Romney downplays VP talk aboard McCain’s plane

Denver, CO — Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney downplayed speculation about being a possible Vice Presidential pick Thursday during a media availability aboard Sen. McCain’s campaign plane.

“I really don’t think there’s much interest in that on the part of the electorate at this point. It’s way early,” Romney told reporters during a flight from Salt Lake City to Denver–where he is accompanying McCain to multiple fundraisers. “You know, there are probably 20 and maybe even more…people who I think could be excellent Vice-Presidential nominees from our party and that’s a process the Senator will probably carry out. I am not going to engage in the sort of speculation on that.”

The press availability came after a press conference in Salt Lake City where the two men were joined by another potential VP, Utah Governor Jon Huntsman.

Asked what it feels like to be back out on the trail, Romney said, “it’s kind of fun again. It’s nice not to feel any pressure at all. I don’t have to worry about goofing up. I can just stand behind my nominee and do my very best to support his campaign.”

No need to decide on vp at this time … election is still 8 months away.

Words out that Condi Rice has an interest in the VP spot. I wonder what Don Imus would say to that?

It would benefit John McCain greatly if he announced his presidential ticket right away while Democrats are still slugging it out with each other.

Choosing Mitt Romney would appease the talk show hosts, add financial expertise to the ticket, add the vigor of a younger man with a presidential bearing who could take over if McCain falters, and rally conservatives.

Do it now and the public would soon see those two looking noble and doing and saying the things presidents do. To watch the McCain/Romney team going about expressing what’s best for America in a time of war would make an indelible impression on the public mind; especially when Democrats are still slinging mud at each other and figuring out how to fix their self-created dilemmas.

And McCain/Romney might bring some excitement back to the GOP campaign!

Announce Dr. Romney for the McCain/Romney presidential ticket today and Democrats might never recover…

If John were to pick his nominee soon it would show the country how our party is united, while the democrats continue to try and self-destruct.

Mitt would be a very solid choice for VP, and would add to the ticket.

Go McCain/Romney ‘08

Romney supported raising various fees by more than $300 million, including raising fees for driver’s licenses, marriage licenses, and gun licenses. Romney increased the state gasoline tax by 2 cents per gallon, generating about $60 million per year in additional tax revenue. On April 2, 2006, Romney signed the Massachusetts health reform law which requires nearly all Massachusetts residents to buy health insurance coverage or else face a substantial penalty in the form of an additional income tax assessment.
In May 2004 Romney instructed town clerks to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Romney was filmed participating in a Pro-Choice Planned Parenthood fundraiser in 1994 in conjunction with a $150 family contribution, and has made many pro-choice comments in the past, but he now says that he has “acknowledged my error” and is pro-life Romney has been a strong supporter of gun control legislation and enforcement, backing the Brady Bill, a five-day waiting period on gun sales, and a ban on certain assault weapons, and he still backs the ban on assault weapons. Romney recently flipped his position and now says he believes that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to keep and bear arms, rather than merely protecting a right of states.
U.S. Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts once said, “The real Romney is clearly an extraordinarily ambitious man with no perceivable political principle whatsoever. He is the most intellectually dishonest human being in the history of politics,”

HUNTER CALLS ON ROMNEY TO OPPOSE BAIN PARTNERSHIP WITH CHINESE COMPANY

HUNTER CALLS ON ROMNEY TO OPPOSE BAIN PARTNERSHIP WITH CHINESE COMPANY

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 2, 2007

“I am extremely concerned that Governor Romney’s company would tout a highly suspect Chinese corporation as a strategic partner,” stated Hunter. “Forming a business partnership with a corporation known to have direct ties with terrorists and dictators while, at the same time, openly seeking to acquire a major U.S. corporation that performs vital cyber security work for the Department of Defense, can only be characterized as irresponsible.”

A resolution has been introduced in Congress, H.Res. 730, which states; “The preponderance of publicly available evidence clearly suggests that as currently structured, the proposed transaction involving Huawei threatens the national security of the United States and should not be approved by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States .” A copy of this resolution is provided.

Hunter stated in his letter to Governor Romney, “…while it is true that you no longer control Bain Capital, the contributions you have received from its principals as its founding member indicate that your influence within the company remains strong.

“Further, while the Committee on Foreign Investment has yet to rule on the Huawei transaction, this corporation’s connection to Saddam Hussein, the Taliban and the Army of Communist China should clearly disqualify them from becoming, in the words of your former company, “a strategic partner” in acquiring a U.S. firm such as 3COM, which performs vital cyber-security work for the U.S. Department of Defense.

“This letter is a request that you immediately issue a statement of policy that this transaction should be terminated on the grounds of national security. Please let me know what you intend to do.”

A copy of Congressman Hunter’s letter, as well as two articles regarding Huawei acquisition efforts are provided. Media are encouraged to contact Gary Becks at (619) 334-1655 for additional information or to arrange an interview with Hunter.

Romney-McCain ‘Dirty Tricks’ Calls Dispute Builds

Share January 07, 2008 8:53 AM

Justin Rood Reports:

New Hampshire’s top prosecutor is pushing to discover the identity of the funder behind alleged “dirty tricks” phone calls that hit Republican voters in the state last November. Meanwhile, campaigns for the two candidates named in the calls blamed the other for the operation.

New Hampshire Attorney General Kelly A. Ayotte made a public plea for information about the matter Thursday, after a polling company allegedly involved in the affair rebuffed a state subpoena for information.

“The voters of New Hampshire deserve to know whether any presidential candidate violated New Hampshire’s law,” Ayotte said in a statement released to the media.

The 20-minute phone calls reportedly sounded at first like a traditional poll, but led to a series of questions portraying Romney and his Mormon faith in a harsh light. The calls also reportedly portrayed rival GOP presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain, Ariz., in a positive light.

McCain asked Ayotte to investigate the calls last November and called them “disgraceful” and “outrageous.” Romney also asked for an investigation into the calls, which have been characterized as “push polls,” or quasi-polls designed to “push” a negative portrayal of a candidate, not gather data.

The two campaigns have pointed fingers at each other over the calls. On Thursday, McCain campaign official Chuck Douglas said, “We have long suspected” that Romney had funded the calls “to test the Mormon issue.” Romney’s camp, which has reportedly blamed McCain’s campaign finance reform legislation for making the calls possible, said those comments were “outrageous and irresponsible” and said Douglas should quit McCain’s campaign. Douglas later said he was speaking for himself and not the campaign.

Attorney General Ayotte said Thursday the calls were made by a Utah-based Republican telemarketing company, Western Wats, which had been hired by Moore Information, a GOP polling firm in Oregon.

Comment by Flip Flopper

By Glen Johnson, AP Political Writer | March 9, 2007

BOSTON –A group of Massachusetts Republicans is planning to launch a Web site on Monday that highlights flip-flops in the record of their former leader, presidential contender Mitt Romney.

He has acknowledged changing from a supporter of abortion rights to an opponent, and recently signed a no-new-taxes pledge that his gubernatorial spokesman had previously labeled “gimmickry.” During a 1994 Senate race, Romney also pledged to be more effective in fighting for gay rights than his opponent, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., although today Romney highlights his ardent opposition to gay marriage.

“I think he’s trying to reinvent himself as a candidate,” said Holly Robichaud, one of the site’s organizers. “If that’s what he wants to do, that’s fine. We just want to tell people his entire record. It’s up to the voters to decide if he’s trustworthy on the issues.”

I have been observing these presidential campaigns for quite a while now. Hearing and seeing what’s going on to both GOP and DNC candidates… And watching how they responded to some charges and allegations on each one of them - makes me feel proud as an American!! Because scrutinizing each candidates to make sure tha they do have all the nescessary attributes to be a good president really showed how much we loved this country as citizens.

FOR BEING INVOLVED AND FOR AIRING OUR OPINIONS - as to who should be the right person to be the Commander in Chief that would represent all of us with all of our great values as Americans to world countries is showing great PATRIOTISM!!!

Aspiring to preside over a great country like ours is a courageous act of an individual knowing that this is a very tough, demanding, if not the most challenging job in the wholeworld.

I’m just hoping as a regular citizen of this wonderful country that who ever get the nod of the citizenry and elected President will be willing to put the country’s and its citizens interests first above his/her own.

May God hands guides and directs all of us in choosing the best fit to this NOBLE CALLING!!!

MAY GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!!

I THINK WE ARE BOTH READY TO HAVE A BLACK OR A WOMAN PRESIDENT!!!

Not a solid choice to put Romney on the ticket. Everyone can see how Obama’s nebulous past has destroyed his chances for President. I don’t want the Democrats to bring out Romney’s past liberal record as a Governor. It may not fly for the ticket. There are better choices.

Politicians can and do say all sorts of things that they later flip on. As far as credentials are concerned, Romney is far and away the most accomplished invidiual to run for president in recent memory. As far as him being a “flip flopper”, that is nonsense. He has flipped on less issues than the other three people in the race. I would love to have Romney doing anything for our government, as I am sure it would help reduce government waste. I’m not sure if McCain is worthy of Romney’s help, but if Romney can stoop to run on McCain’s ticket, McCain would be a fool not to take it.

We cannot leave an oil rich country to a bunch of terrorists, how long before they buy a nuclear bomb or Iran may have one already. Then terrorists on our own land again, blowing up civilians. If George h. w. Comment by Holly

Thanks Chad, I like it alot better when we the people can agree, rather than all the hateful stuff that some people say and do on here .

Comment by Mark

Holly, great point, being a concerned American is first on my mind before party affiliation. I do know Obama would be terrible especially when I heard the negative aspect about Israel from what he calls a place of worship. Please, his words are not fooling me and I hope the rest of Americans start to see this man for who he is. McCain/Romney will make a great ticket because McCain is strong on national defense and Romney can bring in the economic side that is a little weak. I would not worry too much about the flip flop of Romney because he at least has provided reasons behind him changing his mind. Hillary just makes stuff up which by the time her and Obama finish there will be plenty of beef to knock her out. As for Obama, just show him and his wife’s true beliefs and their radical way of thinking and his plans without any support and he will be knock off if his party cannot see he does not stand a chance. Obama has not even begun to see the clips from the institution that he prays and worships. This is the kind of stuff that happens when they brainwash terrorist. Oh well, enough, I think John should pick his running mate and start cross country campaigning now while the rest beat each other up that way he could get some of that media press.

Comment by Mark

Rice would be a very good running mate and if she is interested then he should just pick one and start laying out his plan across the nations talking to as many as possible while the rest try to figure out what they will do. This could be the chance that McCain could separate himself from the group and bring over those who hate the way the Democrat party is behaving with their lies, anti-America worship etc too much to mention. McCain needs to share his life story and then many Americans from both parties will see that at this time, he is the only one who could get anything accomplished both at home and throughout the world. God Bless America

Comment by Holly

Mark thanks, you make some great points, Obama scares me since his skeltons started to fall out of the closet, his change is not for America.Hillary I just don’t feel is strong enough to handel the job nor very truthful. Are you the same Mark I talked to last night,Are you in Iraq?

I wonder who Obama or Hillary would choose. Oh, thats right. The dem. elites tell them who to choose. Kennedy hated Johnson but was forced into him. Why? for the TX vote of course.
Leaving Iraq too soon would be devasting. Not only to the Iraquis but the whole region. The surrounding countries don’t want us to leave. We have had troops in Kuwait since 91. At their invitation. We better do something about Iran before its too late. There will be a heck of a lot more Americans and everything else if they are let loose.
