McCain uncomfortable with TN GOP anti-Obama release

San Antonio, TX — For the second time in as many days, Sen. John McCain was forced to rebuke members of his own party for over-the-top attacks on Democratic rival, Sen. Barack Obama.

The presumptive GOP nominee said he disapproves of a Tennessee Republican Party press release that used an infamous photo of Obama in traditional Somali dress, called the Democrat “Barack Hussein Obama,” and alleged that he consulted with anti-Semitic advisers.

“All I can say is that I have made my position very clear and I have made it time after time and I made it yesterday,” McCain said at a San Antonio press conference, alluding to his condemnation Tuesday of a local radio talk show host who also referenced the Democrat’s middle name at an Ohio rally.

McCain noted that given that he is still not the official GOP nominee and has little control over the entire party, but added that, “if I am the nominee of the party, I will obviously assure that everyone within my party knows that this has got to be a respectful debate.”

The Arizona Senator also noted yesterday that he is worried that outside groups like 527s, which he has no control over, may put up ads or use rhetoric that he does not support during the general election.

The GOP is not alone in having to deal with the problem of potentially over-zealous allies. Liberal groups could also pose problems for the Democratic nominee this fall by running spots like the “General Betray-us” that September MoveOn.org ad.

While some Democratic leaders felt compelled to rebuke the group forthe ad, neither Obama or Clinton voted to condemn the Petraeus ad.

It’s good to see McCain continue to speak out against this stuff, but I’m troubled by how many hundreds of times he might have to repeat this or similar lines in a campaign against Obama.

Comment by Belle

I’m pretty sure Obama wouldn’t do the same for McCain.

You’re right David, it’ll happen again. I still haven’t heard if Obama will say anything to Dean. Something tells me he won’t. I hope I’m wrong. I’m a McCain supporter, but I want to see this election handled with class from both sides. I want Americans to vote on issues, not on the biggest slam. Hillary tried that tactic and it really backfired.

so he can’t control these media messages since he is not the official nominee but he can’t control it even if he is the official nominee (?) maybe he is sincere about condemnation but have my doubts about motivation behind it. He made himself already numerous mistakes what he said and had to retract. Of course he must have known what was going to happen in stump speech (Cunningham), if its your race/campaign don’t invite him. Further point is the media attention of McCain to these apologies, quite cleverly done since the negative news of your oponent (which you denounce) is getting repeated, even to people who never heard about cunningham or other obscure group. So if you cant control these groups leave them as it is, don’t apologise or hold a press conference denouncing it. Otherwise you are part of it and exploit the message in a so called clever turn around - look am agianst this shameful isn’t it, really…not.

This is exactly why the current public campaign financing limts don’t work.

And McCain wants Obama to tie one hand behind his back and limit his fund-raising so he can “fight fair” against this crap?

This isn’t about keeping your word, it’s about insanity. Who in their right mind would limit their ability to defend themselves under these circumstances?

Now all the John McCain supporters will see what it’s like to be an HRC supporter. Everytime something bad comes out they’ll say it came straight from the John McCain camp. Nothing sticks to Obama. You can’t question anything without the media making you look like a whiner or or a bigot. I’ll support John McCain but I’m afraid he’ll be mince meat by November.

Why don’t you people read about your precious Obama.

It is amazing that people are this stupid. Obama is a member of a black racist church who’s main purpose is Africa and black only promotion, led by a racist preacher who loves and praises Lewis Farrakhan, leader of Nation of Islam.

Look up Farrakhan ( Nation of Islam) and Reverend Wright on the web people………do some homework, read what Obama’s church stands for.

Listen to Reverend Wrights sermons on You Tube. You will not believe it.

Obama has been a member of this church for 20 years.

I will never vote for this man. I will stay home if he gets the nomination

The whole democratic primary is un-American (news coverage and voting). The whole process, is so anti-Hillary Clinton, that it isn’t funny anymore. The people are not voting for obama, but are voting heavily agaist Hillary and Bill. Every american should be enraged at this injustice. In america, we have a strong sense of justice and fair play. I really did not care which candidate won the democratic nomination, but now I really “hope” it is the media’s golden boy (obama). Then obama will be the third liberal democrat to loose in the last 28 years (Al gore, John Kerry). The democrats hasn’t figured out that in the past 28 years, America only elects “conservatives” or “moderates” as president! Obama will loose, and loose big! It will not be because he is black or muslim (obama is too liberal)!

I find it very ironic that Obama pledges to sit down with the enemies of the United States, to talk. Then gets outraged when McCain sits down with an enemy of Obama. Just a thought.

please stay home in Novemeber, as your research could not be any further from the truth. Where do white folk in America get the moral ground to attack any faith or church that has done nothing but help the African American community. It was only 35-40 years ago that we, African Americans, could not vote in this state without fearing for our lives. Not to mention the other atrocities that Black folk in this country have endured, it is a wonder that the majority of us are not Militant Muslims. Thank God the majority of us are forgiving Christians, who happen to be proud of our heritage and concerned for our communities…communities that white America turn their noses up to. So charly…please stay home in November, as ignorant voters are far more dangerous than voters who are informed of the ISSUES…idiot!

Hussein means “handsome one” and it was Obama’s fathers name given to him seven years before anyone even heard of Saddam Hussein. All the stupid propaganda about Obama being Muslim and signing in to the senate on the Koran was from the email that Clinton’s staff sent out. Yeah and you want her to be President! Of course she knew nothing. Obama is American, and has never been Muslim. Get the facts from more than the gutter of the internet people. Go to some real news sources and quit listening to the hate! Obama has proven himself to be a leader sponsoring over 820 bills in his eight years in public office - 233 for healthcare reform, 125 on poverty and public assistance, 112 crime fighting, 97 economic bill, 60 on human rights and anti-discrimination, 27 ethics, 16 gun control, 6 veteran affairs and more. All talk and no action? seems like he’s acted alot and all for the American people! certainly not for getting a million dollar earmark to build a museum to Woodstock such as Clinton did.

It is true that African Americans have been mistreated in America and still are in many instances. I have a problem with Obama not becasue of his name or religion but because he does not seem to be clear on his policies. He seems to be saying he will have all kinds of free give away programs but how do we pay for them. When did we become a nation of people who are looking for handouts. What makes the United States such a strong country is our individual freedoms, our strong work ethic, and the knowledge we all have a chance at success.

Comment by Neale P

Why do people who consider themselves respectable journalists keep refering to the attire in that picture as “traditional Somalian dress”? The picture was taken during a visit to Kenya, and is traditional Kenyan dress. I understand why the clintons are intentionally misspeaking and refering to Somalia, because of the majority muslim poplation and the terrorist undertones of the region. Why though are people like FOX also perpetuating this underhanded and misleading spin? Could it be that this group is losing track of it’s neutrality in support of a losing cause?

Wake up people, he’s going to be our next president. Stop with the smear jobs already, it’s just making America look bad. Let’s pull together and show the world what a united America can really do!

And not to miss the point, I have the utmost respect for Senator McCain and the strength of character he has displayed here. I don’t agree with his warlike ways, but he’s a good man.

Hey Ty from AL, being Black I understand the need and purpose of the black church in the African American community. But aren’t churches supposed to bring communities together? obama’s pastor speaks about black pride, black morals, and the black family (giving an award to Louis Farrakhan). Are they any different then white pride, white morals, and the white family? I understand that those words are the words of obama’s pastor, but let’s flip it for a second. Let me use George W. Bush. What if G. Bush was a member of the kkk and the head of the kkk gave a speech about white pride, the white morals, and the white family, could G. Bush then say those are not my words? Here is my problem. How can anyone be a member of a group or club without believing in that group or club’s ideologies? If obama doesn’t, then why is he there?

There is a big difference between McCain condemning messages he disagrees with and AN ACT OF CONGRESS condemning MoveOn. In fact Clinton and Obama both condemned move on– in a way similar to what McCain has done in recent days. This is adequate in each of the three Senators cases. But giving the misleading impression that Obama and Clinton just let MoveOn slide is the typical Fox spin that reduces its credibility. As soon as McCain introduces a resolution condeming the TN GOP, then he will be superior.

I was a HRC supporter. The media gave Obama a free ride and now he will win the nomination. Everytime someone questioned him or something about him the heat was on. There is no way you can get complete information from or about Obama. The very same thing is going to happen to McCain. Everytime a Republican attacks him or an issue with him-they will cry foul. The news media will give Obama a free ride all the way to the White House. I have never seen anything like this in my life. We are going to have a president that noone can question. Americans needs to wake up and force the media to dig dig dig to get all the information on this man out. He may be a great person, but provide us with all his background and let us make the decision ourselves. I don’t care if he is black, blue, white, brown, or purple. It makes me angry when someone voices an opinion and instantly they are called racist. Is this what an Obama White House would be like-everytime someone questions him or don’t agree with his administration-they will be called a racist?

This is so rediculous. I have no problem with someone asking Obama where he stands on radical islam because of his muslim heritage. I am a Mormon and do not mind when people ask me where I stand on Warren Jeffs who is in federal prison for rape charges. He wwas the leader of a Church who broke away from the Mormon faith so they could still practice poligamy and other practices that Mormons do not believe in. I would tell them in no way, does this man represent my faith and my beliefs.
Enough with the Barak “Husein” Obama. If you have a problem with his middle name, than say I have a problem with his middle name and have questions in regards to wear he stands on radical islam. Do not tip toe around the idea and insinuate that he is a Jihadist, but ask him where he stands. There is nothing un-American about that.

It begins.

The “same old, politics as usual, smoke & mirrors” nonsense, or as Senator Obama called it, “the silly season”.

In the last 7+ years, this type of commentary has been pivitol on having Americans take their eyes off the ball/objective and allowed the current administration to make chop suey of the Constitution and the economy of this great country.

There is another portion of this type of ’silliness’ that DOES merit complete attention, though.

That it is ”crazies” who commit ”hate crimes” and this continual assault from a part of the Republican base - the Tennesee GOP’s statement, as well as radio talk show host Cunningham AND this GOP commentator can be seen as stirring up that type of frenzy or hate in those who are already overflowing with anger and frustration and have no ‘TRUE’ place to vent it.

IT IS DANGEROUS and DOES NOTHING to address this nation’s daunting challenges.

If the GOP carries on that tact, I believe and pray that the backlash from ALL DECENT AMERICANS ~ REGARDLESS of any political party affiliation should and will be tremendous.

Stirring up ”hate”; all too often can lead to ”hate crimes”.

GOP, continue at your OWN & Senator Obama’’s peril!

I am a TN Rep since day one McCain supporter, However, Tennessee needs to set the EXAMPLE on how to conduct a non-racist campaign as an example of southern civility. TN needs to convince all Tennesseeans, county by county that B.H. Obama and his philosophy will kill the Tennessee economy in 8 large counties ALONE, immediately. Tens upon 10s of millions of dollars are paying for 1000’s of people engaged in and around the BRAC re-alighnment. rebuilding of Arnold Air Base and improvement in Oak Ridge, highways and the products they use. The Democrats now are holding up money past July. WAKE UP TENNESSEE. It has to be hammered day in and day out that thousands of high paid Tennesseans will be laid off, apartments rented to military personnel, road improvements etc will end. AND IT IS NOT ONLY TENNESSEE affected, Kentucky, Florida, Alabama. Kansas, NC, SC GA and this is fact people….So quit the name calling and lets spit out the facts over and over.

Dave asks…

Is this what an Obama White House would be like-everytime someone questions him or don’t agree with his administration-they will be called a racist?<<<<

Well that appears to be the angle a lot of people are taking. I have noticed the “if you don’t support Obama you are a racist pig” rhetoric has really heated up lately and I find it concerning. There are those of course using it as a ploy but there are those who probably believe that it is true as well. It’s disturbing, frankly. I don’t support Obama but I hold that opinion because while I do agree with some of his positions, I completely disagree with him on others (such as foreign policy where I tend to see him as completely off his rocker). I couldn’t care less about his skin color. I’d vote for the green chick on Star Trek if I thought she was the best person for the job. I simply don’t think Obama is and thosethat pound the race card are really doing more harm than good for race relations because they don’t give credit to those that do not support Obama on the issues and do indeed disregard his race.

Comment by Christopher

McCain went after the people using Obama’s middle name (primarily because McCain knows the mainstream media will distort things to make people look like racist bigots).

However McCain has gone after Obama for doing the same concerning Howard Dean, to strike a comparison that Obama is actually more of the same.

Comment by RobK

Good for John, however I think the Republicans needs to keep hammering home how racist they really are.

So I look forward to more Repugs emphasizing Barack’s middle name so that appears that they are appealing to white aryan racist idiots w/no education who vote merely by a name and not by issues.

Noone saw this coming and it was bound to happen that McCain’s enemys like Limbaugh and Cunniham ( the newly ordained enemy of McCain who mentioned it on his show yesterdayand caused it to be carried by all of the media) would happily run with it.

Comment by Comment by Obama Supporter

As an Obama supporter I commend McCain for his firm, principled response to these gutter tactics. I liked McCain before he embraced Bush and his war (perhaps as a quid pro quo for Bush’s support during this election cycle?), especially after Rove/Bush smeared him with illegitimate black baby ploy. It is hopeful that he has signaled that he will not stoop to these tactics, though, of course, as he recognizes, there are the 527s who will have no such decency.

As for those here who have suggested that Obama will not, based on his past behavior, not reciprocate, I’d like examples. Has Obama resurrected the illegitimate baby story? Do you think he will?

As for the HRC supporters who have come over here to commiserate with Republicans, I find your response…sad. You are explicitly implying that these tactics are legitimate and that McCain and the media are wrong for rejecting them. Like I said, sad.

Look, Obama and his supporters strive to establish that HRC’s intelligence, experience and intentions have not translated into good decisions on issues that really matter, and that HRC’s deeper ties to the DC power structure make her beholden to them and prevent her from pursuing real change. HRC and her supporters have made a ferocious effort to establish that Obama is a do-nothing, know-nothing flim-flam artist leading a cult of personality. The voters have been more inclined to agree with Obama. Voters have found Obama’s argument more compelling.

All of you brainwashed Obamalheads are going to wish you wouldn’t have voted for him in years to come. If he is elected President and tries passing bills favoring blacks they will be passed , because congress will be afraid of being labled as racists. With Obamas religous background and his current black only church(racist), how can you say that these will not influence his decision making process. He is taking you for a ride. His insurance proposal lowering insurance $2500 a year is not enough. If you know anyone with preexisting conditions , they pay thousands a year $2500 is’nt squat. None of these politicians are going to go after the insurance and pharmaceutical companies because they are the people who line their pockets. Costs and inflation aren’t the reasons for high costs of health care.It is greed. Insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies are , in my opinion criminal and inhumane.

Comment by Paul to KING RAT

Of course not!

I guess the question is would you or I do it?

I wouldn’t and we’ve seen that Senator McCain wouldn’t have anything to do with it. On the other hand, I’ve seen what Obama has stooped to against Hillary. That and McCain softening on his initial war comments is why I came over to McCain.

The difference really is while John McCain doesn’t condone it and says so, he has no control over it. With obama it’s ok if his wife does it. The obama camp is also different in that his supporters are almost cult-like zombies who can be contoled but that would be the last thing that Mr. Obama would want.

Where are all the Gomer fans today now that Huckleby has been exposed as the one that is attacking Senator McCain on his citizen. Next thing we know Gomer will be claiming john McCain is an illegal immigrant.

Comment by Texas Jimbo to Paul

I would hold my breath for Gomer’s people to answer up. That ain’t exactly the way they work.

Comment by HeatherNC

Question 1: Do McCain’s pledges mean anything? I wonder if anyone else notices this.

Question 2: He says he’s not the nominee and that he treats his opponents with respect, and yet so far he has refused to debate Mike Huckabee, saying he hasn’t the time. If he admits he isn’t the nominee and claims to be respectful, wouldn’t he feel obligated to participate in a debate out of respect for American voters and his opponents? There is a conflict between maintaining appearances and actual actions.

Question 3: Is he not an appeaser? Right now he’s trying to juggle 20 balls. That cannot last forever. How many will be dropped if he has the power of the presidency?

Just some thoughts. By the way, I’m not a democrat, if that matters.

Why are we all advised not to use Barack Obama’s middle name? Is it because he is ashamed of it? Is it because democrats are ashamed of it? Or is it because it reveals his background and beliefs?

Wake up America! Stop being afraid to offend someone and always worried about being politically correct. If you are that afraid to offend someone or stand up for traditional America, then go live somewhere else, like France.

As for John McCain, he may have the honor and reputation of a great American war hero, but he is about the worst Republican I have ever witnessed.

Republicans, please bring someone else to the table, either as an independent or just oust McCain and give the nomination to someone else.

Where is the real John McCain hiding? He used to make appearances on Letterman and Leno. Then, when he decided to run for POTUS, someone disguised as McCain has been making appearances. The real McCain has a great sense of humor and would be able to defuse Obama in a heart beat. This present McCain is so politically correct I am ill. When Obama was referred to as Barack Hussein Obama several times, McCain should have had himself introduced as John SIDNEY age 72 McCain. He should have said it several times. Then when finished with his speech, he should comment that obviously there is no room in HIS campaign for anti-Muslim innuendo as there should be no “ageism” or racism comments in other campaigns. Also, the real McCain would have pounced on the opportuntiy to tell Obama that yes, there are Al Qaeda in Iraq - would he rather they be HERE? Where is the real John McCain? If he doesn’t come back soon Obama will be elected purely because he has the smooth tongue and rhetoric that the media LOOOOOOVES to cover. McCain was not my original candidate, however, when confronted with the Dem’s that are being offered. I will take McCain.
