Clinton Gears Up For Carolina Re-do
Hillary Clinton makes her first campaign stop in North Carolina today, kicking off a 6-day “Solutions for the American Economy” tour in Raleigh with a speech outlining a new $12.5 billion job retraining agenda.
The state, which votes two weeks after Clinton must-win Pennsylvania, presents a challenge for Hillary’s campaign. Advisers note that the demographics are similar to its neighbor to the south, where the campaign took a monumental beating at the hands of Barack Obama.
Spokesman Mo Elleithee concedes that the state represents “a bit of an uphill battle,” but says the senator expect to compete and win her share of delegates. The campaign is still ramping up its North Carolina operation, adding staff and offices in major cities acros the state; the Raleigh office opens tomorrow.

Sometimes the phone rings at 3am in the White House and it’s an economic crisis. And we need a president who is ready and willing to answer that call. But I read Senator McCain’s plan which does virtually nothing to ease the credit crisis or the housing crisis. The phone is ringing and he would just let it ring and ring.
Senator McCain is a friend of mine but he said himself, “The issue of economics is not something I’ve understood as well as I should.” He’d rather ignore the credit crisis and mortgage crisis – or blame middle class families instead of offering solutions on their behalf.
We’ve had enough of a president who didn’t know enough about economics, and didn’t do enough for the middle class. I don’t think we can afford four more years. I believe we have to answer the call and act aggressively to deal with the housing and credit crises. That’s the kind of president we need after eight years of George Bush.
While we are fighting to create jobs, and keep them here in America, today I’m announcing that I will commit $2.5 billion each year to help workers train for new jobs and improve their skills for their existing jobs as well.
We are competing in a new global economy, but our policies to equip American worker for the twenty-first century are stuck back in the twentieth. When it comes to retraining assistance, our government is more focused on how you lost your job than how you can find a new one. And while we have been rightly focused on trying to help people who are out of work, there’s been too little thought and effort to help people gain new skills while they still have their existing jobs – so they can move up or move on to higher-wage positions.
I will make Universal Worker Adjustment Assistance available to every single dislocated worker. No American should feel left behind – if you are willing to work hard and retrain, we’ll reward your hard work with help getting trained, finding a new job, and making the adjustment to a new field or industry.
We’ll also create new tools and options for you to get job skills or a college education while working. You shouldn’t have to produce a pink slip to get help training for a new, higher-paying job. I’ll create Pell Grants that people can use to retrain and attend college while working.
And the government should not wait until it’s too late to act. I am proposing an innovative new program. It’s called “The Pre-emptive Training Initiative.” When a factory closes its doors, or a plant moves overseas, that’s a shock for families – and for whole communities. We shouldn’t wait until the lock is placed on the gates to recognize the problem.

Obama $4000 college credit as long as you do commundity service is rediculous. For one the community service may not be in your own community and two one could get a part time job and earn more than the $4000.00 credit would earn them for working more hours to serve who Obama wants you to serve. Sorry it is quite clear what he is proposing on our young college folks, serve our poor for free and we will give you small credit. I would much prefer the Clinton proposal for a lower college federal loan rate and college credit and work part time and earn fall more than Obama smoke screen proposal. Most importantly I would not send my son or daughter into a area of commundity service for a small $4000 credit.

Never watch TV, had never seen/heard Obama speak. Although the print media obviously favors him greatly, from all I’d read of his ‘ideas,’ could never understand why he is so popular. And the slogans rang hollow. Saw Obama speak for the first time yesterday. Felt as if I were watching a late-night infomercial, complete with folks in the background nodding and shaking their heads on cue, in that odd informercial manner.

Pair that with McCain being the best possible Repug, viewed favorably by a great deal of Independents, and you have the makings of a monumental whoppin’ on Hillary.
Obama is the Dem’s only chance, but I doubt he’ll win now either with the predictable sanctimony of enough white Americans, outraged that some in the black community are actually angry about a protracted history of oppression and discrimination that resides today in the form of a large, lingering socio-economic disparity.
Hope everyone enjoys the blessings of the 2-term Bush years, because we’re about to buy another 4 years of it. The only upside of a McCain administration is he at least appears to have an above-average IQ.

Oh I don’t know Katherine. I think that’s a little low. She is certainly behind the 8 ball right now for sure but IF she can get Michigan and Florida counted she’ll cut Obama’s lead to a whopping 7 delegates. They’ll split PA and NC and then it comes to Indiana which is generally considered to favior Obama but not by much. IF she pulls off an upset in Indiana she’s in very good shape because she’ll take West Virginia and Kentucky too…maybe even Oregon. Now those are two huge IFs I will admit but if she can pull them off she’ll have more delegates than Obama heading to the convention and at that point she has a very legitimate argument for getting the nomination.
Frankly all she has to to is remain within 102 delegates of Obama and she will be able to argue to the Superdelegates that while the counted delegates favor Obama the real will of the people would favor her because of Florida and Michigan.
It is very obvious that some Americans have forgot what the Clinton administration has already done to America. If there is a spin in this campaign it certainly has not been proven by Mr. Obama’s past but by the Clinton clan. To make things worse they have put there daughter in with them. Mr. Obama offers a new, fresh approach………..a change from our traditional Government!

I have vote both Republican and Democrat in my time and feel that each American has a right to choose. So yes there has been times I have drank “koolaide” and yes I am sometimes a liberalist, I also consider myself a Conservative Republican at times. I feel it is your right to vote for a person who you choose is the best candidate.
I don’t agree with John McCain on several issues but I certainly feel he deserves respect.
I don’t agree with Hillary Clinton but as a former first lady and a Senator. I feel she deserves my respect.
Now as far as Obama, I can not show him my respect because he has choosen to conduct himself in a way I feel that will not “unite this country” but divide it. I feel he has choosen a path to follow a church that teaches racism and to associate himself with Rev Wright, Louis F and Odinga Obama who have all said things that I feel are Anti-American. His wife has also spouted disrespect to our Country. His association with the weatherman and/or Bill Ayers, Resko etc etc. I can not vote for him because I no longer has respect for him. My country, my fellow American weather they are white, black, red or brown are important and deserve fair and EQUAL treatment, no more for one than the other as we are all Americans. Well not exactly. The Koran actually has high praise for Jesus, and Mohommad considered Jesus a prophet of Allah. Mohommad was bothered however that Christians did not live the faith they professed and as such he considered them hypocrites. Like the Bible, the Koran has its contradictions as well but there are more than just a few passages in the Koran that give Jesus his props so to speak. More accurate might be to say that Islam is not anti-Christ but anti-Christian and even that may be open for debate to some degree.

A great leader with conscience and courage would have stood up and faced down Rev. Wright who engages in such bigoted conduct. I expect a president of the United States to have the strength of character to denounce and disown enemies of America — foreign and domestic — and yes, even his friends and confidants when they get seriously out of line.
What if a minister in a church attended primarily by white congregants or a rabbi in a synagogue attended primarily by Jews made comparable statements that were hostile to African-Americans? I have no doubt that the congregants would have immediately stood up and openly denounced the offending cleric.
Others would have criticized that cleric in private. Some would surely have ended their relationships with their congregation. Obama didn’t do any of these things. His recent condemnations of Wright’s hate-filled speech are, in my opinion, a case of too little, too late.
I am confused by all the people who speak this “unite the country” lexicon. Who or what do you consider to be “the country?” Are you only talking about the “majority” or are the rest of us invited to the party? Is this only a battle between white dems and republicans; or are people of color included?
If we are claiming to be the “leader of the free world” isn’t the last word in that phrase WORLD?

These dispirited views are obviously disappointing, but how can large numbers of people believe these things? What is the impact of the feelings that others are out to get them on people’s desire to improve themselves?
In a truly courageous act, Larry Elder’s book “Stupid Black Men” rips into the festering sore of what passes as discussions these days about race. Elder confronts the “I-am-a-victim” attitude that corrupts people’s sense of self-confidence and causes them to interpret the everyday difficulties people face in life through a prism of racial animosity.
People get so wrapped up in past traumas of what they are owed that they can’t focus on the opportunities available.
Politicians constantly make righting the wrongs of discrimination the central core of their message to black voters. Elder says that Democrats need black people to be angry and constantly feel aggrieved to keep 90 percent of them voting for Democrats.
Republicans are actually more in-sync with black views on issues from vouchers for schooling, crime, abortion, illegal immigration, but many blacks would never vote for Republicans because of their perception of rampant racism by Republicans.
Yet, as Elder shows, the irony is that Republicans are eight percentage points more likely than Democrats to vote for a black or a woman or a Mormon or a 72-year-old for president.
In a book that often seems clairvoyant given the events involving the Obama campaign and the Rev. Jeremiah Wright during the last couple of weeks, the double standard seems to be everywhere.
For example, Elder points out that Obama was the only presidential candidate last year to call for Don Imus to be fired for his stupid comment about “nappy headed ho’s.” To Obama, Imus “didn’t just cross the line. He fed into some of the worst stereotypes that my two young daughters are having to deal with today in America” and that if Imus worked for Obama he would be fired.
There was no discussion that these were just a few off the cuff stupid words in a long career.
Elder’s book helps me understand why Obama would join Wright’s church with its emphasis on black liberation theology to help protect him from blacks who could feel that he would challenge the victimization culture and the view that government is necessary to rescue blacks.
Obama at times is given credit for saying “don’t expect government to solve all their problems,” though it is hard to actually find an issue where that old approach doesn’t apply.
As someone who knew Obama for a little while — we were both at the University of Chicago — it has been hard to recognize the person that I knew from the one portrayed in the campaign. The person that I knew was not one who sought to build bridges with those he disagreed.
Academia is overwhelmingly filled with liberals and many even to the left of that, but most liberal academics enjoy arguing with those whom they disagree with. Debate and discussion over lunch and in the halls is what makes academia a fun place to be.
But Obama was not like that.
Possibly it was his anger over our differences over the gun issue or a broader anger with those with whom he disagreed, but attempts to engage in discussions ended with a stern looks and a turned back. That was true whether I met him at school or someplace else. There was anger there.
Like Larry Elder’s family, many blacks can point to experiences that they could let consume them with anger, real or imagined, but that obsession only harms themselves and those blacks who are trying to make their lives better. Hopefully, Elder’s book can get across the message that the vast majority of people really want them to succeed
