Barack Obama Talks about Reverend Wright on the Campaign Trail
Yesterday Barack Obama published a statement on his former pastor’s incendiary sermons on the Huffington Post blog and conducted interviews on the three cable networks. Today, he brought it up the hot topic on the campaign trail at a high school in Plainfield, Indiana - an effort to take ownership of the problematic issue rather than let it fester on its own. At times like these when our divisions become the focus, it is important to remember that we can come together as a nation in spite of the things that divide us, Obama told the racially diverse crowd.
Senator Obama waited until the end of his Indiana town hall meeting to bring up the sore subject. He began by recalling Bobby Kennedy’s speech in Indianapolis after Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination. Read his remarks, in full, below.
“[RFK] said at that moment of anguish, he said we’ve got a choice in taking the rage and bitterness and disappointment and letting it fester and dividing us further, so that we no longer see each other as Americans, but we see each other as separate and apart and at odds with each other. Or we can take a different path that says we have stories, but we have common dreams and common hopes and we can decide to walk down this road together and remake America once again. You know, I think about those words often, especially in the last several weeks because this campaign started on the basis that we are one America. As I said in my speech in the convention in 2004, there’s no black America, white America, or Asian America or Latino America. There’s the United States of America.
“I noticed over the last several weeks, the forces of division have started to raise their ugly heads again. I’m not here to cast blame or point fingers because everybody senses that there’s been this shift. You’ve been seeing it in the reporting. You’ve been seeing it in some of the commentary of supporters on all sides. Most recently, you’ve heard some statements of my former pastor that were incendiary and that I completely reject although I knew him and know him as somebody in my church who talked to me about Jesus and family and friendships, but clearly if all I knew was those statements I saw on television, I’d be shocked. And it reminds me that we’ve got a tragic history when it comes to race in this country. We’ve got a lot of pent up anger and bitterness and misunderstanding. But what I continue to believe in is that this country wants to move beyond these kinds of divisions. This country wants something different,” he said. The crowd of some 3,000 began to cheer and chant, “Yes we can,” a mantra many Obama supporters have repeated since the candidate used it throughout his speech following his New Hampshire primary defeat.
“I just want to say to everybody here that as somebody who was born into a diverse family, as somebody who has little pieces of America all in me, I will not allow us to lose this moment where we can not forget about our past and not ignore the very real forces of racial inequality and gender inequality and the other things that divide us. I don’t want us to forget that we have to acknowledge them and lift them up. When people say things like what my former pastor said, you have to speak our forcefully against them, but what you have to also do is to remember what Bobby Kennedy said that it is within our power to join together to truly make a United States of America.
“And that we have to do not just so our children live in a more peaceful country and a more peaceful world, but that is also the only way that we’re going to deliver on the big issues that we’re facing in this country. We can’t solve health care – divided. We cannot create an economy that works when we’re divided. We can’t fight terrorism divided. We can’t care for our veterans divided. We have to come together. That’s what this campaign is about, that’s why you’re here, that’s why we’re going to win this election,” he concluded.

Thank you Fox for reporting on this like a true unbiased journalist should. I watched the CNN interview with Anderson Cooper and it was a joke. Cooper made so many comments as if he was apologizing for daring to question Obama’s credibility. It was a joke. Thanks for taking the high road and not placing spin on an important story. Look carefully at the man that comes into view as Wright talks about “riding dirty”…isn’t that Obama’s new spiritual advisor, Reverend Otis Moss III.
BTW…If it’s Moss, he’s trying to “high five” Wright after his “riding dirty remark.”
You might want to check that sermon closely. Wright is shown at the beginning of the clip saying “There is a man here that can take this country in a different direction…” and seems to point to him in the church. Then later when Wright talks about “riding dirty” Wright is wearing the same clothes.
From what I can tell, Obama was in the church while Obama denies ever being present while this type of sermon was given.
Was Obama at Trinity on December 25, 2007 for that sermon? Has Obama tried to lie to us again?

Obama and his pastor, Rev. Wright, who is chose to attend for service said God D**** America.
He has been at this church for 20 years and his wife who said “for the first time in my life I have been proud of my country” only when my husband and wife will be president and first lady after learning from Rev. Wright, the militant extremist.
McCain has been vetted. Obama has not.
Obama is not known, McCain is associated but he is considered a “Maverick.”

It’s amazing to me that it took this long for CNN to cover up all this and Fox purchases the tapes of the sermon that only backs all along the things that were being said about the church’s core beliefs, they are ruthless, crule to the white race and all races and Rev. Wright should be ashamed preaching “God D*** America” and Michelle for the first time in her life is proud to be an american, wow…then she states Americans are mean and blaacks are expecting us to believe that we don’t understand the black church (Is CNN CRAZY) if this is what they have to offer - I REJECT, DENOUNCE, OVERULE, REQUEST COUNSEL and totaly think this is an outright racism against not just whites, but blacks ought to be ashamed of those remarks. Had this been Hilalry’s Church and acted like this can you imagine what CNN would have done to her because she is a woman. It’s been about race and it’s also about gender.
It’s a sad day in AMerican history and I doubt that MLK would be proud of the Rev. Wright’s remarks and did not preach that leftist idealism that Obama took part in most of his life.

Robert…Have your ever read Barak’s book Dreams from My Father, maybe you should. His mother being white did not stop him from disliking whites. He even chose by the age of 12 not to tell people he was half white because he didn’t want to ingratiate himself t whites.

Oh, man! During an interview it was stated that “I don’t think the white media understands the black church” and, that the video “clips” have been taken out of context.
Reverse it, put a white preacher in a pulpit talking about blacks in the same way. Hmm, would never hear the end of that one.
And, as for the video clips, they weren’t short. How long would you have to sit thru it to get the gist of it? What—he didn’t say what he said?!?
It’d be more effective to hear a pastor encourage people to take care of their own home, their own family, their own neighborhood rather than use his pulpit for verbal attacks on the United States. What good is that doing? Stop putting the blame and start doing good-pull people together, don’t give them reason to separate!!!
Theology and politics shouldn’t mix. Church is for God, not for one person’s political opinion. Feel sorry for the lambs in that flock.

I believe the media has failed to do their job, vet Barrack H. Obama, (BHO) because he was considered “Black”. However, if his color and his pastors racist comments were reversed (BHO), as a White College Graduate with no national management experience (BHO) would have never made it to the first primary!
Hardball reported on Mar 14, 2008, Pastor Wright told (BHO) he may have to publicly distance himself if he gets past the primary and (BHO) agreed back in 2007! The pastor is a hate monger, his surmons are racist, and he was the BHO pastor for about 20 years with BHO donating over $22,000 dollars to his ministry. What happened to the people’s right to know from the media before the primary?
Mow the media is trying to justify 20 years of hate teaching, by saying BHO wasn’t there, didn’t know, and it doesn’t matter now because his pastor just retired. Why didn’t the media research and expose this racist pastor problem before real qualified democratic candidates were forced out of their campaign for President?

Look carefully at the man that comes into view as Wright talks about “riding dirty”…isn’t that Obama’s new spiritual advisor, Reverend Otis Moss III.
BTW…If it’s Moss, he’s trying to “high five” Wright after his “riding dirty remark.”
You might want to check that sermon a little closer. Wright is shown at the beginning of the clip saying “There is a man here that can take this country in a different direction…” and points into the crowd. Then later when Wright talks about “riding dirty” Wright is wearing the same clothes.
