Former Dem Rival Endorses Barack Obama

Bill Richardson became the second former ‘08 Democratic candidate for president to pick a pony for the Democratic nomination, when he endorsed Barack Obama today. The news hit on the AP wire a little at 3am, Eastern this morning, that Richardson, the former New Mexico governor, would join Senator Obama make his announcement on the campaign trail in Portland, Oregon. Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), endorsed Senator Obama last month in Ohio.

Obama explained the timing of the endorsement, which comes after a week’s worth of bad news for his campaign. He told reporters, “Last week, Governor Richardson agreed to endorse me, but we couldn’t get scheduled logistically because he had to go take a vacation with his wife, very wisely. So it took us till today to actually make the public announcement.”

Richardson, who served in President Bill Cinton’s administration, said that up until a week ago, he had been torn by two “very strong, good candidates.” Ultimately he made his decision  because he considers Obama to be “something special that the country needs right now,” citing Obama’s humanity, intellect, and judgment.

His decision was reinforced upon hearing Obama’s speech Tuesday, Richardson said. “He did not seek to evade tough issues or to soothe us with comforting half-truths. Rather, he inspired us by reminding us of the awesome potential residing in our own responsibility,” he said of Obama’s speech.

But with long-standing ties to the Clintons, he described his conversation with Senator Clinton last night to inform her of his decision as uncomfortable. “Let me say I’ve had better conversations,” Richardson said with a laugh. As he told the some 12,000 people in Portland, “The 1990s were a decade of peace and prosperity because of the competent and enlightened leadership of the Clinton administration, but it is now time for a new generation of leadership to lead America forward.”

While Hillary Clinton has remained mum in response to the endorsement, Mark Penn, a Clinton senior advisor told reporters on a conference call, “Perhaps the time he could have been most effective is long since past.”

“You know, that’s unfortunate. I want to get away from that,” Richardson said, standing next to Senator Obama at a media avail, saying this comment implied he could only help rally the Hispanic vote in states like Texas. “I want to go where Senator Obama has, where he’s calling on all of us to come together, not to be stereotyped,” he said.
In a lighter moment during his speech introducing Senator Obama at the Portland rally, Richardson strayed from his prepared remarks to recount a story to demonstrate that Obama is a “really good guy.”

Lamenting that he was never called upon during the numerous Democratic debates, he recalled being surprised when asked a question by the moderator of an undisclosed debate. “Needless to say, I wasn’t listening and I turned to Senator Obama in horror about to say, ‘Would you repeat the question,’ and Senator Obama whispered, he said, ‘Katrina. Katrina.’ And so I then gave my answer on Katrina,” Richardson said with a grin. “He could have thrown me under the bus, he but he stood behind me.”

“Don’t tell anyone about that incident,” he joked.

Didn’t the majority in NM end up going for Hillary? Isn’t Richardson a superdelegate? If so, won’t Obama have to denounce Richardson’s support as Obama’s campaign wants the superdelegates to go with the people they represent instead of using their own judgment. Hypocrisy again just like Kennedy and Kerry, both superdelegates, supporting Obama when Mass. went for Hillary? Obama may have to make a speech.
Does anyone think that all the free air time/exposure that was given to Obama by all the major news networks to give his race speech will be given to Hillary and McCain? I wonder if that exposure affected the polls? What is going on this year?

GO HILLARY !!!
Shame on you Richardson - you ditched your own people - New Mexico did Vote for HILLARY - that would be the Will of the People - Your people - So - What now?????? How can you or Obama ever get past that - you both have lied - again! Remember the superdelegates - must go to the will of the people of that state - endorse obama but - you must give your delegate to Hillary!

Obama + Wright = WRONG!

Comment by Maria Yoos

Gov. Richardson is a fool to throw his support for a candidate against the wishes of his own constituency. He also speaks out of both sides of his mouth, by saying he’s admires the Clintons, certainly spends time with them; was part of Pres. Clinton’s cabinet; yet throws his support against Hillary’s opponent! Some kind of friend! With friends like him, who needs enemies?… He certainly suffers from “foot in the mouth” syndrome and lacks character and loyalty for those that have supported him in the past and elected him as governor of NM.

Comment by Michael in Dallas

If there is to be a re-vote we would need to go back and re-vote all the states after MI & FL to be fair to all the Democratic candidates.

Who knows perhaps Richardson (and Edwards) would have won enough that they would still be in the race today!

Comment by ari

She only won NM by mere 1709 votes, so virtually tie in populair vote. Not actually sure meaning or influence but give some much meeded positive coverage for Obama this week. Probably he needs some extra inroads to Hispanic voters, and maybe Richardson likes to come in some caoacity in cabinet.

I applaud Bill Richardson! He knows who the next president of the United States is doing to be….OBAMA 08! I know most of you are terrified that we may have a Black President but DEAL WITH IT!!! You guys really need to get over yourselves and realize that we really need change in this country!! You have to admit that this country has been run by White men for generations!! Now look where we’re at!!We are in a war that we shouldn’t even be there in the first place! Look at the ecomomy!! Look at the condition that America is in!!! I know that OBAMA can make a difference!! You guys here in Fox need to stop the racism!! STOP IT NOW! Deal with out issues!!!

Comment by Governor of Penn. Edorsed Hillary - Bigger Deal

Richardson that is a shame…..she wins NM and you endorse Obama - Who cares, too little too late!!!!!!!! I’m glad we have a state like Pennsylvania where the governor is for HIlalry especially after this racist Rev. Wirght and his new radical approach to politics, it’s shameful and a disgrace. You stand by somebody that believes the same lies he says he is trying to change in Washington, his are no different. Go figure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually Senator Clinton won the popular vote in New Mexico, but Obama won the majority of the delegates. Bill Richardson is much admired and respected by many people. If you’ll watch his speach today, note that he stated, “Now it’s time for Democrats to come together, and concentrate on John McCain in the fall.” He’s rallying all Democrats to Obama, and rightly so. The old Gorilla Warfare Politics styles aren’t going to work any more. Hillary’s done. OBAMA ‘08

His state voted for Clinton. He was supposedly a friend. He did not vote the wil of his people. Let’s see what he was promised by Obama. Perhaps the VP or cabinet position. Do not run for office again traitor. We will not vote for you nor will we vote for Obama. If Clinton loses I will have to vote McCain even if it breaks my arem. I can never vote for a racist man, a racist preacher and unAmerican wife.
If they had been white then we would shame them. But Richardson embrases them. How un American of him !!!!

I guess we now know who will be running on the ticket with Obama as Vice President…Bill Richardson! Pretty smart (and scary) in my opinion — Obama just made up for losing all the Independents and Moderate Democrats by picking up all the Hispanic votes. Ok, Mr. Rove, how does one counter this strategic move by Obama?

BTW, I took Jeremiah Wright’s advice to read some of James Hal Cone’s work. Very scary stuff, if Obama is in a fact a loyal member of the Trinity Unity church (and a black liberation/socialist) it’s even scarier for the future of our country because in Cone’s own words “…black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy.” GEEZ!

Yep that pretty sad,We will see what happens down the road to Richardson. I dont think that his people are very happy with him. So now they are togather huh ? Richardson is just a slimmie, two faced, backstabber. Hillary ought too kick the pinto beans out of his ass !!!!

Comment by InspireThis

Richardson is a fool. Obama has said many times that the superdelegates need to support the person that won in their state. But I guess it really does not matter to Obama, just as long as he gets the endorsement.

Comment by Destiny in DC

Louise: The vote in NM was 50/50. Any way Gov. Richardson went he would still be representing the people. There are people on both sides of that 50/50.

Comment by Paul from Kissimmee

All he did was take the frontrunner. He didn’t exercise any loyalty. He’s only hurting the Democratic party. Being a McCain supporter, that doesn’t bother me. What does bother me is how we have Americans running for President that prove that they will burn down their own house to win the “prize”.

The timing of Richardson’s endorsement raises questions about what might be promised to Richardson in order to make it worthwhile for him to:

1. show his disloyal to the Clintons who have been his allies and supporters in his political career
2. show that he did not care about his state voters and his Latinos community
3. show his poor judgment by endorsing Obama who believes in anti-american and hate-filled Wright’s teachings.

In the long run, this endorsement does not have big impact since the Latinos have supported Clinton even when Richardson was a candidate.

Comment by obama/richardson 08

That’s WHY Richardson moved toward the Obama camp — to become VP. It is a sound tactical move from the DNC’s point of view. I’m sure Pelosi was a factor in this…

Just when Clinton gains momentum, a major political figure supports Obama and tries to stop the political “fallout” of the party’s delegate leader. More importantly, Richardson might bring over the Latino vote to his side — a core voting group that he will need in the GE.

I think Clinton has a slim chance now. Her campaign is already 9mill in debt, she is behind in delegates, and in popular vote, and she has lost the revotes. She can’t go full assault on Obama because of party alliance and she knows that if she does, then she will face major repercussions from the superdelegates (Hag Pelosi and Teddy K). But what she does have is a loyal following made up of the white middle class — and 25% of that group might go for McCain in the GE. Her victory will be saying, ‘I told you do so” when McCain trounces Obama in November.

Has anyone wondered since Wright was his mentor, his Minister, and spiritual advisor that while he wasn’t in attendence during the sermons/rantings maybe he had the DVD’s.

Governor Richardson,

Today I am ashamed to say that I held you in high esteem as a man, a politician and as a person.

However, your endorsement of the unpatriotic, race baiting, un-Christian and poor judgment led (Rezko, state appointments, suspect earmarks and REV. WRIGHT) Barack Obama makes me question your judgment.

The Obama campaign has race baited since Iowa and all of us in the African American community know it.

In addition, 20 years of attending and being under the mantle of the ministry of an American hater tells me that Obama lacks judgment for leading this country.

Were you threatened like the CBC members who were told they would lose their seats by Jesse Jackson, Jr. if you did not endorse him? Or were you paid off like other superdelegates with contributions to your upcoming campaigns?

Either way you have joined the list of non-thinking Americans and shown all Americans that you like Obama talk of a new political order; however, you do not live the new order you speak.

I am ashamed of you, but maybe this is why your candidacy did not take off to Americans, they saw through you like I see through you now.

God Bless America

It seems that Obama’s vision of one America doesn’t include Florida and Michigan…yea, he’s the candidate to bring us all together.

A real leader would fight to protect, rather than deny the rights of all Americans to participate in an election. Does he really think that we would support him in November afetr fighting so hard to silence us in the primary? I don’t think putting his own personal interests above the rights of the American people is a good path to the White House.

Go Hillary!

I never said you were uneducated. His message is the only thing he seems to have going for him. Unfortunately, his actions seem to be a bit different. We all know about the race thing already now. He admitted he lied about how much money Rezko raised for him (if he didn’t have so much heat on him for his pastor, he would have kept his mouth shut). His healthcare plan is a joke. He’s promising all of these programs to everybody. How does he plan to pay for it? Tax the hell out of us. This guy is not qualified and cannot be trusted.

The DNC would never fork over the money for re-votes. To do it right would probably cost 50 million for both states. They can’t afford to empty their war chest. It will be needed during the general election.

At this point. BO has zero incentive to cooperate with a re-do in either state. He knows he’ll lose Florida again, so why bother. Michigan might go his way, but that is a whole lot of work for just s few extra delegates.

As it stands now, he would be better served numerically to just let those states go with nothing.

Another thing to consider is that if BO picks up enough delegates in future contests, he can always take the high road and say “Go ahead, seat the MI delegates anyway”. Obviously, he would do this only if it allowed him to retain his delegate lead at the end.

Bill Clinton did not bring race into it in SC. That was the excuse that the African American obama supporters wants America to believe. Bill was trying to make the point that winning SC, like Jesse Jackson and John Edwards, does not mean you will win the Democratic nomination. On the issue of obama being the “black” president. 121 million people voted in 2004. Since African Americans made up about 10% of that vote, 12.1 million was African American (that number has increased this year with new registrations). According to the polls obama is getting 90% of the African American vote. By using the 12.1 million number in 2004 (which has increased), obama is getting 10.89 million African American votes out of his estimated 14.2 million votes. That is 77% of obama’s popular vote totals are from African Americans. Clearly obama is the president of the black majority!

Well, weeks would be more likely. You make a good point.

On the other hand, BO won TX caucuses by a long stretch. At the risk of being called a racist, that was a no brainer. The Hispanic turn out at the caucuses has always been extremely low, and the drooling youth contingent has always been pretty high.

He may have been planning to roll Richardson out at the convention or shortly before. He certainly wasn’t waiting to effect the primary in Guam. There may be other high end endorsements he is sitting on as well.
