Another conservative headache for McCain

Another day, another inflammatory anti-Obama remark for Camp McCain to condemn.

The latest comes from Iowa Rep. Steve King who told a Spencer, IA paper that terrorists would be “dancing in the streets” if Obama is elected president, adding that Islamic extremists will be energized by the Democrat’s Iraq policy as well his middle name, Hussein. While King has no affiliation with the McCain campaign, Obama officials still called on the presumptive GOP nominee to condemn the remark yesterday.

McCain spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan told Fox Saturday:

“The Senator has been clear that he intends to keep this campaign about the issues. He has condemned similar comments by (radio talk show host) Bill Cunningham. He doesn’t agree with King’s comments,” Buchanan said. “He intends to run a respectful race and keep it about the issues.”

In recent weeks, McCain also condemned Cunningham, who had delivered an anti-Obama rant at a campaign event, and the Tennessee Republican Party for an anti-Obama press release that also used his middle name.

One has a feeling that these headaches won’t be going away any time soon if Obama becomes the Democratic nominee…

I don’t agree with this article. I am not an Obama supporter, but he should not be ‘under attack’ due to his name. His parents gave him his middle name. Like Mr. McCain’s spokeswoman stated, he intends to run a respectful campaign and it should be about the issues.

Obama best candidate of three
younger, vision, energetic, charisma and superb ability to communicate policy
Hillary; evasive, dodgy friends (jail / indicted), shady deals, secretive (always hiding something)
sounds sometimes more republican than McCain
McCain angry, raging, old, old, old ; tired persona, not very good speaker, ultra-hawk orse war monger than bush, and old, old, old must be oldest presidents candidate alive in world

***real McCain:Rage seems to be at the core of his personality: describing his own childhood, McCain has written: “At the smallest provocation I would go off into a mad frenzy, and then suddenly crash to the floor unconscious. When I got angry I held my breath until I blacked out.”

McCain has distinguished himself most as an uber-hawk on foreign policy. a brief of his views: at a recent rally, he sang “Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran,” to the tune of the Beach Boys’ “Barbara Ann.” He says North Korea should be threatened with “extinction.”

IT”S MORE THAN HIS NAME
OBAMA AND HIS CHRISTAIN (SIC) CHRUCH
And it REV. WRITE
PLEASE REMEBER NOT ONLY HAS HE WENT HERE FOR 20 YEARS .BUT he has taken his kids to grow up in this …..

As for Israel, “The Israelis have illegally occupied Palestinian territories for over 40 years now,” Wright has said. “Divestment has now hit the table again as a strategy to wake the business community and wake up Americans concerning the injustice and the racism under which the Palestinians have lived because of Zionism.”

And we are to believe that O-BUM-A went to his church for 20 years. But he believe HE SUPPORTS ISREAL.??????

In sermons and interviews, Dr. Wright has equated Zionism with racism and Israel with South Africa under its previous policy of apartheid. On the Sunday after 9/11, Wright said the attacks were a consequence of violent American policies. Four years later, Wright suggested that the attacks were retribution for America’s racism.
“In the 21st century, white America got a wake-up call after 9/11/01,” Wright wrote in a church-affiliated magazine. “White America and the western world came to realize that people of color had not gone away, faded into the woodwork or just ‘disappeared’ as the Great White West kept on its merry way of ignoring black concerns.”
In one of his sermons, Wright said, “Racism is how this country was founded and how this country is still run!…We [in the U.S.] believe in white supremacy and black inferiority and believe it more than we believe in God.”

May be that you Rev. Write are full of hate and racism. But dont think all america is….

We are a congregation which is unashamedly black and unapologetically Christian,” says the Trinity United Church of Christ’s website in Chicago. “We are an African people and remain true to our native land, the mother continent, the cradle of civilization.”
That’s just the beginning. The church has a “non-negotiable commitment to Africa,” according to its website, and its pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. subscribes to what is called the Black Value System.

I HAVE A NON-NEGOTIABLE COMMITMENT TO AMERICA… How can Obama when he goes to a church like this for 20 years???

This guy is all word’s and NO substance.
And what substance that can be found on him. Makes things even more scary.
A wife that’s never till now been proud to be American???

I don’t know about you all BUT I have been proud many many times.
One of the times I want you all to think of is. THE plane that went down in PA.
Think about it.. IT was very very sad. BUT a group of AMERICAN’S said you may kill us. BUT WE WILL NOT HELP YOU KILL OTHER”S.
THE fire fighter’s that went in to save others?? the People from all over the country that WENT to New york to help.

A Rev. Write as his mentor And father like figure. That is a racist pig that even other black churches want nothing to do with… who said 9/11 was the white mans fault for not paying attention to the black mans needs???????

NO THIS O-BUM-A IS NOT WHAT AMERICA NEEDS…
They have cleaned their about site up some… Removed some wording..
This used to be included… Is not now.

“Trinity has a non-negotiable commitment to Africa, is committed to the historical education of African people in diaspora and committed to liberation, restoration, and economic parity.”

There is more they have cleaned up … Along with the Rev. Write retireing. I Believe This is all in a efford to CLEAN Obama UP….

But Many of us have the text saved. And it is posted around the net.

Go here and start reading at 1988. Included is the scrubed Video’s and a saved spot on YouTube of Rev. Write sermon’s..
http://www.freedomsenemies.com/_Obama/ObamaReligion.htm

THE 1ST JOB OF PREZ. IS TO PROTECT AMERICA. 2nd is to handle foreign policy 3rd He can not make Law’s But he can Influence them.
The thing that really scares me About Obama . Is the Racist anti Jew stand he is connected in. with his connection to Rev. Write and His church of 20 years….

THINK of His “I want to change the mindset that got us 9/11 and In Iraq…..
Think he wants to make peace with these people that hate us. He wants to meet with them for peace..????
THINK what is the one thing these wackos (Osama, PLO. Iran……) all have against us??????

The same as his Rev. Write….
“The Israelis have illegally occupied Palestinian territories for over 40 years now,” Wright has said. “Divestment has now hit the table again as a strategy to wake the business community and wake up Americans concerning the injustice and the racism under which the Palestinians have lived because of Zionism.”

That’s right The Illegal government of Israel. AS the call it….Our defence OF ISREAL….

THE ONLY THING HE CAN GIVE THESE WACKO’S FOR PEACE IS THAT WE WILL NO LONGER PROTECT ISREAL

You are wrong . It does matter that obama does have ties to the muslim world.Regardless of his faith he has relatives and a connection to the islamic world. He even changed his name to a muslim name. These are the facts like it or not. It is not a fairytale. And they would be dancing in the streets just like they did when over 4000 innocent americans were brutaly mudered on 911. John mccain may have to tread lightly to be respectful to the dignity of the political process and stay focused on the issues .But we as americans can express ourselves since we lose nothing for the sake of honesty. I will never support obama and this is a big part of my reasons. But not the only one for there are many.

King is totally correct, There are already stories that prove that Obam is working with terror gropus, when he opens the borders for them to attack us. Leaves Iraq so Terrorists and Iran can come in and take over the Oil , they will have more than enough ways to Make Nukes to aim at us.

Barack Obama is named literally after his Kenyan father; Barack did not “change” his name.

Barack was raised by his white mother, who moved to Indonesia with her second husband. If you want to blame anyone for Barack’s “muslim” anything –you have to point at his white mother, Ann. Barack’s muslim association began with his white mother from Kansas.

The “Muslim” comments are so old news….. just anti-freedom of religion pandering now. I suspect these comments are more offensive to Muslim Americans, than anyone else, which is a shame.

Obama is Christian, but fear-mongering about his Muslim sounding name is offensive to Muslim Americans.

Remember how Japanese Americans were treated during WWII; the US paid Japanese Americans reparations for abusive fear-mongering. Are we going to have to pay Muslim Americans reparations too, if something stupid happens during this election just because someone’s name sounds Muslim?

Poor Jose Jesus Miguel, he must know how Obama feels.

I’m glad I don’t associate Steve King with Martin Luther King, Jr.

You mean breakdancing in the street don’t you? Both the terrorists and the blacks will be dancing together in da streets if Obama wins, blacks because Obama is black and just because he is black, the issues don’t matter none, and the terrorists dancing because of his Muslim ties and he’s got that “black thing” “black muslim power” thing going on. Its gonna done be one scary time if dis negro brother gets elected.

Comment by Moe, Larry, the cheese!

Mahogony Shotgun, yeah, Obama has nothing to do with anyone associated to Islam, riiiiiiiight. Here are a few names you conveniently left out: Railla Dinga, Louis Farakkhan, Rev Wright, Nadhmi Auchi, why don’t you mention all his close associates? There are more. He may not be Muslim, but all the radical Muslim nutjobs sure do love Barack Hussein Obama. Why don’t you mention the wacked out names of his other relatives who were named after some of the most nefarious characters of the 20th century?

We have so much hate and anger in our country that it saddens me. How can people say such mean things about other people. Stating your opinion about some one is one thing but to make degrading comments is very unprofessional. This is one reason we have so much violence and hatred in our country, this is what we teaching are children.

What McCain needs to do is stop condeming people for what they say or say nothing. There are many, many American who agree with what is being said about Obama!

Comment by Jobaby

Salutations and Hurrah’s to DPG! At least SOMEONE gets it out there! The last week or so is a stunning example of why Senator McCain cannot garner the heart-felt support of the conservative base of the Republican Party. He condemns Bill Cunningham’s remarks, even though HIS campaign folks INVITED Mr Cunningham to speak … he disavows Rep King’s remarks, even though this congressman is SUPPORTING him. If Mr McCain wasn’t so busy proving how ‘ethical’ he is, he would KNOW that Bill Cunningham has been using Senator Obama’s middle name for MONTHS. And, as the ‘most qualified’ candidate to deal with Terrorism, he would ALSO know that Congressman’s King’s remarks were right on the money. Despite all the rhetoric from the Camelot Seekers and the Kum-Ba-Ya Singers … neither the Democrats nor the apparent Republican Candidate for the Presidency seem to want to speak of the reality that these radical Muslims want to KILL us. While WE in America can take pride in our ‘open-mindedness’ and ‘warm-fuzzies’, the Muslims WILL take a different perspective to a President with a Muslim name - ESPECIALLY one who is willing to sell out all the prior sacrifices of our precious military by surrendering in Iraq … ESPECIALLY one who wants to sit down with Mad-Man-In-A-Jihad, while his countrymen are chanting ‘Death to America’, ‘Death to Israel’. Steve King was NOT bashing Senator Obama for the sake of political expediency … he was simply stating a condition that would most likely come to pass if Senator Obama was elected to the Presidency. And that observation is every BIT as valid as Senator McCain’s claims that Sen Obama’s stand for withdrawal from Iraq is dangerous. Nothing personal against Senator Obama’s name … it’s just another consequence of his winning the election. It’s not HIS fault that ‘Husein’ is his middle name … I will grant him that. But, it’s not OUR fault that Radical Muslims will view his Presidency and his Iraq withdrawal as a victory for them.

I’m sick and tired of conservatives being thrown under the bus, even when their comments are relatively innocuous, or whether they are espousing opinions. Liberals can call our President a War Criminal … they can call our Soldiers Rapists and Murderers … they can even allow FORMER Presidents to bad-mouth America, its policies and its Presidents on foreign soil - all under the safe umbrella of ‘Free Speech’. How can we trust Senator McCain to protect us from Terrorists, when he can’t even stand up and defend his own supporters’ FREE SPEECH Rights????

Americans don’t get it. While we are trying to take God out of EVERYTHING in our nation, we are also trying to battle an enemy whose highest aspiration in life is to LOSE that life while taking out the ‘infidels’. Many in this country cannot even embrace our Judeo-Christian roots and principles, let alone LIVE by them … so there is no way they can BEGIN to understand the mindset and indefatigueable danger of an enemy driven by an ideology of death and destruction.

Senator McCain is too busy trying to ‘reach across the aisle’ (it scares me to think that John Kerry may have considered him as a running mate!) … and while he is wallowing in Political Correctness and ‘Clean’ (yeah, right) Politics, he is destroying the core of the Republican Party.

Many Republicans may vote for Mr McCain out of desparation … simply as the lesser of the evils. But, he will not have their hearts. I am one of those. TODAY. But … if he cannot muster enough courage to start supporting those who are trying to reach out and support HIM, there will be many more Republicans who may vote Democratic, or a 3rd Party Candidate in November … simply to send a resounding message to the RNC that they WON’T settle for a Republi-crat. And I may be one of those. In NOVEMBER.

Rep King is telling the TRUTH. America is asleep at the wheel. Obama is and will be viewed by the Muslim world as VICTORY for them. How can a man want to lead this country sending out a message to our adversaries that we have failed in the Midlle East and need to get out right away. This is what they want to hear so they can plot their strategy to move in and control the entire region. Obama is a part of the conspiracy to destroy our missions in the MidEast. We have military base around the world to help foster stability. I can think of no more important plce to establish a mikitary presence right than in the MidEast. One would think that the Commander in Chief would makr that a priority. He (Obama) obvoiusly does not. This makes me very suspicious. He solicited the advise of a Syrian and probably funds aa well to buy his piece of the American dream. He has very suspicious ties to Muslim ideology and support. Rep King has a right as an American to speak out for America just as others (Obama and his wife included) have the right to speak out against America. I wonder every minute of the day as to what happened to the Americans who weren’t afraid to stand up and say/sing, This is my country”. I am a black American, retired military and I support keeping this country strong and safe. To do so we must be wise enough to spot the wolves in sheep clothing and be courageous enough to protect our selves from political flim-flamers. Otherwise we will have 911 Part II, III, and so on. We have the right to protect our freedom. Remember to the Muslims, if your father was a Muslim, then you are one. That’s a FACT.

We are 9 trillion dollars in debt and of course the liberal left will blame the republicans, never once accepting any responsibility for it. Now I freely admit that President Bush has failed fiscally but give me a break.

The President puts forth a budget which congress and the senate approve. So with few exceptions the democrats and republicans in office approved the Presidents spending and only after they laced it with pork barrel spending. He should accept blame for it too, because he approved the extra spending they tacked on and before we nknew it we were 9 trillion in the hole.

Now the war has cost us about 12 billion per month for the last 6 years and comes to about 864 billion. In fact it’s somewhere in the range of 1.5 trillion with the early years costing more. So given there is a 7.5 trillion dollar difference, I’d say the rethoric is just more smoke screen. Both sides have to be blamed and for all the B.S. we hear, neither side has given a sh__ what our debt looked like. Well up until election time that is. Now it’s his fault, her fault, their fault, etc and none of them are willing to take not even a little of the responsibility.

So I’m asking everyone, who has the majority been in the house and senate? How is it that we’ve gotten so far in debt? Does anyone know anyone who takes any responsibility for it? More importantly, how would the candidates fix the problem? Barack and Hillary have promised approximately 650 billion dollars of handouts and both readily admit that taxing the rich will only gain them about 50 - 150 billion so where’s the fix. By my count, that’s at least 500 billion in the red (best case) and means another 2 trillion in the hole by the end of their first term. Now McCain, the other liberal in the race, promises to keep the tax cuts and cut out the pork barrel spending. That should help keep the debt down but I don’t see how it elimates the 9 trillion. So Barrack and Hillary get us to about 11 trillion and McCain keeps us at about 9 trillion. Yeppee!

Now, please spare me the argument that they will take the 12 billion from the war and use it, because we all know that’s borrowed money too. None of them have a clue how to pay for any of their promises, but rest assured they will try. They will raise all our taxes across the board saying it’s what’s best for our country. Maybe they’re right, but when you consider the fact that raising taxes generally means higher unemployment and interest rates, and a slow down of the economy, I just can’t see how we can avoid a recession.

In closing, we have three really bad options but hopefully we, the American people, can elect the right man or woman for president and more importantly make the Congressman and Senators that allowed this to happen account for it and elect news represntatives that will at least take responsibility for their actions. What we have now, is pitiful!!!!

Paul Revere once sent out an urgent call tha said, “the Btistish are coming, the British are coming”. In the same tone and wit the same urgency I am seding out the message that “the Terrorist are here, the Terrorist are here”. They are awaiting the outcome of our Democratic Presidential nomoination and moreover the winner of the Presidential election. The leader of Libya is weighing in our Presidential election campaign. What in the world is going on here? Can’t voters see that they are are being for a ride to the slaughter houses constructed our enemies. I feel sorry for what has happened in our country. We have let our guard down.

National Security and Barak Hussein Obama
After 9/11 and during all these difficult years at Middle East, While we are still fighting against the Islamic Extremists for peace, Prosperity and Nuclear warheads control,
Do you think that;
We are ready for a black lobbyist president with a short, dark political past, an Islamic background [an X Muslim,] and EMPTY promises?
When you deal with an X Muslim be twice as careful,
It’s easer a black person to become white, with the use of the soap and water, Than an X Muslim to become a Christian!
Obama declares that, he will negotiate, but officially as a Country, we don’t negotiate. We don’t negotiate with terrorists, extremists, fanatic religious groups and low level lives. Also all other Countries on the Planet have the same standards.
Our current economical state is not that great lately. We lost over 750,00 jobs due to NAFTA, 40 State governments are outsourcing jobs and contracts overseas, Auto industry is down by over 200,000 jobs while import of Chinese auto parts doubled up, About 75,000 0f high-tech jobs has been exported! [they are good on this kind of export lately], HMOs, Insurance companies, Microsoft Corp, Banks and Credit Card companies are processing American, Medical and Financial data in foreign countries. With a good tax system [fair Tax] we can reverse the loss of jobs and bring back to USA all the jobs
we lost to foreign countries We have the 2nd highest Corporate Tax system on the Planet!
Why we should oversee Huge problems we got with our
Planets’s Climate [global warming], forget the loss of Jobs, Foreclosures,
Poverty, inflation, Islamic conspiracy, Arabs, Iranians, Pakistani etc.
[they are fighting us with our own money! The one we pay to buy the oil]
And let them destroy our civilization, our promised technology and science,
Our way of life, through their agent Obama?
Obama’s negotiating will, is not a negotiation formula, it’s a LINE formula!
Obama has no ethical standards, as he stated during a recent Poor speech, his priorities consists of helping revive African countries, [he is from Kenya],[Nothing wrong with it, when you got the means and you don’t suffer yourself!] negotiate with Islamic extremists, terrorists and all the criminals you can think about. Also, he wants to withdraw our troops from Middle East, End the balance and security in the region and allow the Islamic extremists use their nuclear arsenal against non protected territories. That will be the beginning of the End for our planet.
Even Nostradamous mention his name and warn us about. [MABUSH]
They do, explain Nostradamous MABUSH as OSAMA+BUSH but they make a LITTLE mistake here. Nostradamous referred to our Country and he warned us about OBAMA+BUSH. Obama will succeed Bush as the next President if we don’t stop it.
Obama will destroy Italy, Israel, the Northern Coast and Islands of the Mediterranean sea allowing the Islamic extremists to use their nuclear Warheads after he withdraw our forces from the Middle East. [when McCain proved to him that withdrawing our forces from Iraq was not a smart move at all, he respondent saying that, he will go BACK in case something goes wrong!]His answer worth 24 Karats of stupidity. He tells the crowds that he does makes great speeches but we all know that, they write the speeches for him.
Also, the same time we will get involve in a civil war here at USA and we will be unable to help Europe. Obama’s mistakes, because of his inexperience and his love for Muslims will characterize him as the ANTICHRIST. He will be responsible for the 3rd [nuclear] World war and for the civil war at USA. What takes place here is an Islamic conspiracy against the best interest of the United States. They want to eliminate us and they are trying to do it officially, through the WHITE HOUSE!
Obama has no money! Although he spends billions during the Primary. Major part of the founds source is the Radical Islam. When Louis Farrakhan announced his support about Barak Hussein Obama he got Denounced and rejected by Obama. Louis Farrakhan should be mad and Angry as a pit bull but, nothing happened. Mr. Farrakhan’s silence indicates conspiracy and troubles.
This election is the most crucial in our History. Our National Security is Threatened by the Radical Islam and their allies. I’m not sure how many billions they have spend to buy the support of Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, Claire McCaskill, Janet Napolitano, C Dodd, Jack Cafferty, Danna Bash, William Schneider, Candy Crowley, Gloria Borger and others. One thing I’m sure about is that, we are in grave danger. I’m not a racist, I’m an American Conservative and I know like everybody else that, none of our founding Fathers were a black. In the name of our founding Fathers we have to unveil Barak Hussein Obama’s ties with the Radical Islam and nasty business with Tony Roscoe,
Stop and eliminate their conspiracy against our Country.

God Bless America

Matter of choice and consequences
Nobody obligated Barak Hussein Obama to take his name off the ballot on the primary of Florida and Michigan.
Hillary Clinton had the good judgment and went on with the primary on both States. So, She won!
Both States has to be taken under consideration like all other States, because both States are part
of the United States of America. Everything else will be unfair for the Clinton.
This particular case [and many others too] shows Obama’s bad Judgment, luck of proper
determination, inexperience and a [flip-flop mind]. A similar case is the Iraq witdraw.
When MCCAIN proved to Obama that, withdrawing our forces from the Iraq was not the proper thing to do, Obama said [So what? if something happens I will go back!]
I hope he meant that, he will go back by himself.

Let us not forget his vote’s in the House.
One of these is..
THE VOTE TO
Chemically induce labor on a woman. In the 3rd trimester (6 to 9 month’s babies that could live outside the mothers womb)
Then when the babies head crowned to stab the baby in the head and suck it’s brains out. While the babies body was still in the birth canal. SO THIS COULD BE CALLED A PATUAL BRITH ABOURTION…
YES HE VOTED AGANST THIS BAN ON THIS..
THIS VERY UN-CHRISTAIN THING BY MANY STANDARDS

HE WANT’S TO DEFEND HIMSELF AS A CHRISTAIN….. FINE LETS CK HIS RECOURD

Is it possible for a conservative to debate issues?

They seem to only want attack a person’s character.

So here is something for you conservatives. I wonder what the 3000 families, who lost a loved one in Iraq, were thinking as they watched President Bush dancing in front of the White House as he waited for John McCain. George Bush is so far removed from the damage he has done to this country. A war time prsedent should never have behaved like this. It is no wonder the Republican base has turn against the conservatives. John McCain’s success is direct result of the failed presidency of George Bush.

So before you go attacking other people’s character, you conservatives need to look at your own character.

many candidates change their stand on issues come election be it repbulican or democratic,
a more centrist view to court the crucial independent voters.
The lack (detail)of policy proposals is another hallmark, vague notions about security, economy, education, health and energy. So you wind up with sideline-info.
Character becomes than important, who are your friends, where you get money, past stands,
communicative, personality and inspring other people.
as far till now Obama has come out positive, others especially money donaters, dodgy friends, indicted friends, past stands and lack of personality / charisma are on minus side.

McCain cannot address this through surrogates. He has to get up in front of the microphone and say clearly and in person that he rejects what King said, that he will not endorse King’s race for the House seat, that King will have no role in his campaign and, should he win his race, King will not be welcome in the White House. In addition, all King’s colleagues in the House should turn their backs on him when he enters the chamber in a show of disgust.

John 1:43-51

The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 46 Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 50 Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

Marking MLK and Roe V. Wade
For about ten years now, we have taken the Martin Luther King holiday weekend and the Sanctity of Life Weekend, which always come back to back in January because of King’s birthday on January 15 and the anniversary of Roe v. Wade on January 22—we have taken these two anniversaries as providential opportunities to bring God’s word and the gospel of Jesus Christ to bear on the sins and the hopes that these anniversaries signify.

The Martin Luther King anniversary calls attention to the sins of ethnic enmity—disfavor toward people rooted in ethnic differences; and the Roe v. Wade anniversary calls attention to the sins of sexual licentiousness and selfishness and homicidal indifference to the life of unborn children.

Not Only Sins, But Also Hopes
And these two anniversaries signify not only sins, but also hopes. The Roe v. Wade anniversary signifies the hope that men and women may increasingly see their sexuality as a sacred trust from God and for the glory of Christ; and the hope that more and more people may come to see unborn children as human beings created in the image of God with the precious potential of being redeemed to praise Jesus Christ forever; and the hope that whatever heartrending situation makes a pregnancy seem unbearable, God always, always, has a better way forward than killing the child—better for the child and better for the mother and the father and the grandparents.

And the Martin Luther King anniversary signifies the hope that some day people “will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character;” and the hope that ethnic ill-will and strife around the world will diminish as people see others mainly as humans created in God’s image, rather than representatives of dishonorable groups; and the hope that structures rooted in racism will collapse; and the hope, especially for us who follow Jesus, that the cross of Christ will be exalted as the only final means of reconciliation between God and sinful man, and between sinful man and sinful man.

Greater Than Black and White
The issues raised by the Martin Luther King anniversary are greater than the black-white issues of our own unhappy history in America. They touch on the Kikuyu and the Luo of Kenya, the Kurds of Northern Iraq, the Uighurs of China, the Sinhalese and Tamil of Sri Lanka, the Turkish workers in Germany, the Latino immigrants in the U.S., the Aborigines of Australia, and the Jewish people everywhere.

Even in our own country the issues of ethnic disrespect and strife have been much more widespread than the horrors of slavery and the Jim Crow era. Irish, Polish, Lithuanian, French, Italian, German, Hungarian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Scandinavian, Hispanic, and dozens more—in other words, all of us—have not always loved each other well here in the United States. The erosive power of time has worn away many alienating walls in America, but the history of our troubled tribal ill-will is not pretty and is not over.

Christ Came Across the Divide
My hope in this message is that thousands of us at Bethlehem would put to death the remaining corruption in our hearts that thinks or feels or acts with ill-will toward others because of their race or ethnicity. The Bible says, “Put to death what is earthly in you” (Colossians 3:5). And it mentions “evil desires” which would include the spontaneous desires to avoid others or belittle others or hurt others because of their ethnic difference from us.

The divide could not have been larger between sinful human beings and the infinitely holy Son of God. But Christ did not despise us. He came to us. He loved us. He died in our place to give us life. And he did all this when we were more alien to him than anyone has ever been alien to us. When we feel or think or act with disdain or disrespect or avoidance or exclusion or malice toward a person simply because he or she is of another race or another ethnic group, we are, in effect, saying that Jesus acted in a foolish way toward us. You don’t want to say that.

Removing a Subtle Self-Justification
So that’s my goal with this message: that thousands of us at Bethlehem would put to death the remaining corruption in our hearts that thinks or feels or acts with ill-will toward others because of their race or ethnicity. I focus on the heart issue because if we could mortify this sin, if we could root out this remaining corruption, we would be spared many sins and bear much more of the fruit of love.

So here is what I want to do. I want to try to remove one of the subtle self-justifications we use to protect the sinful prejudice in our hearts. Before I tell you what this subtle self-justification is (and it is in all of us, every ethnicity, not just some of us), I want us to focus on a particular part of the text that was read from John 1. It’s not the main point. It is an implication relevant for our situation.

“Can Anything Good Come Out of Nazareth?”
In verse 43, Jesus calls Philip to be his disciple. In verse 45, Philip finds Nathanael and says to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” In other words, Philip has believed on Jesus as the Messiah and is eager for Nathanael to know him too. He identifies this one written about by Moses and the prophets by calling him “Jesus of Nazareth.” He identifies Jesus with a town and a group of people who live in that town.

Nazareth was a small town, no larger than two thousand people.1 The Old Testament is clear that the Messiah would be from Bethlehem of Judea (Micah 5:2). For whatever reason, Nathanael responds to Philip’s announcement in verse 46: “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” The answer that Nathanael expects is no. His question amounts to a foregone conclusion: Nothing good can come out of Nazareth.

What Was Nathanael’s Mistake?
Nathanael is wrong. He has made a mistake. Jesus does come out of Nazareth, and he is good. Nathanael will have to eat his words very soon. But here’s question: What was the nature of Nathanael’s mistake?

Sinful Prejudice?

One way to describe it would be to say that it was sinful prejudice against the people of Nazareth. He had what we call a stereotype of people from Nazareth and he made his judgment about Jesus based on that negative stereotype, and he was wrong. We will come back in a moment and ask what is sinful about that.

Probability Judgment?

But there is another way to describe his mistake. One might say, Nathanael did what we all do every day: He made a generalization based on multiple experiences, and biblical evidences, and then formed a probability judgment based on that generalization. “My experience is that the folks of Nazareth are ordinary and even ornery, and I don’t see in the Old Testament that the Messiah can come from Nazareth. Therefore, from those general observations, I think it highly improbable, if not impossible, that this Jesus is the Messiah.”

Life Depends on Generalizing
Now this way of thinking—generalizing from the particulars of our experience and drawing probability judgments on that basis—is both inevitable and good. The human brain inevitably works this way. And in fact, our life depends on it working this way. You observe carefully that mushrooms with certain features are poisonous. So when someone offers you one like that, you turn it down. You have never tasted or tested that particular mushroom, but you see it as belonging to the general class that in the past has been poisonous, and so you form a probability judgment and refuse to eat it. Your life depends on not treating this individual mushroom in isolation from your experience of others like it.

But sometimes your judgment seems totally legitimate and proves to be dead wrong. You form a generalization that the I-35 bridge is safe. You have crossed it a thousand times. The state inspects it regularly. But on August 1, 2007, you make the judgment to cross in safety, and it collapses. Your probability judgment was wrong. But it was not a sinful judgment. It was well-warranted.

If I pass a man with certain features and dressed a certain way in this neighborhood, I form the probability judgment that he is Somali and Muslim. I could be wrong. But that is what my brain does with the information that I have.

Generalizing Can Be Horribly Mistaken
I see a white car with red lights flashing behind me on 11th Avenue. From all my experience, I form the probability judgment that this is the police and not a criminal faking the lights to trap me. I could be wrong. But I pull over.

O how horribly mistaken we can be. Years ago one of the doctors in our church working the emergency room at Hennepin County Medical Center told me of the most bizarre thing he had ever seen. A man was brought in from deer hunting with an arrow through his back straight through his heart and coming out his chest. One of his own hunting buddies had shot him by accident. How? He formed a probability judgment that something brown moving in the bushes must be a deer. And he was wrong. Dead wrong.

Jesus Doesn’t Condemn Generalizing
Nevertheless, we do and we must think this way. Jesus once commended this way of thinking in a kind of backhanded way. The Pharisees came to him to test him by asking for a sign from heaven. Jesus was not happy about this because he had given them enough evidence, and he knew their request was owing to their hardness of heart. So he said to them in Matthew 16:2-3, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.”

In other words, you are really good at generalizing about the natural world and forming probability judgments from the way a red morning sky precedes a storm and a red evening sky precedes fair weather. You have studied the world, and you are good at this way of thinking. It works. But when it comes to seeing spiritual reality, you are blind. Jesus doesn’t condemn this universal way that the human brain learns from experience and forms probability judgments.

When Probability Judgment Becomes Sinful Prejudice
So what about Nathanael? Philip says (John 1:45), “We have found . . . [the Messiah], Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” And Nathanael answers (v. 46), “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Is this a non-sinful, fully warranted probability judgment that proved to be wrong—like judging the I-35 bridge to be safe proved to be wrong; or is Nathanael guilty of sinful prejudice?

I think he is guilty because he doesn’t say, “Can the Messiah come from Nazareth?” He says, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” If his heart were right, gracious, loving, patient, hopeful toward the people of Nazareth, he might have been legitimately skeptical about whether the Messiah would come from Nazareth, but he would probably not have said, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Nathanael has moved from legitimate probability judgments to sinful prejudice. His view of these people is so negative that he sweeps all of them into the stereotype, including Jesus. His reaction is immediate. He does not consider the possibility that Philip might know what he is talking about. He is temporarily blinded by his prejudice.

Judge Him by His Glory, Not His Group
Philip doesn’t argue. He simply says in verse 46, “Come and see.” In other words, give this man a chance. Judge him by his glory, not his group. In verse 47, Jesus sees Nathanael coming and says, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” In other words, Jesus acknowledges that Nathanael is honest. He’s not deceitful. What you see is what you get. So he is teachable. Nathanael asks, “How do you know me?” And Jesus says, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” With that, the stereotype is shattered. Nathanael knows he was wrong. And he changes his mind. Verse 47: “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”

The Line Between Probability Judgments and Sinful Prejudice
Now here is the point I want to make: There is a fine line between legitimate probability judgments and sinful prejudice. It is a real line. God sees it even when we don’t. And my concern in this sermon is to plead with you not to let the legitimacy of probability judgments function in your heart as a subtle self-justification for sinful prejudice. That’s my concern.

This is very risky to say what I am saying. It’s risky because there will be some people who hear this, and in the hardness of their heart, they will take my words about generalizing and probability judgments and use them as a cloak for their own prejudices. I know that. But I take that risk because there is another group of people—most of us at Bethlehem, I think—who deep down know we already use this self-justification. We don’t have names for it. We don’t work at it. It just comes naturally, and it feels so legitimate. I am pleading with born-again saints—sinful saints with remaining corruption. I am pleading that you hear my plea and say, “Yes, thank you for helping me see the subtlety of my own sin. I must put this to death.”

Three Indications of a Good Heart
Let me close with three indications of a good heart as we struggle with the line between inevitable generalizations and sinful prejudice—the heart that has received Christ and knows forgiveness and is indwelt by the Holy Spirit.

This good heart desires to know people and treat people for who they really are as individuals, not simply as a representative of a class or a group. If this were not so, Jesus could never be recognized for who he really is. Do you desire—really desire—to know people and treat people as individuals not merely as samples of their group?
This good heart is willing to take risks to act against negative expectations and belittling stereotypes when dealing with a person. Paul said, “Love believes all things, hopes all things” (1 Corinthians 13:7). I think he meant that love strives to believe and hope for the best, not the worst.
This good heart is ready, like Nathanael, to repent quickly and fully, when we have made a mistake and judged someone wrongly.
God, Help Us
Our hearts are deceitful still. And corruption remains. We must put it to death. May the Lord give us absolute honesty with ourselves and him. May he expose every remnant of sinful prejudice. May we never use the legitimacy of generalizing to cloak the sin of prejudice. May the glory of Christ shine in our lives. God, help us.

Betrayal, deceit, corruption and John McCain

November 14, 2007

Last week, Sen. John McCain launched on fellow Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani criticizing the former New York City mayor because Bernie Kerik, police commissioner under Giuliani, was indicted and accused of fraudulent dealings.

“A president’s judgment matters and Rudy Giuliani has repeatedly placed personal loyalty over regard for the facts,” declared McCain, suggesting that Giuliani’s support of Kerik showed a serious lapse in judgment.

Kerik, 52, according to a 16-count federal indictment, received cash and gifts for lobbying regulators on behalf of a New Jersey construction and waste-management firm. Prosecutors allege that Kerik cheated on taxes and lied to investigators–including those recommending him for a cabinet-level post on behalf of President George W. Bush.

McCain has forgotten his own history of involvement with betrayal, deceit and corruption

When McCain returned to the United States in 1973 after more than five years as a prisoner of war, he found his wife was a different person. Carol McCain, once a model, had been badly injured in a car wreck in 1969. The accident “left her 4 inches shorter and on crutches, and she gained a good deal of weight.” Despite her injures, she had refused to allow her POW husband to be notified about her condition, fearing that such news would not be good for him while he was being held prisoner.

But, just a couple years later, McCain, while pondering a future in politics, met Cindy Hensley, an attractive 25-year-old woman from a very wealthy politically-connected Arizona family. While still married to Carol, McCain began an adulterous relationship with Cindy. He married Cindy in May 1980 — just a month after dumping his crippled wife and securing a divorce.

McCain followed his young, millionairess wife back to Arizona. Not long after settling in, the former POW newlywed was introduced to Darrow “Duke” Tully, publisher of the conservative and powerful Arizona Republic and the Phoenix Gazette.

Tully, who quickly became a close friend of McCain, wasted no time in using the power of his newspapers to jump start McCain’s political career. His newspapers endorsed McCain’s first run for Congress and touted him as successor for retiring Sen. Barry Goldwater.

Described as “equal parts cowboy, commando, swashbuckler and elegant tycoon” by the Chicago Tribune, Tully was “a George Patton who drove a Corvette, a Randolph Hearst who flew an F-16, a John Wayne in aviator glasses and Air Force dress blues.”

Tully appeared to have a lot in common with his close friend, former Navy combat pilot and war hero McCain. Tully boasted of his 100 missions over Vietnam, retiring from the Air Force as a lieutenant-colonel. Tully’s military service, according to Tully, included air combat in Korea, where he once was forced to crash land his P-51 Mustang fighter and spent time in a hospital as a result–so he said. His smashed front teeth were replaced with stainless steel, he also said.

Tully, just like his friend McCain, claimed he had received the Purple Heart, Distinguished Flying Cross and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.

Tully painstaking groomed McCain for public office. He introduced him to the influential and gave him guest column space in The Arizona Republic. He manipulated endless favorable references from the paper’s other columnists. McCain, in turn, honored Tully by asking him to be godfather of one of his children

However, the day after Christmas 1985, it was revealed in the Chicago Tribune, that McCain’s close friend Duke Tully had “an imagination as big as his ego.”

Tully had never even been the military.

At the same time McCain’s political ambitions were being assisted by Tully, he had cultivated political relationships with developer and future Arizona governor Fife Symington III and lawyer, politician and banker Charles Keating Jr.

When Goldwater did not to run for re-election to the Senate in 1986, McCain’s powerful new friends quickly catapulted him into Goldwater’s Arizona senate seat.

In the senate, McCain managed to stay low key until suddenly he found himself on television trying to explain himself as one of the “Keating 5,” five senators who became enmeshed in the scandal involving the collapsed Lincoln Savings and Loan and the financial machinations of Charles Keating.

Keating was convicted of federal fraud and racketeering charges and in 1997, McCain’s friend Symington was forced out of office after being convicted on seven counts of fraud.

For years McCain has successfully cultivated a false facade as the “straight-talking” politician unsullied by big-money influence of special-interest groups. He has shrewdly manipulated most of the national press corps into ignoring (or forgiving) facts that expose him as a disreputable character and enemy of the truth..

Reports from a variety of U.S. publications exposed McCain’s true scandalous character

The Arizona Republic - October 17, 1989″ . . . both in telephone conversations with reporters and on a live radio talk show, the Republican senator was far from calm. He was agitated. Angry. And the way he dealt with unpleasant questions was to bully the questioners . . . ‘You’re a liar,’ McCain snapped Sept. 29 when an Arizona Republic reporter asked him about business ties between his wife, Cindy McCain, and Keating . . . ‘That’s the spouse’s involvement, you idiot,’ McCain sneered later in the same conversation. ‘You do understand English, don’t you?’ “. . . Not content with just bullying reporters, McCain tried belittling them: ‘It’s up to you to find that out, kids.’ . . . McCain wasn’t talking to liars. He wasn’t talking to juveniles. The senator was talking to two reporters.”

The Arizona Republic - October 17, 1989 — “McCain, in a radio talk-show appearance last week condemned disclosures of his family’s ties to Keating as ‘irresponsible journalism.’”

The Phoenix Gazette, November 13, 1989 — “Reporters also ‘discovered’ that the senator’s wife and father-in-law invested $359,100.00 in one of Mr. Keating’s projects in 1986 . . .”

The Arizona Republic, April 29, 1990 — “McCain’s involvement with Keating . . . when reporters called him with questions last year about previously unknown ties to Keating, an investment by wife Cindy McCain in a Keating shopping center and trips to Keating’s Bahamas home, McCain went into a rage.”

New Republic, Dec. 31, 1990–”The only Republican of the bunch [the five Senators], John McCain of Arizona wins credit for finally drawing the line. After the second of the two April meetings [with Federal regulators] he told Mr. [Sen. Dennis] DeConcini [D-Ariz.] and Mr. Keating that he wouldn’t lean on the regulators any more. Mr. Keating called him a wimp. But before the rupture, Mr. McCain and his family were regular guests of Mr. Keating’s on trips to the Bahamas. Mr. McCain reimbursed the owner of Lincoln Savings and Loan for only a small fraction of the cost of these holidays. Yet, he never reported the vacations on Senate disclosure forms, or his income taxes. He said he thought his wife had paid Mr. Keating back. This is hard to believe.”

Economist, Mar. 9, 1991–”Mr. McCain, despite his claims of innocense, was the only one of the five who benefitted personally–family holidays in the Bahamas on Mr. Keating’s tab.”

New Republic, Sept. 9, 1991–Calling McCain part of the “Senatorial Lincoln Brigade,” the New Republic reported that Keating, while bankrupting his savings and loan, had channeled $1.4 million to the campaigns or causes of the five senators, who in turn pressured the savings and loan regulators to back off our friend.”

Regardie’s magazine, April-May 1992 issue. “Ultimately, the fall of Lincoln Savings and Loan will cost the U.S. taxpayers $2 billion. It lost $1 million dollars a day from the time Keating bought it in 1984 until its collapse in 1989, and yet he continued to pay off McCain as ‘one of his assets.’”

Cindy McCain escaped prosecution for stealing/using drugs

The Arizona Republic, August 24, 1994 — “Cindy McCain, the wife of U.S. Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona, admitted in a series of media interviews Monday that she became addicted to the painkillers Percocet and Vicodin. She said that she used the drugs from 1989 to 1992 and acknowledged that she had stolen some pills from the American Voluntary Medical Team, a charitable organization of which she is president . . . at one point, McCain, 40, was ingesting 15 to 20 pills a day . . . the normal dosage for seriously ill patients is 6 to 10 a day for a short period.”

The Phoenix Gazette, August 25, 1994 — “Cindy McCain was investigated recently by the Drug Enforcement Administration for stealing and using Percocet and Vicodin, both narcotic painkillers from her aid organization . . . the county attorney’s report provides a window to drug dealings within Cindy McCain’s nonprofit corporation . . . Gosinski also alleged that Cindy McCain abused her husband’s office and diplomatic privileges by transporting illegal substances overseas. He also claimed, according to her lawyers, that Cindy McCain tried to prevent him from providing accurate information to the DEA.”

Playboy, July 1999. — “Ms. McCain admitted stealing Percocet and Vicodin from the American Voluntary Medical Team, an organization that aids Third World countries. Percocet and Vicodin are schedule 2 drugs, in the same legal category as opium. Each pill theft carries a penalty of one year in prison and a monetary fine.” However, McCain did not face prosecution. She was allowed to enter a pretrial diversion program and escaped with no blemish to her record. Source: James Bovard, Prison Sentences of the Politically Connected.

McCain’s Crime family connection

The Arizona Republic Jan. 17, 1995 “About 300 guests turned out Saturday night to celebrate the 90th birthday of Joseph ‘Joe Bananas’ Bonanno, retired boss of New York’s Bonanno crime family. He retired to Tucson in 1968 . . . John McCain, R-Ariz., and Gov. Fife Symington sent their regards by telegram.”

Much has been made of allegations of possible youthful use of illegal drugs by Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush. Meanwhile, his chief GOP opponent, Arizona Sen. John McCain, has admitted that his wife not only illegally used drugs but walked away from criminal charges. The McCains have worked to make Cindy McCain’s addiction into a political asset—despite the fact that she stole the drugs from a charity she directed and used them while mothering four young children.

In 1994, Mrs. McCain admitted that she had solicited prescriptions for painkillers from physicians who worked for an international charity that she f
