Obama Distances Himself from Longtime Pastor

Senator Barack Obama often talks about his church, the Trinity Church of Christ in Chicago, on the campaign trail. Normally he refers to the church to assure voters that he is Christian, not Muslim, a notion that has plagued the candidate along the campaign trail. Typically Obama says he has attended the church for 20 years and if one were to go, they’d find a “very conventional African American church” where you would hear gospel music and “people preaching about Jesus.” In Ohio just a few days ago, Obama told voters, “You would feel at home if you were there.”

Reverend Dr. Jeremiah Wright, who until just a couple weeks ago presided over Trinity’s congregation, officiated Senator and Mrs. Obama’s wedding and baptized their two daughters. In his first book, Dreams from My Father, Obama wrote the pastor had great influence over him in the 1990s, and it was Wright who delivered a sermon entitled “The Audacity of Hope,” which had such an impact on Obama, that he chose to use the phrase as the title of his second book. And, of course, hope continues to be a main theme of the Obama campaign.

But Obama’s pastor has also been a lightning rod for controversy. For starters, Wright’s relationship with Louis Farrakhan, one described as “close” by Senator Obama, has been of concern to many in the Jewish community.

On February 24th, Obama spoke to the Cleveland Jewish Community Leaders group, where he was asked about Wright. Obama noted the pastor occasionally was known to “say controversial things,” adding most of those controversial statements were “directed at the African American community.” Barely a week later, he explained why Wright said things that are considered controversial. “Because he’s considered that part of his social gospel. He was one of the leaders in calling for divestment from South Africa and some other issues like that, and he thinks it’s important for us to focus on what’s happening in Africa, and I agree with him on that.”

Obama assured the Ohio Jewish leaders, “I have never heard an anti-Semitic [statement] made inside of our church. I have never heard anything that would suggest anti-Semitism on part of the Pastor. He is like an old uncle who sometimes will say things that I don’t agree with. And I suspect there are some of the people in this room who have heard relatives say some things that they don’t agree with.” He added, “My pastor is going to be retiring over the next month. So my general view, and the reason that I raise this, this is always a sensitive point, what you don’t want to do is distance yourself or kick somebody away, because you are now running for President and you are worried about perceptions, particularly when someone is basically winding down their life and their career.”

But the controversy hasn’t gone away - it’s now bigger and extends beyond the Jewish community. In some of his sermons, Wright has said some pretty shocking things, including inflammatory remarks about both rival Hillary Clinton and the United States, as revealed by FOX News and other networks.

A campaign spokesman issued a statement to reporters, reading, “Senator Obama has said before that he profoundly disagrees with some of the statements and positions of Reverend Wright, who has preached his last sermon as pastor at the church. Senator Obama deplores divisive statements whether they come from his supporters, the supporters of his opponent, talk radio, or anywhere else.”

The story only grew, and so Senator Obama responded with an Op-Ed on the Huffington Post blog site this afternoon, taking a harder stance against his longtime pastor, and clearly hoping this will be the end of the controversy.

Obama said he “vehemently disagreed” with the statements currently in the spotlight. Obama wrote Rev. Wright “has never been my political advisor; he’s been my pastor. And the sermons I heard him preach always related to our obligation to love God and one another, to work on behalf of the poor, and to seek justice at every turn. The statements that Rev. Wright made that are the cause of this controversy were not statements I personally heard him preach while I sat in the pews of Trinity or heard him utter in private conversation.”

The campaign can’t remember when Obama last attended Trinity, but said it had been “months.” Obama wrote that he would continue a relationship with his church under the care of its new pastor, Otis Moss, III, who took over just last weekend. “While Rev. Wright’s statements have pained and angered me, I believe that Americans will judge me not on the basis of what someone else said, but on the basis of who I am and what I believe in; on my values, judgment and experience to be President of the United States,” Obama concluded.

When you think about Michelle Obama’s comments about it being the first time she was proud to be an American and the Obama camp telling the people of Ohio one thing about NAFTA and the representatives of Canada anther there does seem to be a consistent pattern with the sermons from Rev. Wright. After all they have been listening to and supporting with their presence these diatribes for 20 years.

Comment by Scott919

You know…for me it’s not enough. It’s great that he condemned the statements but you don’t go to the same church every week for 20 years if you disagree with the message being preached and it’s pretty clear to me at least that Wright’s message does not represent the kind of mentality I want in a president of the United States.

Comment by maire thomson

Unfortunately for Obama, the statements in the press appear to be very typical of the fare that Barak Hussein Obama has been imbibing for 20 years or more at his “anti whitie” Christian (?–awfully chummy with Farrahkan of Nation of Islam) church. He was going to have this hate filled and bombastic man speak at the announcement of his candidacy but thought better of it. Michelle Obama’s snide comments about her lack of pride in her country (denoting the “everything is the fault of America” philosophy espoused by Wright– ;) until her husband was running for President are ample warrant that the words Mr. Wright have not only been listened to, but have been agreed upon and are part and parcel of the Obama household’s belief system.

This minister’s raw and vitriolic hatred of anything American, White or Jewish is pitiful! This is a racial election! Blacks vote for Obama! Whitie “ain’t it awful” sympathizers vote for Obama. Obama is African and White Kansan for crying out loud. His folks never underwent the horrors (and the were horrific) of slavery. Gerri Ferraro is right–he’s riding on his black skin to appeal to blacks and “guilt ridden for no good reason” whites.

Just as he is a black that hasn’t shared the “African slave” experience even in his lineage, I am a white woman who has no sense of guilt about slavery and no need for any such sense of guilt. My family, the Giddings (notably Joshua Reed Giddings was a US Congressman) were abolitionists who kept their homes open on the underground railroad. There were NO blacks in my small city growing up, but when a few came from Kenya to the local University my parents were the first to have them over weekly for Sunday Dinner and what interesting conversation we had. I have friends from Africa that live there now who are some of my most treasured loved ones. My kids are color blind but hurt when they are not accepted by black “friends” on their ball teams. Cuts both ways folks. Prejudice is prejudice is prejudice and that is what Mr. Wright and his

Black people don’t like (and rightfully so) to be painted universally with the broad brush of the large criminal part of their racial group in America. By the same token, I feel it unfair for blacks to hate all whites or paint me into the circle somehow of those who owned slaves–never did! Never would have!!! Neither did my ancestors. No guilt!!!

But Obama is guilty of supporting financially and by his word his Nasty, snarky and RACIST RACIST RACIST pastor.

Obama says he will unite folks. Well, he is dividing folks right now by the choice he made 20 years ago to make himself a disciple of this evil anti-American, anti-White, anti-Semitic “Christian” Muslim whatever preacher! Decisions have their price Senator!

Also Obama’s idea of bringing unity according to a recent speach I heard him give was “We’re going to unify America. We are going to bring them over to our side!” That isn’t consiliation, that is trying to force the rest of America to his way of thinking. This man is LEFT OF LENIN!

For the Barack supporters,

I know it’s hard to support someone for months on end and then have to consider changing candidates. Many of us have had to do it, but circumstances sometimes dictate. Considering the recent revalations with Baracks congregation (Rev Wright), his business associates (Rezko), and friends (Ayers), I think it is time. I truly hope you can at least look at the developing situations with these people and if after researching them for yourselves come to a clear conclusion.

I respect what you wrote Marie. Personally, two of my ancestors did own slaves and one of my ancestors was a slave. I feel no guilt either for the simple fact that I personally refuse to bear some red mark for something someone in my distant family tree did over 100 years before I was born. If someone has a problem with that I suppose they are free to get themselves riled up about it but it will be them that loses sleep over it and not me.

In his comments, Obama is trying to make us believe that he has not been sitting and listening for years while Rev Wright spewed out his venum. He wants us to think that Wright’s comments are something new. I don’t think so. I have watched the video. Wright clearly has long practice in what he preaches.

So, when did Obama finally decide to denounce Wright’s brand of race bating; after he decided to run for president? What was he doing before that, soaking it in?

And, what about Obama’s “old uncle”? I have to say, that was classic Obama. He dismissed the outrageous behavior of his old pastor with a charming comment and chuckle. Kind of like, “Aww isn’t the old reverend cute? A little eccentric, but a heart of gold.”

As other bloggers have noted, it is no mystery why Michelle Obama has never been proud of her country. If she was fed this guy’s bile for years what else can you expect?

Why hasn’t the press jumped on this? Has the mainstream press been told by their corporate masters to keep a lid on this until Obama is nominated, and then beat him to death with Rev. Wright?

Too little far too late.

BO has been exposing himself, his wife and his children to this poison for 20 years.

On the bizarre chance that BO was not in church EVERY SINGLE TIME IN 20 YEARS that Wright spewed this hatred, how could he have not heard about it from his fellow parishioners? How could he have been totally oblivious to this venom for 20 years?

Sorry folks, but I cannot accept BO’s statement as completely truthful. If BO had been in the church for a short time, okay, I could buy that. 20 years, without a clue?

No person would stay in such a church unless they agreed with the message.

How this entire issue has been “under the radar” for so long is a huge question. Obama knew very well the “pastor’s” views and feelings and yet he only now addresses these terrible views by this “religious person”. His views are no better than that of the KKK, and Obama was a member of this”church of hate”…shame on him!!! And he wants to be president?? NEVER!!!! How can anyone believe what he says having continued with this “church of hate”; hate to the white race and to the USA. Now I ask everyone who view Obama as their savior, what do you think would happen to McCain if he was a member of a church that pushed the KKK principles……he would be dumped by the republician party rapidly. But no….Obama is teflon…nothing sticks! …but this is too much…for being a member of such a group is by it’s nature not compatible with being president. He knew very well the potential fallout for this relationship for higher political office and should have dissociated himself from this “church of hate” but he never did…maybe it would interesting to see if he was there for any of these “hate sermons”. Remember, Obama decided to stay with this “church”, he could have left at any time he disagreed with what this “pastor” beliefs were or the political impact but he did not….amazing!

For a moment I thought you were being sarcastic. Seeing that you are not, can you please describe the lesson you feel BO has offered here?

If he has given up a long standing hatred, that means he has lied about his feelings towards whites throughout his entire public career and actually agreed with Wright for 20 years.

If his lukewarm renunciation limited to a few specific statements issued by his long time spiritual mentor, I’m not sure I want my kids to be getting that lesson. It sounds suspiciously like something Slick Willy would say.

So, what, exactly, do you mean?

I think the bigger story here is how the media has responded to it. There were 2000000 views of this on youtube before MSNBC addressed it. FOX reported it, then pulled its blog and the story over nights. And CNN can just ++++ off. The 3 interviews (especially with Hannity) dhould be fun tonight.

He gave the pastor $22,500 in 2006. Michelle Obama’s comments that for the first time in her life she is proud of her Country gives me reason to believe that the Obama Family strongly upholds the same views that the not so Reverend Wright is preaching to his pulpit! Barack Hussein Obama is not qualified to be a President for the USA. He does not have the qualifications and he is very inexperienced. I will never vote for Barack Hussein “Obomb-us!”

Dear me NO! Let him stay in. Let him run. Let the Dems fester in this wasteland they have created for themselves.

It blows my mind that the DNC itself didn’t reveal all this last year when they had a chance to squash BO early on. No. I take that back. They welcomed his run in the name of diversity. They just didn’t expect him to win.

The media may have missed this issue until now, but it really surprises me that the DNC and the Clinton camp didn’t have this stuff on file ready to release at any given moment. They are the masters of the filth files. How could they have missed this?

The media coverage of this issue with Senator Obama is disgusting. There is no doubt this is the biggest story of the Primaries and yet they hide from it. I don’t know if it’s because they are a liberal and don’t want to hook up their apparent democratic representative or if they fear the racist tag that the rest of us get. its a provocative statement, and yes definittely bit over the top; but guess the underlying message is not; it was about policy in south africa, mercatilism and stand for the oppressed.
Rationalism and lofty words might not have the same effect, and a sermon is also a form of theatre.Think the remarks has to been contextualized and then it forms a different picture.

Anyway not even a small trickle of damage, on the contrary even more momentum among super-delegates, his electibility is impressive especially in strong rep. states and that matters a lot.
Of course rep. love to have something that sticks, but doesn’t seem to work; in order to have their preferred opponent or that he comes out battered come fall. Both scenario’s are not realistic,
Hillary won’t pick this up and McCain is busy on tax dollars expense in foreign countries.
This in order to shore up his image as ‘leader’ . Out of sight. Whats left are some bloggers trying keep story alive. Good luck you might need it.

Mr. Obama,
America will judge you on the associations you keep. Denouncing TODAY the racist, anti-semitic, anti-American statements of your pastor can in NO WAY explain your TWENTY YEARS of devotion to him!!! You must also denounce the statements your wife has said, then??? Wright’s influence over HER has been utterly apparent. Your associations with characters like Wright, Farrakhan, Ayers, Rezko, and Auchi, bring your own character into question! And if you think “the man” is going to buy your denunciations, then you have a lot to learn about Americans in general! You can attempt to hide away all of your friends until the nomination, but you cannot hide from your past, and you cannot hide from the truth! How incredibly arrogant of you to believe that you can. But, then again, you HAVE been listening to the likes of Wright and Farrakhan for 20 years, and who knows who else before that!!!

I can’t believe that Senator Obama is getting a pass on his affiliation with this Chruch that he has attended for over 20 years. If the shoe were on the other foot, the Democratic party would be asking Hillary Clinton to resign if she attended such a chruch. The Senator is denouncing the Pastor but must also believe in the rhetoric that is being masked as a sermon because he refuses to stop attending this chruch. Where is the bias now?

Comment by DB

Call me a conspiracy theorist but I firmly believe the DNC and the old school liberals decided the Clintons were vulnerable and supported Senator Obama to rid the Democrats of the Clintin influence.

I mean he’s perect for it actually. He’s a minority, meaning he could cut into the Clintons minority vote; he’s new, meaning his votes were few and the baggage carried from them not a worry; and lastly he was anti-war, making him popular with the anti-war movement. Oh, I forgot to mention he’s comparably young, meaning the youth vote was his too.

He seemed perfect for them, but like everyone else, they didn’t look at his past other then his popularity vote amongst the IL constituents and saw a chance. Unfortunately, his past is far more complicated and unacceptable than they new and now the Dems have a problem.

The Clintons will retain their power, regardless of the outcome of this primary, and the old guard and Dean will suffer the consequences.

I have seen some of the clips by Senator Obama’s pastor and his mockery of our National Anthem in his sermon. It’s hard to believe that you could attend a church for twenty years and not take on some of the beliefs, even if by osmosis. Many people forget that there was quite a bit of controversy in 2007 that Senator Obama won’t cross his heart with his hand as every other American does during the National Anthem. Perhaps it is because he doesn’t feel the same way as other Americans. I feel that almost at that point he is saying his belief in the song and words are different than what the rest of the country and other Americans believe. With this new insight into his pastor and his beliefs, it is beginning to be a wake up call and scare me as to what kind of person we would be electing. Of course, it is coincidental that his pastor is on a sabbatical until after the primaries.

Black people are offered many advantages such as affirmative action. Pull yourselves up brothers and sisters and make a future for yourselves. You are empowered only by yourself. I recently heard the comments and mockery of Senator Obama’s pastor with our National Anthem as well as his racial comments in his sermons. It is hard to believe that someone can attend a church for twenty years like Senator Obama did and not take on some of those beliefs , even by osmosis. Do people forget about the controversy in 2007 when Senator Obama refused to hold his hand over his heart as every other American does throughout the National Anthem. After seeing the pastor and his sermons, I am inclined to believe that Senator Obama holds some of the same beliefs that his pastor has voiced in those sermons. Things are also becoming much clearer as I am getting scared as to what kind of individual we would be electing in this case. Conveniently of course, the pastor cannot make any comments on the issue since he is on sabbatical until after the primaries.

Ignoring or only cheap attacks without addressing the facts, or convince me otherwise
is probably too hard or maybe impossible.
by the way Albania is a western country,(cold war is over if you haven’t noticed already) with a multi-party system for over 10 years already.
know its hard to keep track of things whats going on; maybe you focus too much on phantom ideas and scenario’s and maybe better to focus on what really going on in the world

This form of christianity no christan needs. 20 years relationship is just not right by any standards. His wife and children I am sure have been exposed to this church and that is also troublesome. He may have choose this church 20 years ago but did not leave it even after learning of its creed, really sad. Of all the good christan churches in the Chicago area he stays with this one, HORRIBLE, plan and simple.

Sorry, He may be a good Senator for Illinois but not a good president with this history.
