McCain claims Dems are in denial about Iraq

Chula Vista, CA– Sen. John McCain slammed his Democratic rivals Monday for their continued calls for withdrawal from Iraq despite what he says is clear evidence that the effort on the ground is succeeding.

Citing an audio tape released last week by Osama bin Laden in which the terrorist leader stressed the importance of an al Qaeda victory in Iraq, the presumptive GOP nominee said Sens. Obama and Clinton “refuse to understand what’s being said and what’s happening.”

“General Petraeus is correct when he says that the central battle ground in the struggle against Al Qaeda is Iraq and Osama Bin Laden just confirmed that,” McCain told about 200 attendees at a town hall meeting in Chula Vista—his first since returning from a week-long trip to the region. “So General Petraeus and I and Osama Bin Laden are in agreement. It is hard to understand why Senator Clinton and Senator Obama do not understand that. I don’t know if its naïveté or what the problem is, but it’s obvious that they are dead wrong and they are wrong when they say we should leave Iraq immediately.”

In a tape first aired by al-Jazeera Thursday, bin Laden said that “Iraq is the Jihad theater that would lead to the liberation of Palestine. The Jihad in Iraq should be supported in order to liberate Palestine.”

McCain lauded progress he said he witnessed on the ground in Iraq last week, adding that it shows “the surge is succeeding and it’s time that (Democrats) acknowledged that the surge is succeeding and the benefits of success in Iraq will spread through the Middle East, including a stable society, a stable government, a bastion of Democracy–flawed but functioning.”

The Democratic National Committee was quick to respond this afternoon, attempting to draw a distinction between McCain and Petraeus. Noting that while the top American General said last week that “Iraqi leaders have failed to take advantage of a reduction in violence to make adequate progress toward resolving their political differences,” McCain failed to put any pressure on the Iraqi government during his visit, said DNC Communications Director Karen Finney.

“McCain continues his pattern of parroting the Bush Administration’s misleading rhetoric on the war. General Petraeus was right to point out that Iraq’s leaders have not made the political progress the surge was supposed to make possible, yet John McCain’s only plan for Iraq is 100 years of President Bush’s open-ended commitment to a failed strategy,” Finney said. “The brave soldiers fighting in Iraq don’t need another Republican president who talks about trusting General Petraeus then ignores his advice.”

God bless our all VOLUNTEER military. They fight, so you don’t have to! My respect and prayers go out to all our forces and their families. Please support anyone you know who is serving, adopt a servicemember or a military family in your area. Our servicemembers love to recieve surprise packages and correspondence. Go to us.gov(search military support) or redcross.org, americasupportsyou.mil, soldiersangels.com. I would like to invite any educator, with parental permission, to have your class draw pictures or write notes and then send them to our troops via one of the organizations mentioned above.

One thing that is really appreciarted by the troops is Calling Cards so that they can check on the family back home. I have been working with my son the Combat Medic’s son on his school work for the past several months. It is important for him to hear it from Dad as well as Grandpa about what needs to be done. Also Joshua’s youngest just turned 2. He doesn’t have many real memories of day besides the voice on the other end of the phone.

On weekends, the camp has it set up so that the soldiers can use PCs with cameras to see the family over webcam. It is not at all as good as real life, but I guaranty that there is plenty of love going out over the lines.

God Bless America. And God Bless Our Troops!!!!

Vote for McCain! He is the only one who understands the danger we face from the islamic nuts who want to rule the world! Only McCain has the courage to stare down these savages and defeat them. Obama and Hillary will just run to the U.N. and ask for more peace talks and concessions to militant islam. Support our troops and vote McCain!! McCain will ensure our national security and defense remains priority number one! If we suffer another attack from these islamic militants we’ll have much more than just our economic security to worry about.

I wanted to separate this debate point from what I hope would be an uncontroversial request for sending phone cards to the troops. They are not allowed to have cell phones because the signals can be tracked. Once again, I have skin in the skin. My oldest son is over there as a Combat Medic on Convoy Support Duty. The Convoy get shot he is the one running towards the blast. My son in law just returned from his first tour of duty in Iraq. He was a Combat Infantry Scout driving around in a Humvee. He got into several fire fights. One terrible night he had two of the four people in his Humvee get eliminated during a hot fire fight. I am a Vietnam Era Veteran, and my Father is a 30% Service Connected Disability Veteran living in my house since he cannot take care of himself.

In my church job, I experience the difficulty of trying to find suitable employment for somebody that can drop you from a mile away– not much call for it in the states — at least until us Coloradoans get back to the series. We need to ratchet it up a notch and that needs to be on the table.

I do not think that the Democrats really understand about what is going on over in Iraq. First a quick history tour. This history includes personal insights by my Mother in Law — Born 1932 Hanover, and my Father in Law Born 1931 Breslau Germany — now named Wroclaw Poland.

World War II in Europe largely ended on May 7, 1945 VE Day, could be referred to today as “Mission Accomplished Europe”. However, it was not until 10 years later on May 7, 1955 that West Germany got up and running as a fully independent internationally functioning nation state.

At the beginning of the interim the people who just wanted to get their lives back into a semblance of order faced the humiliation of armed occupation made necessary by wolf hound units that prowled the South of Germany. You cooperated with the allies; you faced death by members of this squad. In many of the towns it was hard to find mayors as the first ones were hung up by piano wire.

Slowly over a period of 4 years, Konrad Adenauer was able to piece together the beginnings of a government which assumed limited local control in 1949. Getting this established helped set off the Berlin Air Lift. Finally, by 1953 almost all of the functions of an inside looking nations state were running. Adenauer was able to negotiate the last prisoners of war being released by 1953. My wife’s grandfather did not get released until 1949.

Then on May 7, 1955 Conrad Adenauer accepted his role as the first Premier as the fully independent West German Government leader.

Folks that road took 10 long years, but if you look at West Germany, they showed time after time that they were a good ally during the cold war.

I will be happy to discuss any disputed parts of the above timeline.

Moving forward to Iraq. Hillary says that she is going to start withdrawing troops from Iraq on January 20, 2009. Well if you use West Germany as the model for Nation Building, that is approximately 6 years past what might have been called the “Mission Accomplished” date prematurely.

Right about now we would be proudly getting past the Berlin Airlift Stage of Government Building. The Military Surge has largely accomplished its purpose and it needs to now step into support operations of the Iraqi Military.

I will agree with any and all posters that we need to get somebody over there from the State Department that is even 75% as Good as General Petreus to move this war from an armed incursion to an onsight joint operation to ensure having friendly troops in the area.

Using the German History it looks like we might have 5 to 6 years more work in building a country in Iraq. If so, it will be the first such country with clean running water in most villiages and new schoolrooms. Do not misunderstand this last point. Joshua is helping dozens of villiages with their public health. Jack is working with his Humvee buddies building sinter block buildings. The designs are simple. Using advanced filtration to clean and purify formerly unusable stream water.

If my two kids and their buddies I talk to are not the biggest liars in the world, we are building up some major friendship in the little villages around Iraq, including some friends that we have coming on board in what was formerly called the Tikrit Circle.

If Iran continues to fall apart, the huge friendships we are building in Iraq, Kuwait, UAR, Quater, etc. will serve immeasurable benefits in the years to come. How would you like to have an unstable Iraq fighting a well financed prepared Persia? Where would w launch from? The Suez would be a death trap!! The straits of Hormuz could also serve as a bottle neck trap.

Afghanistan is not as well going as Iraq. We need to put more boys into the ground to restart building up our relationships. That way we can have a firm friend for fighting either Iran or a newly belligerent Russia.

This scenario would be counter played to the likely scenario if Hillary’s January 20, 2009 pullout remains her policy in the election. I can see it now. The first screen would have her citing that date as the beginning of the Iraq Pullout. Next the screen would split showing the Airlift off of the Embassy in Saigon. The voice over would point out that Hillary’s plan has already been tried — in my war. The ill timed ill advised surrender that we did in South Vietnam doomed at least 50,000 South Vietnamese Patriots who were helping our side out. What do you think would happen to the Iraqis we leave behind? Exactly no more head!!! One of my interns was a fellow by the name of John Tran. He was from one of the boat people that left South Vietnam 20 years before he came to me for grooming. It was weird, but I did my best and got him promoted in our company. He then got snatched up by a large New York Company.

Finally, and I know this was a long post, there is the cost of energy to think about. If we leave Iraq, Saudi Arabia will fall just as sure as I am typing this. We would be looking at $10 per gallon gasoline.

Let Mr.McCain list all the Gains due to US invasion of Iraq and I will list the losses US has incurred during this period.Let the American people decide for themselves.

“McCain failed to put any pressure on the Iraqi government during his visit, said DNC Communications Director Karen Finney. ”
_______________________________________

Maybe this is why our foreign policy is in such a mess, if the Democratic Senators think (like apparently the DNC does) they should unilaterally attempt to influence foreign governments. Wouldn’t this usurp the role of our State Department in its efforts to carry out the policies of the President of the United States? Whether a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee OR pre-sumptive Presidential nominee, I don’t think he should have attempted any pressures and am glad he did not!

Comment by the southern dem

Of course the dems are in denial McCain states the obvious!!….Why have not Obama and H Clinton gone over to iraq recently and with a number of trips to see for themselves the accumulated improvements??…….NO THAT WILL NOT HAPPEN their too busy, they really do notr want to see!!……….THEY WOULD BE FOUND OUT TO BE THE FRAUDS THEY ARE!!! I’m not going to tell you that Bagdad is New York City, however, there has been demonstrated a significant improvement over time that is catching hold. No one could have expected that a complete change would occur overnight given as long as Sadam had his foot over the population (Bush mistake).

Now I am not going to tell anyone that things could not have been handled better and for that Bush is faulted but THE BIG PICTURE must be taken into consideration and JUST GIVING UP really is not an option. I believe the dems Obama and Clinton are making a huge mistake not only signaling to our enemies that there is no backbone but also the enslavement of 20+ million would look so bad to the rest of the world that it would change the course of middle east relationships for the next many decades. This is exactly what the dems desire to do….stick it in the eye of anything republican to ensure that they never consider any similar action in the future. Like Obama and Clinton are demonstrating now…”eating their young” evidenced well during this ongoing dems primary campaign….there is nothing either of them would do to push the far left political agenda.

Just imagine how are dems going to explain the extreme contradiction between the issue of concerns about slavery from our past and the enslavement of the millions of Iraq citizens to thugs, murders and religious nuts; such would represent a real smear on the reputation of the USA. Sadam did everything he could to push the falsehood that there were WMDs so was the US responsible for such an internal deception….surprise, surprise… none were found. We still do not know what was shipped to Syria.

The selective visual capability of various democrates which is most evident in Obama and H Clinto do in my opinion a great disservice to the nation as a whole. Never would I have thought that in this most critical time that such political diatribe would be so aggressive in just a surrender. Such a degree of political blindness creates such significant divisions within the population that trying to accomplish anything of substance is near zero. Imagine if there was no support for the military at all…how many people would volunter to serve. It would be the beginning of the end for the military…..maybe that is the ultimate goal here.

The US can not put it’s head in the sand and just say… I see nothing, I hear nothing…. therefore the threat must not be there!! Playing politics goes only so far but with the left it knows no bounds. Yes, 4000 have been lost and I grief for them as I do for all soldiers lost in the current and past wars……however, to simply walk away from people who truely require our help and assistance would be the worst ever imaginable decision. The dems seem to try to out do each other in this regard!!

McCain is being nice about it.

What is happening is far worse than simple denial.

The behavior of the Dems on the hill is driven by a lust for control and power and an irrational hatred for Bush.

The former is the greater problem.

The Dems are almost completely invested in the US losing in Iraq and pulling out in disgrace. They spent the better part of the last two years screeching that we had lost, introducing bill after bill attempting to undercut the troops, the mission and the administration.

Murtha publicly labels our marines as murderers, and they are exonerated. Reid publicly and loudly states that the war is lost. Pelosi hammers ceaselessly against the war.

All until the surge begins to show results that even a jerk like Kucinich has to acknowledge.

Suddenly, the war is off the front pages. It is off the radar screen. The liberal press has lost the club it uses to beat the administration.

And now, we are how many days without a FISA bill?

What is happening here is tantamount to treason. These scum on hill are playing politics with national security. They are so intent on gaining the White House and gaining control of foreign policy that they willingly subvert our security so WE WILL LOSE.

If we lose this war, the DEMS WIN.

Ari,

You are right and wrong. You need to focus on the post-war, not the war itself. The parallels are there. The wolfpacks can be equated with the terrorist cells. Iran and Syria can be equated with the USSR and satellites.

On the other hand, the religious/social situation is as you say, very complex. Add to this the fact that Germany had some experience with constitutional democracy between the wars.

I think his estimate of 10 years is too short. It will probably take 15 to 20 years from Iraq to stabilize to the point we can leave. Provided the Dems keep their idiot fingers out of the pie.

Ari,

You are either naive or slanted. There is absolutely no question that both the “mainstream” US and European media opposed the Iraq war from the star. They have done everything they can to bring the absolute worst points into America’s living room and have done everything they can to prevent the public from seeing any of the positive results.

This is an absolute that cannot be denied or avoided. The PRESS IS LIBERAL and they support anything and everything that can harm conservatives, the current administration, the war effort, security efforts, etc.

Say what you will, call me what you like. I was here when the tide shifted. I watched the media become the senior marketing partner of the Democrat party in the 1960’s. It started i the md to late 50’s and just kept going.

If you cannot accept that the media practice advocate journalism at nearly every turn, you will NEVER understand the dynamics of world political reality. What you read and see in the mainstream press is only a tiny part of the reality of our world.

Given time, I could point you at literally hundreds of stories that were twisted and warped by the press to shape US public opinion in the manner the editorial staff wanted.

Dems have a failed policy at everything they mention. Iraqi would be the biggest mistake of their policies they are putting forward and would cause more American blood shed down the road if we pull out before they can stand on their own. Who ever said that starting a democracy from scratch only takes a few years? We are the oldest democracy and we are still trying to get things to work.

Just as our military is stationed all over the world in many different countries where we have shed our blood to help provide freedom to other nations we should remain in Iraqi and implement a sofa agreements with them letting the region and others know that they have our support for wanting a better life and that can only benefit the United States in the long run just as many other countries have provided us in the past.

Dems do not have a clue about looking outside the box and visualizing what a free and stable Iraqi would do in the future in an area of such turmoil. Dems think that just because we are there they think we will always be fighting. Shows you have much they know about their own military. We have been in South Korea and Japan and many other nations for over 50 years and I cannot remember when was the last time I heard of someone getting shot or in the least, shot at, let’s see, “never” and if they think it will stay the way it is now or the past, they need to go back to school.

There are more American citizens that are getting killed by illegal immigrants than there are Americans getting killed at the majority of military bases around the world. They are soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen and they know what it means to serve, so stop trying to express how they feel. They serve America proud and politicians need to recognize and expand on the fruits of their labor. How hard is it for Dems to see the fruits of our military labor and sacrifices, it is amazing and as for the Democrats, Hillary is much better than Obama and its time folks wake up and see through this man which is so obvious it makes me want to just say wake up. Not that she would get my vote but it would be her before him any day, he is just a bold face liar….. Hope of nothing…

Because they will stop at absolutely nothing to gain power. The Dems up on the hill right now desperately want control of both branches, and as soon as possible, they want SCOTUS as well.

The Supreme Court is the key to all of it. If the Dems can pack the court with liberals AGAIN, they will be able to do all the socialist nanny state garbage they want, in spite of what the voters want.

Think going out without a plan is risky. if no viable government in place that can offer security and a fair distribution of oil revunue. Military seems to be stretched to capacity. and money plays also a role in debate. To state that iraq is thee battleground for islamic extremists, its one of them. but not thee only one. It all depends also willingness of Iraqi Gov. (who are not used to democracy) to take things in their own hand. plus the viablity of reconstruction. emplyment etc. As long as country is in disarray of basic things. probably extremists have more change to thrive.
From historical references it doesnt look rosy. but I can be mistaken. Yugoslavia comes to mind different fractions. religions; for long time one country under dictator but fell apart when he died.
Furthermore think better to contain and solve problem rather than expand in some form.
All three have plans.but the how and when or what might happen under that scenario with Iraq is not worked out. or at least not presented.

———————————–

It depends on how you define bash.

Generally, the Republicans limit their attacks to policy matters, and root those attacks in fact.

Please keep in mind that they too are politicians, so their motives are rarely pure of heart.

The difference, in my opinion, lies in the lengths the Dems are willing to go. Again, the media plays major role.

When a Republican makes a false claim, or skips some facts, or twists things, the press are on him like flies on a turd. They beat it to death in the public forum.

On the other hand, when Dems do the same, their sins are swept under the rug by the media. This has been going on since long before 9/11.

I suppose you could put it this way. The Republicans have learned that if and when they go after the opposition, they must have all of their facts correct, in order and on the table. If they make a mistake, they get crucified in the press.

They may not WANT to be that honest, but circumstances force them into it. The Dems have no such restrictions because the media is their ally.

I cannot remember, I think Republicans just are more factual when they open up. I cannot remember Republicans pointing fingers; the world could see their own mistakes. During the Clinton years was the Internet boom so everyone was happy making money and believe me, it had nothing to do with Bill, we all know that, he was busy elsewhere and Republicans still didn’t bash him as much as they do the President now. I think they are pissed because each day they look in the mirror and realize that just as the President and others agreed as a nation to go to war, Democrats are the only ones wanting to retreat and say I did not want that. Please, I think the polls were around 85% to 90% of Americans wanted to handle this problem when we thought we were threaten. Its like getting into a fight, once the fist start flying you cannot change your mind and that is what the majority of Democrats are doing and trying to point their fingers when they should look at themselves because the majority felt the same way the President did that day.

To all concerned “Ever Proud American” democrats,

This is the most DANGEROUS TIMES in the history of our country! Knowing that the most charismatic candidate WHO MIGHT WIN this election has ties with the ENEMIES OF OUR COUNTRY.

-OUR COUNTRY HAVE WITNESSED HOW OBAMA SHOWED AMERICANS HOW HE WILL REACT AND MAKE JUDGEMENT TO PROVEN ACCUSATIONS TO HIS FRIENDS WHO IS CLOSE TO HIM…

-AND DOING THIS IN FRONT OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE THROUGH NATIONAL TELEVISION IS SO ALARMING AND SCARING TO ALL…
These are SOME NOTED SUPPORTERS OF BARRACK HUSSEIN OBAMA:

1. - RACIST PEOPLE - Blacks who harbor a disease of hate and racism who waits for the right

Holly, in answer to your question…yes and no.

The last two years of Clinton’s administration, the republican controlled congress did get out of hand with their investigations, which nearly backfired on them…but the rest of the time they were actually fairly respectful…if only grudgingly…that’s of course only in general…there were some senators and pundits with some very big mouths, which I think really is the case now…note that the biggest critics among the dems right now are all part of the far left wing of the party known to outsiders as the liberal wing though now they are trying to disguise their agendas with the term “progressives”. The current split in that party is not really about the candidates, it is an internal struggle for control between the “progressives” led by Kennedy, who convinced Obama to run when he had clearly stated that he wouldn’t be ready for another eight years, and the moderates, who have held the power with the voters since 92…and somehow voters think that a far left candidate will ‘reach across the aisle’…hah!

Holly, the answer to your question is YES…They have trashed the Clinton’s to embarrsment of this nation…over ML..even to this day…they continue to…Our News Media is no longer a place for the TRUTH.. they are political parties…you have to get a good remote control…and learn to check the facts for yourself….

I made this post earlier…I stand corrected….I heard on Fox News about the ML being brough up…and I thought it was a Repulican who had said it…I was wrong..it was Gordon Fisher…Iowa Co Chair…for the Obama Camp. Sorry…for mistatment…

John McCain should remain below the radar, rest and study his game plan for the general election because when the Democrat nominee (Hillary Rodham Clinton) comes a calling the debates will be interesting.

And you know Mr. McCain she will be ready, she will be prepared and she will be determined to end the war in Iraq as soon as possible.. It is time for the Iraqie people to defend and run their own country.

My first comment is Iraq is old news. But our Constitutional rights are not.I thought We had freedom of speech and all men and women to be treated equal I thought this a law, rules. Why then is there not a revote happening in Michigan and Florida they broke the rules so Mr.Dean so are you I think this is called a double standard don’t you????

Holly, I think that Mccain feels the same way that President Bush feels and most heartfelt Americans and that is they have the right to live a democratic peaceful existence in a region that does not want them there.

I do not have all the facts about Israel but I know that just like the U.S. they want to live in peace but will stand up for itself when threaten just like we Americans will. They have some long standing argument over land rights which I think Israel has been on more than several occasions willing to compromise but since the region does not stand up for itself and get rid of the terrorist in their country how could there ever be peace in that region. One way is to show the world that America and its friends are God fearing people who just want to live a peaceful life and they are learning that as a shinning example in Iraqi. They see Muslim and Americans fighting side by side not looking at religion but looking out for the innocent people of the world and many longtime friendships will be built and from there will grow and years down the road will provide the example of what America really stands for and that is freedom and respect for each other no matter what our background and not what is being taught in terrorist camps or in hate filled churches or masque.

Cindy, this is just proof of the Lack of Leadership in the Democratic Party…Who does Howard Dean think he is…? Seems to me makes them a bunch of Hypocrites…after what happened in Florida with Al Core…Go figure..
It sounds unconstitutional but I guess not…Sad , Sad, Sad…..I feel so sorry for the Florida and Michigan Voters…I can only imagine how they must feel…

I’m a FL voter and I say if they cannot respect your vote, vote with the party that does respect you as a citizen of America and let your vote be cased for John McCain and let your voice be heard since they do not want to hear you now. Come one; come all to the party who truly cares about everyone’s vote.

Cindy, if your vote is not counted in the General Election, I would entertain your comments about laws and constitutional rights. This, however, is a debate over RULES which the Democratic Party has imposed upon itself (just like having Super-delegates) and is being enforced by its party hierarchy. Florida and Michigan DID have votes. Because of their timing, the DNC has chosen to NOT SEAT the delegates from that vote. Please don’t intersperse rules, laws and the Constitution as being the same thing.

Mark, nicely written,I can see you are a very intelligent person ,not like most I see on these blogs (there are a few.)Keep your info coming.

Cindy, if I might add, I think Gov. Richardson’s call to stop the in-fighting and rally around a single candidate would in effect disenfranchise the voters in the 10 remaining primaries.

MY family or I, would never support a canidate for president, that did not support Israel.

Howard Dean is a very angry person,if he wasn’t a liberal he would be were he is. Thats why I ask the question about if republicans bashed democrates the way that democrates bash Bush. From what I have seen they have a huge double standard. The Info gathered here would lead me to beleive that the answer is no republicans have not treated democrates the same as bush has been treated.

I have been up todate on plitics since 9/11,but have little knowledge before, except the Clintons a little.

Holly, John McCain just as me and millions around the world share a true Christian faith along with respecting other faiths and could never see ourselves not support the Holy Land of Israel. I think if you have a strong belief in your faith, you also should have the judgment to make the right decisions in life.

John McCain – Great on Judgment
Obama – Terrible on Judgment
Hillary - Judgment tested and in many ways stood strong.

Comment by American Woman

Holly, I think the Dems have a deep resentment about Al Gore’s loss in Florida and the Supreme Court Ruling that stop the re-count in Florida…and I think it has clouded thier Judgement…I don’t think the Republicans have had that kind of resentment since Nixon was threateded with impeachment and eventually resigned over the Watergate Cover-up…At least that is how I remember it…

Although the Democrats will deny being in denial, they will not deny being misspoken.

Four years of a Democrat Presidential administration lead by and filled with “lying liars lying lies?”

Yeah, (W)right!!!

Comment by 100 years of wrong won't make a right

History will show who was in denial. That “MISSION ACCOMPLISHED ” sign won’t ever be put back up. Senator McCain says as much when he talks about staying in Iraq for 100 years. How can you claim to be succeeding at something when you say there is no end in sight, no plan for bringing an end, no idea what the end should look like, and no willingness to even discuss an end?
