes in the vote count. This makes it extremely difficult to be as precise as many commentators have been. We need to be wary of all the uncertainty we face here.
So — my fairly conservative calculation has Clinton netting about 446,000 votes between now and June 3. Under all scenarios that exclude Florida and Michigan votes — and count the votes of Washington’s primary — Obama still retains a popular vote lead of not more than 330,000 — or an advantage of less than one and a half percent.

Which scenario is “right?” Under DNC rules, until the credentials committee figures out which delegations to seat, Florida and Michigan do not exist. But the voters in those states certainly do in the existential sense — and if we’re answering the question by figuring out how many Democrats voted for Obama versus how many Democrats voted for Clinton.

Obama supporters will anchor their estimates in the worldview most hospitable to Obama’s nomination, and Clinton’s supporters will similarly find ways to justify including Florida and Michigan before it is DNC-legal to do so.

The media may be called upon to take a stand — especially since the superdelegates tend to listen to the media more than other entities — and the most reasonable answer may well be — well, it depends on who you talk to.

Are there historical precedents? Well, Democrats like to count every vote. So — advantage Hillary? But there has to be some tempering factor to account for Obama’s name not being on the Michigan ballot. Ok, but then there has to be some tempering factor to account for the fact that Obama’s campaign made the decision to stay off the Michigan ballot as least as much because they feared losing the state to Clinton as they wanted to make a statement to Iowans about the integrity of the calendar process. Obama’s campaign also made the strategic decision to contest caucuses; the Clinton campaign dumbly decided to avoid them. If they had spent a comparable amount of money and resources in the caucus states, Obama’s margin of victory would have been lower and he certainly would have less of a delegate lead.

These are all arguments… all persuasive in their own way… and they don’t get me any clearer towards the answering the question about which votes to count and which votes to ignore.

The Obama campaign’s full assault on Hillary is expanding into a full assault on the truth.

The memo the Obama campaign released today is full of blatantly inaccurate information and false innuendo, intended to denigrate Hillary’s critical role in the passage of SCHIP and the Family and Medical Leave Act. Clearly, they believe that the media will overlook the facts and follow another false, trivial story line of their creation.

On SCHIP, Sen. Ted Kennedy said, “The children’s health program wouldn’t be in existence today if we didn’t have Hillary pushing for it from the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue.” At the time of passage in 1997, Sen. Kennedy said, “we pay tribute to Mrs. Clinton. Mrs. Clinton has made the issue of children’s health and well-being her really first priority in this country, and she was of invaluable help, both in the fashioning and the shaping of the program, and also as a clear advocate, in terms of having an effective outcome, during the discussion and the debate on the children’s health issue.”

Factcheck.org says “Despite disparagement from political rivals, we find she deserves ample credit for expanding children’s health insurance.” More facts HERE.

On FMLA, Debra Ness, President of the National Partnership for Women and Families, the organization that worked for years on the issue, said “Hillary was instrumental in getting the Family and Medical Leave Act signed into law…Hillary brought her work and experience on behalf of children and working families to the campaign trail in 1991 and 1992 and knew the importance of getting this legislation passed immediately.” More facts HERE.

I’m glad I didn’t waste any more time on this blog than this one comment. McCain Man, you and your fellow racists are why this country still has a major problem.

What is it with this stupid idea that if I don’t support Obama I’m a racist…I am from upstate NY…Hillary has come to our area on many occasions, not just when running for office, and she has done alot to try to help us…alot more than our state and local govs, who are taxing us into oblivion…the additions to bills that she has made were very specific to our needs, and showed that she really did her homework to serve her constituants…bet you didn’t know how important the dairy industry is to upstate NY…well, she did before she even finished moving in and her moves on that matter and many others were effective.
She gets made fun of for the whole woodstock museam (sp), but did anyone bother to notice that that area is dying, and the added tourism would have greatly benifitted her constituants? Nope, we just get hippie jokes.
Hillary could have done like every other politition in this state and just focused on the NYC area and she would have been re-elected just fine…but she chose to do her job and represent everybody instead…and did it in a focused effective manner, instead of just throwing money around and saying ‘look at me!”

I needed a good laugh

Well, I am still undecided, so take this for what it’s worth. I am having a hard time because I feel like all three of these candidates have messed up. I mean, I don’t want our soldiers to have to continue doing what they’re doing, and McCain just seems like he is all about war, regardless of where it is. Then you’ve got Hillary, who, well, frankly has proven that she lies as well as she does other things. And then there’s Obama. I’m not gullible or foolish enough to believe all the malicious rumors, but I also can’t seem to grasp the idea of an honest politician.
